STUDENTS TREAT BUS DRIVERS TO SOMETHING SWEET - To finish off the recent school year at Islip’s Commack Road Elementary School, fourth graders in Catherine Nieves’ class at Commack Road prepared root beer floats for their bus drivers. Joined by Principal James Cameron, the students presented the sweet treats to the drivers to thank them for getting the students to and from school safely.

Recently a 4-week session hosted by The Social Brain and Peconic Speech Services in Riverhead started to help survivors learn social skills, build friendships, find cues from others and interact with peers. The first session was on August 6th and the following 2 sessions will be on August 20th and 27th.

Age groups are broken down from ages 5-7, 8-12, teens and adults. If you are still interested in attending any of these events, please email thesocialbrainny@ gmail.com or call 631.793.4311 for more information.

Additionally, in only two days (on August 16th), The Social Brain will host a “Basket Night Fundraiser” at the Sound Beach Property Owners Association at 6:30PM! This will be fun night with 250 plus baskets and prizes being raffled off; top raffles include brand new bicycles from Walmart and an overnight stay at Gurney’s in Montauk. All are welcome to attend! If you bring school supplies to be donated, you will receive a single raffle ticket for each item you donate.

The Social Brain is a brand new 501(c)(3) non profit in the state of New York. They are on the brink of breaking through as one of the most unique and helpful organizations that serves those suffering from a brain injury. Their mission is to provide brain injury survivors the opportunity to build friendships through socialization and reduced isolation.

This organization began in January 2019 when a group of individuals, families and professionals joined together to brainstorm ideas of how they can help brain injury survivors socialize and partake in various hobbies together. Many survivors spend much of their lives in and out of rehab and home feeling isolated, but The Social Brain formed to change that. After hosting various events for survivors such as a day at Sweetbriar Nature Center, a Bowling Event, a Library Day and an afternoon at Four Star Ranch, it was obvious that they were reaching a population in need. Just last month, The Social Brain was granted 501(c)(3) status in the state of New York and they have just started working out of a community center located at 202 Middle Country Road in Middle Island.

The Social Brain operates solely on volunteers and their outreach comes not only from word of mouth, but from help through their recent partnerships with local hospitals, school districts, neurology departments, Peconic Speech Services in Riverhead and St. Joseph’s College.

Survivors from all over Long Island are welcome to get involved with The Social Brain. On average, each event they host has about 30-40 participates and there is no age restrictions.

Mosquito Samples Test Positive For West Nile Virus Suffolk County Health Commissioner Dr. James Tomarken announced that five mosquito samples have tested positive for West Nile virus. The samples, all Culex pipiensrestuans, were collected on July 25 from Cold Spring Harbor (2), Northport (1), Brentwood (1), and Melville (1). These are the first mosquito samples to test positive for West Nile virus in Suffolk County this year.

In addition, two dead birds, one collected in Northport, the other collected in Nesconset, tested positive for West Nile virus.

West Nile virus, first detected in birds and mosquito samples in Suffolk County in 1999 and again each year thereafter, is transmitted to humans HELPING SHELTER ANIMALS - Students in Mrs. Russo’s 2nd grade class at Fifth by the bite of an infected Avenue School collected and recycled water bottles during the school year.
