Community College School of Nursing boasts more than 7,100 alumni, is the largest program in New York State and the sixth largest in the nation.

The School of Nursing is asking all alumni to contact the College to become part of a celebration leading up to the 50th pinning ceremony on May 15th, 2015.

All those volunteering to help organize the event will be designated alumni ambassadors and deputized to help spread the word about the anniversary and its significance.

Computer Connections Donation

Teachers Federal Credit Union (TFCU), Long Island’s largest memberbased credit union, recently donated $1000 to the Retired Seniors Volunteer Program (RSVP) of Suffolk, a nonprofit whose mission is to provide diverse volunteer opportunities for people 55 and older who wish to remain active and make a difference in their communities.

Brightening The Day New York Mets players Zack Wheeler and Travis d’Arnaud brightened the day for some patients at Cohen Children’s Medical Center this week, posing for pictures and handing out gifts and autographs.

The Southold Historical Society is pleased to announce that local artist Pat Feiler was this year’s winner of the “Thomas Currie-Bell Memorial Purchase Prize” in the North Fork Annual juried art exhibition held at the Southold Historical Society’s Reichert Family Center.

Feiler’s work, entitled “S. S. Rendezvous and Race,”

was selected from nearly 50 entries submitted.

The painting depicts several vessels, including the S.S. 76, whose local owner recently remarked “I consider the painting outstanding and Patricia an exceptional artist.”

Patricia Feiler lives in Mattituck, New York. Her eclectic paintings reflect her fascination with the luminous colors of Long

Island’s beaches, sky, and farmland. A native of Center Moriches, New York, Patricia Feiler’s family has a strong tradition in writing, music and art.

Not So Fast By: Jamie Lynn Ryan The autumn season is upon us. Well, at least in terms of retail, it is. As far as I’m concerned, there is still nearly one entire month of potential beach weather before us. No matter how many pairs of cute boots I see in stores, or autumn-scented candles and pumpkin-flavored everything, I remain in denial. Not yet.

Maybe in a week or two…or three. What’s the big rush? For a region that happens to be blessed with all four seasons, we sure don’t take too much time to appreciate them.

Longer days mean more time to do things too, instead of rushing home from work to hibernate on the couch in front of the TV. Although, I must say, I am looking forward to my shows returning for the Fall season.

That said, the one regret I have about summer

“ending” is that all the catching up I was planning to do on various series and books, well, it just didn’t happen for one reason or another. Oh well. That’s what rainy days are for, I suppose. That and – dare I say it – any upcoming snow days??

In the meantime, try to enjoy this “last” week of summer – and maybe even the next few weekends as well. There will be plenty of time for raking and shoveling and all that later on. Soak up the sun – and the summer – while you can.

RSVP of Suffolk’s Community Computer Connections Program provides, free of charge, refurbished computers to financially challenged families on Long Island.

These computers can enhance job skills, promote academic success and, for the homebound, provide a means of communication with the outside world.

Through this program, RSVP of Suffolk volunteers refurbish these computers and give them to low-income recipients. An RSVP volunteer also delivers and installs the donated computer.

Stuttering is a frustrating and embarrassing problem for millions of people, but it can be especially tough on elementary school-age children.

Help is available for parents, teachers, and speech-language pathologists at most public libraries in the form of a DVD designed to help school-age children who stutter. Some libraries have an older video version.

“It’s meant to give speech-language pathologists the tools they need to deal with stuttering in this age group, but it also offers good ideas for parents and teachers,” said Professor Peter Ramig of the University of Colorado at Boulder. Ramig is one of five nationally recognized experts appearing in the DVD produced by the nonprofit Stuttering Foundation.

The DVD features students from first through sixth grade, some of whom talk about their experiences with stuttering. They talk openly about the teasing they face from classmates and how their stuttering sometimes makes them feel about themselves.

“We focus on demonstrating a variety of therapy strategies that are appropriate in working with children who stutter,” adds Ramig. He appears in the DVD along with speech-language pathologists Barry Guitar, Ph.D., of the University of Vermont, Hugo H. 4. Put down the double bacon cheeseburger. It sounds like a delicious option after that allnighter you pulled, but your heart won’t be happy with you. Instead, reach for a grilled turkey burger piled high with veggies like avocado, tomato, onions and lettuce. In other words, choose lean cuts of meat and poultry without skin and extra fat removed. Developmental Disabilities Institute (DDI), the leading service provider for children and adults with autism on Long Island, and its Starting Early Program were the beneficiaries of some much needed help from a group of 10 volunteers courtesy of Goldman Sachs. On July 11th, volunteers spent the day greatly improving the aesthetics and creating an attractive gateway into the new “Busy Town” playground.

Rob Martin, a Goldman Sachs employee and parent of a child enrolled in the Starting Early Program, helped organize the beautification program as a “Community Team Works

Project.”

“Our group from Goldman Sachs was delighted to assist in this effort on behalf of DDI,” commented Martin.

“It was the source of tremendous fulfillment for each of us when we saw the finished product and more importantly, the students playing in this beautiful environment.”

The work was completed at DDI’s Little Plains campus, which serves approximately 300 children with autism and other developmental disabilities.

