Moriches Field Brewing Company received $18,750 to revitalize an empty downtown space.

(Cheers to that.)

Revitalization grants are just one of the ways we help businesses on Long Island and in the Rockaways. For Moriches Field Brewing Company, a grant from our economic development program was a perfect fit to help them renovate a previously vacant property. A discount through our Vacant Space Revival Program saved them more than $4,000 on their electric bills, and rebates for upgrading to LED lighting are keeping them saving month after month.

Helping revitalize our Island, one business at a time, is something we’re proud to be part of and something definitely worth celebrating.

Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center Art Expression Program By ADRC Culminates In A Touching Art Exhibit In Honor Of World Alzheimer’s Day – September 21, 2023

The Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center (ADRC) is proud to announce an inspiring Art Exhibit in collaboration with the Islip Arts Council in Bay Shore, New York. Artwork will be showcased beginning September 18 –September 30 from 11:00 am – 4:00 pm. A reception recognizing the artists with their family members will be held on Thursday, September 21, 2023, at 1:00 pm at the Art Gallery located in the Westfield Shopping Center, Bay Shore, NY at the end by DICK’S Sporting Goods. This exhibition marks the culmination of a yearlong art program, for over 100 local artists, that has spanned multiple sites across Long Island.

The Art Expression Program, a cornerstone initiative of ADRC, has

provided a profound avenue for individuals to engage their minds through the transformative power of art. This innovative program has consistently aimed to achieve the following objectives:

• Facilitating Communication through Diverse Art Forms: Participants are encouraged to communicate their thoughts and emotions through a wide array of artistic mediums, fostering connections beyond words.

• Mind Stimulation through Creative Creation: The act of creation stimulates participants’ cognitive faculties, invigorating their mental capacities.

• Boosting Self-Esteem through Relational Bonds: The program has

nurtured self-esteem by fostering meaningful relationships and interactions within a supportive community.

• Celebrating Artistic Diversity: ADRC embraces and celebrates every artwork created by participants, recognizing the uniqueness and personal stories behind each piece.

In the eloquent words of Therapy Techniques Using the Creative Arts (2002), “The creative arts stimulate our senses, our bodies, our thoughts, and feelings. For a period, we transcend the bounds of time, space, and physical limitations. Outside our normal realm of existence, we are free to think, feel, and express what seems natural to us.”

Each artwork on

display carries the weight of unique memories, rekindling a tapestry of lived experiences.

ADRC is a grassroots 501c3 nonprofit organization that offers FREE services and programs to families throughout Long Island. Our mission is to provide care, support, and educational programs for families in need, and to be advocates for local families who are coping with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias. All funds raised stay on Long Island. In 2022, ADRC served over 1000 families with care consultations, support groups, educational workshops, and therapy programs.

For more information about ADRC and the upcoming Art Exhibit, please visit www.adrcinc.

Ceremony Celebrates New Interactive Walkway At Historic Suffolk County Farm And Education Center In Yaphank

On Wednesday, September 6, Cornell Cooperative Extension of Suffolk (CCE Suffolk) held the unveiling of a new, interactive walkway at its 272-acre Suffolk County Farm and Educational Center in Yaphank as well as the announcement of a new visitor center. The walkway was funded by National Grid.

Designed with multiple, life-size elements designed for visitor engagement, the walkway features a series of stations that highlight CCE Suffolk’s wide range of program areas. Among the disciplines showcased are agriculture, marine science, gardening and horticulture, camping, life skills education, and family wellness.

The Suffolk County Farm is a working farm that offers hands-on, research-based learning within a year-round, educational environment. It hosts 100,000 visitors each year, 20,000 of whom are schoolchildren.

The farm is also home to unique educational programs for children ranging from pre-K to 12th grade, summer day camps, a nature-based preschool, and special events, among many other offerings. Its 1871

Haybarn is listed on the National Historic Registry.

According to a 2019 report by the state comptroller’s office, Suffolk County ranked fourth among the state’s 62 counties in agricultural sales. The county’s 560 farms generated $225.6 million in sales.

State Senator Dean Murray, State Assemblyman Joe DeStefano, and County Legislators James Mazzarella, Sarah Anker, Nick Caracappa, Sam Gonzalez, and Jason Richberg were among the elected officials participating in today’s event.

“Thanks to National Grid, the Suffolk County Farm now features a dynamic, new walkway providing an immersive experience that captures the essence of CCE’s multifaceted programs,” said Vanessa Lockel, Executive Director of CCE Suffolk. “The visitor center and walkway will together help the farm carry on its tradition of community learning that dates back more than a century.”

