True Colors mostly. Of course, some consideration for how things come across to others should always be given. Think before you speak, pause before you act; it is always more advisable to attempt to diffuse a situation rather than add fuel to the fire.

Especially with the current state of affairs in this nation, more care needs to be taken to respect one another, to pause a moment and appreciate the fact that, no matter the differences in our political, religious or societal views, we are all cut from the same cloth – and a little thing called humanity goes a long way.

Whether engaging face to face, via text message or some other written method designed to foster

What would you do if no one was watching? What would you say if no one was listening? These little nuances are what can be designated as one’s “true colors,” those qualities we may take pains to hide from others on a daily basis, but that, when faced with circumstances beyond our control, shine through.

This isn’t to say that they are automatically negative, or even need to be hidden.

They are simply part of the layers which make up our individual personalities, which cause us to react in certain ways to situations in our own unique style.

To each his or her own,

miscommunication, or – best of all – on the pages of various social media sites which seem to double as a breeding ground for contentious exchanges between so-called “friends,” common courtesy should not be dispensed with.

So, take heed the next time someone is looking to engage. Draw in a deep breath, form a coherent thought, give it a second… and decide whether expressing your opinion is worth the potential repercussions. Sometimes, those true colors are not so black and white as we may think.

Remember, when you mix all the colors of the rainbow together, you are left with a gray, muddled mess.

Four members of East Islip High School’s strong softball squad earned postseason honors. Juniors Jackie Carty and Courtney Greene and sophomore Alise Colandro were named All-County athletes, with Greene also named to the All-Long Island first team, while freshman Ashley Benvengo was named AllLeague and League IV Rookie of the Year.

“I am very proud of these four athletes,” said coach Jason McGowan, who was named League IV Coach of the Year. “They put in the work during the offseason, and it showed. It’s an honor to coach them.”

Greene, a pitcher and the team’s junior captain, had an outstanding season, leading the Lady Redmen to the Suffolk County final after losing in the second round of the playoffs.

Behind Greene’s solid pitching performances, East Islip rattled off five straight wins to reach the final. As a pitcher, Greene won 17 games and set a new school record in striking out 176 batters in 155 innings. She notched her 500th career strikeout this season as well, finishing the year with 518 career strikeouts, also a school record.

According to McGowan, Greene’s season was highlighted by an epic matchup with EastportSouth Manor in the semifinal, in which she pitched 12 innings, struck out 13 batters and hit a home run that cut the lead in half. On offense, Greene batted .327 (.375 in the playoffs) and scored five home runs (including four playoff homers), 32 hits and 27 RBI. Greene has committed to play softball for Molloy College starting in the fall of 2017.

Colandro, the team’s catcher and leadoff hitter, had a breakout season after earning League IV

Rookie of the Year last year.

According to McGowan, Colandro had one of the best offensive seasons in the history of East Islip softball, batting .435 while compiling a school-record 47 hits. She also scored 26 runs and stole 19 bases, and in the playoffs, batted .394 with 13 hits and eight runs.

“Alise caught every inning of every game this season, which is a credit to her toughness and her resiliency,” said McGowan.

“Alise was clutch during the playoffs and was the catalyst of our county finalist team. When she got going, the team got going.

She handled our three different pitchers this season with ease and was a vocal leader on the field.

We look forward to Alise leading us again next year.”

Carty, playing shortstop for the first time, and batting third, led East Islip with six home runs, tying a school record, including three in the playoffs. She also scored 27 runs, walked 21 times (another school record) and had 27 RBI. With no seniors and only

two juniors on the team, the four-year varsity player emerged as a leader on and off the field.

“Jackie was our emotional leader and a major factor in the team’s success,” said McGowan.

“Her hustle, performance in the clutch and desire to be great are what makes her so special.”

A three-sport athlete, Carty has committed to play soccer at Molloy College in the fall of 2017.

“I am really happy to have won the poster design contest,” said Watts. “I worked really hard on it. It was challenging and a bit out of my comfort zone, but I was excited to try something new.”

His original poster design, illustrating the process of composting, was done in colored pencil on 18x24 poster board.

Watts drew renderings of compost and used his slogan “Recycling To

Beauty: From This to This” to explain how compost can create beautiful flowers and fauna.

“I am proud of Chris,” said art teacher Daniel Figliozzi.

“Winning this contest is a great achievement. He worked really hard all year on his art and continues to push himself. I am excited to work with him again next year.”

A concerted yearlong effort by student clubs at Islip High School led to the donation of Brady Buggy to Stony Brook Children’s Hospital’s cancer center.

The Brady Buggy, a mobile cart that allows sick children to leave their rooms and move around the center with their IVs attached to the handle of the cart, was presented to the hospital on June 21st.

The campaign, led by Joan Smith on behalf of Islip’s American Legion

Rusy-Bohm Post 411’s Suffolk County Ladies Auxiliary, collected aluminum can tabs to recycle to raise funds to purchase the buggy.

Among the high school organizations participating were the Islip High School Junior Chamber of Commerce Club and adviser Renee Clock, the Interact Club and adviser Karen Volkmann, and the Student Union and adviser Ann Gordon.

“Knowing that our

students and staff were part of this project is rewarding,” said Clock.

“To watch a little boy at the center get wheeled around by his grandmother and be able to play in the playroom was priceless. I am thankful to my colleagues and the students at Islip High School, and also our community members, who helped contribute to the Ladies Auxiliary’s Children and Youth Project this year.”

After the speeches were over and the caps had flown and the new graduates have the type of community that becomes stronger when had filed out to meet their families, the sun began to set faced with loss and struggle. What holds us together is as they said their goodbyes and began a new and surely stronger than what pulls us apart. I am grateful to have equally extraordinary chapter. such happy memories. Proud in purple and white, Islip High School’s Class of 2016 marched into the stadium for their June 23rd commencement ceremony to the traditional strains of “Pomp and Circumstance,” played by the Islip High School Wind Ensemble and Concert Band and conducted

by Steven Campanella. Savannah Beckford sang a strong rendition of “The Star-Spangled Banner,” while the school’s chorus ensemble performed “Best Day of My Life.”

Board of Education Vice President Philip Dineen, whose sons, senior class officers Schuyler Dineen and Sean Dineen, were among the graduates, talked about NASA’s successful 1960s moon-landing mission and the challenges it faced, noting the foundational qualities for professional excellence of discipline, competence, confidence, responsibility, toughness and teamwork. “Whatever career path you choose, make it your passion,” he said.

“Remember, you will be challenged just as the NASA team was challenged. NASA was faced with setbacks, but failure was not an option with NASA, and failure is not an option for all of you.”

“Whenever we spend so much time in one place at a very crucial stage in our development as adults, it is inevitable that we will meet people who are near and dear to us,” said salutatorian Brian Lithen, lauding school leaders and staff for their dedication and integrity.
