PEDIATRIC SPECIALTY CARE: NEUROLOGY

The Over 50 Fair, now in its sixth year, finds new ways to connect with Baby Boomers and Seniors each year. The annual event is the largest “over 50” expo on Long Island. This year’s event, on Sunday, September 27th, from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Melville Marriott, introduces its newest addition, a Singles Lounge.

“Every year, our single guests request a way to meet other singles. Seven in Heaven Singles Events will be facilitating this interaction in our new Singles Lounge, which will have music, a seating area, and icebreaker games several times during the day, such as Kings and Queens,” explained East Hills resident Barbara Kaplan, the Over 50 Fair director.

As in the past, the Over 50 Fair will also have 90 exhibitors and 30 speakers including local and national celebrities.

Chef Jonathan of Fox TV’s hit show MasterChef Season 6, its most recent season, will be preparing California Style Calamari Salad and doing a “meet and greet.”

Not to be outdone, Chef AJ of Fox TV’s MasterChef Junior Season 3, the most recent season, will be cooking Quesadillas for all to try. Chef AJ, age 11, was a huge hit at April’s All Kids Fair where she prepared waffles with fresh whipped cream and fruit.

The newly crowned Ms. New York Senior America 2015, CJ Marie, will be in attendance, along with her counterparts from 2013 and 2014.

Edith Jason, one of the oldest yoga teachers on Long Island, will be teaching a yoga class. Mrs. Jason, age 80, has been teaching yoga since 1986 and currently teaches several times a week at Winthrop Hospital.

Mark Brier of Laughs at

the Library and Howard Newman of Jokesercise, where one can get a little exercise along with enjoying a comedy show, will be on hand to entertain at separate performances.

In addition, there will be a group psychic reading, reiki class, iPad tips, saving for retirement, travel, and health topics such as sleep apnea, menopause, and podiatry.

This event has been building a loyal following among the Boomer Generation during the five years of its existence due to its consistent presentation of a variety of classes and products they find appealing.

The free opportunities this year include valet parking, waxing, and health screenings such as video otoscope and blood pressure screenings.

Alone in a Bowl: My Saga By: Jamie Lynn Ryan It’s been days, and still no sign of my human. No light on in the kitchen. No food pellet delivery at dinnertime.

No – dare I say it – bath time.

Nothing. Where did she go?

Alone in my bowl, I swim my solitary laps, counting down the hours, days, weeks… it must be weeks by now. Just me and my plant (which, by the way, is starting to look pretty tasty at this point). I should’ve known something was up when I found a few extra flakes in my bowl right after the last human sighting.

And the suitcase… what was that for?

Come to think of it, I heard something about “vacation,” whatever that

is, and then this giant bettashaped vitamin was placed in my bowl with promises of food coming shortly. When?

It’s already been at least a month. Time tends to fast forward when you live in a bowl.

But, wait… here it is – a flake. And another. Where did they come from? No human in sight, but this little vitamin seems to be melting into food! Oh thank goodness! She didn’t forget about me after all. I wonder if she’ll ever be back? {826 Days Later…} I hear a noise! The front door… the light… MY HUMAN HAS RETURNED! Oh boy, oh boy! If I had longer fins, I’d give her the biggest hug ever! Oh, and here comes the good food,

my gourmet pellets, with a few extra thrown in – how sweet. She didn’t abandon me after all.

But where did she go?

I see the suitcase… but no presents? No souvenirs for Buddy? And what’s this about “bath time” now? She’s been home five minutes and already this nonsense about cleaning out the remnants of the vitamin from my bowl. Good grief.

There had better be a good explanation for all this.

I expect a special trip to the pet store this weekend to pick out a new toy… and extra food… and at least a week’s notice the next time one of these “vacation” things takes place.

Better yet, I expect to be invited along.

Prior to his arrival at St. John’s, Mr. Artigas was appointed Chairperson of the Social Studies Department at Holy Cross High School in Flushing, NY. He also served as a coach and a Social Studies teacher. He is an alum of Holy Cross High School and Iona College, where he earned his Bachelor’s in Adolescent Education, and a Master’s in History.

St. John’s University awarded him an Advanced Certificate in School Building and School District Leadership and he is currently enrolled there for his Doctorate. He is looking forward to working with all of the students, families and faculty of St. John the Baptist DHS in his new role as Assistant Principal.

Excitement in the Air With the heat of summer still lingering in the air, students at the East Islip School District’s six schools – the high school, the middle school, and Connetquot, John F. Kennedy, Ruth C. Kinney and Timber Point elementary schools – streamed back to classes on September 3rd full of excitement at the prospect of a brand-new school year.

“What an amazing first day at Timber Point,” said the school’s new principal, Danielle Naccarato. “The excitement, anticipation and energy were felt in the air. Seeing all of the students’ smiles just made my day.”

“There is life again at

East Islip High School,” said Principal Bill Brennen, as his building filled with new freshmen and seniors nearing the end of their long educational journey at the district. “It’s great to have our students back, excited and ready to learn.”

It didn’t take long for the returning students to get back in the swing of things, academically.

“The first- and secondgrade children were eager to be back learning and fell quickly into a familiar routine, working on literacy and numeracy skills right from the start,” said Connetquot Principal Deborah Smith.

“Our new entrants and kindergartners were all

smiles as they made many new friends and were warmly welcomed into the Connetquot family.”

While the heat outside recalled the joys of summer, inside the buildings it was full steam ahead, adjusting to new schools and reconnecting with classmates. Donations Received The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD) received more than $2,000 in donations from friends and family members in memory of Nicolette, who passed away from an overdose at 20 years old.

With the heroin and opiate crisis raging, the demand for LICADD’s services has increased

exponentially. Significant price drops in the street price of heroin on Long Island, have increased the number of young people who are using the drug.

Calls to LICADD’s hotlines and requests for services mirror these increasing trends and beyond the sheer rise in numbers of young people and their families seeking

heroin addiction treatment services, the rapid progression from snorting to injecting the drug is startling and obviously increases the potential health consequences for users.

This significant donation assists the Long Island community by providing additional services for families in desperate need

of LICADD’s services. “Our friend Nikki died tragically at 20 years old – a funny, caring and beautiful soul.

This year, in honor of her birthday, we raised these funds in the hopes of helping save another soul from being lost.” says Ilana Esquenazi, Nikki’s best friend.

For over 59 years, LICADD has successfully

delivered evidence-based programs designed to prevent and treat substance abuse and addiction.

LICADD offers crisis intervention, screenings, brief interventions, referrals to treatment and several family and parent education workshops to help Long Islanders struggling with the effects of addiction. Through our
