Assemblyman Fred W. Thiele, Jr. and State Senator Kenneth P. LaValle today announced that the State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) will host a series of meetings in July and August to gather feedback from key stakeholders about the State’s current commercial fishing licensing system and ideas for reforms to

modernize and improve the program.

Assemblyman Thiele and Senator LaValle brought this issue into focus last year when, in the State Legislature, they blocked the DEC from continuing the current archaic commercial fishing licensing scheme for another three years.

As a compromise, the licensing scheme was

limited to one (1) year and DEC Commissioner Basil Seggos agreed to come to Long Island last fall to meet with members of commercial fishing industry.

At that meeting, the industry unanimously supported two demands: 1) Challenge the federal quotas; and 2) Reform

In March, the DEC retained the services of marine fisheries consultant George LaPointe, who will facilitate the meetings.

A former Commissioner of the Maine Department of Natural Resources, Mr. LaPointe will analyze and evaluate the current marine commercial licensing system and provide recommendations on how to improve and revise it. The topics to be addressed include, specifying qualifications for license issuance; license transferability; identifying means of entry for new participants in New York’s fisheries; apprenticeship; and resolution of the latent licenses issue.

Metamorphosis

We all have a path, a journey we take through life. Some are relatively direct, with few bumps and curves along the way; others prove far more winding and full of detours. In the end, though, I believe we all reach the destination we are meant to. Eventually.

Last week, I touched on some of the ways I go about my craft, and how my writing has evolved through the years. In speaking to the next generation of potential journalists, the best experience I can draw upon is my own. There was a time when I was in their shoes, sitting in high school classrooms and then college lecture halls, wondering where exactly this path I had chosen would lead. It was during those formative years that I looked to my own sources of inspiration in the writing field for guidance, absorbing their styles and studying their techniques for

some hint of how I could apply these skills to my own drafts and create a unique voice.

Just today, in fact, I found myself perusing the archives of past “In Step” columns, searching for a tribute I had written following the passing of Ed Lowe, master storyteller, and one mentor I had the extreme good fortune to work with during my time here at South Bay. Seldom do we have the opportunity to meet our idols, let alone share in our mutual love of a particular craft. No matter the difference in age, or how vast the generational gap, there is simply no substitute for the wisdom of someone who has experienced those things you only dare to dream.

If you had asked me back in my formative years where I saw myself in ten, fifteen years time, I probably would have shrugged and said, “Hopefully reporting from the clubhouse of the New York Yankees” or “traveling across the country ala Almost Famous, searching for the next big story to be featured in Rolling Stone Magazine.” Realistic? Perhaps

not entirely. But these were the people, and the positions, I admired from afar and wished to emulate. Maybe it was the sense of prestige I found attractive, the celebrity aspect.

Fast forward into the real world of adulthood, and it wasn’t long before I discovered that, if you truly have a love for writing - or any particular skill - it truly doesn’t matter where you do it, what the topics entail or how much notoriety you gain in the process. The fact is, you can make a significant difference on any level, even within the confines of the local community you grew up in, surrounded by the family, friends and local followers you may be fortunate to gain along the way. And that is exactly what has happened, from this desk in Farmingdale, as I put fingertips to keyboard each week, drawing from my own life experiences and those who have inspired me.

The path may not always be clear, but the passion has never wavered. That, above all else, is what makes the journey worthwhile.

East Islip first-graders at Connetquot and Timber Point elementary schools recently participated in the Suffolk County “Be Pool Smart” poster contest in the form of an art lesson, with Connetquot student Anna Humann earning the top prize.

The intention of the contest was to showcase ways to be safe while swimming in the pool this summer. The students brainstormed safety concepts, then came up with ideas of what they could draw and how they

could design their posters.

Each student drew two practice sketches, deciding what to draw and showcase, how to color, and which colors to use, then chose their best idea for the final version.

Each Suffolk County legislative district chose one contender from their submissions, and a final judging of those posters by the Suffolk County Legislature’s budget review office selected Humann as the overall winner. Her design will become the cover of this year’s “Be

In 2010, Eileen began volunteering a considerable amount, offering free haircuts to people in need. Eileen felt so overjoyed by helping those in need look and feel beautiful for free while working within various types of socio economic communities that she eventually began her very own traveling salon. With its catchy slogan, Where Style Comes To You, Scanlon’s Traveling Salon now serves an abundance of people across Long Island.

