he Islip Animal Shelter and Adopt-a-Pet Center recently said goodbye to their longest resident, Hazel, a tan-colored American Staffordshire Terrier mix, as her new owners signed the adoption paperwork. Hazel came to the Islip Animal Shelter on June 14th, 2013 as a shy and skinny six month-old puppy.

She was passed by for 790 days before her new family came along. Pictured, the staff of the Shelter bids farewell to their buddy Hazel.

Buddy the Birthday Boy I’m baaaaack!

The human is busy putting the finishing touches on Seasons™ Magazine this week, so she asked me to fill in yet again.

From what I’ve heard, readers absolutely loved my last column and have been writing in regularly to check on my wellbeing.

Thanks for the love, and all the “half-birthday” wishes.

So how does it feel to celebrate six months in the bowl, you ask? Not too shabby. I received my very first birthday present in the form of a gift card to Pet Smart, and the human says I can pick out anything I want. I’ll have to give it some thought. I hear they

have even bigger plants than the one I currently reside with, or maybe a castle… or a seashell to sleep in… the possibilities are endless.

My one gripe is that, after weeks of this birthday talk, there was no cake – not even a cupcake, a cookie, a crumb… nothing. I thought I was finally going to sample a morsel when the human’s “Mommy” came over and tempted me with a Flying Saucer ice cream sandwich. How yummy those chocolate crumbs looked.

But, alas, the rogue flake was snatched from my waiting jaws.

What a tease.

That aside, the day was very enjoyable, with much

singing and celebrating in honor of me and all my finned glory. And well it should have been. I am, after all, the most lively addition to that drab little apartment, if I do say so myself. I even complement the throw pillows and accents. I am, to put it quite simply, the finest accessory in the place.

I suppose I should also note that my milestone was shared by the human – something about turning 33 I think. That seems like an awfully big number.

Maybe that’s why she’s so tall. Such are some of the thoughts I ponder as I swim my daily 437 laps around the bowl…

Crisis Counselor Training Everyone has moments when the support and understanding of others seem hard to find, and it is for such moments that RESPONSE of Suffolk County, Inc. was born. RESPONSE of Suffolk County is a nationally accredited, non-profit agency that provides a confidential and anonymous hotline for anyone who needs to talk. RESPONSE is seeking volunteer crisis counselors and will offer a free training program to those interested in becoming the caring voice on the other end of the line.

Part one of the training program will be held on Saturday, September 26th and Sunday, September 27th, and continues on Saturday, October 3rd and Sunday October 4th.

Sessions will run from 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. each day and trainees must attend all four sessions. Training will take place on the campus of Stony Brook University.

No experience is necessary,

only a sincere willingness to learn and grow, and the ability to make a six-month commitment of four hours a week is required.

Response provides two types of telephone assistance lines and both are heavily dependent on volunteer talent. The crisis intervention hotline takes over 18,000 calls each year about a wide range of subjects – substance abuse, domestic violence, depression, family conflict, grief, suicidal thoughts among many others. The support line provides over 4,000 telephone “visits” yearly to individuals who are homebound or have limited social support due to a physical disability or mental illness. Training for both the hotline and support line counselors includes lecture, roleplaying exercises, and private and group supervision. College credit is available and bilingual volunteers are especially needed.

Maker Faire Attendees Makers from across the country converged on Washington, D.C. in June to attend the inaugural National Maker Faire, an all-ages gathering of tech enthusiasts, crafters, educators, tinkerers, hobbyists, engineers, science clubs, authors, artists, students and

Among the exhibitors chosen to participate were two local school librarians, Kristina Holzweiss of Bay Shore Middle School and Gina Seymour of Islip High School, who were promoting their successful SLIME endeavor from earlier in the spring. The

teachers have applied for Maker Faire status for SLIME, which stands for Students of Long Island Maker Expo.

At the Faire, Holzweiss and Seymour provided attendees with numerous hands-on maker activities utilizing recyclables.

