features on the surface and the limb, or edge, of the Sun,” he said. “This telescope allows us to see prominences, flares, super granulation, filaments, and active regions.”

Bush explained that hydrogen-alpha light is emitted by the hydrogen atoms that make up the majority of the Sun’s composition.

When electrons within the hydrogen atoms absorb energy and rise to a higher energy level then fall back to their original orbits, light is emitted at a particular wavelength that can be seen with the specialized telescope.”

“Typically, telescopic views of objects in outer space rarely change before our eyes in real-time,” Bush said. “However, on a day when the Sun is

particularly active we can watch features on the Sun evolve before our eyes while looking through an H-alpha telescope!

“The sun is dynamic and alive. It changes daily, and rotates.”

Bush explained the solar features in the picture at left, shot by photographer Alan Friedman.: The wisps of white curling off the upper left curve of the Sun are prominences, or arcs of gas that erupt from the surface. Sometimes the loops extend thousands of miles into space.

The lighter spots and streaks are called plages, the French word for beaches, and are, appropriately hot spots or bright emissions caused by emerging flux regions associated with the magnetic field of the Sun.

The tiny hair-like lines that extend from the surface are spicules. These are jets of hot gas that can rise up to 6,000 miles high.

Most last only 15 minutes before morphing into new spicules.

The dark spots are sun spots, which are cooler areas of the surface caused by the suppression of convection cells due to the Sun’s strong magnetic field.

The Sun is 93 million miles from Earth, and its size is almost beyond human comprehension – 1.3 million Earths could fit inside the Sun. The solar telescope is available for viewing on a limited schedule, on clear days. (The Sun is not observable on cloudy or rainy days.)

The Planetarium has just installed a Lunt Solar Systems hydrogen-alpha solar telescope in the Observatory – for daytime observation of the Sun. Dave Bush, the Planetarium’s technical and production coordinator, and an astronomy educator, said the solar telescope is mounted “piggy back” onto the 16-inch Meade reflecting telescope in order to track the Sun across the sky.

To all those fellow concertgoers, I have a question: why are you attending these shows?

Because, by all indications, it is not to sit back and actually listen to the music being played before you.

At first, I thought it may have been an isolated case; but the last several performances I have attended have only served to solidify my perception that no one is paying attention.

Mind you, I’m not referring to the popular free summer concert series that pop up all over the area, the ones that encourage you to bring your own seating and refreshments and enjoy a picnic-like atmosphere with your family and friends. I’m talking about

the amphitheater-style shows that you most likely paid pretty good money to see.

First off, I understand that the scheduled opening acts may not be the main attraction, but still – it would be nice to throw a little support behind today’s up-and-coming artists. Who knows what they may go on to achieve in a few years. Secondly, once the headliner hits the stage, why would you feel the need to spend the better part of their performance taking selfies, scrolling through Instagram, Snapchat, Facebook… oh, and let’s not forget the art of chasing Pokémon.

You are here. You don’t need to inform every single one of your friends of that fact. Just sit back and enjoy it. Appreciate the talent before you. Sure,

you may want to snap a photo or two, maybe record a short video of your favorite number; but, beyond that, I don’t understand the need to be preoccupied by everything other than that entertainment which you paid to see.

Whatever happened to the days of lighters in the air and hands clapping along, of singing the chorus in unison with 15,000 of your closest friends and being present in the moment? I’m pretty sure that, even with all of today’s technological advances, the basic concept of appreciating your surroundings has not gone out of style. Perhaps we should all make an effort to get back in touch with this principle.

Huntington Learning Center has teamed up with the Coalition for the Homeless for its annual drive for homeless students, called Project: Back to School. This program collects school supplies and distributes more than 3,000 new backpacks filled with pens, pencils, notebooks and other items for homeless students in grades kindergarten through 12th grade.

Established in 1981, the Coalition for the Homeless is the nation’s oldest advocacy and direct

service organization helping homeless men, women and children.

The Coalition helps more than 3,500 homeless New Yorkers each day living in extreme poverty, offering a variety of programs that address immediate needs and help men, women and families overcome long-term barriers to employment and stability.

For the month of August, Huntington is collecting school supplies at its centers in the Bronx, Brooklyn (Park Slope and Bay Ridge), Queens (Flushing), Upper West

LI Poets Honored Long Island poets will be honored at the Ethical Humanist Society of LI from September through June. Each Sunday at the Ethical Society’s Sunday morning meeting a poem that was written by a poet who had a connection with Long Island will be read as part of the regular lecture at 11 a.m.

Says Ethical Society president Linda Napoli of Mineola, “We want our members and attendees to have a rich experience on Sunday morning, so in addition to a talk on a topic of ethical concerns, we feature music and poetry.”

Generally the Sunday morning poems draw from the vast world of poetry but this year the focus will be on Long Island. “Of course, we’ll lead off with Walt Whitman,” says Lyn Dobrin

of Westbury who with her husband, Arthur Dobrin, poet and leader emeritus of the Ethical Society, selected the poems.

Dobrin says that in reviewing the potential poems she was delighted to find such rich material.

“I guess Whitman is in the Long Island DNA,” she says.

Some of the poems selected include David Axelrod’s “Random Beauty,” Margaret Garry Burke’s “Sunflowers,” Stanley Barkan’s “Crossings,” and “In that twilight before sleep,”

by Barbara Novack. “We generally try to match the poem with the theme of the speaker or with events of the time,” says Dobrin, “so around Veterans Day we are considering Tammy Nuzzo-Morgan’s ‘Poem #1-

Not all the poems will be serious. For some humor Joan Digby’s “Waking the Students,” will be featured around the time college students are taking their final exams and most can relate to Tony Iovino’s “Where & When?,” a lament about overeating.

