Sisters Of St Joseph’s 27th Annual Golf Outing

The Sisters of St. Joseph held their 27th Annual Golf Classic at The Village Club in Lake Success on September 18, 2023.

The heavy rains prohibited the golf portion of the program. However, that did not dampen the rest of the event. 300 attendees, who began arriving at 4PM, were personally welcomed by Sister Tesa Fitzgerald CSJ, President of the Sisters of St. Joseph. All enjoyed the evening, which began with a cocktail reception, dinner, and a special

awards ceremony.

This year’s honorees were CSJ’s own Sister Angela Gannon, Eleanor Napolitano Scalzitti (posthumously), and Joseph Sciame.

Honorees’ stories were presented through a short video detailing each of their lives. They were each presented with an engraved gift by a special person in their lives.

The evening concluded with a very spirited auction. Guests were elated to find out if they were winners of raffle baskets or cash. The

event raised over $100,000 for various congregational ministries.

The night was a wonderful example of the love and admiration felt for the honorees, and for the Sisters of St. Joseph.

The golf portion of the event has been rescheduled for Monday, October 23 at The Village Club in Lake Success at 8:00 a.m.

Islip, Babylon Towns Kick-Off Northwell’s Pink By The Bay Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Northwell Health’s annual Pink by the Bay kicked off at Babylon Town Hall with a health fair to promote Breast Cancer Awareness month. Pink by the Bay is a towns-wide partnership with Islip and Babylon Town, urging

friends and neighbors from the South Shore to shine a pink light as a visual reminder for women to get their mammograms.

The month-long effort from Pink by the Bay will encourage Suffolk County businesses on

Main Street from East Islip through Babylon to light and decorate their storefronts pink as well as offer customers educational literature about breast cancer prevention and detection.

About 297,790 new cases

of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed in women in 2023; of which, about 43,700 women will die from the disease, according to the American Cancer Society.

“Breast cancer awareness and regular screenings are the keys to early detection

and saving lives,” said Karen Kostroff, MD, chief of breast surgery, Northwell Health. “A mammogram can make all the difference in the fight against breast cancer. Let us empower ourselves with knowledge and action to ensure the earliest possible detection, potentially leading to the least amount of treatment.”

This month, more than 250 businesses and households within Islip and Babylon towns will participate in Pink by the Bay, and both Town Hall cupolas will be illuminated in pink throughout the month in commemoration of breast cancer awareness.

“What can we do? It starts with early detection which is the best prevention,” said Islip Supervisor Angie Carpenter. “It starts with spreading the word, providing education on all preventative measures and the signs and symptoms to

look for. That’s what we’re doing today.”

Currently, there are more than 4 million breast cancer survivors in the United States. This includes women still being treated and those who have completed treatment.

“The point of this whole campaign is to raise awareness of breast health in men and women during not just the month of October, but year-round,” said Babylon Town Clerk Gerry Compitello. “We hope to see that the color pink will serve as a reminder to each and every one of you just to get checked.”

For information on how to book a mammogram and other treatment options visit: www.northwell. edu/imaging/services/ mammogram and www. northwell.edu/cancerinstitute/cancer-care/ locations/imbert-cancercenter.

Your Autumn Family Getaway Awaits

As Brentwood Superintendent; Ortiz-Rivera Named To Interim Position

As of Sept. 30, 2023, the Brentwood Union Free School District will witness a change in leadership.

Superintendent Richard Loeschner has announced his intention to retire at the end of the month, with Assistant Superintendent of Secondary Education and Bilingual Education Wanda Ortiz-Rivera being named interim superintendent for the remainder of the 2023-24 school year.

Mr. Loeschner has led the Brentwood Union Free School District since 2017, overseeing significant changes in capital improvement funding and the district’s position within Long Island’s education sector. Prior to becoming superintendent, he served as the principal of South Middle School and Brentwood High School, earning the title of New York State’s Principal of the Year in 2016. His journey with the district began in 2000 when he led the math department at the high school. With over 38 years in education, including 24 dedicated to the Brentwood Union Free School District, he retires with a wealth of experience and accomplishments. Outgoing Superintendent Richard Loeschner stated, “It has been an honor to be part of this district and community for so long. I will miss our students!”

