Suffolk County residents got a boost in paying for childcare. Beginning August 1, 2022, as part of the 202223 New York State budget, families earning up to 300 percent of the federal poverty level will qualify for assistance. Previously, the income standard set by the State for childcare subsidies was 200 percent. Assistance will be administered locally by the Suffolk and Nassau counties departments of Social Services. “A strong childcare system helps buttress a strong economy,” said Adrian Fassett, C.E.O. of the Economic Opportunity Council of Suffolk, Inc., a Patchogue-based not-forprofit that own and operates Way to Grow Child Care Learning Center in East Patchogue. “The reality is that working people can’t get to their jobs if they don’t have a quality, safe place to send their children. More workers are returning to an office setting following more than two years of working from home and we need to do all we can to ensure they have access to excellent childcare.”According to the Governor’s office, thousands of families will now be eligible for childcare subsidies as part of a $7 billion expansion of childcare funding in New York State. “I know firsthand how a lack of childcare can hurt your career, your family and your future, as a working mother when I was forced to leave my job to care for my child,” Governor Hochul said. “These historic investments in New York State’s childcare system will allow us to forge a new path forward for parents, especially mothers. It is the right thing to do, the moral thing to do, and will supercharge our economic recovery and support working families. Childcare is an essential service, and in New York, we will continue to do everything in our power to make sure more working families have access to Parentsit.” can be eligible if they are employed and earn no more than the 300 percent threshold, are enrolled in an education or training program, in mental health or substance abuse treatment, or are in an emergency situation of short duration. For example, a family of four can earn up to $83,250 annually and still be eligible for subsidized childcare.Tofind out if you are eligible under these new guidelines, please contact your local county Department of Social Services: Suffolk (631) 8543349, Nassau (516) 2278519. Families seeking childcare in the Greater Patchogue area can directly call Way to Grow Childcare/ Learning Center at (631) 475-7239. About the OpportunityEconomicCouncilofSuffolk,Inc. Be cautious when using these services, as you can easily get in over your head. You’ll likely spend more. There’s a reason retailers aggressively promote BNPL: People tend to spend more using these services. A LendingTree survey found two-thirds of shoppers spent more using BNPL plans than they would have otherwise. Before completing that latest purchase, check your budget and bank account. Be sure you can really afford what you’re buying instead of putting yourself at risk of falling into debt. Inconsistent credit score impacts. Most BNPL providers don’t report on-time payment data to the major credit bureaus, meaning you receive none of the upsides of responsible repayment. However, negative events like missed payments or collections activity, are likely to be reported. This makes it even more critical to make your BNPL payments on time and avoid missing any. No consumer protections. Because of BNPL’s standard fourinstallment payment plans, these services fall outside the purview of the Truth in Lending Act. Translation: Consumers have no protection from any potential predatory or deceptive lending practices with BNPL providers. Federal law requires five installments before triggering any regulations. The new CSI 5* status means an increase in prize money to more than $1 million, with $410,000 for the Classic’s featured Hampton Classic Grand Prix on Sunday, September 4. New all-weather footing in the Grand Prix Ring will allow for an expanded schedule featuring the 5* and 2* as well as some new divisions.“Weare truly excited about hosting a CSI 5* and having the opportunity to expand our schedule,” said Shanette Barth Cohen, the Classic’s Executive Director. “Our new allweather footing enables us to hold more classes in the Grand Prix Ring and our move to 5* status is sure to attract the best horses and riders from all across the country and beyond.” The Hampton Classic will host a live discussion on Clubhouse to discuss the new schedule and footing on Thursday, March 10 at 6:00 p.m. All are invited to participate. The footing is being installed by Travis Gould and his JTWG, Inc. It is engineered using the same state-of-the-art processes that were used for the new footing in the International Arena at the Palm Beach International Equestrian Center in Wellington, Florida and Tryon Stadium in Tryon, North Carolina, both of which have received rave reviews. The laboratory design and modeling of the footing for those “UltraCompetition” arenas was done by Bill Hawe, CEO of iEquiTek, LLC, who is overseeing the project for the Hampton Classic. The state-of-the-art processes being employed for the Hampton Classic by this team will also be used for the 2023 Longines FEI Jumping World CupTM Finals in Omaha. “I think this is fantastic news,” said seven-time Hampton Classic Grand Prix champion McLain Ward. “The Hampton Classic has always been one of our sport’s premier events, equal to any Five Star. Now with official Five Star status plus its new footing that has proven at Wellington to be as good as there is, the Hampton Classic will solidify its position as one of the most outstanding events in the artadvancingitsissaid,performance.stillbeCSIinofmake5*speedstheimproveformulaeincoupledlabridingmostarenasworld.”Ultra-Competitionareanexampleoftheextremelyfine-tunedsurfaces. Utilizingmeasurements,withcomparisonstheiEquiTekdatabase,aredevelopedtocertainaspectsofpeakperformance.TheandheightsofCSIcompetitionsingeneralforanarrowaperturewhatisacceptable,eventhebestofconditions.5*competitionsmayheldintherain,yetdemand5*levelsofBillHawe,fromiEquiTek“TheHamptonClassictobecommendedforall-incommitmenttothestate-of-the-forperformance,safety and horse welfare. Longines is the Official Timekeeper for the Hampton Classic which will also be adding new divisions such as Low Adult and Children’s Jumpers, Low Adult and Children’s Hunters and 3’6” High Performance Hunters. This will allow some exhibitors who have never previously had the chance to ride at the Hampton Classic to do so. More details on this year’s schedule will be forthcoming soon. Demand For Qualified, Talented Nurses To Grow In The Years To Come

