Every year, fifthgrade teacher Valerie Rivera invites her students to select and work on a form of handwork – including knitting, crocheting, rug hooking, braiding and sewing – for a block of time each day. It’s that time again.

Time to think about reading, writing, and arithmetic. But are you thinking about school lunches? If not, you might want to give it some thought. Lunch represents one third of the food consumed by students each day.

And today, one in three children and adolescents, ages 2-19 are overweight or obese.

Providing healthy options during lunchtime can set positive patterns and habits for a lifetime to come.

The American Heart Association offers tips and heart-healthy ideas for your student.

• Keep it simple.

Portable and presliced items are usually preferred by kids. Try sliced cucumbers, fruit slices such as apples or pears, and strive for a variety of colors

and textures to keep it interesting.

• Make it interesting.

Individual dips such as hummus, peanut butter (without added sugars and salt) are great with celery, sliced sweet peppers or whole grain crackers. Apples and pear slices with non-fat plain yogurt is a great heart-healthy option for a sweet tooth.

• Make a smarter sandwich. Use different breads like 100% whole grain breads, tortilla wraps and whole wheat pita pockets. They are more nourishing and are the better choice over white breads.

• Make it fun. When the kids are bored with their sandwiches, cutting them in to shapes is an easy way to make it interesting

This is 33 By: Jamie Lynn Ryan By the time you read this, I will have celebrated my 33rd birthday, as momentous an occasion as any, if you ask me.

Because, really, every year is a milestone in its own right, a small commemoration of our respective lives as they stand at a given moment in time. Sure, nice round numbers generate parties and extensive recognition; but who’s to say that one year is more significant than the last, or the ones yet to come?

As I write this, I am still two days away from officially marking the transition from 32 to 33, but in some ways, I feel like it’s already come and gone. Have you ever noticed that, when someone

asks your age, there is usually a subtle point in time when you’ve mentally moved on? Slightly over the halfway point, “I just turned 32” becomes “I’ll be 33,” and the years somehow meld together as one giant expanse of time.

What’s the rush?

In my case, anytime my age has occasion to be mentioned, it is usually met with incredulous looks and exclamations of, No way!

You’re lying… You can’t be older than 25, maybe. Well, that would be nice and all, but no – I’ve been a member of the 30+ club for a few years now, and I’m still not quite certain what makes that fact so unbelievable to outsiders.

Of course, so I’m told,

there will come a day – not too far down the line – where I will learn to greatly appreciate this misconception, and savor the countless times I am asked for I.D. (for scratchoff tickets and Rated-R movies, no less), but not today. Today, I am proud to be (almost) 33, and willing to embrace all that comes with this next year, this next milestone.

If we’ve learned anything, it’s that we cannot unwind the clock. Time passes, people come and go, and each day is truly a gift.

Neither dwelling on the past nor wishing for the future will change the present. And what a “present” it is.

Hampton Classic Set The Hampton Classic Horse Show, runnin from August 23rd through August 30th in Bridgehampton, will again feature exhibitions, games, activities and music geared toward children of all ages.

Family attractions will be featured throughout the week with expanded activity on Saturday, August 29th, as part of Optimum® Kids Day. Optimum® Kids Day features a myriad of unique, fun and educational offerings in the Classic’s Kids Area. Run for Autism Birch Family Services, a New York City non-profit organization is hosting its 3rd Annual 5K Race at the Hudson River Park on November 7th, at 12 p.m.

This event will benefit the 1,500 children and adults with autism and other developmental disabilities that Birch serves daily throughout NYC. The race will start and finish at Pier 64 at West 24th Street and the Hudson River. Registration is available at www. birchfamilyservices.org or at 12 p.m. on the day of the race. The tax-deductible registration fee is $31.50

for all participants.

Following the race awards presentation, all runners and supporters are invited to join the after party at Jake’s Saloon, 206 West 23rd Street.

The Birch 5k fun run will bring together the NYC community at-large to celebrate and support people with special needs.

Dog Days of Summer

There is still time but not much - to catch David Rosaire and his “One and Only Pekingese Dog Act Featuring Vanna the Baboon” at the Long Island Game Farm Wildlife Park & Children’s Zoo. This fine-tuned show of stimulating and eyecatching animal tricks and stunts is being presented daily on the Game Farm’s main stage at 12 noon and 3 p.m. until September 7th.