Mr. Loeschner’s retirement was accepted during the district’s July board meeting, and Ms. Ortiz-Rivera will officially assume her interim role as superintendent on September 30th.

A bilingual administrator who was born and raised in Puerto Rico, Ms. Ortiz-Rivera is

deeply passionate about providing access to education and supporting systems for all students to succeed. At the age of 16 and not initially speaking English, she travelled to New York State to enroll at Dowling College to pursue higher education. There, she obtained a Bachelor of Arts in natural science and math with a minor in Spanish Literature in 1991. After that, she also went on to earn a Master of Business Administration in 1992 and a Master of Education in Bilingual/Bicultural Education from Columbia University Teachers College in 2004.

Ms. Ortiz-Rivera has served the Brentwood Union Free School District for more than two decades, beginning as a dual-language teacher at Southwest Elementary School in 2001. She has served in several positions in the district along with working with the Office of Funded Programs in the development of competitive grants for the students of the district. Additionally, she has been responsible for the overall administration and evaluation of the Bilingual/ENL Education programs, which has

become a model program for the state.

Ms. Ortiz-Rivera is an active member of the NYSED ELL Leadership Council, NYSED World Language Council, ASCD, Curriculum Council, NYSABE and LILTA, among other organizations. She has been recognized for her advocacy and contributions to the field of education and community service. Some of the recognitions have been granted by Teachers College, the Fundacion Ortega and Gasset, NYSABE, the Town of Islip and the Brentwood Board of Education.

Ms. Ortiz-Rivera firmly believes that the diversity within the Brentwood School District is its strength, a unique “superpower” possessed by its students. Her vision is clear: to celebrate and nurture this uniqueness while continuing to provide the highest quality education to all students. “The Brentwood community is not just a place to work, it is my family,” Ms. Ortiz-Rivera said of her role. “My students are the medicine to my soul.”

Islip High School Girls Soccer Team Wins State Hall Of Fame Tournament

Islip High School’s girls varsity soccer team recently won the 2023

New York State High School Girls Soccer Hall of Fame tournament. Over

60 of the top teams in New York State from all six classifications were invited

for the two-day weekend event, one of the country’s largest high school soccer

tournaments. Games were played on Saturday Sept. 9, both morning and night, with a two-hour afternoon break during which a Hall of Fame induction ceremony took place, attended by hundreds of fans, family members and athletes. Each team also played a second game on Sunday Sept. 10.

Islip’s Lady Bucs defeated two of the top-ranked teams in their classification over the weekend, while triumphing over a few obstacles. Originally set to depart from Islip High School at 6 a.m. and play at noon, Islip’s team – sharing a bus with Harborfields High School – did not leave the grounds until 11:30 a.m., due to charter bus issues. After a three-hour drive to Niskayuna High School in Schenectady County, the Lady Bucs attended the Hall of Fame ceremony.

They wound up playing at 5:30 p.m., coming back from a 2-0 deficit to defeat Nichols School by a score of 4-3, with four different goal scorers: Emma Bowe, Gianna Capolongo, Imani Hood and Nicole Matute. The Lady Bucs then had a quick turnaround, playing their next game the following day at 9 a.m. against a top-ranked Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake team. Abby Dieumegard supplied Islip with the game’s only goal, resulting in a 1-0 win for Islip and the title of Hall of Fame tournament champs.

“Way to go, girls and coaches,” Athletic Director John Sparacio said.

“This was truly a great experience for all,” said Islip coach Mike Reilly, a former Hall of Fame inductee. “Our Lady Bucs are currently 4-02, and we look forward to another successful season together, both on and off the pitch.”

Legislator Steven Flotteron, Long Island Housing Partnership Announce Home-Buying Grant Program For Fire And

Ambulance Volunteers

Up To $50,000 Available For Members For Home Purchase And Property Rehabilitation Through Program

Suffolk County Legislator Steven J. Flotteron and James Britz from the Long Island Housing Partnership (LIHP) have announced that an existing program that provides grant money to employees of businesses is also available to volunteer members of Long Island’s Fire and Ambulance departments.

