with Jamie Lynn Ryan This past 4th of July weekend, my friend and I decided to take a road trip out to Montauk Point. Having recently realized that we had never been to this summer hotspot during the actual summer months, a busy holiday weekend seemed like the ideal time to go.

Armed with a handful of late 90’s teen pop CDs and my trusty iPhone navigation system, we headed out. Of course, Long Island traffic is a force to be reckoned with on any normal day; add to it a two-lane road with speed limits ranging from 55 to 25 mph, throw in a few unfamiliar tourist types - and you have yourself a solid two-hour journey to contend with, at least.

At one point, as traffic

crept to a complete standstill, my dear Siri piped up and suggested an “alternate” route, one that would allegedly save 25 minutes from the journey. Not having had the best of luck in the past with these detours, I was initially hesitant. But, looking ahead at the long line of vehicles, I figured, what was the harm.

Approximately 45 minutes later, and two side trips through the residential roads of Bridgehampton, and then East Hampton, we emerged back on Montauk Highway, back in the same line of traffic.

So much for that.

After (finally) arriving at the famous Lobster Roll luncheonette, we were met with the expected hour-long

wait, somewhat alleviated by spending time taking pictures in front of the original sign and marveling at some of the patrons attempting to navigate the pebble-filled parking lot in high heels. The food was, as always, worth the wait - and we promptly decided that dinner would most likely not be necessary, as we couldn’t imagine eating another thing for at least another three days or so.

We finished up and headed on the next leg of our journey, the famous lighthouse, the self-proclaimed “End of the World.”

Last year, he established the Next Generation Advisory Council, which brings together residents in their 20s and 30s to discuss issues facing millennials and weigh in on proposals that come before the Legislature. In addition, this summer marks the third year of the new Page Program, which the Presiding Officer established to give college students a first-hand look into how local government operates.

As part of his continued efforts to engage and retain Suffolk County youth, Legislature Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory today announced the launch of the Distinguished Youth Award program, which promotes and recognizes achievement, initiative and service in Suffolk County youth.

The program is open to county residents between the ages of 13 and 18. Registrants will work with local officials over the course of a year to lay out plans and goals that touch on volunteerism, personal development, exploration of Suffolk County, and physical fitness.

Presiding Officer Gregory made the announcement during a press conference at Blydenburgh County Park in Smithtown alongside young people who have already registered for the program. Also joining him were two of his colleagues, 9th District Legislator Monica Martinez and 12th District Legislator Leslie Kennedy.

“The goal in establishing this program is to encourage young people to become well-rounded and engaged in local issues and initiatives,” said Presiding Officer Gregory. “Our young people are our future. This program is one way to build a foundation on which these young adults can continue to develop a connection to their communities, to understand their needs, and to explore solutions. We are encouraging them to be leaders whose roots are firmly planted in Suffolk County.”

As they got ready to close out the school year, Mary G. Clarkson School presented its annual VIP (Very Important Person) Day for all of its first graders.

Grandparents, greatgrandparents, aunts and uncles arrived and were welcomed with a delicious breakfast of fruit, muffins, cake, bagels, juice and coffee. Ms. Garcia, Mary G. Clarkson’s Principal, acted as Master of Ceremonies as the first graders united to perform in a delightful tale

of “How Does Your Garden Grow?”

Led in song and movement by Mary G. Clarkson’s Music Teacher, Mr. Schecker, it all started with Planting Seeds by the children of Mrs. Martin and Ms. Tramposch’s classes, followed by We Are the Loveliest Flowers of Mrs. Aponte/Mrs. Swank and Mrs. Rebore’s classes. They were of course, overtaken

by Weeds Rule! to rap music by Mrs. Slattery and Mrs. Surian’s classes, but there was no need to fret

as the Garden Hoedown of Mr. Cruickshank’s classes put them back in their place.

The added talents of the storytellers, rap and dance artists all contributed to the charm of the story.

Afterwards, the VIP’s were all invited to attend special activities in the classrooms, where the children had the opportunity to share their displays of the end products of their hard work, such as plantings, journal writings and poetry readings.

Bay Shore/Brightwaters Girl Scout Troop 104 has reached a major milestone and donated lifesaving equipment to the community. The 8th grade troop has been together since kindergarten and recently achieved the ambitious goal they set for the coveted Silver Award.

Paying it Forward

Throughout the school year, Bay Shore High School Peer Support has been running a “Pay It Forward” initiative.

Students brainstormed ways in which they could do something kind for a stranger. The person who

received the kind act was given a tag explaining the program and asked to do something nice for someone else and pass the tag along.

The “Open Up the Doors to Reading” Scholastic Book Fair Contest at the Bay Shore Middle School is a wonderful way to celebrate not only reading, but also creativity. Thirtyone doors were decorated during the secnd annual contest, with entries featuring classics such as Charlotte’s Web and The Wizard of Oz to contemporary favorites by author Kwame Alexander.

