This clinical research study is targeted to men and women between the ages of 55 and 85 who are experiencing gradual and progressive change in memory function over the last six months. The voluntary study will evaluate the safety and effectiveness of an investigational drug in slowing down the progression of Alzheimer’s disease To determine if individuals qualify for the clinical research study, they must undergo a pre-qualification screener. The results of the pre-qualification will determine if the person may be referred to a local center to discuss the study in further detail.

September is World Alzheimer’s Month.

In recognition of this worldwide initiative to raise awareness for the disease, Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, Inc. (ADRC) is encouraging everyone to learn to spot the signs of dementia, while keeping loved ones in mind who battle or have lost the fight with this disease each day.

Alzheimer’s disease is a degenerative brain disease and is the most common cause of dementia. The neurological disease affects an individual’s ability to perform everyday tasks. This decline is the result of damage to the areas of the brain involved in cognitive function.

Nearly 44 million people worldwide have Alzheimer’s or a related dementia.

Only one in four people with Alzheimer’s have been diagnosed. The cost of caring for Alzheimer’s patients in the world has risen to $605 billion. The social, emotional and financial toll can weigh heavily on Alzheimer’s disease victims and their families.

In 3087, a woman collapsed during a routine child birth; her bones caved in on each other and pierced all of her vital organs, killing her almost instantly. The doctors couldn’t do anything.

After a thorough examination of the mother’s body, the scientists saw that her bones did not break, but bent in on themselves under the weight of her skin. The scientist examined the newborn, fearing the same outcome. However, they did not find fragile bone structure like the mother had; they found an exceptionally strong bone structure. The newborn had bone structure strength equal to an average ten year-old boy. That cycle of strong boned child births continued throughout the years.

In the year 4012, a different birth mutation occurred. A mother carried a weak-boned child and, when she was born, doctors decided on a mercy killing, calling it “sparing the loss for the future generations.” Through further investigation, scientists discovered that the father had a 75% weak bone probability and killed him too, again to “spare the loss for the future generations.” The people started calling them “mercy killings for the good of the future.”

The last mutation occurred in 4070, when a male and a female produced a child with such strong bone structure that the only appropriate term was titaniumboned. When the mother and father where checked, their genes showed that the mother had all strong bone chromosomes and the father had all strong bone chromosomes, in effect producing

a titanium baby.

Titanium babies are extremely rare, so rare that only one in a thousand showed a titaniumboned person. The government was fighting for territory when they heard the news of an improved gene malfunction; they sought them all, literally taking the children out of their mothers’ arms.

Subsequently, they trained these children to fight for territory.

What the government did not consider was how enraged the public would become at the fact that their children were being taken - and that anger and rage started a civil war.

It is now 5028, and the war still continues. I was born in 5009, making me 19 years old. I am one of the few titanium bones left.

Turning Pro By: Jamie Lynn Ryan So I recently decided that, seeing as my obsession with photography has only grown stronger over the years, I should probably invest in an actual camera one of these days – you know, the kind with a lens, adjustable settings, the whole deal.

Smartphones are great and all, but realistically, there are certain images that would be better served by something a bit more… professional.

Add to that the fact that, as a working journalist, I have often contemplated delving into the world of freelance photography, taking one of my favorite hobbies and turning it

into, well, something more than random meandering in search of sunsets and landscapes and quirky angles. Of course, I suppose this pursuit would also involve photographing humans from time to time…not exactly my favorite subject.

See, the beauty of a landscape – aside from its quite literal beauty, of course – is that the only changing factors you need to contend with are weather-related. People, well, they’re a whole different story.

They blink, they look away, they grow impatient and start waving their arms and talking before the flash finishes going off… all great material for the photo album. No wonder

why most of my digital camera roll winds up going straight to the trash.

In this day and age, with all the mobile photography apps available, everyone purports to be a photographer in his or her own right. Take your smartphone, experiment with a couple of filters, post the finished product on Facebook and Instagram… then sit back and wait for the “likes,” “comments” and “shares” to come flooding in. Easy, right?

Personally, I’d like to see some higher quality material on my newsfeed.

Step one: purchase a “real” camera. Step two: learn how to use it. Step three: set off in search of those sunsets – and maybe a few people. Maybe.

