It all began back in elementary school; earlier, even. The clipping in the local South Bay Newspaper heralding the entrance of the Class of 2000...into kindergarten. I was a part of that storied graduating class, and as we progressed through the next dozen or so years of schooling, the various accolades of my fellow Lindy alums would be documented within the pages of our neighborhood paper. My own graduation announcement was featured there, as I moved on from the halls of Lindy High and began my studies in journalism on the opposite shore at the C.W. Post campus of Long Island University.

Four years later, it was time to take a stab at a career in the real world and, upon the encouragement of my mom, I sent a random query to the newly minted South Bay’s Neighbor, thinking it might be an ideal place to gain my footing in the field. As luck would have it, the paper was in the process of a major overhaul, transitioning from its rather antiquated black and white format and beginning the arduous task

of streamlining what had been, to that point, an extremely laborintensive, manual ordeal week after week.

I entered the picture as an editorial assistant, designated as the one to cull through the incoming e-mails and process the local community news submitted by readers. Photos, press releases, upcoming events whatever seemed newsworthy was prepared, along with a selection of handwritten articles penned by our original editor, Lillian Nolin, still a fixture at the old Lindenhurst office. As I worked from my desk in Farmingdale, monitoring the weekly content, I was fortunate to be surrounded by a staff that took me under its collective wing, teaching me the ins and outs of editing, formatting and even a little graphic design.

Fast forward three or so years, and the 11 original editions had morphed into 43. Lillian had retired, leaving me as the “veteran” editor, now responsible for penning my own weekly column, serving as a “roving reporter” of sorts covering select community events, taking photographs, and coming up with my own concepts for new features.

At all of 25 years-old, I was entrusted with the responsibility of driving this product to the next level editorially - and I loved every second of it.

Over the next decade {wow, a whole decade}, the structure of South Bay’s Neighbor progressed and transformed, as did the staff, the content and the design. In the winter of 2014, we added a magazine to the mix, introducing Seasons, our high-end glossy feature, publishing five times a year. Always evolving, this was yet another opportunity to be a part of a product from the ground up, and to showcase our creativity in a new format for an even wider audience.

What began as a first step into the field of journalism turned into a large portion of my career, a solid foundation from which to build upon and grow. I have often said that, although my 13-year tenure here has been, technically, one job, it has felt like several all rolled into one. In many ways, the evolution has come full circle - from the local clipping back in 1987, to now, as I pen my second-to-last column for the old hometown South Bay...a Lindy girl at heart, always.

Middle School Sewing Star

East Islip Middle School student Stephanie Landaverde is proud of her newfound ability to sew pillows and clothing and design new scarves.

Landeverde, who will attend eighth grade this fall, began to learn how to sew in her family and consumer science class during the last school year. She enjoyed it so much that her parents bought her a Brother

sewing machine, which she brought to school daily. Landaverde met with her FACS teacher, Patricia Emmons Fritz, before school and after school to enhance her impressive sewing skills and help her to create more pillows and scarves. She also assisted other students with their sewing projects.

“Once you start something that you enjoy, you should continue doing

it,” said Landaverde of her sewing.

“It is such a pleasure to see a young student who has learned the skills of sewing and cooking in her family and consumer science classroom, and now spends time at home practicing her art and learning new skills that will help her in the future,” said FACS director Israel Malinowitzer.

8th Grade High School Preview In preparation for moving up to Islip High School, the entire eighth grade at Islip Middle School visited the high school this year as part of the first ever “Eighth Grade Rounds”

As the Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts (LIHSA) Class of 2018 bid farewell to their alma mater, 22 students walked away with major scholarships to help them along their respective paths. These students were honored for a variety of achievements in their chosen disciplines.

Emma Boudin of the Half Hollow Hills CSD won the Gertrude McGuire Scholarship for outstanding achievement in the visual arts and significant contributions to her school community.

Alex Pinals of the Northport-East Northport UFSD earned the Ava M. Favara Scholarship for consistently demonstrating the qualities of leadership, good citizenship and generosity of spirit.

Ta’Keal Grier of the Hempstead UFSD won the Claire Q. Jackman Scholarship for outstanding achievement and significant contributions to his school community.

Andrew Culbreath, also of Hempstead, received the Chrysalis Scholarship in remembrance of former LIHSA student Meghan Murphy.