Each year, the advisory students work with their teachers to brainstorm the

theme or book for their door. Together they design, draw, color, cut and tape their masterpieces over a number of weeks. The door-decorating contest culminates in the spring Scholastic Book Fair. Mrs. Holzweiss, the school librarian, creates a Google form so the students may vote for their favorite door during their lunch periods.

This year, the students voted for Miss Makely’s advisory for their Harry Potter themed door.

Scholastic visited also, and chose Mrs. Capolongo’s Jack and the Beanstalk door as the most creative.

Each advisory student and their teacher received $10 of Scholastic dollars to spend at the book fair.

Pronto of Long Island, Inc. (Pronto), is seeking volunteers to help them in their warehouse, and Thrift Center.

Pronto is a not-for-profit, Community Outreach Center, serving the most vulnerable children and families living in the townships of Islip, Smithtown, Babylon, and neighboring communities.

Volunteers are needed

Monday through Friday, from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., to help unpack food deliveries to their warehouse in Bay Shore.

Candidates should be on good health and be able to lift 20 pounds. In addition, volunteers are needed in their Thrift Center to sort through clothing donations, and stocking the Center.

“At Pronto we’re always

trying to find different ways of helping the community,” said Kathy Bennett, President, Pronto. “In order for us to keep doing that, we’re asking that the community help us,” she continued.

BRINGING GREETINGS - Students in the World of Independence (WIN) program at Bay Shore High School are helping fellow students and community members spread greetings to loved ones. The students started their own greeting card company, WIN/ WOW Greetings. With the assistance of their teachers, they create blank greeting cards for birthdays, holidays and special events. Keep an eye out for their designs!

Pronto of Long Island, Inc. (Pronto), in partnership with Suffolk County Legislator Monica Martinez, Suffolk County District Attorney Tom Spota’s office, the Brentwood School District, Eat Smart NY, and the Cornell Cooperative Extension, is excited to announce that they are offering a free summer program focusing on: healthy eating, environmental science and water conservation, botany and consumer education and writing.

This summer program will take place Monday through Thursday, July 5th to August 16th from

8:30 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. at Pronto of Long Island, 128 Pine Aire Drive in Bay Shore. This free program is open to students in fifth to eighth grades, and enrollment is open until July 17th.

As part of the program, students will be taken on educational field trips, treated to guest speakers, nutrition workshops, and environmental education.

The goal is to introduce and develop knowledge of planting, farming, and maintaining sustainable food sources. Children will also be receiving free breakfast and lunch.

“We’re thrilled to be able to provide this

program to the children of the community,” said Kathy Bennett, President, Pronto. “We’d also like to thank our partners in this endeavor for realizing the need to provide these types of programs to the community we serve,” she continued.

This program serves middle school at risk kids at a time when they need positive supervision and structure to prevent gang influence and violence.

Generations Interact Continuing a new Islip tradition begun last year

Dressed in their purple and white caps and gowns,

the future alumni walked through the halls and around the playground, interacting with the younger students and reconnecting with their own educational past. To the delight of the children of Wing, the walkers this year included the high school’s Buccaneers mascot.

“We wanted to give our students the opportunity to visit the place where their educational journey began,” said Mosca. “This experience also gives our kindergarten and firstgrade students a glimpse into the future and a goal to strive for.”

I think many of the volunteers learned a great deal about people with developmental disabilities, and they really enjoyed planting alongside the residents of the homes.

Comcast Cares Day began in 2001 with 6,100 volunteers helping to improve about 100 community sites. For the third consecutive year, more than 100,000 volunteers worldwide – including employees, along with their families and friends and nonprofit partners – turned out to beautify neighborhoods, spruce up schools, plant trees, stock food banks and much more at 1,000 local projects in 23 countries.

Magic Aid Donation Last week, Adventureland’s Helping Hands Foundation donated $1,000 and a variety of magic tricks to Magic Aid, a nonprofit organization that teaches the children at Stony Brook Children’s Hospital magic. Founded by medical student David Elkin in 2007, Magic Aid helps relieve the stress children experience with hospitalization by performing and teaching magic to young patients.

Dedicated to bridging

magic and medicine through the use of magic therapy, David and his team are striving to enhance the quality of care provided to patients, one card trick at a time.

Funds were raised through Adventureland Employees’ Water Bottle Recycling Program, and matched by the Helping Hands Foundation. The donation will go towards training other doctors and Magic Aid members sleight of hand, and purchasing

tricks that the children can take home with them.

Fifty employees from Comcast NBCUniversal’s Advertising Sales Team volunteered recently at four ACLD community residences. ACLD (Adults and Children with Learning and Developmental Disabilities) is a nonprofit organization supporting children and adults with autism, learning and developmental disabilities.

The Comcast NBCUniversal employees volunteered their time and talents as part of Comcast Cares Day, an initiative in its 16th year, promoted by the media giant that gives back to local communities where their employees live and work. Employees spent the morning and afternoon gardening and cleaning up the garden beds at each of the homes.
