The West Islip Breast Cancer Coalition

For Long Island, Inc.

The West Islip Breast Cancer Coalition for Long Island, Inc. (WIBCC) is a non-profit grassroots organization that was founded in 1992.

They work to eradicate Breast Cancer and gynecological cancers. Their mission is to provide support services to women undergoing treatment and requiring postmastectomy care with their “Lead A Helping Hand” program, and to actively promote cancer and environmental awareness with education, advocacy and outreach throughout the community.

As like many other non-profit organizations, WIBCC holds various fundraising events throughout the year to gain awareness and collect funds in support of their mission. This September they are part of Stop & Shop’s Community Bag Program. WIBCC will receive a $1 donation every time a $2.50 reusable Community Bag is purchased at 400 Union Blvd in West Islip, unless otherwise directed by the customer through the Giving Tag attached to the bag.

Additionally, they are participating in John’s Crazy Socks Giving Back Program, which started September 1st and will run through October 31st. John’s Crazy Socks is a fatherson social enterprise that was inspired by John Lee Cronin, a young man with Down Syndrome and his love of colorful and fun socks, or what he calls his “crazy socks”.

John’s Crazy Socks has agreed to donate 10% of their net sales to WIBCC for every pair of socks purchased from their website, www. johnscrazysocks.com, when you enter the

Next month they will present Pink Flags of October, a month-long event to honor and remember those affected by Breast Cancer.

Hundreds of pink flags will be placed at the entrance of Good Samaritan Hospital. You have the opportunity to purchase a ribbon in honor of or in memory of someone whose life has been affected by Breast Cancer. These ribbons will be tied to the flags and together the flags and ribbons will fly for the entire month of October.

On Sunday, September 27 from 12-2PM at The Cancer Institute (111 Beach Drive in West Islip), there will be a ceremony to celebrate this month-long event, which will include health information, light refreshments and more. If you purchase a ribbon, you can attend the event and place the name of whom it is in honor of or in memory of right on the ribbon itself. If you cannot attend, it will be placed for you.

The American Heart Association’s Long Island Heart Walk a Digital Experience

With the recent coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic keeping more Americans at home, the American Heart Association (AHA), the leading voluntary health organization focused on heart and brain health for all, is embracing the new normal and moving it’s iconic Long Island Heart Walk into a week-long digital experience.

The Long Island Heart Walk is a fun and meaningful way to celebrate heart and stroke survivors, raise lifesaving funds and encourage physical activity. “Now, more than ever, we’re all looking for ways to connect with others, stay active and stay encouraged,” said Randy DeYulio, Managing Partner Deloitte & Touche LLP and Chair of the 2020 Long Island Heart Walk Digital Experience.

“Our week-long digital experience allows everyone to continue to have fun and support our lifesaving mission, while adapting to spending more time at home. We are grateful for the support from our community and can’t wait to see how everyone makes the Heart Walk their own.”

Even if there are no visible signs of damage, homeowners whose roofs have some years under their belt may want to consider replacing them. Asphalt shingle roofs typically have life expectancies of 20 to 25 years, while roofs installed over existing layers of shingles may need to be replaced after 20 years.

Recognizing minor roof damage before it escalates into a larger problem can save homeowners substantial amounts of money.

St. Jude Walk/Run On Long Island Transforms To Virtual Event In celebration of Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, supporters of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital® from across the country, including the Long Island community, will be participating in the virtual St. Jude Walk/Run September 26th.

ThyCa Long Island, a support group for thyroid cancer survivors will be holding a free virtual meeting on the Zoom platform on Sunday, October 11 from 1:00 pm 3:00 pm. Justin Yowzawitz,

Virtual Thyroid Cancer Support Group MD, a Northwell Health affiliated Endocrine surgeon will be the guest speaker. Dr. Yowzawitz will be discussing hyperparathyroidism.

The talk will review the nature and management of

parathyroid disorders.

For the first time, the north side of the Suffolk County Executive H. Lee Dennison Building in Hauppauge was illuminated in a blue glow in honor of the men and women lost on September 11th.

Legislator Steven J. Flotteron wanted this special recognition for the 178 lives lost in Suffolk County on that day. He was joined by other elected officials, firefighters from Smithtown and East Brentwood Fire Departments, members of the Police Benevolent Association and community members to pay tribute.
