Meet Guy. He’s a local business owner, former rock bassist, and current fan of LEDs. It didn’t hurt that he got $5,900 in rebates to replace his store’s old lighting with energy-efficient fixtures.* He says his store and his guitars look great in the new LED glow. And, with the monthly energy cost savings, he couldn’t be happier. How can we help your small business save?

New York State Senator Steve Rhoads Hosts Successful Senate Farm Day Of Action In Partnership With Island Harvest
On Monday, July 31, Senator Rhoads hosted the inaugural Senate Farm Day of Action where he invited his fellow Long Island Senators to join him and Island Harvest in planting seeds, harvesting crops, and packing fresh produce at Island Harvest’s Healthy Harvest Farm in Brentwood. Island Harvest is one of Long Island’s leading hunger relief organizations and their farm helps them deliver on their mission to end hunger and reduce food waste on Long Island. At the farm, senators, their staff, and volunteers were able to gain first-hand experience from Long Island farmers about all the work that goes into operating a fresh food bank garden. The group planted string beans and squash and harvested swiss chard and fennel to be sent to local food banks. The
Senate Farm Day of Action highlighted the importance of local food banks and the valuable services that they provide for people in need. Studies show that 272,000 Long Islanders experience hunger and food insecurity - that is one in every nine Long Islanders. In addition, 89,000 of Long Islanders that are food insecure are children. Hunger and access to healthy foods is a major issue on Long Island. With Senator Rhoads’ leadership in spearheading events like the Senate Farm Day of Action, it reminds Long Islanders of the rich agricultural history of Long Island, creates more awareness about hunger relief organizations on Long Island, and supports their efforts to help combat food insecurity.
State Senator Steve Rhoads (District 5) said, “It was an honor to spearhead the inaugural
New York State Senate Farm Day of Action on Long Island. It truly was

a fun, educational, and rewarding experience for everyone involved. I was happy to roll up my sleeves with Senator Dean Murray and my interns to play an active role in fighting hunger on Long Island. Special thank you to Randi Shubin Dresner and her unbelievably welcoming Island Harvest team for helping us plant seeds, harvest crops, and learn about sustainable farming practices. Island Harvest does an incredible job educating our community about healthy eating habits as well as providing fresh produce to local families in need on Long Island. Our Senate Farm Day of Action was a great success and a hands-on way to get involved in the local community and help make a difference.
“It was an absolute pleasure to join my colleague, NYS Senator Steve Rhoads, members of his staff and Randi Shubin Dresner and her team from Island Harvest, as we did some planting and harvesting of food that will be shared with those in need all across Long
Island. Island Harvest does a tremendous job of making sure they are providing families with healthy food as well as teaching them the importance of eating healthy and nutritious meals. The part about this experience is that it doesn’t get any healthier than growing your own food,” said State Senator Dean Murray (District 3).
“We are grateful to Senator Rhoads for his efforts in helping bring to light the importance of
providing fresh produce and the nutritional value it brings to people who are food insecure,” said Randi Shubin Dresner, president & CEO, Island Harvest Food Bank. “Along with Senator Murray, they helped plant squash and harvested tomatoes, Swiss chard, and fennel, and we are grateful for their continue support, working together to find creative solutions to the ongoing and chronic issue of hunger on Long Island and across New York state.”

WWII Veteran Warren James Turns 100
Town Councilman
John C. Cochrane, Jr., retired US Navy Captain and Chairman of Islip Town Veterans’ Advisory Board, recently met with our Town’s newest centenarian, World War II Veteran, Warren James, to congratulate him on his milestone 100th birthday.
Born in 1923, Warren enlisted to serve in the United States Coast Guard in December of 1941, and would serve on the USS Mistletoe (WAGL237) coastal buoy tender stationed in the Hampton Roads area. After receiving transfer to the USS Eugene (PF-40) Tacoma class frigate, he entered the Pacific Theater aboard the
ship that would later earn two World War II battle stars.
While transporting wounded from the battle of the Philippines, the USS Eugene caught fire, but was saved along with its occupants by the dedicated efforts of the crew in which Warren served. Transferred once more to the USS Lansing (DE-388), he would continue to serve with dedication through to the remainder of World War II.
“Warren James belongs to that special group in our Nation’s history,” said Islip Councilman John C. Cochrane Jr. “Part of the greatest generation, his efforts during the
Bay Shore-Brightwaters Public Library
War contributed to the protection of the Pacific that helped save lives and enable the U.S. and Allied Forces to emerge victorious. We wish him nothing but peace and happiness on this milestone birthday achievement,” the councilman added.
After the war, Mr. James returned to Long Island and worked for the Fair Harbor Ferry Company, serving as a dock hand and captain. His love for the ocean led him to move to Lonelyville on Fire Island, where he would further serve his community as both Water Commissioner and Fire Commissioner.
Happy Birthday, Warren James!

