Students at the Eastern Suffolk BOCES Masera Learning Center (MLC) applied the sequencing skills they learned during the regular school year to a summer crafting project.

They created a beach scene and personalized foam visors.

Sequencing is an essential skill for children to learn.

Identifying components and placing them in order with a beginning, middle, and an end teaches children and students in many special education classrooms how to make connections and

keep ideas in the correct order.

Building Coordinator Lisa Newcombe said, “The students are engaged in educational learning experiences with every activity they participate in during the summer program.”

For the beach themed crafting project, each student was given decals and icons related to the beach; functional things you do with friends and family and seasonal things that would be found at the beach.

“They were prompted

with ‘Where does the umbrella go?’ or ‘Where would we find the seagull?’, the student would find the umbrella decal and place it appropriately in the sand on the beach, likewise the decal of the seagull would be appropriately placed in the blue sky above the water,” said Newcombe.

Summer activities at MLC are sponsored by the schools’ Parent Teacher Organization (PTO). They are fun, educational, and inspire creativity.

Boating Safety Day

On Saturday, July 22nd, Supervisor Romaine participated in Boating Safety Awareness Day at Nicki’s on the Bay in Bay Shore. The event was organized by Gina Costa Lieneck, the mother of Brianna Lieneck, who was killed when a boat crashed into the craft that held her and her family as passengers on the Great South Bay in 2005. Since

the incident, Gina has become an advocate for boating safety.

Lieneck and Captain Richard Werner co-hosted a Boating Safety Awareness Day in collaboration with Safe Boating America (www.safeboatingamerica. com). The event kicked off with a press conference to raise awareness for boating safety and urging legislation for the licensing

of all boaters.

Joining the Supervisor were Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone and Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter. The day continued with informational seminars and water safety classes in an effort to help make water recreation safer for everyone on Long Island.

Coins for Camp

Family Service League (FSL), a Long Island based non-profit human service organization, has been hosting a camp program which has been helping atrisk Long Island children for over 45 years. The Westfield South Shore Mall, located at 1701 Sunrise Hwy., Bay Shore, New York, was the site of the Ribbon-Cutting for the “Coins for Camp Wishing Well” project. Community leaders and families joined the FSL to kickoff this vital program that strives to help Long Island children in need.

A camp experience is positive outlet to help steer children struggling with the challenges of poverty away from the temptations of gang involvement, street violence, drugs and alcohol by providing an environment that fosters life skills, develops self- esteem, and forges new friendships. A new partner in this worthwhile

endeavor is Westfield Mall.

The Westfield Management Team graciously agreed to install “Coins for Camp Wishing Wells” as permanent installations in its Westfield South Shore Mall, located in Bay Shore, and the Westfield Sunrise Mall, located in Massapequa.

“Working with organizations like Family Service League is wholly consistent with Westfield’s commitment to giving back to the communities where we do business,” said Vanessa Mitton, Marketing Director for Westfield South Shore and Westfield Sunrise. “We are happy to support Family Service League’s CAMP program that provides a positive experience for atrisk youth.”

FSL receives over 350 camp applications each year. This summer, thanks to donor support, FSL was able to place 244 campers in 21 day camps and 5

sleepaway camps, ranging from 1 to 3 weeks of summer fun for each child.

Campers are enjoying activities such as hiking, swimming, kayaking, rock climbing, music, arts and crafts, and sports of all kinds – all of which will provide lasting memories.

The experience gives them an opportunity to get away from loneliness, boredom, and a respite from what is often a troubled home life in a dangerous community.

Unfortunately, each year there are children left on a wait-list or denied access to camp due to rising costs and insufficient funding.

The “Coins for Camp Wishing Wells” and spare change can make a difference!

Moving forward FSL believes that the generosity of Long Island Westfield shoppers will help bridge the gap by “making a wish” and donating coins in a fun interactive way in support FSL’s camp program.

many famous artists and writers including Delacroix, Voltaire, Renoir and Corot. We also visited the tomb of the iconic French singer Edith Piaf. The students had a private tour of Versailles, where we entered Louis XIV’s bedroom and private apartment. We explored Montmartre and the Sacre Coeur as well as the Eiffel Tower and Arc de Triomphe. We ended our stay in Paris with a

fabulous boat ride down the Seine, experiencing the City of Lights and all its splendor with the twinkling Eiffel Tower as our backdrop. In Nice, the students visited the famous Fragonard perfume factory and the king’s palace in Monaco. It was a fantastic trip with perfect weather, and the students all left with the desire to return.”