The demand for qualified, talented nurses figures to grow in the years to come. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, more than half a million nurses are expected to retire by 2022. Couple that with an existing nursing shortage, and the BLS projects a need for 1.1 million registered nurses in the near future. A shortage also figures to affect Canada, where the Canadian Nurses Association recently estimated that the country would be forced to confront a nursing shortage of roughly 60,000 nurses by 2022. Various factors are contributing to the nursing shortage in both countries, including an increasingly large aging population that will require more and more nurses to meet its health care needs. In the United States, the Affordable Care Act, which was passed in 2010, increased access to health care for millions of people across the country, thereby creating a greater need for nurses and other health care professionals. In addition, a greater emphasis on preventive care in many countries across the globe figures to compel more people to visit their physicians even when they’re otherwise feeling healthy. As more people prioritize preventive care, the need for more nurses will likely increase.

We were looking for works inspired by life… works that conjured narratives…that took us to places we had never seen… or introduced us to people and places. Artists build their work through inspiration, references, sketches, models, underpaintings and other modes of planning. An artist’s Little Black Book is often a secret stash of intimate expressions, innermost thoughts, and experimental techniques that lay the groundwork for their final piece. Entrants were required to submit writeups digital images, sketches, etc. that showed the evolution of each piece they entered into the show. About the juror: Carol Fabricatore is an artist in the New York City area who is a great observer of all things and likes to approach creating narrative imagery beginning with an emotional connection to an idea. She often gravitates towards subject matter that might be seen in one’s peripheral vision or passed by on the way to something in the mainstream. Brianna McGowan Creates wMental Health Resource Flyer

Wildwood State Park Fall Festival

Following recent school tragedies such as Uvalde, Islip High School freshman Brianna McGowan decided to do something positive to help her peers. McGowan and her school counselor Nicole Hall developed the idea of creating a flyer for students that included mental health resources available at the school, on Long Island, and via New York and national hotlines. McGowan also researched social media and included inspiring Instagram accounts and mental health apps. Teachers shared the flyer in their classrooms, and students could also find it on the school’s gradelevel Teams pages. “Because of the Texas shooting, I felt upset and wanted to make something so that students know that there’s a solution to problems and that not all solutions are violent, and so they know that good people are there if they need help,” McGowan said.” “We were trying to think of a way to help, whether in a big way or something small,” Hall said. “There’s a lot of scary news and negativity that’s in our face, so we also included positive news and mental health apps to make it very tangible for other high school students. I think that a future career in helping people in some capacity might be something Brianna could look into. She has a very big heart and that is evident in what she did with this project.” “As we all were faced yet again with navigating the darkness and tragedy of the events in Uvalde, the passion of a student to be proactive and to make a difference within her school community shined through,” said outgoing Principal Jon LaRochester. “I cannot tell you how impressed I was to learn of Brianna’s willingness to engage and support her schoolmates as thoughtfully and compassionately as she planned. Being as young as she is, it made it even more impressive. It is essential for us as educators to cultivate and support the natural leadership that students like Brianna display. These are the types of young men and women who will change the world, and it’s our job to help them learn how to do so.”