Anna Zerella of the Levittown UFSD earned the Janice Aguilera Scholarship, presented to a dedicated and passionate dancer who is always

willing to collaborate with and support her fellow student artists. Sabrina Greig of the Bethpage UFSD won the Melinda Bengels Scholarship for demonstrating great potential in dance. Abigail Flicker of the Locust Valley CSD earned the Seymour Weiner Scholarship for making this year’s most outstanding achievement to the performing arts.

Piping Plover Program Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone today announced that the County’s 2018 Piping Plover Conservation Program has resulted in a record number of successful piping plover pairs and fledges this summer while retaining recreational opportunities for outer beach enthusiasts at Smith Point County Park.

In prior years, a vast majority of the outer beach area at Smith Point County Park was closed for public access to protect the plover breeding grounds.

Realizing the importance of enhancing public access to the popular outer beach, the Department of Parks and Recreation updated its Endangered Species Protection Program with the goal of complying with federal conservation laws while fostering greater public access to the outer beach.

“Through careful planning and enhanced monitoring of the federally-protected plover, we were able to strike a balance to protect the plover while enhancing access to the outer beach

for our four-wheel drive enthusiasts,” said County Executive Steve Bellone.

“I would like to commend all those involved in the protection efforts and also the general public for their cooperation and understanding.”

When first launched in 1997, the Endangered Species Protection Program resulted in 32 pairs of plovers producing 28 fledges. This year’s numbers produced 62 pairs with 100 fledges, the highest number of fledges in the program’s history.

This will result in our beaches opening sooner for full public access. If the plovers need to re-nest, the process is delayed and partial beach closures extended.”

Among the honorees were the East Islip Special Olympics team who on May 19th, and after months of preparation and training, exhibited determination despite heavy rains, bringing home a total of 24 medals.

Marching Band Camp The Connetquot High School marching band recently concluded their annual summer camp on August 10th after spending a week mastering a series of visually stunning and well-rehearsed routines.

The camp is designed to help young marching band performers expand their skillsets, as drum majors, color guard members and marching band instrumentalists learned from outstanding

performers and teachers alike during the weeklong program.

“This year’s summer program consisted of 200 campers spanning grades 9-12 and included veterans of this year’s award-winning group along with district teachers and mentors,” said marching band director Greg Johnson.

“The students have worked very hard all week and the student-leaders have been outstanding.”

This year’s performance schedule includes invitations to the Columbus Day Parade in Manhattan, the Newsday Marching Band Festival at Hofstra University and the QVC Christmas Parade in Westchester, Pennsylvania.

The Connetquot High School marching band and color guard perform at all home football games as well as the annual Homecoming football game.

Day Trip to Dorney On August 15th, more than 30 children and teenagers from the Bellport area boarded a charter bus at Robert Rowley Park for a day of fun and excitement at Dorney Park & Wildwater Kingdom in Allentown, Pennsylvania.

Gershow Recycling sponsored the trip, which was organized by Steven

Hughes, a Bellport resident and a longtime Gershow customer.

Mr. Hughes asked the company for assistance in sponsoring the trip and Gershow agreed. The sponsorship went to cover the costs of transportation and admission to the amusement park.

Mr. Hughes personally

invited the children to spend a day at Dorney Park, with the families’ permission. The children, whom Mr. Hughes knows from the Bellport community, have few opportunities to travel and socialize with their peers in a fun and positive atmosphere.

Summer Social Raises Funds

On August 8th, the Special Olympics New York Leadership Council hosted its 12th annual Summer Social at the Marquee New York. Nearly 550 New Yorkers came together to support and celebrate unity and inclusion. All proceeds, including ticket sales and silent auction funds, are being donated to the athletes of Special Olympics New York.

The event raised over $125,000 to support of the Special Olympics New York mission which allows athletes to

showcase their talents and abilities, while improving self-esteem, developing social interactions and enhancing leadership skills on and off the playing field.

A special tribute was made to John Cronin, John’s Crazy Socks’ Founder and Special Olympics New York athlete.

Special Olympics New York expressed its gratitude to the many generous supporters and the very talented Leadership Council who hosted the event, as well as contributed their time,

talent and treasure to serve and bring this event to the New York City community.

Walk in the Park The Alzheimer’s Foundation of America (AFA), together with the Town of Babylon, will be hosting an “Alzheimer’s Walk in the Park” on Saturday, October 13th, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. (rain date October 14th).

