Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, Inc. (ADRC) is pleased to announce that Bryan Proctor, a Huntington resident and a physical education teacher, will lead a team of swimmers in the 12th Annual Distant Memories Swim on Tuesday, July 28th, in order to draw attention to this devastating disease that impacts over 60,000 families here on Long Island. In its lifetime, The Swim has raised in excess of $100,000 for those with Alzheimer’s disease and their unpaid caregivers.

Opening ceremonies are expected to begin promptly at 9 a.m. Mr. Proctor and his teammates will take to the water at 9:15 a.m.

Cliff “Kip” Johannesen, who at one point was paralyzed and in a wheelchair but now is able to walk with the assistance of canes is offering services as a U.S. Coast Guard Licensed Captain and P.A.D.I Master Diver to people with disabilities in the Long Island/NYC Area.

With his boat, docked in Lindenhurst, he is volunteering his spare time to take children with disabilities (along with a parent or guardian) or disabled veterans on fishing, snorkeling and boating trips in the Great South Bay.

So Operation: Explore NYC on Foot was a success.

Mostly. This time, we decided to mix a little mass transit in to maximize our time spent experiencing the cultural offerings. You would think that would have eliminated some of the mileage; but, at day’s end, my handy app determined that we had still somehow managed to cover 25,695 steps, or 10.71 miles.

Just a walk in the park.

Literally.

The thing about mass transit is that it doesn’t travel through Central Park. Shocking, I know. So, between our two trips clear across the entire width, plus plenty of aimless meandering down paths that, apparently, don’t travel in any particular direction, well, the miles definitely added up.

Luckily, this time, I was smart enough to wear comfortable, albeit flat, shoes.

No unscheduled Duane Reade stops for us this time around!

But still, after about eight hours of standing, walking, climbing… the searing pain in the ball of your foot is pretty much the same, flip flops or no.

By the time we had explored Strawberry Fields, The Dakota, Belvedere Castle, the Shakespeare Garden and the Great Lawn, it was time for a snack. This was followed by a solid three hours perusing the European paintings of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, circling through gallery after gallery, until those incredibly uncomfortable-looking benches began to look pretty cushy.

Back through the Park we headed, this time passing the Bethesda Terrace and

Fountain, the Bow Bridge, and winding up at the famed Central Park Boathouse Restaurant. Knowing we were cutting it a little close, with no reservation, we hovered hopefully right as the dinner service began. Thankfully, we landed a prime spot overlooking the lake.

As we finished up, we had precisely 45 minutes to make our way out of the Park, across to the other side and down about a dozen blocks to Lincoln Center, where we had tickets to the American Ballet Theatre’s production of Cinderella. Doable. Sort of.

As we ran across the plaza to the Metropolitan Opera House, change of shoes in hand, the clock struck 7:30 p.m. Inside, a long line stretched through the lobby with dozens of patrons waiting at the Will Call window to pick up their tickets. Just. Made. It.

at Asharoken Beach and swim across Northport Bay to Knollwood Beach in Huntington - a distance of approximately 2.0 nautical miles (less than 3 miles).

The swim will also help raise funds for Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, Inc. through sponsorships and corporate donors. The goal is to raise $20,000 to help support services and programs for Long Island families coping with the challenges of Alzheimer’s disease.

This issue is very close to Mr. Proctor, as his grandfather and aunt passed away from Alzheimer’s disease.

He is a role model for the youth of our country,” states Mary Ann MalackRagona, Executive Director/Chief Executive Officer of Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, Inc. “He has continuously expressed the sentiment that he wants to raise awareness about this deadly disease and help families who live on Long Island.”

Elite Inductees Islip Middle School recently honored its elite scholars as the school’s National Junior Honor Society inducted 70 students – 12 eighthgraders and 58 seventhgraders – who have worked hard to achieve high standards.

To be eligible, students must have attained an overall GPA of 94 or above and demonstrated qualities

of good citizenship. The students and attending families were joined

by Dr. Linda Lippman, the district’s assistant superintendent for administrative services, as well as Board of Education President Mary M. Dennis, Principal Timothy Martin and NJHS advisers Laura Greco and Jessica Kirsch.

