Islip Supervisor Carpenter, Suffolk County Executive Bellone Break Ground On Historic Central Islip Sewer Project

Islip Town Supervisor

Angie Carpenter and Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone were joined by community leaders and elected officials in breaking ground on a long-awaited project that will connect the Central Islip business district to the Suffolk County Sewer system. The project is part of the Town of Islip’s award winning Central Islip Downtown Revitalization Initiative (DRI), which was awarded a $10 million grant by New York State to fund revitalization projects in the community in 2018.

Despite its proximity to the Central Islip train station, mixed-use and transit-oriented development opportunities in Downtown Central Islip have been limited by the lack of sewer infrastructure. Providing access to the sewer system is a critically important part of transforming this downtown corridor into a mixed-use

district. The $12 million sewer project will connect 64 parcels in Central Islip’s central business district along Carleton Avenue, between Suffolk Avenue and Smith Street. Funding for the project includes State, and Federal grants, and construction is expected to take 18 months.

“This historic project is a result of community-based planning and strong local leadership by our partners in the Town of Islip,” said Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone. “I am pleased that the County is able to play an important role in supporting the efforts of Supervisor Carpenter, the Town Board and community leaders in fulfilling a new vision for Central Islip.”

“We are grateful to Suffolk County Executive Bellone for assisting in securing the additional funding needed to bring this project to fruition. This is truly a

partnership of every level of government and, most importantly, a partnership with the community. This essential system in downtown Central Islip will eliminate current limitations to the area’s development, and will promote mixed-uses along the corridor while laying the foundation for future investment. After the unanticipated COVIDrelated delays, it’s wonderful to finally see this project move forward, with no construction cost burden onto the property owners,” said Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter.

“This groundbreaking is a promise kept to the residents of Central Islip after the state secured $10 million for the downtown revitalization project.

Central Islip is a vibrant and growing community, and the infrastructure must keep up with the demands of the future and ensure our

Neighbor Pets’ Place

businesses have what they need to provide the best services to our residents. The connection to the Suffolk County Sewer system will allow our companies and our town, to continue to grow and prosper. I thank County Executive Bellone and Supervisor Carpenter for coming together and working towards building a better Central Islip,” said Assembly Deputy Speaker Phil Ramos.

A $2 million portion of the $10 million DRI grant that the Town was awarded by the New York State Department

of State in 2018 will be used to fund the sewer project. Additional grant funds were obtained from the U.S. Department of Commerce and the Suffolk County Department of Economic Development and Planning’s Jumpstart program.

The Central Islip DRI Strategic Investment Plan (DRI Plan) identifies a number of projects that would leverage key community assets, including its proximity to the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) Central Islip train station as well as the Carleton

Avenue commercial corridor between Suffolk Avenue and Smith Street. The Town’s DRI Plan identifies various improvements including streetscape enhancements, new mixed-use development opportunities, a commercial property improvement fund, and new recreational facilities. The installation of new sewer infrastructure along this segment of Carleton Avenue is a key component for implementing many of the goals and objectives set forth in the DRI Plan.

The Best Advice For Home Buyers Today

Last month I met with several first-time home buyers who were frustrated with the state of the residential home market on Long Island. A few of them tried, and failed, to buy a home; others simply didn’t know where to start. The common thread with all the buyers was unpreparedness; none of them were able to make an immediate move if they found the right house. I gave them some advice which prompted my August article: 12 tips for home buyers today.

1) Determine your budget: Before you start searching for a home, establish a budget that considers your income, expenses, and savings. This will help you understand how much you can afford to spend on a property.

2) Get pre-approved for a mortgage: Obtaining a mortgage pre-approval from a lender will give you a clear idea of how much you can borrow. This will make your home search more focused and help you negotiate with sellers.

3) Research the market: Look at recent sales data, property prices, and trends to understand the market conditions and make informed decisions.

4) Make a list of priorities: Create a list of features and amenities that are essential for your new home. This will help you

narrow down your search and focus on properties that meet your needs.

5) Work with a reputable real estate agent: Find a reliable and experienced real estate agent who can guide you through the home buying process. They will have access to the latest listings, negotiate on your behalf, and provide valuable advice.

6) Visit multiple properties: Don’t rush into buying the first property you see. Visit multiple homes to get a better sense of what’s available in your price range. Take notes and compare each property against your list of priorities.

7) Consider the location: Look for factors like proximity to schools, shopping centers, transportation, and other amenities that are important to you.

8) Get a professional inspection: Hire a professional home

inspector to assess its condition. This will help you uncover any potential issues or repairs needed before finalizing the purchase.

9) Review the paperwork carefully: Before signing any documents, review all contracts and paperwork associated with the purchase. It is best to seek legal advice to ensure you understand the terms and conditions.

10) Don’t overlook additional costs: Be prepared for closing costs, property taxes, homeowners insurance, and maintenance expenses to avoid any surprises.

11) Trust your instincts: While it’s important to consider the practical aspects of buying a home, also trust your instincts and emotions. If a property feels right and meets most of your requirements, it may be the right choice for you.

12) Take your time: Buying a home is a major decision. Carefully consider each step of the process and make informed choices that align with your long-term goals. Remember, these tips are general guidelines, and it’s always recommended to consult with professionals, such as real estate agents and financial advisors, for personalized advice based on your specific situation. Happy house hunting!