They are walking to raise awareness about the limited options that children born and diagnosed as being medically frail, chronically ill or suffering from any type of life threatening condition(s) have as far as services available to help them when and/or if they leave the hospital. These children have medical conditions that often require intensive nursing care, and other services that, if are available, are very fragmented and difficult to coordinate.

The daunting task of home care is extremely overwhelming, especially without an agency available to coordinate the services needed to support such child at home.

Until Angela’s House, there were no local specialized homes or facilities available that could care for these children and their unique needs.

The nearest facilities were often out of state, leaving families in a very difficult position – have their child in a setting where they would

receive quality care and travel hours to see them, or place them in a nonage appropriate setting and have them close to home. These voids in the system make a horrifying situation even worse.

Angela’s House, founded in 1992, offers hope for families and children living with severe medical conditions. Their home care programs works with over 600 children that live at home with their parents, by coordinating the home care services needed to support these children living at home. This may include services such as: medical equipment, nursing support, therapies, medications and making their homes handicapped accessible.

Angela’s House also has three beautiful specialty homes that have the ability to offer children, with often very severe medical needs,

The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence, Inc. (LICADD) held its 35th Annual R. Brinkley Smithers Golf Invitational Monday and brought in more than $200,000 to support its life-saving substance abuse prevention programs and comprehensive addiction services.

More than 100 golfers teed-off at The Creek in Locust Valley where 200 dinner guests gathered in support of LICADD. “The support of our event chairs, Bill Baum, Michael Brennan and Jeffery Capazzi, and the generosity of our donors and volunteers at this event means so much to us, as the proceeds of the tournament will directly fund programs that provide hope and healing to at-risk individuals and the families that support them,” explained Executive Director Steve Chassman.

“It is because of their efforts that LICADD remains the go-to agency in the midst of this public health epidemic and continues to develop effective and innovative programs to combat addiction.”

Summer Pages Graduate The Suffolk County Legislature’s inaugural summer Page Program concluded August 7th with a graduation ceremony held in the Rose Y. Caracappa Auditorium of the W.H. Rogers Legislature Building in Hauppauge. Fifteen high school and college students completed the internship program.

“I am honored to congratulate these outstanding young people as they graduate from our Page Program,” said Suffolk County Legislature Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory.

“These students prove that millennials are anything but disengaged from public life. I’m impressed by both their enthusiasm

and professionalism, and I thank my fellow legislators for giving our Pages a substantive experience this summer.”

During the twomonth program, Pages drafted and debated mock legislation, staged mock press conferences and attended workshops on topics ranging from time management to cultural intelligence.

Additionally, they broke into caucuses and elected a Presiding Officer and Deputy Presiding Officer.

Pages were also assigned to legislative offices throughout the county, where they assisted staff with day-to-day operations, including constituent service.

“I’ve loved every minute

of the program and every person I’ve met along the way,” said Kristin Peragine of Baiting Hollow, who was assigned to the office of Clerk of the Legislature Tim Laube. “I never felt defeated or as though I couldn’t understand what was going on during a meeting. There was always a resource for me to rely on to help me further understand what was happening on a day-to-day basis at the Legislature.”

Migraine Facts And Treatment Tips (NAPSI)—While many people turn to prescription drugs to try to control migraines once they start, there aren’t any that are terribly effective and none that will stop the migraines before they happen. There is, however, another option and it doesn’t involve taking medication.

The Problem Almost 5 million people in the U.S. experience at least one migraine attack a month. More than 11 million people blame migraines for causing moderate to severe disability and 91 percent of them can’t function normally during migraine attack, according to the American Migraine Study, which also reveals that the average migraine sufferer misses two days of work per year.

It’s an expense both in terms of career—lost work—and medical costs.

Migraine sufferers use 2.5 times the amount of prescription drugs and have six times as many diagnostic tests and