Islip Town Board Recognizes Hero Firefighter, Medal Of Valor Recipient
Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter and the Islip Town Board recently congratulated Islip resident Lt. Justin Hespeler of the FDNY, for in May receiving the Public Safety Officer Medal of Valor from President Biden.
While responding to a call in November of 2021, Lt. Hespeler was made aware of a newborn trapped on the second floor of a burning Brooklyn home. Without the protection of a hoseline, and ignoring
urgent calls for personnel to evacuate the building, Lt. Hespeler battled through heavy black smoke, zero visibility and high heat, to locate the unconscious 5-week-old and carry him to safety, where EMS administered life-saving aid.
“Lt. Hespeler’s heroic deeds are truly remarkable and stand as a testament to the selfless courage of first responders,” said Islip Supervisor Angie Carpenter. “This type of
heroism is inspiring, and we are proud as a Town to call him one of our own.” the Supervisor added.
The Public Safety Officer Medal of Valor is the highest national award presented to a public safety officer who has exhibited extraordinary valor above and beyond the call of duty.

PSEG Long Island Reminds Customers To Enjoy Summer Safely
PSEG Long Island reminds customers to keep safety at the forefront as they use electricity to make the most of the season.
“Most of us love to be outside when the weather is warm and the days are long, and many of us utilize electricity to transform our outdoor spaces for the season,” said Michael Sullivan, PSEG Long Island’s vice president of Transmission and Distribution. “Whether you are using electric lawn equipment, hooking up a sound system for a garden party, or even inflating a bounce house or kids’ swimming pool, it’s important to follow best practices to ensure everyone stays safe.”
PSEG Long Island recommends customers:
· Check that extension cords are correctly rated for the amount of electricity they are to carry and are Underwriter Laboratory (UL) approved.
· Check all electric cords for visible damage. Cracked or frayed cords can be dangerous. Never use power equipment on wet hedges, grass, shrubs, or in any areas that are damp.
Make sure their work and garden power tools are protected with threepronged grounding plugs, unless they are double insulated.
Contact their town or village hall to confirm that their pool plans meet all
local zoning and safety requirements.
Check that no electric devices are so close to the swimming pool that they could accidentally fall into the water.
Ensure that all outdoor outlets have waterproof covers. Outlets that have moisture in them may create a shock hazard.
Keep all ladders far away from electric lines.
To help customers make the most of their summer without breaking the bank, PSEG Long Island offers rebates on smart thermostats, heat pump pool heaters and more. To learn more, visit https://www.psegliny.com/ saveenergyandmoney/ energystarrebates.

It’s never too soon to practice healthy aging; the things we do to keep body and heart healthy— nutritious diet, physical activity, and social connections – also can help promote brain health and wellness. To help individuals be proactive about protecting their brain health, the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America (AFA) is providing these 10 steps for successful aging.
“Lifestyle choices play a vital role in healthy aging and brain health, and it’s never too soon to start,” said Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr., AFA’s President & CEO. “Eating right, exercising the body and mind, getting proper sleep, and being socially active all contribute to healthy aging and good

brain health, and can potentially reduce the risk of developing a dementiarelated illness.”
AFA offers the following 10 steps for healthy aging:
Eat Well-Adopt a lowfat diet high on fruits and veggies, like strawberries, blueberries, and broccoli. Take daily vitamins. Limit intake of red meats, fried and processed foods, salt, and sugar. In general, foods that are “heart healthy” are also “brain healthy.”
Stay Active-Physical activity increases blood flow to the brain and can also help improve mood and overall wellbeing.
Brisk walking benefits brain health, while aerobics can boost your heart rate, and weight training builds strength
and flexibility.
Learn New ThingsChallenge your brain by starting a new hobby like playing tennis, learning to speak a foreign language, trying a cooking class, or something you have not done before. Even something as simple as brushing your teeth with your non-dominant hand stimulates the brain by forcing it to think outside of its normal routine.
Get Enough SleepGetting a consistent sleep every night is key; at least seven to nine hours is ideal. Having a good sleep environment is also helpful. Insomnia or sleep apnea can have serious physical effects and negatively affect memory and thinking.
Mind Your MedsMedication can affect
everyone differently, especially as you age. When getting a new medication or something you have not taken in a while (whether over the counter or prescription), talk to your doctor or local pharmacist.
Stop Smoking and Limit Alcohol-Smoking can increase the risk of other serious illnesses, while too much alcohol can impair judgment and cause accidents, including falls, broken bones, and car crashes.
Stay ConnectedSocial interaction and maintaining an active social life are very important for brain health, cognitive stimulation and mood. Invite friends and family over for a meal, board games, or just to hang out. Engaging in
your community and participating in group activities is also beneficial.
Know Your Blood Pressure-Blood pressure can impact your cognitive functioning. Visit your physician regularly to check your blood pressure and make sure it is in normal range.
See Your DoctorMaintain checkups. Health screenings are key to managing chronic illnesses, such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and obesity, all of which can impact brain health. Speak with your physician about any concerns or questions you have about your health.
Get a Memory Screening-Our brains need regular checkups, just as other parts of our bodies do. Memory
screenings are quick, noninvasive exams for our brains. AFA offers free virtual memory screenings every weekday—visit www. alzfdn.org or call AFA at 866-232-8484 to learn more about getting a free virtual memory screening. You can also talk to your doctor about getting a screening as part of your annual wellness exam.
Individuals who would like to learn more about healthy aging, brain health, or memory screenings can contact the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America’s Helpline by phone (866232-8484), web chat (www.alzfdn.org), or text message (646-586-5283) seven days a week, or visit www.alzfdn.org.