The event will take place at the AFA-Town of Babylon Respite Care Relief Park (200 East Sunrise Highway, Lindenhurst), which serves residents with Alzheimer’s disease and their caregivers. Proceeds raised from the event will support the Respite Care Relief Park.

Individuals of all ages are invited to take part in the walk to raise Alzheimer’s awareness and support local families affected

by Alzheimer’s disease.

The family-friendly event will also feature health and wellness activities, music, entertainment, children’s activities and refreshments.

Free, confidential memory and hearing screenings will also be offered.

“More than 50,000 Long Island families are living with Alzheimer’s disease, and this event is all about bringing people together to support them. Each person who participates in the walk will be making a difference,” said Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr., AFA’s president and CEO. “We invite everyone to walk with us on October 13th and enjoy a fun-filled day of activities, all while helping Long Islanders living with Alzheimer’s disease.”

“I encourage all of our residents to come be a part of this great event.

Whether you have dealt with Alzheimer’s firsthand or not, it is a great opportunity to support your friends, neighbors and other members of our community who do. Thank you to the members of the AFA team for all of their hard work in the planning of this walk and I am looking forward to a great day,” said Babylon Town Supervisor, Rich Schaffer.

The Respite Care Relief

Park is the first of its kind in the United States.

Located next to Babylon Town Hall, it is a peaceful, scenic, dementia-friendly place where caregivers can go to take a break and enjoy the outdoors, as well as feel comfortable bringing a loved one with Alzheimer’s or another dementiarelated illness. The Park includes educational information about dementia and Alzheimer’s disease, along with benches, a brick walkway, a gazebo and landscaping.

Docking stations are also available where people can plug in phones to play music, which often aids in memory and brain stimulation.

Older People Improve Life For Others And Themselves (NAPSI)—Many older Americans have discovered that sharing their accumulated wisdom with others who need help can be a big win all around.

Here’s a look at two ways you can stretch your mind and show your heart: Experience Corps AARP Foundation Experience Corps unites teachers, schools and older adults to improve children’s academic and social outcomes. This benefits the children, the schools and the volunteers.

The program has been proven to help children who aren’t reading at grade level become better readers by the end of third grade. Last school year, 76 percent of students who were below grade level at the beginning of the year raised their reading and literacy performance by one or more proficiency levels with the help of Experience Corps volunteers.

The goal is to improve children’s literacy, strengthen communities,

develop cultures of inspiration in schools and support hardworking teachers.

It’s already changed the lives of thousands of children in schools across America.

Volunteers should be age 50 or older; have at least a high school diploma or GED; pass a criminal background check; pass a basic literacy screening; attend 25 hours of annual training; and have five to 15 hours a week to offer during the school year.

Tax-Aide AARP Foundation also runs Tax-Aide, the nation’s largest free tax assistance and preparation service, giving special attention to those 50 and older. It offers free tax-filing help to those who need it most. You do not need to be a member of AARP or even a retiree to use this free service.

IRS tax-certified volunteer preparers in libraries, malls, banks, community centers and senior centers answer questions and prepare tax returns. In addition

to earned and retirement income reporting, they can also help with investment income (interest, dividends, and capital gains for Schedule D), Schedule C for individuals with small businesses that have less than $25,000 in annual expenses, and various health care, education, child and earned income credits.

Executive Director Named Jennifer Marino Rojas recently was named executive director of the Child Care Council of Suffolk (CCCS). Every working family on Long Island makes a decision about child care. The Child Care Council of Suffolk’s goal is to make that decision easier. The agency works with thousands of families and child care providers every year to

ensure that working parents have access to quality child care. Rojas has extensive knowledge of the myriad issues surrounding the child care industry as wells as its critical importance to Long Island economic development and to building a successful future workforce.

Prior to being named executive director, Rojas served as the Child Care

Council of Suffolk’s associate executive director as well as a consultant to the Long Island Pre-K Initiative. The Centerport resident has devoted nearly two decades working to improve policies and programs in New York that affect children and families. Prior to joining CCCS, she was vice president of Grants and Operations at the Rauch

Foundation in Garden City, where she was responsible for grant-making and dayto-day operations. From 2007 to 2012, Rojas was the deputy executive director for the Children’s Defense Fund – New York, where she managed the policy, legislative and advocacy efforts around children’s health, juvenile justice, child welfare, education and early childhood

learning. Prior to that, she served in the City of New York’s Administration for Children’s Services in various capacities, including: Family Court attorney, chief of staff and associate commissioner for the Division of Child Care and Head Start.

