Following the retirement of longtime Principal Dr. Eileen Rossman, Islip High School officially welcomed new Principal Michael Mosca on July 1st.

Mosca brings with him a wealth of educational experience, having spent the last four years as the executive assistant principal at Comsewogue High School and previously as assistant principal at John F. Kennedy Middle School, also in the Comsewogue School District. Prior to his start date, Mosca spent significant time at the high school in an effort to create a smooth leadership transition.

“Becoming the principal of Islip High School is truly a dream come true,” said Mosca. “I have worked my entire career to have an opportunity like this, and I am very grateful that Islip selected me to serve their community.”

During his years as the executive assistant principal, Mosca was responsible for an array of administrative duties, including overseeing the guidance department, supervising building discipline, scheduling and administrating all New York State examinations, providing staff development and maintaining the building and district websites.

Mosca is a strong proponent of integrating modern technology into everyday curriculum.

“The Web is an extremely powerful tool that is here to stay,” he said. “It is our job as educators to teach our students how to use it properly. This provides students an opportunity

Back from vacation. Back to reality.

And so it begins. That slow, tedious transition into all things Autumn.

That gradual acceptance of pumpkin spice and flowering mums and long sleeves and boots, and the reluctant closing of pools and packing away of bathing suits and flip flops.

Say it ain’t so.

Ah, but here it is. May as well embrace it. And while you’re sitting on a

park bench enjoying the cool crisp air (shameless plug alert), take a look at our new Autumn issue of Seasons Magazine for a refresher course on all that Long Island has to offer, no matter the time of year.

From long walks on the beach and picnics in the park to weekends at the wineries and pumpkin patches; from family days at Oktoberfest celebrations and Fall Festivals to “me” time alone on the couch vegging out to the new fall TV season, there is literally something for everyone to enjoy.

A Life Well-Lived The life well lived is one filled with experience.

This experience cannot be wasted. In order to live a fully virtuous life, we must all give back to our community.

Regardless of how fortunate or unfortunate we may be, a key trait of righteousness is a commitment to serve God’s creation. This idea, commonly known as stewardship, is the basis for a well lived life.

I’m not a very religious person. I’ve gone to Catholic School my entire life, but I’ve also had Jewish and Episcopal influences throughout my childhood. Even if we don’t look at

stewardship from a religious perspective, most of us are hardwired to help out people in need.

As a very fortunate person, I find it important to look out for those who are incapable of looking out for themselves. This does not mean acting like a superhero who swoops in to save the day. We can all make a difference on a much different scale.

The main idea behind this article is not to convert people, but to serve as the kind of illustration that someone looking to live a full life must try to exemplify. It isn’t

always about ourselves.

Sometimes, we have to put our wants and needs aside for the good of others.

God wants us to help people. This call to serve my community, fellow humans and Mother Nature exemplify my idea of a life with a purpose. It is not always about our personal gains, but the good of our species.

A life well lived should be studded with outreach and works of mercy. Putting one’s personal convictions aside is crucial to leading a life well lived through service.

Remembrance Ceremony The Islip Town Board will remember the 13th anniversary of the tragic events of September 11th, 2001, during its annual remembrance ceremony to be held at the 9/11 monument, located at Veteran’s Memorial Park, just west of Islip Town Hall, on Thursday, September 11th, at 5 pm. The Islip Town Board will be joined by fellow elected officials, area fire departments, local clergymen, civic leaders, local veterans groups and residents to pay tribute to the men and women who lost their lives during the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

The ceremony, led by Islip Town Supervisor Tom

Croci, will begin with the Lt. Michael Murphy Navy Sea Cadet Corps of West Sayville leading the color guard around Town Hall, with Town Board members and other officials following behind, followed by the Pledge of Allegiance.

An opening prayer will be given by Reverend Joseph Schlafer, Pastor of St. John Nepomucene of Bohemia.

Supervisor Croci will be joined by Blaise Gemellaro, First Vice President of the Islip Town Fire Chiefs, in making opening remarks before Town Board members read the names of the 90 Islip Town residents who perished on that fateful day.

A presentation and laying of a wreath will be conducted by Councilwoman Trish Bergin Weichbrodt and Councilman Steve Flotteron, with musical accompaniment from the Suffolk County Police Emerald Society Pipe Band. A closing prayer will be offered by Rabbi Dr. Steven Moss of B’nai Israel Reform Temple of Oakdale. The ceremony will conclude with closing remarks by Supervisor Croci.

Blood Drive A Success Brookhaven Town employees and residents did their part again this year to help save lives by turning out for the 46th annual blood drive at Town Hall.

The event was cosponsored by the Town and Long Island Blood Services (LIBS), a division

of New York Blood Center, the nation’s largest community-based nonprofit blood collection and distribution organization.

LIBS has been providing life-saving blood products and services to 50 hospitals throughout Nassau, Suffolk and Queens for close to 40 years. This year,

101 units of blood were donated.

New Tax Credit The “Real Property Tax Freeze Credit,” a new tax credit available to eligible taxpayers residing in a municipality that adopts a “freeze-compliant budget”, was adopted as part of the 2014-2015 State Budget.

Gold Ribbon Display Supervisor Ed Romaine has announced that during the month of September, gold ribbons will be displayed on light poles and trees at Town Hall in recognition of National Children’s Cancer Awareness Month.

On January 11th, 2007, Christina succumbed to Rhabdomyosarcoma, a rare soft tissue cancer, after a hard fought and courageous battle. Each year, 13,500 children are diagnosed with cancer and 1 in 5 will lose their battle.