After a few years of inactivity, East Islip High School’s school newspaper, “The Broadcaster,” returned in 2022 in the form of a IslipfirstwasThecoordinatethejournalism,designedatheHearth,andAugelloEnglishEIBroadcaster.com.website,LedbyteacherMichaelandrisingseniorEditor-In-ChiefTristanthestaffusedSNOSites,platformbranchofWordPressforstudenttoresurrectpublicationandtheirefforts.initialrunofarticlespublishedinJune.“OneofmygoalsformyyearofteachinginEastwastogetinvolved right away in as many ways as possible,” Augello said. “During the interview process, administration mentioned that there was a group of students who were hungry to bring back the newspaper, and they hoped the candidate they hired might be interested in leading the charge. I felt this was the perfect opportunity for me: In high school, I was the editor of my school newspaper and wrote for a local high school football website. In college, before studying education, I studied journalism, and before coming to East Islip, I helped to reshape a digital media/broadcasting course to center more around digital storytelling. It was so much fun to start recruiting a staff, teaching about journalism, and hearing the stories that are out there. We decided to make the switch and go digital to adapt to the way people consume their media today and to expand the way we can tell our stories.”“Itis impossible to know what the future of the paper holds, but I am happy to have helped it get started, and I cannot wait for whatever comes next,” Hearth said.

Connecting Military Parents And Children, One Story At A Time (StatePoint) For deployed service members who are also parents, being away from their kids is often the hardest part of the job. This is why the United Service Organizations (USO) has prioritized connecting military parents with their families. One way to bring service members a reminder of home is through USO entertainment tours, the most famous tour veteran, of course, being legendary comedian Bob Hope. Hope’s legacy of service lives on today through the Bob Hope Legacy Reading Program. Bringing story time ondemand around the globe, the program connected more than 39,000 military families around the world through reading in 2019 alone. Service members visit participating USO locations, record themselves reading their child’s favorite story and the USO ships that recording and book home to lovedLikewise, ones. military kids can record themselves reading a book and share the story time memories with their parents serving overseas. Additionally, local USO reading events encourage kids to use their creativity and complete a craft that complements a story’s theme. When the COVID-19 pandemic hit and many locations had to temporarily shut their doors, this did not deter USO volunteers and staff from finding innovative ways to continue their efforts safely. USO Erbil in Iraq put their ingenuity to work and outfitted the back of a pickup truck with a makeshift trifold to serve as a reading “room.” They then decorated the inside of the room and packed up a box of books, some props and a chair. The USO team drove the truck all around base, stopping outside popular locations as well as remote areas to reach as many service members as possible with their new, unofficial “Bob Hope on the Road” reading room. The informal celebration highlighted the endeavors, adventures and accolades the students have experienced since they began the program in fourth grade. EXCEL Coordinator Julia Johnson spoke about the varying disciplines studied in the EXCEL room, such as flying drones, writing poetry, debating philosophy, creating documentaries, and exploring global citizenship and neuroscience.“What’sawesome is that I got to watch the growth of your children throughout this,” Johnson told the parents. “I’ve watched them grow as writers, watched them engage in all these hands-on opportunities to figure out who they are as individuals, how they work with others, and slowly they are becoming themselves. We know that this is only the beginning, so tonight is our chance to honor them on that journey. It has truly been my honor to guide them through this experience of self-discovery, of selfcreation, of emergence, and to witness them connect to the highest versions of themselves right now.”

For the 11 Islip Middle School eighth graders in the district’s EXCEL gifted and talented program, an era in their educational journey ended as they received certificates of completion at the program’s first Eclosion Celebration. Students Connor Ancipink, William Cheung, Kieran Freelin, Fiona Hamilton, Richie Lin, Nelysa Petersen, Wesley Plotke, Eve Schnatz, Aisha Shrivardhankar, Vincent Tyre and Jadyn Zink were officially recognized as program graduates in front of their proud parents during the event.