A fifth-generation member of the British circus family, The Rosaires, Mr. Rosaire began performing in circuses at the early age of five.

He has had an immense amount of training - from juggling and tumbling, to horsemanship. He took on the role of dog training in order to create his very own unique dog act. Today, Vanna and the Pekingese pups put on an elaborate show - full of jumps, slides and obeying outrageous commands, which many have dubbed as one of the world’s greatest dog acts of all time.

Legislator Tom Cilmi recently presented a proclamation to Adam August Rotbart for his recent accomplishments in Karate.

Adam, a student at Islip High School, competed at the USA National Karate Championship last month

and took the Gold Medal in Kumite (Japanese for “freestyle fighting”). As the National Kumite Champion, Adam will compete this month at the Pan American Karate Championships in Santa Cruz, Bolivia where he will represent the United States

on the USA Jr. National Team.

Adam has been doing Karate since the age of four; he is a second degree Black Belt and, all competitions combined, has earned more than twenty National titles.

Litter mars the beauty of a community and can negatively impact the environment.

Unfortunately, this all too common problem is even more serious when litter ends up in the Great South Bay, wetlands, streams and other areas of Islip’s local marine environment.

One way concerned citizens can help is to form a group, choose a waterway

and participate in the upcoming International Coastal Cleanup. Every year, Keep Islip Clean volunteers join people from around the world to pick up and also collect data on the litter and debris found by waterways. This project is a rare opportunity to remove sources of marine contamination and assist the Ocean Conservancy, which analyzes the data in

order to monitor pollution trends.

Long Beach International Film Festival On Friday, August 7th, the Long Beach International Film Festival took the concept of “Dinner and a Movie” to a whole new level, adding the spectacular “Taste on the Beach” event to their widely respected Shorts on the Beach series.

Beginning at 5 p.m. with a red carpet, over 4000 attendees (and a DRONE filming overhead!) reveled in the summer heat at what was billed as the biggest beach party of the summer; checking out the latest in independent short films and live musical performances while sampling the finest local food, wine & craft beers in an intimate theatre setting right on the beach.

Festival goers ended the evening with a fantastic rooftop after party at the nearby Alegria Hotel.

Celebrities in attendance included Former United States Senator (NY) Alfonse D’Amato and Former NY State Assemblyman Harvey Weisenberg from Long Beach who gave an award for community service to the Waterfront Warriors, Film Producer Scott Franklin (Noah), Academy Award Nominated Writer/ Director Bill Plympton, News 12 TV Personality

Then, when the sun went down around 8:45 p.m., visitors were thrilled by the 4th Annual “Shorts on the Beach”; (which was presented by Porsche of South Shore who had several of their hot new rides on display along the boardwalk) the LBIFF’s annual FREE, open to the public event. Among the many interesting titles that were featured included Director Brooke Wagstaff’s animated film and Award-winning Vimeo Staff Pick “Missing U”; an animated tale about the letter “I” and her perilous adventure in search of her missing “U”. As a Long Island highlight, Director Peter Frizalone’s HBO Project Greenlight Top 200 “Mommy” made its World Premiere begging the question “Do you know who is in your house?”

Other films shown included Director Chris Jordan-Bloch’s documentary on an evergrowing world issue “Dryden - The Small Town That Changed the Fracking Game” where the power of community takes on the power of fracking; Director/Producer

Stephanie Donnelly’s narrative/comedy “The Cannoli” where a Long Island family dinner turns tragic and a choice must be made between dessert and family; Director Sarah Menzies’ San Diego Surf Film Festival Best Short winning documentary “Catch It”, which follows Léa Brassy as her nomadic lifestyle takes a pause and she finds serenity in the Arctic surf of Northern Norway; and Croatian Director Antoneta Alamat Kusijanovi’s World Premiere of “Eye for an Eye”, in which child’s play turns into a showdown of imagination and discipline.

Long Beach International Film Festival Programmer Steve Shor recently said of the event, “The Shorts on the Beach program is a wonderful representation of what is in store for the Long Beach International Film Festival in September.