From infant to fiveyears old, DDI’s Starting Early Program provides superior educational and therapeutic services for children who present with

developmental delays. DDI graduates over 92% to their home school district kindergarten programs.

Goldman Sachs volunteers spent the day planting shrubs and flowers to enhance the look of the new playground.

Students entertained the volunteers by singing some graduation songs to show their appreciation.

“The staff and students are so thankful for all the hard work that the Goldman Sachs volunteers did to make “Busy Town” a delightful and colorful place to play and enjoy,” commented Michelle Lawrence, Education Behavior Specialist for DDI.

Put down the cupcake and fight your stress without food. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, try yoga, take a walk, go to the gym or call friends or family. Remember, you’re allowed to take breaks from studying in order to recharge.

9. We like to move it, move it. Cue the dance music, lace up those running shoes or grab a Frisbee. No matter how you like to move it (move it!), maintaining weight is about burning the same amount of calories as you consume. Developing a regular exercise routine

(at least 30 minutes a day, 5 days a week) is the best way to burn additional calories and manage stress.

10. Take your phone out. No, not to tweet. To check your portions. One of the easiest pitfalls for college students is all-youcan- eat cafeterias. Portion control can help you keep track of the foods you are consuming without going overboard. For instance, a serving of chicken breast (3 ounces) is about the size of a smart phone and a medium banana is about the size of a pencil. Team LICADD

On August 3rd, in Central Park, the New York City Triathlon saw New York’s finest athletes swim, run and cycle to glory through New York City. This year, the roster included four of our city’s most dedicated athletes who made up Team LICADD. Together they raised over $11,000.00 for the council’s lifesaving work here on Long Island.

Ed Kerner, Lee Goddard, Jeffrey Crane and Mary Alice O’Connor, in her first ever NYC Triathlon, participated in this year’s event for LICADD and brought spirit and heart into this annual New York tradition for Team LICADD. The participants dove into the Hudson River at 5 a.m. and brought in record times for this leg of the

event. The 1500 kilometer swim in the Hudson brought in times of 18 and 19 minutes for the team, they then jumped onto their bicycles and cycled 40 kilometers down the West Side Highway. The last part of this event was a 10K run in Central Park, again with stellar times.

“This is my second New York City Triathlon this year, it meant even more to me to do this event. We all see and feel the crisis here in every part of New York. By competing in the NYC Triathlon I am able to “Pay It Forward,” said Ed Kerner. “When my wife and I moved back into the city a few years ago, I got involved with this event and I look forward to doing it again next year for Team LICADD. To me, nothing

is more important than the work this organization does on Long Island and I was proud to be involved.”

East Islip has offered the two-year Cisco Network Academy program for the past 13 years, readying students for both college and careers in the information technology field.

Utilizing a Cisco lab that allows students to work on authentic Cisco equipment like routers and switches, more than 350 students have participated in the program, learning through real-world activities such as network design and troubleshooting, and accessing all class materials and exams through an online portal.

The course prepares several dozen students per year for the Cisco Certified Entry Network Technician exam. During the past school year, senior Dan Murphy passed the certification exam on his first attempt, becoming the first East Islip student to pass the CCENT exam before completing the class. CCENT certification is a benchmark for proficiency in the IT field.

Murphy also placed 39th in the North American Cisco Netriders Competition against Cisco students in high school and college from across the U.S. and

Canada.

East Islip’s Cisco Network Academy class is taught by Paul McHugh, who was recently designated by Cisco as an Advanced Level instructor, recognizing his status as one of the top 25 percent of instructors globally in crucial areas such as student performance, use of resources, attention to student needs, participation in online instructor communities and completion of professional development opportunities.

New England National Competition held at Foxwoods Resort & Casino July 21st through 25th, and to acknowledge the studio’s 25th Anniversary.

Legislator Cilmi received a tour of Dance Connection’s state-ofthe-art studio in Islip, spoke with President and Artistic Director Mary Naftal, Competition Team teachers, choreographers, and several team members including Emily Civitella who won the National Title of Miss Junior Dancers Inc. the 16 Elite Level, 4 High Gold Level and numerous judges’ choice awards the team won and was treated to a performance by the team as well.

Dance Connection’s Competition Team had 13 performances place in the top 10 of their respective divisions and also won the Studio Challenge with a performance that included the studio’s teachers, Dad’s Company, and Competition Team parents.

Legislator Cilmi presented Dance Connection with a proclamation acknowledging the studio’s 25 Year Anniversary, their wonderful accomplishments and dedication to dance education.

Thousands of people, including such celebrities as Bill Gates, Oprah Winfrey and Jimmy Fallon, have had buckets of icy water dumped on them in a bid to raise funds for the ALS Association.

Many, including the County Executive, are also writing $100 checks to the organization.

“We all can’t lose sight of the fact that this campaign has made a tremendous impact toward funding research, providing patient services and promoting awareness about ALS,” the County Executive said.

“ALS Association reports a 1,000% spike in donations since the campaign started and I am proud to also contribute to the cause.”

The County Executive in turn challenged Congressman Steve Israel, Southampton Supervisor Anna Throne-Holst and the entire Stony Brook University football team to take the fundraising challenge.

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, is a neurodegenerative disease.

The ALS Association estimates that as many as 30,000 Americans may have the disease at any given time.