“This program can help our volunteer first responders from Malverne to Montauk purchase a home,” said Flotteron. “Until now due to the employer match funding constraints these unsalaried employees (volunteers) could not benefit from State and Federal grants that can provide the money needed to buy a home. Our volunteer first responders put their lives on the line every time they are called, and they are owed a debt of gratitude. We are proud to have worked together to make them all aware of this program.”

As the number of volunteer fire and ambulance personnel continues to plummet, departments have worked to find ways to attract and retain new members and

also keep them on Long Island. With real estate prices at record highs and inflation increasing, the dream of home ownership on Long Island is difficult to realize for most families, and many are leaving for other states.

“It is nearly impossible for existing and would-be volunteers to make ends meet and also have the time for the extensive training and work that it takes to protect our communities,” said Flotteron. “Our hope is this program will allow them to own their own home while keeping them on Long Island and allow them to become involved in their communities.”

With his 35 years of financial and insurance experience, Flotteron discovered the program’s ability to be extended to volunteer personnel. Fire and Ambulance departments would need to become affiliated with the program for their members to apply.

“Some of Long Island’s largest employers have been providing this opportunity to their employees, and now we take another step to help more Long Islanders stay right here and raise

their families,” said Britz. “The LIHP is eager to begin working with these departments.”

The Employer Assisted Housing Program grant can provide a maximum of up to $26,000 in down payment assistance for the purchase of a home plus $24,000 to improve the property after purchase. A $3,000 payment from the grant receiver, plus $3,000 company match

is required. To help the volunteer departments match funds for their members, a not-for-profit, Long Island Homes for Heroes, Corp., has been formed with the assistance of Brad Wilson, owner of Jones Hollow Realty, to assist the departments with the match.

“Our volunteer organizations are funded by tax dollars and government grants, so they

do not have the financial ability to match dollars for their members who want to take advantage of this program,” said Wilson. “We have already begun our fundraising efforts and we are thankful of the response we have received thus far. It is proof that Long Islanders recognize the efforts of our volunteer emergency responders and this is a perfect way to say thank you.”

Those interested in the program can visit LongIslandHomesfor Heroes.org

“This is such great news for so many who wish to remain where they were born, raised, work and play and the program is open for business,” said Flotteron. “I urge all departments to become involved and give their members a new advantage in their effort to remain Long Islanders.”

Become A Volunteer With The Adelphi Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program

Compassionate women and men—both breast cancer survivors and nonbreast cancer survivors— are being sought as volunteers. The Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program, is a non-profit that has been advocating and supporting the community for 43 years. The virtual training will take place on four consecutive Mondays: October 30, November 6, November 13 and November 20, from 10 am to 1 pm. Attendance at

all four sessions is essential. Volunteers will be trained in the following areas: community outreach, educational presentations, speaking engagements, publicity and fundraising. Those who have had breast cancer will also be trained to respond to calls to the Hotline.

Here’s what some of the program’s community of volunteers have to say about their experience: Jeannie, age 68, from West Babylon; diagnosed in

1986.

I wanted to give back to the community and let women know they’re not alone. It was life-altering when I started volunteering 31 years ago. I speak Spanish and do lots of outreach, especially to underserved communities.

Lori, age 66, from Greenlawn; diagnosed in 2012

I am recently retired and wanted to do something to help people coping with breast cancer. I wish when I

was diagnosed I had known about the hotline where there were others who had “been there.” Someone to tell me “take a breath, I’m here for you. I know what you are feeling.” I have done several library outreaches and am involved with our new book club.

Tanya, age 55, from Wyandanch; diagnosed in 2020

I received so much support when I called the hotline that I want to provide that kind of help to

others. I do peer support for two women—linking one woman recently diagnosed to resources and speaking with the mother of someone diagnosed with breast cancer who was having a hard time. I’ve also lobbied in Albany for more funds for the program.

Jeanne, age 51, from Elmont

Although I don’t have breast cancer, as a nurse, I know that many women do not know about breast health and are going

undiagnosed. I am originally from Haiti and so am able to speak with callers in French and Creole, as well as English.

The process of becoming a volunteer involves having an initial interview, followed by the four training sessions. After the final session, there is an exit interview.