As a licensed hair professional, Eileen has a following of paying customers, but her real passion lies with helping those who are not able to afford a haircut or hair process.

Sometimes, something as simple as gaining a new look can help a person feel better about him or herself and gain confidence again. Eileen generously and freely gives people that opportunity.

Some of the communities that Eileen serves are: the home confined and vulnerable, hospice, group homes, sober houses, assisted living communities and those who are differently abled.

Suffolk County Legislature Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory celebrated the inaugural year of his Distinguished Youth Awards Program by presenting awards to 35 young adults who participated in four areas to earn Bronze, Silver and Gold medals.

The event was held at the William H. Rogers Legislature Building in Hauppauge where the students gathered with their parents to be recognized by Presiding Officer Gregory and the Legislator representing the district in which they live.

Students, 12 of whom earned the Bronze Award, Nine who worked to earn a Silver Award and 14 earning a Gold, completed requirements that included 200 hours of Volunteer Service, 100 hours of Personal Development, 15 park visits for the Exploration part of the program and 100 hours of Physical Fitness.

In total, the students who ranged in age from 13-18, completed 5,075 hours of Volunteer Service, 7,061 of Personal

Development, 361 park visits for Exploration and 8,035 hours of Physical Fitness; a remarkable achievement given the challenging nature of the requirements.

“I am so proud of these young adults and deeply satisfied with their accomplishments,” said Presiding Officer Gregory. “These students worked very hard to meet the requirements and to complete the program and it’s a testament to their dedication and commitment. They are the cream of the crop.”

Joining the Presiding Officer were Legislators Tom Donnelly, Leslie Kennedy, Kevin McCaffrey, Robert Trotta, Monica

Martinez, William “Doc” Spencer who presented individual proclamations for youth in their districts, and serving as the presenter, Deputy Presiding Officer Robert Calarco.

Presiding Officer Gregory thanked Massiel Fuentes, Program Coordinator, under whose leadership the students completed the program.

Refreshments were served in the lobby following the presentations.

Registration for the program is currently underway and will be open until September 30th.

Flipgrid Bus Tour

Flipgrid is a video discussion platform that enables students to communicate their ideas in a deeper and more creative manner. Students use Flipgrid to make videos to ask or answer questions by teachers. Originally Dr. Charlie Miller, co-founder of Flipgrid, developed a version of Flipgrid called Vidku for his college students, as he was a professor at the University of Minnesota (UMN).

Since its official release in October of 2014 Flipgrid has 21 million active students across 181 countries. This platform is so well known, that every second 9 new videos are created and uploaded by students around the world.

Flipgrid has a total of over

300 years of combined content.

Flipgrid has been growing in popularity over the past year, and decided to go on a bus tour up the east coast. They started at Davis Elementary School in Marietta, Georgia and made their way up to Middletown High School in Rhode Island.

On their journey up the east coast, they stopped at our beautiful Bay Shore Middle School to meet with us and our librarian, Mrs. Holzweiss, who is one of their first ambassadors.

Students have been using Flipgrid in the library for almost 4 years! Their visit to our school induced excitement to those of whom used and enjoyed Flipgrid.

Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter was joined by members of the Islip Town Board and Town Public Safety officials recently, to honor three Town employees for their quickthinking responses to residents who were in lifethreatening situations.

In 2017, while en-route to an interview for the current position he holds, Joseph Cassano, a parttime dispatcher with the Town of Islip, jumped into action to aid a postal worker whose leg was injured when he was struck by a car while removing mail from the back of his truck. Dispatcher Cassano placed a tourniquet on the postal worker’s leg, until

EMS arrived and treated the injury. Most recently, in June 2018, Dispatcher Cassano stepped in to save an unresponsive gentleman who was locked in his vehicle, by breaking the window and preforming CPR until EMS arrived at the scene.

On June 30th, 2018 while on duty at Ronkonkoma Lake, Marina Guard Harry Torborg noticed an elderly woman who appeared to be out of breath and weakened by the extreme heat. He immediately assisted the woman to a bench, offered her water, and notified Marina Guard Supervisor John Hons.

The two asked the woman where she was heading, to

which she replied, ‘home to Hempstead.’ The guards immediately notified Suffolk County Police, and contacted a local assisted living facility where the woman had been residing.

She was treated at the hospital, released and is living in a long-term care facility.

“I am proud to say that here in the Town of Islip, we are fortunate to have the finest employees,” said Supervisor Carpenter.

