Well, dear readers, the calendar pages have just flown on by, landing on August – my Human’s birthday month, and, more importantly, my 18-month adoption anniversary. Seeing as I didn’t come with an official birth certificate, no one can be quite certain of my precise age, but we’ll assume I’ve been flitting around for at least a solid two years at this point. Not too shabby. My fins, on the other hand…

Ah, but enough about me.

My Human, so I’ve read, is hard at work on compiling a collection of her finest columns. Of course, I’m only interested in those that bear my name and stunning photo, but I suppose her accomplishments deserve a little recognition as well. Just a little. As long as I get a side book deal out of it.

On another note, I think I may have been a bit hasty in ushering out my tank mate, Squeegee. Since his untimely (“accidental”) demise, my bowl has become increasingly overrun by algae build-up – on the rocks, the gravel, even my favorite plant leaf. My Human keeps unceremoniously dumping me into my original oh-so-tiny bowl while she cleans and rinses and dries the contents of my suite, but to no avail. Only a week or so later, and it’s time for another complete overhaul. Where’s my little vacuum snail when I need him??

Speaking of meals… I’ve decided that waiting for my flakes to drop is simply too much trouble. Instead, I prefer to lunge out of the water the second I see so much as the shadow of my Human’s hand.

It’s much faster that way. Plus,

it eliminates the possibility of my glorious fins accidentally swatting my flakes to the floor, never to be seen again.

Well, unless I happen to be napping between the leaves of my plant – then I occasionally come across a snack to munch on. I like to switch up my bedtime spot depending upon my mood. Currently, I can most often be found lying on top of the filter in the corner. I love to see the look on my Human’s face as she desperately searches for me.

As if I could burrow down into the gravel and disappear… or can I? Such is the life of a fish.

Eating, sleeping and plotting new activities to consume my days. I am quite entertaining, if I do say so myself. Now, as for my upcoming birthday… is it too late to ask for a new Squeegee?

Coney Island USA’s Sideshow School is the only school of its kind where students can learn the ancient and sometimes deadly secrets of the sideshow. A new crop of thrill seekers will be attending the next session, scheduled for August 22nd-24th at Sideshows by the Seashore.

Now in its 16th year, Sideshow School has taught dozens of potential circus, sideshow and carnival workers how to walk on glass, eat and breathe fire, swallow swords, and hammer nails into their faces, along with a handful of other of the sideshow’s ‘working acts’.

Students take the class at their own risk and must sign a hold harmless agreement absolving the school and its instructors from any possible injuries the students might incur.

“In all the years that I’ve

taught sideshow school,” Dean and Professa, Adam Rinn declares, “nobody has ever gotten hurt.” Rinn himself was a graduate of the Sideshow School and went on to become a prolific performer who has entertained audiences throughout North America.

Sessions are capped at 10 students so that each student can learn in a safe and controlled atmosphere. “Safety is key when learning these feats,” says Rinn,“we don’t force anything upon the students, they attend the school because they want to learn these unique acts.

It’s important to be patient and work with the students at their level.”

Those attending the three day, hands on seminar have ranged from doctors, authors and teachers who have a general interest in sideshow and circus arts

to magicians, jugglers and bartenders who have used some of the skills they have learned in their own line of work to sideshow performers looking to expand their repertoire.

But it is not all about the ‘working acts.’ The three day session also offers a history of the legendary amusement district and its role in olde time and contemporary freak shows.

“It’s very rewarding when the students conquer their fears and hit the ground running,” The Professa states. “After each session, I get a slew of emails thanking me and telling me what a life changing experience sideshow school was. It certainly was for me!”

Volunteer Training Breast cancer survivors have the opportunity to help people concerned with breast cancer by becoming volunteers with the Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program. The 4-session free training will be held on four consecutive Wednesdays, September 14th, 21st, 28th and October 5th, from 5 to 8 p.m., at the program’s offices on the Adelphi University Campus in Garden City.

“We know that it is very helpful for a caller to our hotline to speak with someone who has been there,” says social worker Alida Rubenstein, the program’s hotline coordinator.

Once the volunteers complete their training,

they are able to select hours that fit into their schedules. Their jobs will be to answer the hotline and provide information and emotional support to callers. They can also do outreach at community events.

Thousands of Long Islanders are expected to join the American Heart Association’s Long Island Heart Walk on Sunday, September 18th to raise funds to fight heart disease and stroke, America’s No. 1 and No. 5 causes of death,.

The annual event begins at 8:30 a.m. at Jones Beach, Field 5 in Wantagh, NY. The non-competitive, three-mile walk includes teams of employees from local companies, along with friends and family members of all ages.

