In addition to his recent nomination, his military service awards have included: the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (two times), the Armed Forces Reserve Medals “M” - two devices (three times), Navy Battle “E” Ribbons (five times), Global War on Terrorism Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, and Navy and Marine Corps Overseas Service Ribbons (three times), among others.

When using fireplaces and other appliances, dampers need to be open to allow smoke to vent outside; otherwise, smoke will be trapped in the home and could lead to carbon monoxide buildup. Dampers need to be fixed or replaced if they are not operational.

Mock Trial Team Shines In Virtual Tourney

Over the summer, East Islip High School has joined the mock trial community in fully embracing the virtual environment, with rising senior Kaitlyn Rice invited to compete in the prestigious Gladiator National Tournament for the second year in a row.

Run by UCLA’s law program, the Gladiator event allows the top 40 high school mock trial

students to compete oneon-one in four rounds of competition. This year’s Gladiator was conducted fully online.

Rice performed spectacularly and was recognized with the Nobility Award, granted to the most ethical and team-spirited competitor as voted on by her peers.

East Islip’s mock trial team, coached by Patricia Lester, has also been

invited to participate in two other online tournaments, Empire Online and the Yale Bulldog Invitational.

Both occur at roughly the same time in October, so the school was only able to participate in one of the events, choosing Yale.

In addition, the New York State High School Mock Trial tournament is also exploring having an online tournament in the spring.

Winter is coming, and for millions of people who reside in areas of the country that see the mercury drop considerably between December and March, that means prioritizing staying warm.

Inefficient or aging housing materials may compromise your ability to do just that.

Drafts from doors, poorly protected attics and basements and aging windows may force heating systems to work extra hard to maintain interior temperatures.

Replacing old windows can make a home quieter by blocking out exterior noises.

Consumer Reports also notes that new windows are often easier to clean and maintain than older varieties.

Many homeowners are interested in replacing their windows, but may not know where to start.

These guidelines can help the process along.

1. Get several estimates.

Ask for recommendations from neighbors or other people in your area on which companies they used to install their replacement windows.

When you interview the prospects, ask several questions about how they go about installing the windows. Questions can include: • How long will the project take?

• Will I need to remain home during the process?

• Do you discard of old debris?

• What is the protocol for installation during inclement weather?

2. Research permits.

Most home renovation projects need to be approved by the local municipality. Go to the permit office and find out the requirements. Some window contractors will include securing permits in the cost of the project. After the project is completed, an inspector will come by and ensure the work was done according to code.

3. Change up the appearance. Look at the type of hardware you have around the home and other fixtures.

Choose windows that have locks or latches that can match those features for continuity of style.

Think about choosing a

different style or frame color of the window, or a different type of window to improve efficiency and function.

4. Research top window manufacturers.

It’s tempting to purchase windows based on price alone, but replacement windows are often a decision that only has to be made once or twice for the life of the home. Invest in durable windows that will have staying power. Consumer Reports offers unbiased reviews on various window brands and can help homeowners make sound decisions.

5. Prepare for installation.

Clear pathways, remove window treatments and disconnect window alarm systems. Plan for one to two days of installation, advises Andersen Windows and Doors. Keep pets and children away from work areas.

Replacement windows can be a smart investment.

New windows can improve the look of a home, reduce heating costs and can keep interior spaces comfortable.

The West Islip Breast Cancer Coalition for Long Island, Inc. (WIBCC) is a non-profit grassroots organization that was founded in 1992.

They work to eradicate Breast Cancer and gynecological cancers. Their mission is to provide support services to women undergoing treatment and requiring postmastectomy care with their “Lead A Helping Hand” program, and to actively promote cancer and environmental awareness with education, advocacy and outreach throughout the community.

To accomplish their mission, they focus on prevention, research, education, services, their Lend a Helping Hand program and awareness.

WIBCC has remained open throughout the pandemic and are truly here to serve our community. This coalition serves all of Long Island, not just West Islip.

As like many other non-profit organizations, WIBCC holds various fundraising events throughout the year to gain awareness and collect funds in support of their mission. This September they are part of Stop & Shop’s Community Bag Program. WIBCC will receive a $1 donation every time a $2.50 reusable Community Bag is purchased at 400 Union Blvd in West Islip, unless otherwise directed by the customer through the Giving Tag attached to the bag.

Additionally, they are participating in John’s Crazy Socks Giving Back Program, which started September 1st and will run through October 31st. John’s Crazy Socks is a fatherson social enterprise that was inspired by John Lee Cronin, a young man with Down Syndrome and his love of colorful and fun socks, or what he calls his “crazy socks”.

John’s Crazy Socks has agreed to donate 10% of their net sales to WIBCC for every pair of socks purchased from their website, www. johnscrazysocks.com, when you enter the

charity code FG-WIBCC20.

Next month they will present Pink Flags of October, a month-long event to honor and remember those affected by Breast Cancer.

Hundreds of pink flags will be placed at the entrance of Good Samaritan Hospital. You have the opportunity to purchase a ribbon in honor of or in memory of someone whose life has been affected by Breast Cancer. These ribbons will be tied to the flags and together the flags and ribbons will fly for the entire month of October.

On Sunday, September 27 from 12-2PM at The Cancer Institute (111 Beach Drive in West Islip), there will be a ceremony to celebrate this month-long event, which will include health information, light refreshments and more. If you purchase a ribbon, you can attend the event and place the name of whom it is in honor of or in memory of right on the ribbon itself. If you cannot attend, it will be placed for you.