“What makes that poem of just four short stanzas so interesting is how Iovino moves from humor to musings about the passage of time and aging,” says Dobrin.

BRENTWOOD’S NIGHT OUT - Northwell Health’s sponsorship of Brentwood’s first National Night Out and its donation of food helped to make the afternoon and evening a success. National Night Out is an event that promotes people in the community, including local businesses, houses of worship and police, getting to know each other. Southside Hospital donated turkey burgers, apple slices and other food items to the event in addition to having a table with health information available for patrons.

As a part of this science and art integration project supporting STEAM education, Dana Belfiore-O’Connell led the students in studying the various species and their anatomical parts. Using

observation skills, students created butterfly artworks, each with a head, thorax and abdomen, as well as traditional markings and unique wing shapes found in the various species.

The Long Island Association of Special Education Administrators recently honored recent Islip High School graduate Michael Bradford with the Conrad G. Hecht Memorial Award, earning him $500 for his achievements.

LIASEA established the Conrad G. Hecht Memorial Award to recognize Nassau and Suffolk students who have been in a special education program for 60 percent or more of the school day, qualified for the NYSAA, successfully met goals on their IEP, and demonstrated good citizenship, involvement in extracurricular activities

and community service.

Bradford was recognized at LIASEA’s annual awards luncheon, held on June 10th at the Crest Hollow Country Club in Woodbury.

Also in attendance were his parents, Islip Executive Director of Pupil Personnel Services/Special Education Kate O’Callaghan, special education teacher Linda Colucciello, teacher assistant teacher Pete Blumenauer and speech pathologist Jessica Schulman.

Bradford graduated from Project SEARCH in June, earning a Skills and Achievement Commencement

Credential, and he is currently employed at the Best Market supermarket in Islip.

Project SEARCH, housed at the Medford Multicare Center in Medford, is an internationally recognized transition program for students with disabilities, acclaimed for its unique method of total immersion of students in the workplace. The full-day program, which is part of the ESBOCES Islip Career Center, allows students like Bradford to have the opportunity to learn employability skills on-site at their internship program.

Mission United United Way of Long Island has been named an official charity partner of the 2016 TCS New York City Marathon. With nine participants, including Billy Richards of Islip, ready to take on the enduring 26.2-mile race, Team Mission United was born.

Team Mission United is a dedicated group of premier runners who will be running for the 135,000 veterans and military families on Long Island. Long Island has New York State’s largest veteran’s population and one of the highest concentration of veterans in the United States. The Mission United program focuses on employment

services, education, financial services, health and housing support.

Billy Richards, a personal trainer and U.S. Army and Marine veteran from Islip, is eager to participate as a member of Team Mission United. Richards stated about partaking in this marathon, “The intensity I see displayed by the Mission United program in helping active military and returning vets prosper compliments my philosophy of focus and caring.”

When it comes to running competitively, Billy Richards is no rookie.

He has an extensive resume, including 10 marathons, 4 ultra-marathons, 10 Tough Mudder races,

Spartan races and was on the winning 48 hour Death Race team for ultraathletes.

As if competing in these difficult races was not impressive enough, Richards also competes with a 45 pound military pack while carrying an American flag. As a former Marine who enlisted in the military twice, Richards is a huge supporter of veteran’s causes and focuses on bringing awareness to veterans who have PTSD. Richards is also a member of the Airborne Tri Team, which is a group of LI veterans who also run with packs and American flags.

When Richards was asked to join the 2016 TCS NYC Marathon for team Mission

United, he immediately agreed. “I have a sincere dedication to my running and support of fellow vets,” stated Richards, who is excited to be running the NYC Marathon to further enhance veteran’s services through Mission United programs.

“Billy is one of the most competitive and dedicated athletes I’ve ever met,” commented Nick Auletta,

Co-Chair of Mission United and United Way of Long Island Board Member.

“Team Mission United is lucky to have him run on our behalf.”

Although Richards does not seem to need any luck in completing the marathon in November, his supporters and fans will certainly be there to cheer him on when he crosses the finish line, pack and

American flag in hand.

Grant Workshops Available The Huntington Arts Council continues to manage the New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA) Decentralization grant program.

The schedule and registration for Free mandatory workshops is available now.

Through the Decentralization grant program (DEC), nonprofit organizations, individual artists and teaching artists may apply annually for grants to help strengthen the arts and cultural programs in their communities. It is the intention of New York State Council on the Arts that these funds, regranted through Decentralization, provide developmental support to those organizations exhibiting quality programming, community support and professionalism.

In Suffolk and Nassau counties, Long Island Decentralization is administered by the Huntington Arts Council (HAC).

Grants range from $500-$5,000 dollars.

The three categories of available grants are: • Creative IndividualArtist Projects • Creative LearningTeaching Artist

They look great, they’re durable, but they can also cost thousands of dollars.

Granite requires special care and attention because it’s a natural stone. Here are a few tips to help you protect your investment: • Seal your countertops: According to the Marble Institute of America, an industry group, granite countertops should be sealed so that the stone is more resistant to dirt and spills. Check with the manufacturer or retailer about the best kind of sealer to use on food preparation areas.

• Be careful what

you clean with: Never use ammonia—based products-or cleaners containing vinegar, lemon or orange—on your granite countertops. Avoid abrasive cleaners such as dry or soft cleansers.