“For every hour of brisk walking, life expectancy may increase for some adults by two hours,” said Linda Armyn, SVP Corporate Affairs at Bethpage Federal Credit Union and Long Island Chair of the 2016 Long Island Heart Walk.

Two patients treated for potentially life-threatening brain aneurysms will be featured on Saturday, September 24th, when the Brain Aneurysm Center of Northwell Health’s Neuroscience Institute, along with the Brain Aneurysm Foundation (BAF), host Long Island’s Eighth Annual Brain Aneurysm Awareness Four-Mile Fun Run/TwoMile Walk at Jones Beach State Park.

The walk will feature survivors - Stacy Allen, 41, from East Islip, and Meredith Brosnan, 70, from Glen Head, who will share their stories to increase awareness of the warning signs of a brain aneurysm - severe headache, nausea, blurred or double vision, stiff neck or neck pain, pain above or behind the eye and loss of sensation.

Ms. Allen was exercising at the gym on New Year’s Day, when she experienced a terrible headache. A chronic migraine sufferer for the past 12 years, she didn’t think too much of it, but decided to go home. Upon arriving at her house, the headache became more intense and was accompanied by neck pain. Eventually, she lost consciousness. Her 16 yearold son, Thomas called 911 and Ms. Allen was sent to Southside Hospital in Bay Shore, where a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan revealed a ruptured brain aneurysm. She was transferred by helicopter to North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset, where Dr. Avi Setton, co-director of Northwell Health’s Brain Aneurysm Center, performed a minimally invasive endovascular coiling procedure.

The procedure required insertion of a catheter

into the femoral artery in the leg, which was then navigated through the blood vessels to the location of the aneurysm in the brain. Soft platinum coils were inserted through the catheter and deployed in the aneurysm, conforming to its shape, filling the sac and blocking blood flow. The coiling was a success.

After a three-week stay in the hospital’s neurosurgical intensive care unit (ICU), Ms. Allen was later able to return to her paralegal job, regular gym activities and busy schedule as a mother of three children. “If my son hadn’t called 911, my outcome could have been different,” said Ms. Allen.

“Doctors Setton and [codirector Dr. David] Chalif saved my life. They are amazing doctors. Since my incident, I see things more clearly now and I am much more appreciative of every day. I try not to stress about the small things.”

Similar to Ms. Allen, Ms. Brosnan also suffered a ruptured brain aneurysm.

In November 2014, she was at her daughter’s house when “an odd feeling” in her head caused her to collapse. She was sent to Glen Cove Hospital, where an MRI scan revealed a ruptured brain aneurysm. Ms. Brosnan was transferred to North Shore University Hospital, where Dr. Chalif surgically clipped the aneurysm, by working through a small opening in the skull, locating the aneurysm with an operating microscope and cutting the blood flow by placing a clip across the base - allowing blood to flow normally elsewhere in the brain.

Ms. Brosnan, an avid sailor, has been able to resume those activities.

This summer she is

enjoying the boat she had purchased two weeks prior to her incident. “I am devoting more time to things that are important,” she said. “Dr. Chalif and the wonderful staff at the hospital saved my life!”

Dr. Chalif explained that “ruptured brain aneurysms are fatal in about 40 percent of cases but thanks to the quick actions of Ms. Allen and Ms. Brosnan’s family members in seeking prompt medical attention, their lives were saved. By sharing their stories at our walk this year, they will help spread awareness about the warning signs of a brain aneurysm and save lives.”

Hundreds of walkers including brain aneurysm survivors, their families and friends - are expected to attend the fun-filled event.

Many doctors, nurses and staff members from Northwell Health’s Brain Aneurysm Center will also be on hand to show their support for the many patients they have treated over the years.

Among those who will be attending are Dr. Chalif and Dr. Setton. Proceeds from the walk will benefit Northwell Health’s Brain Aneurysm Center and the BAF, helping support essential research into how to help prevent cases of ruptured aneurysms.

Registration for the walk begins at 8:30 a.m. at Jones Beach State Park, Field 5, 1000 Ocean Parkway, Wantagh. The start time is 10 a.m. and the event will be held rain or shine.

The registration fee is $25 through September 10th.

After September 10th, the registration fee is $30, so register early! Entry fee includes the cost of parking and snacks. Teeshirts will be handed out on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Safety Olympics

The students at Eastern Suffolk BOCES (ESBOCES) Premm Learning Center participated in Safe Kids Safety Olympics and received a “Champion Medal.” Safe Kids is led by Northwell Health whose goal is “keeping our kids safe.”

Safe Kids is an educational program that is easy

to implement.