Suffolk Credit Union presented college scholarships totaling $37,500 to nine local students attending Suffolk County Community College this fall. The award ceremony was held on August 16, 2023, at the credit union’s Medford branch.

“These scholarships are a result of an ongoing partnership between our credit union and the Suffolk Community College Foundation to help people throughout our communities achieve their educational and career goals,” said Michele Dean, CEO & President, Suffolk Credit Union.

“By alleviating the cost of college for these hardworking students and their families, we position them for financial stability and empower their future success.”

This year, Ashley Bove of Holbrook received a $6,275 scholarship from the LT Michael P. Murphy Memorial Scholarship,

which was matched by Suffolk Credit Union for a total of $12,550. Edward Freudenberg (Yaphank) was awarded $6,275 by Suffolk Credit Union in honor of the Michael E. Reilly Foundation Memorial Scholarship.

Suffolk Credit Union Achievement Scholarships ranging from $2,150-$6,275 were awarded to Robert Cronin (Aquebogue), Hannah Walsh (Dix Hills), Arshiyan Khan (Selden), Alicia Anthony (Dix Hills), Cristal Lainez-Pixtum (Wyandanch), Amy Boos (Brentwood) and Sun Ji Lee (Commack).

Award recipients were selected based on their academic achievements, extracurricular activities, community involvement and essays. Since partnering with the college four years ago, Suffolk Credit Union has sponsored 36 scholarships totaling over $180,000.

Dr. Edward Bonahue, President of Suffolk County Community College,

commented, “These generous scholarships reflect Suffolk Credit Union’s tradition of serving Long Island as a community-focused institution. We look forward to welcoming the recipients to our campus, where they will undoubtedly thrive.”

According to Sylvia A. Diaz, PhD, LMSW, Executive Director, Suffolk Community College Foundation, “We are proud to have this ongoing partnership with Suffolk Credit Union, which honors the students’ achievements and service with these meaningful scholarships.”

Come Support Neighbors Facing Food Insecurity!

On Friday, Sept. 1, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., PSEG Long Island’s Power to Feed Long Island summer food collection drive comes to East Northport.

Food collection bins and a drive-through option will be set up at the Stop & Shop supermarket at 3126 Jericho Turnpike, East Northport, where members of the public can donate nonperishable items and household essentials for neighbors facing food insecurity.

With your help and the generous donations of fellow Long Islanders, the initiative aims to collect the equivalent of 50,000 meals during July, August and September. Last year, thanks to your kindness, the equivalent of more than 42,000 meals was collected for the Power to Feed Long Island initiative.

Hundreds of thousands of Long Island families struggle with hunger and food insecurity throughout the year. During the summer months, there is a significant reduction in food donations to local food banks, pantries and programs. Compounding the issue, children are not in school where they can

Fosters Wanted For Two Loving Pets

receive free and reducedcost breakfast and lunch. In addition, the pandemic and the increased inflation rate have further strained local food pantries and emergency feeding programs served by Island Harvest.

Please consider donating some of the healthy foods you feed your own family, pet food or personal care items, including:

Nonperishable food (no glass jars, please): Healthy varieties of canned foods, such as low-sodium beans, vegetables, soups, pasta sauces and tomato varieties, tuna and chicken, along with rice, pasta, popcorn kernels, nut butters, olive and canola oil, spices and pet food.

Household essentials: Toilet paper, paper towels, hand sanitizer, laundry detergent and dish soap.

Personal care items: Toothpaste, toothbrushes, deodorant, soap, shampoo, conditioner, feminine care products and shaving products, antibacterial wipes and washcloths.

Baby care items: Diapers, wipes, formula, creams, ointments and baby wash.

If you cannot participate on this day, please consider

making a donation online at www.psegliny.com/feedli

– Island Harvest estimates every dollar is the equivalent of two meals.

The schedule of Power to Feed collection drives is as follows:

· Sept. 1 8 a.m.

– 3 p.m. Stop & Shop3126 Jericho Turnpike, East Northport

· Sept. 15 8 a.m. – 3 p.m. Stop & Shop - 575 West Montauk Highway, West Babylon

Onsite, information will be available from PSEG Long Island on electric service payment plans and programs and ways to save money through energy efficiency options. For additional information on Power to Feed Long Island, visit www.psegliny.com/feedLI. For more information on PSEG Long Island’s assistance and payment programs for customers experiencing financial hardship, visit https://www. psegliny.com/myaccount/ customersupport/ financialassistance. Due to unfortunate circumstances, the owner of two dogs is looking for a foster. She is presently living in her car, but is actively seeking employment and a new home. She is urgently trying to find an individual to temporarily care for both until she is able to do so again properly.

Wolf is a 10 year old Husky and Kay is a 5 year old Texas Heeler Mix. They are very attached to one another, therefore the foster must be willing to take both. They are friendly, trained, up to date on all shots, good with children and are spayed/neutered. Wolfie does well with all

dogs and cats and Kay is good with medium to large sized dogs.

Transportation of the dogs to your home for drop off and pick up would be provided. If you are interested or would like more information, please call Tanya as soon as possible at 914-309-5949.