“Their untiring efforts in ensuring the well-being of others, is demonstrated daily through their humility and compassion to those they have sworn to protect,” added the Supervisor.

At the Flipgrid presentation, they were very outgoing and energetic. Flipgrid had fun with the kids there and played around, danced, let the children sign their voice pod. Although they needed to be serious in the presentation they had a great sense of humor and made the students laugh.

They showed all of the different kids all around the world doing what they love and sharing their ideas and talents. We really enjoyed being around them. We wore our Techspert t-shirts with a Flipgrid fever logo on the shoulder. Overall our brief encounter with RECYCLING FOR A CAUSE - Mrs. Russo’s second grade class at Fifth Avenue the Flipgrid team was School, along with Mrs. Glynn, math teacher, had students from the school recycle extremely fun and exciting. water bottles. Every month they counted them and multiplied by 5 cents. At the end of the year they made $45.00. They voted on buying food and giving it to United Methodist Church Food Pantry.

Based on the theme of “A Film Within a Film,” theme, students Ryan DelGenio, Selia Mercado, Nancy Pramanand, James Rindos and Lauryn Valdez created the short film “Stuck in Bayside,” which advanced to the state finals.

Asset Conference

In the spring, the Bay Shore Middle School Techsperts went to the Suffolk ASSET Conference held at the Hilton Hotel in Huntington.

The experience was one to remember. Many of the exhibits contained many great ideas and inventions.

We enjoyed their hospitality and inspiration.

We thank those who stopped to observe our presentation and hope to see them again.

The Suffolk ASSET Conference was a very meaningful experience.

There were many remarkable demonstrations done

by other schools and organisations. One student even made a miniature arcade machine! One of our techsperts, Alejandro, used the website Buncee, to make an informational slideshow about our library. It just so happened that a few of Buncee’s representatives was at the conference and loved it. The best part the conference was the opportunity to demonstrate what the Bay Shore Middle School Library Techsperts do such as virtual reality, Flipgrid, and 3D printing. Everyone thought our 3D printed badges and t-shirts were awesome.

In the end the Suffolk ASSET conference was an amazing educational experience. With both companies and schools being under the same roof it enabled students to see what STEAM had in store for them. Companies can see how students used the technology, and students can see what technology is available to them. We thank our school principal Dr.Outlaw for supplying the bus transportation for the conference, and for our librarian Mrs. Holzweiss for writing the application for us to present and for chaperoning us.

Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter, NYS Assemblyman Phil Ramos, and Islip Town officials joined together today for a groundbreaking ceremony marking the construction of a state-of-the-art spray park at Roberto Clemente Park.

The much-anticipated spray park will offer various unique features and will be accessible to people of all ages and abilities.

The spray park, modeled after the Town of Islip’s ever-popular Shipwreck Cove in Bay Shore, will incorporate a splash pad with zero-depth entry into two age-appropriate pool areas. The park will be an inclusive spray park, accessible to young and old alike, as well as to people of all levels of ability or disability. Plans include 30 water features as well as its own filtration

system, separate from the main swimming pool.

Assemblyman Phil Ramos secured $2 million in state funding for the spray park, through the State and Municipal Facilities Program administered by the Dormitory Authority of New York State.

“We are pleased to begin construction on this stateof-the-art spray park. It will bring another level of fun to Roberto Clemente Park, which children of all ages and abilities can enjoy. We are grateful to Assemblyman Phil Ramos for securing the $2M in state funding for the spray park,” said Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter.

The Town of Islip will use its own resources for the demolition, including a 25 ton excavator with a hydraulic jackhammer, in an effort to save taxpayer dollars and reduce the total cost of the project.

The machinery will be used to break up concrete in preparation for construction, and will excavate approximately 50,000 lbs of soil.

The bid will be advertised Thursday, July 26th, 2018, with documents ready for pick up.

Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter was joined by members of the Islip Town Board recently, to recognize the efforts of the Animal Lover’s League of Locust Valley, who together with James Heil, Commissioner, Town of Islip Department of Environmental Control, launched a Trap-NeuterReturn program in Islip, to humanely reduce the

community cat population.

Eighteen volunteers in total attended the July Town Board meeting, to receive Certificates of Recognition for their service to the Islip community. Since launching in April, the TNR program has successfully spayed and neutered nearly 800 community cats, made possible through the tireless efforts of these volunteers.