The curriculum includes seven learning stations related to safety in sports, bicycling, water, pedestrian safety, fire, car, and home safety.

Each student receives a “Safety Passport” and after completing all seven learning stations, receives a “Safety Olympics Champion” stamp and a “Champion Medal.”

Safe Kids Coordinator Katherine Blotiau said, “I hope the students come away with the idea that fun activities should be safe and how they can be safe by wearing protective gear like a helmet or a life jacket.”

Blotiau noted that the Kiwanis, a global organization dedicated to improving the world, one child at a time, generously donated funding to Safe Kids.

The theme for all the special education summer programs was the Brazil Olympics in Rio. The Safety Olympics complemented and enhanced the summer Olympic theme at the Premm Learning Center.

ESBOCES vision and speech teacher adapted many of the seven stations specifically for the Premm population.

A staff member brought in the family boat so students could climb in, wear life jackets, pretend to bail water, pull up a jib, and learn where to stow items. To enhance the experience of learning about pedestrian and car safety, the students played Bingo. Therapeutic and balance bikes used at PLC fit perfectly into the bike safety station, and an inflatable pool was used to emphasize water safety in and around open water.

Blotiau marveled at the creativity and ingenuity of the PLC staff saying, “This is the first time I’ve seen the car station be adapted with Bingo cards, or a boat or a pool available to students for a true hands-on learning experience. I’m happy that curriculum was well received by the staff and they could adapt each learning station to the students here at Premm.”

CONGRATULATIONS CHAMPS - Suffolk County Legislator Tom Barraga recently congratulated the West Islip’s Baseball Little League 8-9-10 Williamsport Team for winning the District 34 Championship and the New York State Section 4 East Championship.

EAST MEETS WEST - West Islip Cub Scout Pack 83 joined together with East Islip Boy Scout Troop 254 and built a picnic table for Paul J. Bellew Elementary School in West Islip. Pictured here are some of the scouts and leaders and Mrs. Pratt, the school’s principal.

In mid June, the Ladies Ancient Order of Hibernian’s Suffolk County Board partnered with and hosted a fundraiser for the Babylon Breast Cancer Coalition.

This Taste of Babylon event was held at the Hibernian Cultural Center on Locust Avenue in Babylon Village. They had a beautiful day for the event, which was attended by 235 guests. Thanks to the restaurants, bakeries, florists, liquor stores and distributors who donated their food, flowers and wine to make this event truly special.

Riley’s winery participated, as did Destination Unknown Craft Brewery, lending to the success.

A special thank you to Chapeys Funeral Home for donating Wheel of Fortune, and to all of the businesses throughout

SCLAOH Board President and Co-Chair Patricia Rattigan presented Breast Cancer Coalition President Karen Kunkel with a check for $7,500 to help in taking care of the women currently fighting Breast Cancer.

many wonderful ladies from throughout the county, along with BBCC Board members, Co-Chair Ericka Tripoli, Beverly Flagherty and Eileen Molloy.

Golf Invitational The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD) is pleased to announce its upcoming 36th Annual R. Brinkley Smithers Golf Invitational.

This landmark charity tournament will take place on Monday, September 19th and participants will have their choice of teeing off at The Creek Club or Piping Rock Club in Locust Valley.

Named for LICADD Founder, R. Brinkley Smithers, the tournament’s proceeds ensure that the services LICADD provides - from screening, intervention and referral services, to recovery support, an Employee Assistance

Program and mentoringall remain accessible to the individuals and families who are most affected by drug and alcohol abuse on Long Island.

Power hitting outfielder Darryl Strawberry, will Keynote this event with his personal story of success and redemption.

It is important to know that no matter what you go through, we are not a mistake - we make mistakes,” says Keynote speaker Darryl Strawberry.

This high energy, fast-paced event offers a challenging round on two of Long Island’s premier courses, but it has also become so much more. Event Co-Chairs,

Bill Baum, Michael Brennan and Board Chair Jeffery Capazzi, explained the appeal of R. Brinkley Smithers, “it is wonderful to be involved in organizing this event, especially when the need for proven drug and alcohol support is so evident and continues to escalate each year.”

Prizes will be awarded in team and individual categories, and participants will have their chance to “Beat the Pro.” With dozens of silent auction, live auction, and raffle prizes, everyone will feel like a winner, even if their scores are well over par. The live auction boasts playing opportunities at some of the country’s

top courses, while the raffle features exciting vacation packages. “Rest assured this is not your run-of-the-mill golf tournament,” explained Executive Director Steve Chassman, LCSW, CASAC. “It is an opportunity to provide hope and healing to at-risk individuals and the families who support them.”