Raising Funds

King Kullen and its full-service natural food marketplace, Wild by Nature, recently helped raise funds to benefit three organizations providing services to children with disabilities.

The annual “Brighter Future for Children with Disabilities” campaign encouraged customers to donate at the check-out counter, with King Kullen rounding the amount raised to $9,000 to be

divided equally among The Viscardi Center and the Nassau County and Suffolk County Chapters of AHRC. King Kullen CoPresidents Brian C. Cullen and J. Donald Kennedy met with representatives of each group to present the contributions.

Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter is pleased to announce that the rehabilitation at Roberto Clemente Park has reached several milestones, and that Town officials are hopeful that the park will reopen in the very near future.

New picnic tables and benches have been added alongside playground equipment, and the parking lot is scheduled to be repaired and striped. The basketball courts have been renovated, the ballfields have been prepared for use,

and the fencing around the ball fields has been improved. This fall, the entire site will be irrigated and seeded. Town officials are optimistic about the park’s prospects.

Special Tour Held On Monday, July 17th, Suffolk County Legislator Kevin McCaffrey attended a tour at GKN Aerospace with the Girl Scouts of Suffolk County (GSSC).

The tour took place at GKN’s location in Amityville and was attended by GSSC Leadership, GKN Aerospace staff and girl scouts from various troops in Suffolk County.

The tour was led by female GKN employees and organized to expose the Girl Scouts to non-traditional career paths in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). For the tour, the Girl Scouts were broken up into small groups led by women working in various career

fields at GKN Aerospace to show the breadth of career opportunities available.

“I was glad to be a part of the tour today and enjoyed helping the Girl Scouts learn about different career paths that they might not have been exposed to previously,” said Legislator McCaffrey. “GKN Aerospace were incredible hosts and made the tour memorable for everyone involved.”

Mid-Summer Tournament For a quarter of a century, Star Island Yacht Club has been hosting its annual mid-summer sport fishing tournament: the Mako, Thresher & Tuna Tournament. This year’s tournament will take place from August 4th to 5th.

With overnight fishing and expanded categories, this will be the most exciting tournament sport fishing enthusiasts and spectators will see this August on the East End. Prizes will be offered for Heaviest Mako, Heaviest

Thresher and Heaviest Tuna. Once again, anglers can also bring in any species of Tuna, including Blue Fin; this gives the participants better odds of bringing in the winning catch. As a result of this expansion last year, Star Island paid out more than $150,000 in cash and prizes.

Back for this year’s tournament is overnight fishing, which will allow participants to stay out overnight, in the event they did not have fish to weigh

in for the first day or if they weighed in earlier and wanted to get a head start on Day Two. Although only one shark may be weighed in per day, more than one tuna may be weighed per day, as long as the anglers are in accordance with National Marine Fisheries regulations.

Last year, the heaviest shark caught was a 288-pound Mako aboard Capt. Chuck Mallinson’s Joy Sea. Participants and fans will also have the opportunity

to learn about these mysterious, sometimes dangerous and often misunderstood species from marine biologists who will be on-site. These marine biologists will be available to comment on the migration habits, predatory nature and the health of the species.

Fishing starts at 6 a.m. on both days and ends on Friday at 6 p.m. and on Saturday at 5 p.m. An awards ceremony will commence at the end of the tournament. Entry fee is

$800 per boat. For anglers who would like to get in on the action but do not own a boat, the Star Island Yacht Club Charter Boat fishing fleet is available for hire for one or both days of the tournament.

Star Island wishes to advise all prospective participants that, as per Environmental Conservation Law 130338, New York State law now requires that all shark tournament participants use non-stainless steel non-offset circle hooks

exclusively.