The program opened with the Oscar winning short Feast from Walt Disney Animation.

Additional animated shorts included Deep End by Oscar nominee Bill Plympton and Bear Story- a Chilean computer animated short (considered one of the best this year). In

the short documentary arena, we had Trust Design by Interior Design Magazine and Dryden

by EarthJustice. Finally, the program included some wonderful Narrative submissions from New York based directors and Universities”.

The Festival will celebrate its 4th anniversary this year from September 24th through 27th and will screen an international slate of films, including feature-length narrative, documentary, short and animated that will compete for a series of Jury, Festival Honors and Audience Awards. A new addition for 2015 LBIFF includes the Joan Jett Music Film Series. There will also be exhibiting films in the categories of Action Sports, Environmental, Art & Family.

Scholars in the Arts For the fifth year, talented Long Island music students have received a unique opportunity to study and perform at Usdan Center for the Creative and Performing Arts. The program was developed by Usdan Center in 2011 and supported with a charitable grant from Bethpage Federal Credit Union. The Usdan Center/Bethpage Scholars in the Arts program gives accomplished students, who otherwise couldn¹t attend Usdan, the opportunity to study at the country¹s largest not-for-profit summer arts day camp. The students were chosen for their fine musicianship and for their achievements as outstanding representatives of their communities.

Thirteen dogs, most of whom have been waiting six months or longer for their forever homes, walked the red carpet on Saturday, including Jackson, a Lab/Pit Bull mix, who received the 2015 Shelter Dog of the Year award. Jackson has been at the shelter just shy of one full year. He is referred to as the “shelter superstar” because of his ability to get along with everyone he meets – dogs, cats, and

kids included. This award, an oversized dog biscuit, was presented to Jackson

by New York State Senator Phil Boyle.

This year, the Commack Road enjoyed workshops that explored folk dance, boomwhackers percussion tubes, ukulele, recorder, chorus, singing games and musical theater.

The Islip Animal Shelter and Adopt-a-Pet Center hosted their annual Shelter’s Choice Awards fundraiser, sponsored by Live.Love.Bark Dog Rescue, where the adoptable dogs of the shelter walked the doggie red carpet and receive awards in various categories, such as “Sloppiest Kisser,” “Best cuddler” and “Fan Favorite.”

This event offered free adoptions to approved applicants, $25.00 micro-chipping, vendors, food for purchase, a DJ, photobooth, merchandise and raffles.

The shelter staff was able to microchip ten dogs, raising $250.00 for the shelter animals. An additional $1050.00 was raised in donations by Live.Love.Bark.

Three applications for dog adoptions were filed and are currently pending.

Heart Walk Ambassador The American Heart Association is proud to have Gabriella Lisboa serving as the 2015 Long Island Heart Walk “Red Cape” Ambassador. This year’s Long Island Heart Walk will be taking place on Sunday, September 20th, at Jones Beach.

Gabriella was just 6 months old when she was diagnosed with DCRV (Double Chamber of Right Ventricle) and had to have two open heart surgeries when she was nine months old.

Today, she is a happy and healthy and has made it her mission to raise money and awareness for the American Heart Association so that they can do more research and educate others so that there are more survivors like her.

At the Heart Walk, survivors are celebrated.

A “Red Cap” is a red baseball cap featuring the American Heart Association logo. “Red Caps” refer to survivors

of heart attack, cardiac arrest or heart surgery who wear the red caps as a symbol of their survival while walking in the Heart Walk. “White Caps” will be distributed to stroke survivors the day of the walk. Pediatric cardiovascular disease survivors will receive red super hero capes to acknowledge their courage.

Hundreds of survivors from across Long Island participate to show that heart disease and stroke can be beaten.

The American Heart Association estimates there are more than 71 million Americans alive with one or more types of cardiovascular disease.

As Red Cape Ambassador for the Long Island Heart Walk, Gabriella will help create awareness about the importance of survivors participating in the event and to create awareness that heart disease and stroke aren’t “just an

older man’s diseases.”

On Sunday, September 20th, join our “Red Cape” Ambassador and thousands of other survivors, families and friends from all over Long Island at the Long Island Heart Walk at Jones Beach, Field 5.
