The Modern Era
The modern era is often referred to as the “Digital Age,” but mankind’s relationship with science and technology dates back much further than the 21st century. According to Wired.com, in 2006 scientists confirmed that a device discovered in 1900 amid the remains of an ancient Mediterranean shipwreck was an analog computer. The device, since dubbed the
“Antikythera Computer,” was believed to help calculate astronomical cycles so sailors could more easily sail between Alexandria and Athens. The Antikythera Computer has been dated to sometime around the first century B.C., proving that man’s fascination with gadgets is an ancient one that has been paying dividends for millenia.

participated in a traditional exhibition complete with an in-person reception and people milling around the museum. But because of the shutdowns caused by the COVID-19, the “Art at 50 plus” series had to be reimagined. Curated by Holly Gordon, the virtual exhibition combined artwork and short audio statements from artists
across New York State. Then Waldo Cabrera added music, visual effects, and animation to create an impactful and moving one hour exhibition. Last year’s “New Beginnings” show was so ground-breaking that it won a Long Island Press Award. AARP NY was so enthused about the 2021 “Forever Young” exhibition that they promoted the opening ceremony nationwide to over 35 million members. Lynda Moran, the Executive Director of the Islip Arts Council was thrilled with the nationwide participation. She added that, “… being on this Sip-andSee virtual exhibition with participants from so many other cities gave the virtual exhibition more life than it already had with the animation and sound impacting the artwork.” Participants that shared their reaction to the exhibition haled from Michigan, North Carolina, Illinois, West Virginia, Florida, Colorado, Arizona, and California. Much credit must be given to the Islip Arts Council, who manages the Islip Art Museum, for coming out of the pandemic in such a glorious way. Many arts organizations folded during the shutdowns, but IACs pivot to online programming and services has strengthened and expanded its reach
exponentially. The Islip Art Museum and AARP still have one more big event up their sleeves. Gordon and Cabrera are teaming up again later this year to curate an innovative virtual exhibit called “2 Together.” It is designed to blur generational boundaries and invite adults 50 plus to partner with a youngster 14-18 to create a work of art of their choosing together. In depth interviews with the exhibiting pairs will become part of this virtual exhibit. What the Islip Arts Team has accomplished during this lockdown is astonishing and we have so much more to offer that will contribute to the wellbeing of the Town of Islip community and beyond. Inaugural Bike Rodeo And Bicycle Check Event
The Inaugural Bike Rodeo and Bicycle Check event was cohosted by Councilman O’Connor, Assemblyman Jarett Gandolfo, Congressman Andrew Garbarino, the Central Islip Public Library, along with State and local Law Enforcement agencies on July 10, 2021. Islip Town Councilman, James P. O’Connor said “This event truly had a community-driven energy to it. Our friends at the New York State Police, New York State Park Police, Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office, and Suffolk County Police Department (3rd Precinct) made this event a great success with their interactive bicycle obstacle courses, live K9 demos, and free give aways. Vendors such as Trek Bicycle conducted free
bicycle and helmet safety checks onsite.” Councilman James O’Connor continued “The COVID-19 pandemic has adversely impacted so many of us, in so many ways. I am continuously amazed by the generosity and sense of philanthropy that has echoed through the different communities here in the Town of Islip. For example, the East Islip Chamber of Commerce continued their give back efforts, to the entire Town of Islip community, by generously donating two boys bikes, two girls bikes, along with 11 safety helmets as free Raffle Prizes. This spirit of giving back to our community was also echoed by the Anchor Church of East Islip who also donated two bicycles as free raffle prizes.”

Bringing community partners such as the dedicated women and men in law enforcement, libraries, small businesses, non-profits, and town residents safely back together, as we push to move forward, since the height of the pandemic. During the pandemic local bike sales significantly increased. For this reason, Bicycle Safety is an important issue, especially during the Long Island summer season. Whether you are riding a bike down a street or along one of the Town’s picturesque parks or beaches, I urge all residents to check your equipment, always wear a bicycle helmet, and follow the rules of the road” concluded Councilman James O’Connor.

Breakthrough Intensive PT Hosting Super-Marathon Fundraiser Founder and CEO of Breakthrough Intensive Physical Therapy, Dr. Christine Astarita, will be hosting and running a super-marathon from Montauk, NY to the Breakthrough office in Islandia, NY on September 4th, 2021 (85 miles total). This event is special for a vast amount of reasons. Not only will the money raised be donated to Angela’s House (Long Island based non-profit organization that assists
families caring for children with special health care needs, the chronically ill, medically fragile, or those suffering from a life threatening illness), Christine is also offering two prizes to the top 2 families who start a team and raise the most money to support the fundraiser. The first place winner will be receiving a $1,000 credit towards their sessions at Breakthrough. The Second place winner will receive a $500 credit.
Here’s the twist! Dr. Astarita will be selecting a group of clients to push in an adaptive stroller for certain legs of the run. This idea was inspired by the legendary Dick Hoyt, who competed in races with his son Rick over 32 times! She also invites anyone who wants to support this cause to run alongside her, ride in an adaptive tricycle, or just cheer her on from the sideline! Christine wants to bring the special needs community
together to celebrate their resilience and prove their abilities, strength, growth, and ability to adapt. This past year has been challenging for most people, especially this community. These families had to fight extra hard to get the equipment and care needed during the pandemic. Children’s norms got flipped upside down, forcing them to adapt and adjust. But they overcame the stormy season that was brought onto them,