Dockage is available on a first-come, first-serve basis. Transient rates for the tournament are $6.00 per foot for up to 59 feet, $6.50 per foot for 60 to 84 feet and $7.50 per foot for 85 feet and up. Utilities are $30 for 30-amp and singlecord, 50-amp service and $50 for two-cord, 50-amp service.

A Funny Thing Happened A funny thing happened on my last trip to the beach; rather, several amusingly bizarre things that left my friend and I shaking our heads in bewilderment and wondering if we were, in fact, part of some sort of candid camera exposé.

On this particular afternoon, we literally sailed along the Robert Moses Causeway, over all three bridges, and were parked in less than 30 minutes - a record-breaking feat, to be sure, and a far improvement over the recent painstakingly slow bumper-to-bumper expeditions we have had to contend with. Amazed at this fortunate turn of events, we began to unload the car and make our way to the sand, when we noticed the deafening silence.

Usually, the beach is filled with the sounds of children laughing and playing, radios blasting a cacophony of musical notes, the waves crashing against the shoreline… but on this particular afternoon, there was only silence. It was as if we had entered a parallel universe, a bubble of tranquility.

Once we settled in, I noticed the enormous number of seagulls who seemed to be hovering nearby, taking off and landing a bit too close

for comfort. Just as I was thinking this one particular winged creature appeared to be launching its flight awfully low to the ground, my friend burst into laughter as he barely cleared her head. “He literally just hit me in the head!” she exclaimed.

“I just felt his feet running across my hair!”

From Candid Camera to Alfred Hitchcock, in a matter of minutes.

After an hour or so of baking in the hot sun, we decided to embark on our regular trek toward the Lighthouse in search of seashells, and of course that picture perfect shot of the waves crashing onto the shore. This time, I decided to make it my mission to collect several dozen oyster shells in order to create a heart-shaped work of art in the sand.

About one hour, and several ocean wipeouts of my masterpiece later, we decided to head back.

Now generally, after a lengthy absence, it is perfectly normal to find our blanket surrounded by new neighbors, or perhaps none, as the beach tends to begin to empty in the late afternoon sun. This time, we were greeted by a man, sitting in a single chair, surrounded by about a half dozen assorted beach bags,

coolers and folding chairs - and an umbrella… one giant umbrella, staked right at the edge of my blanket, engulfing our entire area in complete shadow.

I contemplated asking him to join us; then settled on politely asking him to move, as I hadn’t come to the beach to share his umbrella. He stared at me blankly, expressionless.

Then, without a word, he slowly, deliberately got up and moved his umbrella - about half an inch.

Completely bewildered, my friend and I exchanged a look. Was he serious? Were we the only people who understood the concept of personal boundaries? An entire field of sand, and here we were fighting over one square foot of space.

Flabbergasted, we decided to gather our things and move slightly up the beach, to a completely empty expanse devoid of rogue umbrellas, seagulls and any other potential pitfalls. As we settled into this new spot, we were startled by the sound of people squealing and turned to see our old area now engulfed by the high tide.

And there, in the middle of the surf, sat our old friend and his umbrella.

Going Above and Beyond Teachers provide many things to their students. In addition to an education, support and guidance, many teachers also feel compelled to enhance their classrooms with supplies they’ve purchased out-of-pocket.

According to a poll of 1,500 teachers conducted by the educational resource Edutopia, 93 percent of teachers feel obligated or somewhat obligated to buy school supplies for their

classrooms with their own money. The Education Market Association says that virtually all teachers wind up paying out of pocket for supplies. The amounts spent annually can be upwards of $1,000 per teacher. In addition, not all of the teachers funding supplies work in low-income districts.

A report published in early 2016 by the Center for Budget and Policy Priorities found that

many states now provide less financial support per student than they did before the recession took hold roughly nine years ago. Districts forced to work under tight budgets are increasingly outsourcing the costs of supplies to parents. When parents fail to provide supplies, teachers are bearing the brunt of the costs to avoid seeing their students go without necessary resources.

PUZZLE ANSWERS:

Choosing where to apply to college is a big decision that can affect the lives of young students for years to come. The college application process can have more immediate impacts as well, as U.S. News reported that the average college application fee was $41 in the spring of 2015, meaning families can expect to spend several hundred dollars just to apply to colleges.