Weathered sticks are tumbled in the roiling surf Broken reeds collect in clumps of straw bleached hues Creating a cushion for splinters of shattered seashells and seaweed Tossed about by unbridled waters to collect like a sisal rug While empty horseshoe carapaces lie hollow in the waning sun A haven for tiny crabs to make their home Gulls are silhouetted in the setting rays Wings spread wide, circling for their prey Squawking and squabbling for mollusks they dive for Dropping them on shore to break open for their late day feast

Walkers appear in the tranquil tawny sunset Wave hello, dogs in tow While a cool breeze sings in the air Floating wafts of fragrant mimosa filling me with promise Nightfall shadows splay against the quiet sky Sunset’s blushing hues enhance the late day view Igniting the bay with a dazzling light glow Blooming among grey clusters of closing darkness Bay waters reflect the night sky like iridescent ink Silver tinged waves ripple with delight Dusky rays illuminate the stars Studded like diamonds on black velvet Gazing up to the nocturnal heavens Revisiting the bay’s glory I have discovered Beyond the full moon, now streaming The meaning of nature’s grandeur, unfolding limitless before me.

In order to achieve the rank of Eagle Scout, a young man must exhibit leadership, talent, character and perseverance. Michael’s project was conducted in the Scully mansion at the Seatuck Environmental Center. Michael built a table rack to store folding tables and installed shelving to be utilized for storage of electric equipment and supplies.

Back-to-school preparations aren’t just for students. In the Islip School District, 26 of the 30 teachers who are beginning their teaching career at Islip participated in the district’s new teacher orientation program, including workshops and a special bus tour.

Some were brand new to Islip, many of them leave replacements, while others were in their second or third year of teaching in the district. Islip teachers remain in the induction program and are part of orientation until they are tenured.

Orientation this year

consisted of a two-day program, complete with workshops on management, technology and instructional routines; games where teachers worked together with two of physical education teachers to complete challenges; and model lessons conducted by the district’s New York State Master Teachers.

“New staff gain invaluable insight as they observe how a class is conducted complete with routines and procedures,” said Linda Lippman, the district’s assistant superintendent of administrative services.

“Orientation provides

the opportunity for new teachers to meet and share ideas and concerns.

It cultivates a sense of belonging and reduces the anxiety associated with the first day of school.”

A bus tour of the historic hamlet of Islip had been part of orientation for many years, and was resurrected this year due to the number of new hires.

Community members Kay Erwood and Nancy Libert served as hosts and color commentators, sharing the history and joy of the community with the incoming faculty.

Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone recently welcomed volunteers from the National Ovarian Cancer Coalition’s Long Island Chapter to declare September as Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month.

The coalition’s members, including chapter president Linda Rosen, provided County

Executive Bellone with an update on the status of its education and awareness initiatives throughout the region – including the chapter’s 9th Annual Run/ Walk to Break the Silence on Ovarian Cancer on Saturday, September 26th, at Belmont Lake State Park.

The coalition’s goal is

to provide encouragement and assistance to ovarian cancer survivors and their loved ones through a support and networking system.

The chapter serves Suffolk and Nassau counties, and consists of cancer survivors, families, friends, health care professionals and caregivers.

Hunger Action Day Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone was joined by Randi Dresner, President & CEO of Island Harvest, and Suffolk County Fire, Rescue and Emergency personnel to highlight September 3rd as Hunger Action Day and September as Hunger Action Month.

In honor of Hunger Action Day, Suffolk County donated over 36,950 Meals Ready to Eat (MRE) to Island Harvest to assist the organization with providing meals to over 316,000 Long Islanders on a yearly basis.

“I am proud that Suffolk County has partnered with Island Harvest and a host of not-for-profit

agencies across Suffolk County to distribute more than 51,000 MRE’s to organizations to assist them in serving those in need in Suffolk County,” said County Executive Steve Bellone. “I encourage all residents of Suffolk County to take part in Hunger Action Month as it provides an opportunity to join a movement that has a real and lasting impact on efforts to feed more Long Islanders than ever before.”

Competitors from CHS’s St. Joseph Hospital and Mercy Medical Center did very well in several categories, including 3rd place in the Healthcare Challenge for Mercy, plus 2nd place for St. Joseph’s Christina Guzzone and 3rd place for Mercy’s Kerry Brown in the Female Top Dog category.
