Inspiration 101 I recently had the opportunity to speak to a small group of high school students with an interest in writing during a one-week digital journalism camp held at Hofstra University. Not quite sure what to expect, I brought samples of our newspaper and magazine, along with a brief bio of myself, my career trajectory thus far, and a handful of anecdotes to share with the group. As it turned out, all that information filled up precisely ten minutes of what was to be a nearly hourlong presentation.

Fortunately, there were several curious students among the crowd, and their questions kept the dialogue going for quite some time afterward. Most often, the queries centered on this very column, how long I had been writing it {first column published: July 27th, 2005}, how many I had accumulated to this point {roughly 675, give or take, as the number seems to fluctuate each time I dive into the archives - head scratching, I know}, and how I am able to come up with original topics each week.

That was a tough one to pinpoint. Mostly, I draw from my own personal experiences for the initial inspiration - observations of my surroundings, a quote I am particularly fond of, a bit of current events that seems worthy of mention. Clearly, there is no particular format; merely a free flow of thoughts that somehow manifests itself into words on a page, with a message that readers can (hopefully) relate to in their own unique ways.

Some followup questions included my favorite topics through the years {my Q&A with Don Mattingly immediately came to mind}, as well as the most difficult to write {the many memoriam-type pieces I have put together following the passings of several family members and close friends, at once heartfelt and healing}. Perhaps my favorite question though, was the one from the quiet young man in the corner who thoughtfully raised his hand to ask, “Do you ever start writing a piece and then decide you just don’t like it midway through?”

Yes. Absolutely. 100% YES. The fact is, no matter how much of a passion I or anyone else might have for writing, it’s nearly impossible to have each and every article turn out to be a winner.

There are those topics you are initially inspired by that seem to trail off halfway down the page, leaving you with a bit of a blank slate to fill. There are those you perhaps weren’t that passionate about to begin with, yet felt a sort of obligation to take a stab at. In these cases, as I explained to the class, it’s often best to scrap the entire concept and go back to the drawing board. After all, if the words aren’t holding your own attention, how can you expect readers to remain engaged?

As with most things, recognizing a flaw and attempting to correct it is an integral part of the process. This is how we learn, and ultimately grow, whether age 15 or 35. There is no limit to our capacity for improvement.

Practice may not always lead to perfection, but it can surely bring you closer to a finished product you can be proud of.

Islip High School’s most recent graduates had a chance to connect with their roots on June 19th, participating in the third annual visit to Wing Elementary School for a walk through the halls in their caps and gowns. Led by the Buccaneers mascot, the seniors paraded out to the playground, where

Long Island Brain Tumor Walk Team, Cal’s Crusaders is sponsoring a comedy fundraiser at Governor’s Comedy Club on August 12th. Proceeds from the tickets sold by Cal’s Crusaders team members in addition to a 50/50 and basket raffle will benefit the National Brain Tumor Society. Showtime will be at 7 p.m. Doors open at 5:30 and those planning on attending the event are asked to be there by 6:30.

Cal’s Crusaders is a team formed to honor the memory of long time North Wantagh resident, Cal Kitay.

Cal was diagnosed with a grade 4 glioblastoma in June of 2011. Although the brain tumor was removed, due to allergic reactions with the chemotherapy drug, treatment had to cease and the aggressive tumor returned a year after Cal’s initial diagnosis, this time in an inoperable part of the brain. He passed away a month later; just three days shy of his 67th birthday. Cal’s family and friends came together as Cal’s Crusaders for the inaugural Long Island Brain Tumor Walk in 2014 For years the National

Brain Tumor Society has hosted events such as walks, runs, freezes, and rides to raise awareness of disease, to raise money for better treatments, and to connect the brain tumor community. 2014 was the first year Long Island hosted its own walk which was a total success. This year the Long Island Brain Tumor Walk will be held September 15th at Jones Beach.

The National Brain Tumor Society is the largest nonprofit organization dedicated to the brain tumor community in the United States and is rated as a 4-star charity on the Charity Navigator website.

tumor. Although 550,000 are benign, 138,000 are malignant and more than 69,000 others will be diagnosed this year.

This is why the National Brain Tumor Society is fiercely committed to finding better treatments, and ultimately a cure, for people living with a brain tumor today and anyone who will be diagnosed tomorrow. This means effecting change in the system at all levels.

At East Islip’s Timber Point Elementary School, the annual “On Our Way to JFK” celebration on June 13th found 142 second-graders singing together and sharing their dreams for the future as they prepared to move

up to third grade at John F. Kennedy Elementary School.

Music teacher Kathy Carter led the students in performances of “Hello Around the World,” “This Land Is Your Land,” “It’s a Small World” and “Adios,

Amigos!”

“There was not a dry eye in the house,” said Principal Danielle Naccarato, “and watching them shine made me feel extremely proud to be their principal.”

Seal of Biliteracy Islip High School recently recognized 2018 graduate and salutatorian Madeline Marconi as the inaugural recipient of the Islip School District Seal of Biliteracy. The prestigious Seal of Biliteracy project was piloted in Islip this year for the first time, with Marconi as the sole candidate.

Marconi presented her extensively researched Spanish-language project on her ancestral land of El Salvador on June 8 in the high school’s community room in front of a rigorous committee of Islip educators, who then evaluated her project and awarded her with a Seal of Biliteracy certificate and

medal.

“Although it took several months of hard work, I am so incredibly proud to receive the Seal of Biliteracy, because it not only demonstrates all of the effort I have put towards receiving this award, but it also conveys my love for language,” said Marconi.

“Madeline not only met the criteria established by the New York State Department of Education and our district, she also exceeded the expectation of the evaluating committee during her culminating project presentation,” said Priscilla Zarate, the district’s ENL and world language coordinator.

I congratulate her for this extraordinary accomplishment and for having successfully attained the Seal of Biliteracy.”

This September, thousands of individuals nationwide will join together in the battle against childhood cancer and other life-threatening diseases by participating in the Long Island St. Jude Walk/Run to End Childhood Cancer.

Massapequa is one of 65 cities nationwide helping raise funds and awareness during Childhood Cancer Awareness Month.

In Massapequa, the St. Jude Walk/Run to End Childhood Cancer will take place September 16th, at Westfield Sunrise Mall.

Because of generous donors and events like the St. Jude Walk/Run to End Childhood Cancer, families never receive a bill from St. Jude for treatment, travel, housing or food – because all a family should worry about is helping their child live. Treatments invented at St. Jude have helped

push the overall childhood cancer survival rate from 20 percent to more than 80 percent since it opened more than 50 years ago. St. Jude won’t stop until no child dies from cancer. With the support of participants, donors and more, we can end childhood cancer together.

Superstar entertainer Fergie took center stage last week at a private benefit concert at Old Westbury Gardens that raised more than $3 million to support research initiatives at Northwell Health’s Feinstein Institute for Medical Research.

“As Northwell continues to grow, philanthropy is even more important to fulfilling our mission of improving the health and the lives of the people in

our communities who rely on us,” said Brian T. Lally, senior vice president and chief development officer, Northwell Health.

Led by its collaborative research enterprise, Northwell Health is reimagining how to treat illness, cure disease and keep people well through innovation. For over 20 years, Feinstein Institute researchers have made important discoveries in oncology, autoimmunity,

Rock-n-Roll U (RNRU), a music school that teaches children and adults of all abilities, saw their teen student band, Rock Candy, kick off Arnoldstock, the most fabulous yearly music festival in southwest Suffolk.