The rising cost of a college

education coupled with a competitive job market only serve to emphasize the importance high school students and their families must place on deciding where to apply. The following are a handful of strategies families can employ to make students’ decisions regarding where to apply to college a little easier.

Don’t hesitate from applying to a dream school.

The Princeton Review defines dream schools as

those colleges or universities where a student’s academic credentials fall in the low end or below the school’s averages for students accepted the year prior. But even students who meet the academic requirements established by their dream schools may be hesitant to apply to such schools because of the cost of tuition. Students whose academic records fall just short of their dream schools’ criteria or whose financial

means make attending their dream schools seem impossible should still apply to those schools. Financial aid might be available, and schools might look at more than just academic performance, particularly for students whose grades fall just short of last years’ average accepted applicants.

Don’t be deterred by application fees. Stanford University’s application fee for 2017 was $90, making

Students should not expect each school to waive their application fees, but they also should not let those fees deter them from applying, especially if they meet or exceed the application requirements.

those colleges or universities where applicants’ academic credentials make them a near certainty to gain admission.

But when choosing safety schools, students should pick schools that they would enjoy attending. Applying to a school simply because you can get in and not because you want to enroll there can make for an unpleasant college experience should you ultimately end up attending that college.

Undefeated in bracket play, NYC Polo (Sam Ramirez Jr., Tommy Biddle, Jared Sheldon) returned to the U.S. Open Arena Polo Championship® Final at Country Farms Polo Club in Medford, capturing its second-straight title by a score of 19-12 over Blue Stone Farms.

NYC Polo’s originally slated opponent, High Ground, was forced to forfeit after player schedules were unable to be reconciled. First time contenders Blue

Stone Farms (Guilluame Gimonet, Guillermo Usandizaga, Alan Martinez) stepped up to the plate, substituting Martinez for Daniel Scott, who competed in the first two matches.

NYC Polo dominated the match, going 13/32 on field shots and 5/5 in penalty conversions. Blue Stone Farms only managed 8 field conversions on 20 shots and went 4/8 in penalty conversions while winning 7 throw-ins to NYC Polo’s 6.

NYC Polo dominated from the beginning, scoring four field goals in the first chucker, on their way to ending the half with a 9-4 lead. NYC Polo capitalized on two penalties to start the third before Sheldon widened the gap with three more tallies on his way to a 9-goal game.

Blue Stone Farms outscored NYC Polo in the final chucker with a. combined five goals by Usandizaga and Martinez and an additional penalty one, but Biddle hammered in three undefended penalties and a field goal to seize the win.

Most Valuable Player was awarded to Blue Stone Farms’ high-scorer Guillermo Usandizaga, contributing seven goals on the day. Best Playing Pony honors were presented to Cammy Boy, played by Jared Sheldon and owned

Medical Team Honored

In 2008 Dr. Coyne, Chief Surgeon and Medical Director of the Suffolk County Police Department, incepted the Medical Crisis Action Team also known as MedCAT. This team, which is now made up of 28 Police Officers, is trained in Adavanced Life Support (ALS) at the paramedic or EMT ciritical care level.

These officers can start IVs, perform intubation, administer medication and other advanced life support care. The Team is on call 24/7, and having them respond to a call can often save a life. The team is also comprised of five physicians who have specialized tactical training.

The MedCAT is also

trained to operate as a Medical Swat Team for high risk situations such as an active shooter or terrorist situation; they can provide care under fire to police officers and civilians and can handle Chemical, Biological, and Radiation attacks.

This well deserving group along with its mastermind, Dr. Coyne, was honored by Legislator Leslie Kennedy and the whole Legislature last Tuesday at their General Meeting. Having previously been honored at the national level with the 2017 National Officers Safety presented by the National Law Enforcement Memorial Fund and the US Department of Justice Valor Initiative, it was time

that they were honored locally.

“Dr. Coyne and his Medical Crisis Action Team are life-savers. Many of our residents have MedCAT to thank for their life,” said Legislator Kennedy “The innovative way they bring together life saving medcial techniques and effective police tactics is a point of pride for our Police Department and our County.”
