SERENITY GARDENS TO CATER TO ALL ABILITIES - The Town of Islip Parks Foundation broke ground on its first-ever Serenity Gardens, a much-anticipated inclusive “park within a park” that will cater to people with visual and hearing impairments; Alzheimer’s, or dementia, those on the autism spectrum; seniors; veterans, and all who enjoy the beauty of nature and the outdoors.
The Town of Islip Parks Foundation broke ground on its first-ever Serenity Gardens, a much-anticipated inclusive “park within a park” that will cater to people with visual and hearing impairments; Alzheimer’s, or dementia, those on the autism spectrum; seniors; veterans, and all who enjoy the beauty of nature and the outdoors.
Located on the grounds of Brookwood Hall, Serenity Gardens will be a first-ofits-kind park in the Town, providing people of all abilities a way to enjoy nature, in an environment constructed for their individual needs.
“This, of course, would not have been possible without the dedicated members of the private nonprofit Parks Foundation of Islip Town, and our devoted community, whose donations ensure all $2 million of this garden park is entirely funded free of any burden to taxpayers,” said Islip Town Supervisor, Angie Carpenter. “The formation of this Islip Parks Foundation has really been a dream come true for me, and something I was proud
to spearhead and make a priority,” said the Supervisor.
Once complete, Serenity Gardens will feature lush foliage and greenery to promote tranquility; fragrant plants and flowers; a garden with a braille system; a walking labyrinth made of stones; sensory walking paths with mulch, tactile pads, rubber and gravel; wind chimes, as well as a sensory wall.
Wide walking paths will surround the entire park and divide it into four quadrants. With the groundbreaking, the Town will begin the process of prepping for these individual components, the first being a large gazebo that will anchor each of the quadrants at the center.
“We must also thank our dedicated Parks and DPW Department, who have been working hard to prepare this Park for installation and will now be hard at work to make our dream for Serenity Gardens a soon-to-be-had reality,” said Supervisor Carpenter.
The Entenmann Family is sponsoring the Veterans/ Seniors quadrant and the Bohlsen Group is sponsoring the Autism/Developmentally Disabled quadrant.
Quadrant sponsors for the Alzheimer’s Disease/ Dementia quadrant or the Sight/Hearing Impaired quadrant are available. The Foundation is also seeking community feedback and input for Serenity Gardens.

STUDENT WINS SCIENCE HONORS - Bay Shore High School science research student, Liaba Niami, won the Honors Award at the Long Island Science Congress awards. Liaba tested the effects of Ascorbic Acid (Vitamin C) and Trametes versicolor (Turkey Tail Mushroom) on plant cancer in Cucumis sativus (Cucumber). A few of them tried, and failed, to buy a home; others simply didn’t know where to start. The common thread with all the buyers was unpreparedness; none of them were able to make an immediate move if they found the right house. I gave them some advice which prompted my August article: 12 tips for home buyers today.

Lodestar Children’s Services Recognized For Their Youth Programs
Legislator Steven J. Flotteron recognized Lodestar Children’s Services, a nonprofit organization established in 2016, in Suffolk County, and has since expanded to include all of Long Island, Queens & Brooklyn, at the
“Then & Now” fundraiser at the CM Performing Arts Center in Oakdale. Their services provide mental health care to children ages 0-21 years old and their caregivers in the home, hopefully keeping these children out of
institutions. It is believed by doing so it will give them a better chance at long- lasting results when they can learn in the safety and comfort of their own homes and communities.

Cadets Sworn-In To Town Of Islip Law Enforcement Training Academy
Six cadet Peace Officers were recently swornin to the Town of Islip’s 14-week New York State certified Law Enforcement Academy program, led by the Town’s NYS certified instructors.
The robust Academy has been built from the ground
up, to better prepare recruits and current officers for service here in our Town and beyond, by providing classroom instruction in law, ethics, communication, daily defensive tactics, as well as de-escalation, Narcan, CPR and First Aid training.
“We are so proud of our dedicated and knowledgeable instructors for the invaluable training they provide, and look forward to welcoming the cadets and officers who complete their training and emerge better equipped to
serve the public,” said Islip Supervisor Angie Carpenter.
In addition to training Town of Islip Park Rangers, Harbormasters, Fire Marshalls and Long Island MacArthur Airport Security Officers, the Islip program also provides NYS
Municipal Police Training Council (MPTC) to area peace and police officers, and is a recommended program to outside law enforcement agencies by the NYS Division of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS).

Scouts BSA Troops 43 And 430 Support The BSFD Run To The Pump Event
Troops 43 & 430 both charted by AMVETS Post 76 of Bay Shore, worked together to support the Bay Shore Fire Department’s Run to the Pump 5K on Saturday July 15, 2023. The scouts and scouters provided water and encouragement to the runners at the 1/2 way point.
This has been a busy week for the scouts as the majority of Troop 430 was preparing to head to a week of summer camp the following day.
