Rotarians Honor Interact Club Members of East Islip High School’s Interact Club were recently honored by the Rotary Club of the Islips at the organization’s meeting at the Irish Coffee Pub, with Rotary Club President Dennis Ciano congratulating the students for their “service above self.”

Interact Club members perform community service activities and work with Rotarians to complete local projects throughout the year.

This past school year, the students and Rotarians planted a vegetable garden at Brookwood Hall. Members of both clubs are tending the gardens and the vegetables will be donated to a local food pantry.

Rebuilding Together Long Island is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization. They are an affiliate of the national organization, Rebuilding Together. They provide free home repairs to the frail and elderly, our veterans, people with d i s a b i l i t i e s and families with children. Those who receive the free home repairs must have met their financial criteria. Their mission as an organization is to repair homes, revitalize communities and rebuild lives and they help Long Island’s economicallydisadvantaged homeowners so they can live in comfort and safety while maintaining their independence (RTLI does not service the Hamptons).

RTLI was founded in 1992 by a small group of volunteers that were eager to help needy homeowners. Today they have one paid employee and 200 volunteers, which are the heart and soul of their organization. Their experienced volunteers perform the vast majority of the work they do and they come from all walks of life.

This organization performs repairs including carpentry, electrical, plumbing and home modifications (including wheelchair ramps for the physically challenged), weatherization, installation of smoke alarms, back and front yard clean-ups and more. Since 1992 they have provided repairs to over 2,600 homeowners in need at a current pace of over 150 projects annually within Nassau and Suffolk.

Seeing improvement in the lives of Long Island residents is truly what makes all the hard-work from this organization worth it. With the support of all of their many volunteers and partners, Rebuilding Together Long Island has become a wellregarded organization, recognized for their work with rehabbing houses, the building and installation of ramps for those in need and their involvement with communities and organizations that span across Long Island. They need your help to keep up the momentum!

There are four main ways you can get involved with their organization: 1) Volunteer. They are looking for volunteers to work hands on with a crew performing home repair work. Individuals do not have to have specific handyman skills, training is available. All volunteers must be at least 18 years old. Additionally, they are looking for a licensed Plumber or

East Islip High School student Taylor Edel was recently recognized at the Huntington Camera Club’s 29th annual High School Photography Competition, with her darkroom photograph earning an honorable mention. Edel’s work was selected from 1,262 entrants from 16 high schools across Long Island.

Held since 1991, this Nikon-sponsored event honors outstanding high school photographers. Edel received a certificate, cash award and an Ambassador Coin keepsake medallion, created by Nikon to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the company.

“The photo was taken from the first roll of film that Taylor shot last fall,” said photographer teacher Joy Taylor. “Her assignment was texture, and this print stood out to me immediately as an exceptional darkroom print. I loved the simple subject matter as well as the composition. The judges

Students in Lauren Ferlin’s AP Environmental Science class at East Islip High School recently participated in the Seatuck Environmental Association’s bobwhite quail program.

For approximately 23 days, the students monitored the progress of 12 quail eggs in an incubator, after

which seven of the eggs successfully hatched.

The quail were kept in the classroom during the next few weeks and brought home with students on the weekends. The quail were then returned to Seatuck for release.

“In the wild, quail have very high mortality rates and this program gives

Getting With The Quail Program the quail population a chance to be successful,” said Ferlin. “An additional benefit to the ecosystem is that quail eat ticks, so by reestablishing the quail population we are introducing a natural predator at Seatuck and the number of ticks will be reduced without the use of chemical pesticides.”

NACCARATO EARNS HIS EAGLE SCOUT BADGE - Frank Dominick ULTIMATE FRISBEE - The Bay Shore High School Physical Education teachers Naccarato, III, East Islip, successfully completed his Eagle Board of Review on June held a Gym Class Hero Ultimate Frisbee competition for students. Congratulations to 4, 2019, officially making him the 85th Eagle Scout of Troop 205 of Great River, East champions Jack, Dean, Patrick, Ryan, Jarrett and Nolan!

Frank is a member of Troop 205, sponsored by the Great River Fire Department, under the direction of Scoutmaster Mark Businski. On his “Road to Eagle,” Frank has served Troop 205 as Assistant Senior Patrol Leader of Troop Guides, Patrol Leader, Assistant Patrol Leader, Quartermaster, and a Troop Guide – where he assists his younger Scouts in their Rank Advancements. Frank also serves as a Den Chief, working with Cub Scouts and their Leaders from Cub Scout Pack 205 in East Islip. Frank was also elected by his fellow Scouts to be a member of the Order of the Arrow – Scouting’s Honorary Camping Society.

Habitat For Humanity Build South Oaks Hospital employees participated in a Habitat for Humanity build in Central Islip on June 28. The home was being constructed for a single mother of two teenage boys.

The South Oaks team consisted of Carolyn Sweetapple, PhD, RN, CPA, the hospital’s executive director, as well as other senior leadership staff including physicians, nurses and social workers. Despite the scorching sun and high humidity, the team’s spirits

were lifted knowing that they were helping a family in need.

“We want to increase our visibility in the community and give back to the people we serve,” said Dr. Sweetapple. “Participating in this home-building project also provided our hospital staff with an opportunity to get to know one another outside of the workplace in a different environment.

In lifting heavy lumber and helping to build the upper floor of the home, we

realized that the sum of our parts – each of us working together – was greater than one.”

“It is our mission to look after the mental health and well-being of each of our patients,” said Dr. Sweetapple.

“By participating in a community service project with Habitat for Humanity, it is a reminder about how having the security of a home provides children with a much-needed, stable BOE RECOGNIZES MIDDLE SCHOOL TEACHER - At its last meeting, the environment.”

Bay Shore Board of Education recognized Bay Shore Middle School teacher Amy Nardone. Ms. Nardone has been recognized throughout her career for her dedication to Bay Shore’s students. This year, she was recognized as a New York State Teacher of Excellence by Senator Phil Boyle.

Islip Middle School students in the EXCEL program recently had the chance to improve their speaking skills and discuss finding future careers with motivational speaker and Strategy of Success founder Brian Cohen as part of the ongoing “Inventing Self” series of inspirational guest lectures.

Cohen, who partnered with Communication Strategy

Group to form the Long Island Speakers Bureau, a company that provides professional presenters, also does everything from stand-up comedy and radio hosting to communication coaching and singing with an orchestra.

He told the students, “If you love what you do, from a career standpoint, you never have to go to work, because you’re always doing

what you want to do, which sounds nice, but how do you make that truly work?”

Cohen asked them if any of them knew what they wanted to do for a future career and discussed the law of attraction.

“You will attract things that are appropriate to what you whatever your goal is,” he said. “It’s a concept, a theory more than a law, but it really works.”