“We’re proud to partner with CCE Suffolk to create an interactive walkway that’s designed to educate and inspire visitors to the

Suffolk County Farm,” said Kathy Wisnewski, Director of Customer and Community Engagement at National Grid.

“Community learning is deeply aligned with National Grid’s values, and we’re delighted to contribute to an initiative that broadens public understanding of such critical subjects as sustainability, history, and science.”

“The new walkway is far more than an entry point into this remarkable farm,” said Sonia Spar, President

of the CCE Suffolk Board of Directors. “It’s truly an educational journey in itself. Visitors will enjoy a holistic experience that enables them to appreciate the extraordinary breadth of CCE Suffolk’s offerings in a personal way.”

“While I regret not being able to attend today’s ceremony in person, I support the innovative initiatives undertaken by the Cornell Cooperative Extension of Suffolk at the Suffolk County Farm,” commented Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone. “The interactive walkway emphasizes that the farm is not just a place to visit; it’s a learning hub that exemplifies the rich agricultural heritage and forward-thinking sustainability efforts of our county.”

“Visited by tens of thousands of people each year, the Suffolk County Farm is one of Suffolk’s true gems,” said County Legislator James Mazzarella. “National Grid deserves praise for underwriting a beautiful new walkway that stands as a testament to CCE Suffolk’s ambitious program of community outreach and education.”

“The Suffolk County Farm is emblematic of the leadership role that this county plays in New York State’s agricultural sector,” said Rob Carpenter, Director of the Long Island Farm Bureau. “Its far-reaching educational agenda deepens Long Islanders’ understanding of the world of agriculture. We applaud CCE Suffolk and National Grid for the tremendous work they’ve done here.”

Town Recognizes Lifeguards’ Heroism

Islip Town Supervisor, Angie Carpenter and members of the Town Board were proud to recognize a group of Town of Islip Ocean Lifeguards who facilitated in the rescue of three beachgoers while on duty at Kismet’s ocean-side beach.

On Saturday, July 29, 2023, at approximately 1:30 pm, Ocean Lifeguards Luke Olsen, Noah Chernik and Peter Lepore observed three swimmers caught in a strong rip tide. The swimmers were quickly pulled 20 yards past the breaker line, and

continued to drift, requiring an immediate rescue from the lifeguard team.

Leaping quickly into action, Luke Olsen ran to the water proceeding directly to the swimmers, despite injuring his ankle when entering the rough surf. As Luke swam rescue equipment out to the swimmers, lifeguard Peter Lepore assisted feeding a rescue line from the shore, while lifeguard Noah Chernik proceeded through the water to assist Luke with the swimmers.

Thanks to the quickactions of Luke, Noah and Peter, all three swimmers were recovered and brought back to shore safely, where they required no further assistance.

“This is an important reminder to all, why it is necessary to stay within the boundaries where lifeguards can see you, and a prime example of the heroic dedication and readiness our lifeguards exhibit each and every day,” said Supervisor Carpenter.

Never be without power again!

Momentum Seniors Help Prepare East Islip Students For School

For the third consecutive year, East Islip’s Momentum at South Bay for Rehabilitation and Nursing sponsored a program to donate backpacks and school supplies to needy students from the East Islip School

District. Senior citizens from local community clubs recently helped stuff the backpacks on Aug. 10.

“Thanks to Momentum’s kind donation, we are able to provide 144 backpacks with basic school kits to our elementary

students for families in need,” Superintendent Paul Manzo said. “This donation makes all the difference for these struggling families. We look forward to partnering with Momentum in future endeavors.”

East Islip High School hosted the Ambassadors of Compassion program kick-off on Aug. 25 at Sal Ciampi Field at Boomer Esiason Stadium. The event included 24 school districts and almost 2,000 student-athletes.

The Ambassadors of Compassion program aims to open lines of communication, with the goal to provide studentathletes with the skills necessary to speak to their peers and overcome today’s challenges, as well as empower them for lifelong success. East Islip High School completed

the program during the previous academic year.

Speakers included Ambassadors of Compassion founder Eric Hannah and his wife Jody Hannah, Sayville High School graduate and former Wisconsin and Notre Dame quarterback Jack Coan, Super Bowl champion and television analyst Spencer Tillman, “Boomer & Gio” radio talk show host Gregg Giannotti and “Fast and Furious” actor Noel Gugliemi.

“Witnessing the participation of nearly 2,000 students from over 18 Suffolk County

school districts is not just inspiring, it’s a testament to the bright future we can look forward to from our youth,” East Islip Superintendent Paul Manzo said. “Our East Islip High School students represented our district well and with true EI Pride. This event is a celebration of compassion, unity and the power of our young adults, and it was a privilege to host it. Let’s continue to support these ambassadors of compassion, as they are the leaders of a kinder, more compassionate world.”