“It is with extreme effort, endless hours of studying

Job Search Boot Camp

Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter is pleased to announce that the Town of Islip will again host a Job Search Boot Camp – a series of training classes aimed at providing the right tools for landing a job in a tough economy. This program will be offered to residents of Islip Town who are either looking for a job or looking for a career move.

The Job Search Boot Camp breaks the daunting task of job searching into nine simplified topics for registrants. Each topic provides the necessary skills to attain employment via networking. These skills are considered fundamental during a strong economy, but are even more important during tough economic times. The training is sponsored primarily through the Town’s Industrial Development Agency (IDA) and will be provided without any costs to taxpayers.

“Local government has a responsibility to foster a healthy economic environment, and while we

have been very successful in attracting new business to Islip, we must also do the best we can to help our residents who are looking to enter the workforce,” said Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter. “The Job Search Boot Camp is an outstanding program designed to assist job seekers with identifying employment opportunities right here in the vibrant and thriving Town of Islip. We believe this program will provide insightful information as well as valuable guidance and direction to all who participate,” Supervisor Carpenter added.

“Throwback Thursday” was the theme for Islip High School’s 2015 postprom, an imaginative and ambitious event that helped make the attending seniors’ last night at the school a memorable one.

For the past 15 years, the post-prom event has been a group effort between the Islip Drug Education Awareness – Compass IDEA Task Force Coalition, the district and community organizations.

“Thanks to the wonderful work of many volunteers and generous donations from the community, this year’s post-prom was a great success that will be cherished by all who attended,” said organizer Ken Phalen.

Upon arrival, the students were greeted by a “time tunnel” and walked past a clock that spun time backwards, taking them back to 1997, the year they were born. As they entered the school, members of the sponsoring Islip Elks Club and parent volunteers welcomed the students, guiding them along a giant “Game of Life” in the lobby that led to the cafeteria. They passed a life-sized game of Operation, giant Legos and crayons, and huge alphabet blocks spelling out “Class of 2015” – all serving as fun reminders

of things that happened before senior year – as well as henna tattoo, candy bar and ice cream stations; a photo booth complete with props; and huge screens where students could play “Super Smash Bros.” and “Mario Kart.”

Images of pop culture and historic events that defined their youth were visible everywhere, and magazine covers, movie posters and information about the changes caused by social media were spread around the auditorium lobby.

Serving as the main stage of the post-prom, the school cafeteria had been utterly transformed, with long black curtains on the decorated walls and tables laden with floral centerpieces and large Mylar balloons donated by sponsors Chazz Florist of Islip. Bringing back many fond memories for the students, nostalgic scenes around the cafeteria included a movie area complete with a “Harry Potter” exhibit, the doors from “Monsters Inc.,” the balloon-covered house from “ Up” and a toy box filled with “Toy Story” characters; an area filled with TV favorites, including an entire setting from “SpongeBob Square Pants”; and a gaming area featuring giant Nintendo Game Boys and larger-

than-life video game boxes hung from the ceiling.

At the center of the cafeteria was a dance floor with special lighting, a DJ and a game show where students could compete for prizes. Throughout the night, raffle giveaways were handed out to attending seniors, including gift cards, flat screen televisions, a laptop computer and the grand prize, a Kia Rio car, which was won by Melanie Mayer.

Meanwhile, the students were treated to a delicious breakfast that included custom-made omelets, egg sandwiches, cinnamon rolls, drinks and desserts.

“It was awesome,” said Ethan Fields, the valedictorian of the class.

“I had heard about postprom for years, but I had to go to see how great it actually was.”

Julia Harkin, a guest from another district, expressed amazement. “We didn’t have anything like a post-prom at my school’s prom, so we ended up just staying at the venue for a long time,” said Harkin, “I would have loved to have had a post-prom at my school – this was so much fun!”