Rojas is a member of the New York State Board of Regents Early Childhood Blue Ribbon Committee

and also serves on the Board of Directors of the New York State Early Care & Learning Council. She is a graduate of Marist College, Poughkeepsie, New York, and holds a Juris Doctor degree from The Columbus School of Law at The Catholic University of America, Washington, D.C.

Transformative Journey Growing up in Brentwood, Leslie Peralta saw that her community had many health and wellness needs.

This thought, combined with her interest in science pushed her to study health sciences. She attended Johns Hopkins University and majored in biology, then followed that with a Master’s in Biomedical Sciences at Rutgers University and a stint teaching science to high schoolers in New Jersey. Her goals grew and she pursued medical school. Now Leslie is among the 136 students at Stony Brook University School of Medicine making up the 2018 incoming class.

The students, their families and Stony Brook faculty celebrated and officially launched the students’ medical school journey at Stony Brook University’s traditional White Coat Ceremony. The 21s t annual event was held on August 12th at the Student Activities Center.

Leslie and all of her classmates are on a transformative journey. In a profession built on saving lives, the journey begins with rigorous training about the human body, training in clinical skills and understanding how to think and communicate like a physician, and learning how to implement new technologies into patient care.

“Your futures will be filled with many firsts – your first patient, your first diagnosis, your first clinical success, your first patient death,” said Kenneth Kaushansky, MD, MACP, Senior Vice President for the Health Sciences and Dean of the School of Medicine. “Medicine is a challenging, rewarding profession that will transform your life and the lives of your patients. Your white coat is a symbol of professionalism, scientific excellence and compassionate care. Wear it well while at Stony Brook

and in your future lives as physicians.”

The class is a diverse and talented group with many interests in medicine. Sixty percent are residents of New York State and 40 percent hail from 16 other states or from around the world. They represent 70 undergraduate schools, have a collective grade point average of 3.80 and an average national MCAT score in the 90th percentile.

Only 9 percent of the total 2018 applicants were accepted into Stony Brook.

Among some of the other students are: Alex Baez,

a native of Colorado who came to Stony Brook as an undergraduate and was inspired to choose medicine as he took part in the Stony Brook ambulance volunteer corps on campus. He has an interest in the neurosciences and patient care. Alex is among the students enrolled in Stony Brook’s MD/PhD program. Lara Ambrosi, who has been an international citizen as her father works for the United Nations, hopes to become an oncologist but is open to other areas of medicine. She has a goal

to be a physician-scientist within some specialty. Simon Nin Riccardi Zhu studied philosophy and economics as an undergraduate. Inspired by his mother, a physician, Simon is considering psychiatry but also has interest in the expanding arena of global health.

Leslie Peralta is not sure what specialty she will choose, thought she favors OB/GYN. She is thrilled to be back in her home zone and has a goal after graduation to be a physician focusing on the many health and preventive medicine needs of her Brentwood community, or a similar community somewhere in the country.

Jack Fuhrer, MD, Associate Dean for Admissions, and Latha Chandran, MD, MPH, Vice Dean, Academic and Faculty Affairs, jointly announced and presented each student with a physician-intraining white coat. Dean Kaushansky administered the Hippocratic Oath, which the students recited for the first time – another symbolic entry into medicine.

Ramon Parsons, MD/PhD, Class of 1992, was presented with the 2018 Distinguished Alumnus Award and honored for his distinguished career as a cancer researcher. He is the Director of the Tisch Cancer Institute at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. Lauren Ferrante, MD, Class of 2007 was presented with the Outstanding Recent Graduate Award. Dr. Ferrante, Assistant Professor of Pulmonology and Critical Care Medicine at Yale School of Medicine, is a recognized leader in clinical outcomes research at the interface of critical care medicine and geriatrics.

Kathy Seff will be installing the more than 500 glass tiles in sections of fencing outside the library’s Selden location, creating a beautiful art installation to enhance the space and be on view for all to see and enjoy.

On Saturday, September 22nd at 11 a.m., community members are invited to attend the installation celebration at

the Middle Country Public Library in Selden. All are welcome.

Throughout the summer community members of all ages and backgrounds contributed their talents to the Reflections Creative Community Art Project at the Middle Country Public Library. The project began in June with kick off weekend sessions featuring kiln glass artist Kathy Seff where participants learned about working with glass as an art form and gained hands-on experience as well.