Brian Kroll Named As New Director Of Fine And Performing Arts The Islip School District has named Brian Kroll as the new director of fine and performing arts. Kroll replaces the interim director, Dr. Jeff Dailey.

Kroll comes to Islip from the Babylon School District, where he had worked since 2000 as Babylon JuniorSenior High School’s director of the junior and senior choir, extracurricular women’s choir, vocal jazz ensemble and chorale, as well as musical director of the all-school musical production and coach of the varsity golf team. During his time in Babylon, he was named an ASSET Bright Light educator in 2010. He served as SCMEA Division III East chorus co-chairperson in 2004 and 2005 and as SCMEA Division II East assistant vice president in 2006, and was chosen to direct the SCMEA Division III East honor choir in 2007.

He previously worked from 1998 to 2000 at the West Islip School District’s Beach Street Middle School, serving as chorus director, general music teacher and Drama Club musical director; and in 1998 at the Comsewogue School District’s John F. Kennedy Middle School as a chorus director and general music teacher.

New York Blood Center Encourages Blood Donors To Schedule Appointments

New York Blood Center is calling on the community to make appointments to visit donor centers as COVID-19 has fundamentally changed the process of donating blood. Before COVID-19, mobile blood drives hosted by high schools, colleges, businesses and other organizations made up about 75% of the region’s incoming blood supply, but the number of blood drives has dropped by twothirds this year due to the pandemic.

The upcoming school year presents new and unprecedented challenges.

Blood donations are typically lower during the summer and the return to school usually helps make up the difference and stabilize the blood supply.

In the past, school and college drives have resulted in 75,000 blood donations during each school year.

“The pandemic is forcing us to rethink the entire landscape, which means encouraging donors to take the extra step of

making an appointment and traveling to a donor center. The loss of young donors is a particular challenge because our future blood supply is dependent on these firsttime donors becoming lifetime donors,” said Andrea H. Cefarelli, Senior Executive Director of Recruitment & Marketing for New York Blood Center.

“We’ve always relied on the fall to provide a boost in blood donations from high school and college students hosting drives and this year we know this relief will not be coming.”

NYBC began hosting a limited number of drives again this summer, however they are far from the number of drives per month needed to support area hospitals.

NYBC is encouraging eligible donors of all ages to adapt to this new normal by making appointments to visit a one of its 19 donors centers, which have expanded capacity and hours of operation in order safely accommodate more

donors.

Rosh Hashanah is an important holiday on the Jewish calendar. According to the Jewish National Fund, Rosh Hashanah marks the Jewish New Year and is a celebration of the anniversary of the creation of Adam and Eve. Adherents to the Jewish faith wish each other a good, sweet year ahead on Rosh Hashanah, a day

that is steeped in tradition.

One such tradition is the sounding of the shofar, which the JNF notes is representative of the trumpet blast that sounded the coronation of kings. The sounding of the shofar also symbolizes a call to repentance. The shofar itself is a ram’s horn that calls to mind the story of the Blinding

of Isaac, an event that occurred on Rosh Hashanah and involved a ram taking Isaac’s place as an offering to God. Of course, no celebration of Rosh Hashanah, which takes place over two days, is complete without a festive meal. Foods served during Rosh Hashanah celebrations tend to be sweet and are meant to

symbolize hopes for an enjoyable year ahead. In addition, the JNF says it is customary on Rosh Hashanah to eat foods with names that allude to blessing and prosperity.

In 2020, Rosh Hashanah begins on the evening of Friday, September 18 and ends on the evening of Sunday, September 20.

Weik Calls For More Day Care Help For LI Families

As schools and businesses reopen, State Senate candidate Alexis Weik says Long Island families need more help in finding quality, affordable child care, and she’s calling on the state to expand a key tax credit to make services more affordable and accessible.

“As a working mother, I know firsthand the challenges of finding quality child care that is both affordable and safe. Now, with schools reopening, including many using a ‘hybrid’ model, and more New Yorkers trying to get back to work, we need to

help families who need quality and affordable child care and ensure our children stay safe and healthy,” Weik said.

“The federal CARES Act already provided funds to states to help with child care, but these funds are sitting unused. We need to release these funds and make them available now to support families that need it most.”

Weik joined in supporting a measure proposed by Republican Senators to double the existing state tax credit to help families pay child care costs. In the Senate, Weik said she would

cosponsor the bill, and seek to extend it so that the credit is available to more middle class families.

The proposal would be funded through $70 million in federal assistance the state has already received for child care expenses. Only about $1 million of that funding has been spent so far.

Weik, currently the elected Receiver of Taxes for the Town of Islip is the Republican-Conservative candidate for the Senate’s 3rd District, comprising parts of the Towns of Brookhaven and Islip.

The Value Of Mulched Leaves

Homeowners who don’t look forward to dusting off their rakes each fall might be happy to learn that mulching fallen leaves with a mower may be a healthier and less labor intensive way to confront a yard covered in leaves. For 20 years, turfgrass specialists at Michigan State University studied how lawns reacted to having ground up leaves left on the lawn and the results were overwhelmingly

positive.

Researchers found that tiny pieces of mulched leaves eventually sifted down through the turf and provided the lawn with essential nutrients.

Mulched leaves also served to control future weed growth by covering up bare spots between turf plants. Such spots typically provided openings for weed seeds to germinate and ultimately infect lawns. In fact, researchers found that

mulching leaves for just three years could produce a nearly 100 percent decrease in dandelion and crabgrass growth. Homeowners with mulching mowers that also have bags can even help their gardens by alternating using the mower with and without the bag on once leaves begin to fall. When mowing with the bag on, mulched leaves can then be used as mulch in landscape beds and vegetable gardens.