The first stop is at Palo-mine Equestrian Center in Islandia, which is a non-profit organization that offers therapeutic equine program that facilitates growth, learning and healing in adults and children with mental or physical disabilities. Each guest will be asked to participate in an equine activity that is done at Pal-O-Mine to learn and understand what they do at their facility, however no riding is involved.

Guests will be amazed at how the horses can sense the difference in children or adults needs and how they are a tremendous help for them and their given ailments. Many of the horses in their care were rescued from dire situations and now providing incredible loving care and therapy to people.

After the inspirational morning at Pal-O-Mine, the second stop of the tour is at Baiting Hollow Farm Vineyard and Horse Rescue in Baiting Hollow. Guests will soak in the countryside for a gourmet lunch and after sample three wine tastings while overlooking the horse rescue and sanctuary on the premises.

After lunch, guests will enjoy a guided tour of the

absolutely stunning horse rescue farm to learn why this rescue was started, meet the beautiful horses like Angel and Mirage, learn their stories – and how they became the namesakes of the vineyards most popular wines.

On the way back home the bus will stop at a favorite farm stand that has locally harvested seasonal produce grown on Long Island’s north shore in Suffolk County.

A portion of the proceeds for this event will go to help both Pal-O-Mine and Baiting Hollow Farm Vineyard and Horse Rescue.

Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter and Councilman Steve Flotteron were joined by Congressman Peter King, officials of the New York City Police Department, and the family of late New York City Police Detective Tommy Merriweather for a ceremony to mark the renaming of a portion of Spur Drive North in Bay Shore in memory of Merriweather.

The June 26th renaming ceremony honored Detective Merriweather, who died at 49 from pancreatic cancer that resulted from exposure to toxins at the World Trade Center site following the September 11th, 2001 terrorist attacks.

Merriweather and his wife made their home on Spur Drive North in Bay Shore, which was renamed “Det. 1st Grade Tommy Merriweather Drive.”

“On behalf of Islip Town and all the members of the Islip Town Board, I am pleased and proud to pay special tribute to the late NYPD Detective Tommy Merriweather and his family for his dedication and service to the New York City Police Department,

the United States Army, the Army National Reserves, the New York National Guard, the Boy Scouts of America and as a first responder and survivor of the September 11th, 2001 attacks from which he suffered serious illness and an untimely death,” said Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter. “We wish to remember Detective Merriweather and all he did to serve our country and community by renaming a portion of this Bay Shore street Det. 1st Grade Tommy Merriweather Drive.”

Supervisor Carpenter added, “We know that all who pass this sign will be reminded of Tommy’s devotion to his family, his community, and his country...a true role model for generations to come.”

Not only a distinguished member of the NYPD, Detective Merriweather also was a decorated member of the U.S. Army, and a Scoutmaster for Sagtikos District/Troop 43 of the Boy Scouts of America. Following his service in the Army, he joined the 77th Precinct of the NYPD.He also served in the Narcotics Division,

Manhattan North Narcotics West, Strategic and Tactical Command Narcotics Operations, Narcotics Division Manhattan North Initiative, Narcotics Division Bronx Initiative, as well as the Fleet Services Division.

Merriweather retired in 2009after 20 years on the force with the rank of Detective First Grade. He died in 2013.

Councilman Flotteron said, “It is my hope that this street will serve as a reminder for our future generations of what a hero looks like. Not all heroes wear capes. They live among us and they are our neighbors. There is no doubt that people will look up at this sign and ask, “Who was Tommy Merriweather?” And what they will find out is that he was a normal guy, with a loving family, who went above and beyond the call of duty in service to his country and to his fellow man.”

The ceremony included an NYPD color guard and bagpiper along with officials of the Army National Guard and Boy Scouts from Troop 43.

Teen Safety Driver Courses The Suffolk County Police Department is again offering its free “Crash Course in Crash Avoidance” classes for teen drivers between the ages of 16 and 19. course teaches new drivers how to anticipate and avoid dangerous road situations.

Each session features a short classroom lecture, followed by a live demonstration on the Emergency Vehicles Operations Course (EVOC).
