Adolescence can be a trying time for teenagers and their parents.

According to the American Psychological Association, parents and caregivers face an entirely new set of tasks to deal with the changing needs of children as they reach adolescence. The changes that accompany adolescence include physical, cognitive and social changes, and parents may need to adopt an entirely new approach to parenting as they deal with the changing needs of their children during their period in their lives. The APA notes that adolescents often crave greater independence and autonomy, and this desire is a natural part of their development process. It’s important that parents of adolescents find a way to maintain the familial bonds they and their children have developed up to this point, while also allowing increasingly mature teens a level of autonomy that can benefit them throughout their lives. According to clinical psychologist William Stixrud, Ph.D., decades of psychological research has shown that a lack of perceived control leads people to feel overwhelmed, helpless, hopeless, passive, and resigned. So adolescents who feel that they have control over the direction of their lives, feelings which can be strengthened when they are given some level of autonomy as teenagers, are less likely to feel overwhelmed, helpless, hopeless, passive, or resigned as adults.

Equity First Foundation (EFF) is a 501c3 nonprofit organization located here on Long Island. Rhonda Klch started this foundation with the mission to offer services, resources and programs to consumers and small businesses that are facing financial distress. Although the details of financial markets may not be necessary for everyone, a good understanding of everyday finances is needed to ensure your home, bank account and additional assets are protected as you go about your life.

This nonprofit is guided by a board of experts from the Long Island business community. They strive to educate the community so people can make financial decisions with knowledge and confidence. EFF provides financial education, literacy and best practices at low or no cost to individuals and groups from primary school through retirement and including life events.

Rhonda Klch, Executive Director of the Equity First Foundation has taken all necessary steps to get out of her comfort zone and attack COVID with her resources. As a women entrepreneur, she used her relationships, social media and community to power through this current pandemic.

In March of 2020, when the pandemic really started to hit hard, Rhonda, along with the assistance of her board members, united to find solutions for the community despite what was going on. Rhonda believed that even though EFF programs may be on hold, that did not mean the people of the community did not still need answers and help. She has worked endless hours for the sake of the families that need assistance and need a voice.

Since the pandemic Rhonda has either spearheaded or collaborated in many projects to help our community out. Here is an example of just a few: The Grab & Go 3,000 Event in Patchogue: Rhonda collaborated with business owner of local restaurant to provide over 3,000 hot meals to families in need.

Grab & Go Breakfast in Rocky Point: EFF collaborated with local bagel store owner, Edward Henry of Strathmore bagels and a few

sponsors, to give-away over 300 breakfasts to families in need.

6 Week Marathon: March 29th was the beginning of a 6 week marathon of assisting front line workers with food. EFF and Rhonda did a Go Fund Me with local bagel store owner, Edward Henry to supply St. Charles, Mather and Stony Brook Hospital food every night.

PPE Equipment Fundraiser: EFF collaborated with several Allstate Insurance offices to raise funds for PPE equipment. Over 2,000 masks were delivered to various hospitals, senior centers, nursing homes and fire districts.

Although EFF has switched their programs from in person to virtual, they have been well received. They continue to offer free financial counseling and outreach resources for numerous families on Long Island.

Miriam H. says, “Rhonda is a true professional that looks out for the best interest of her clients. She works hard at finding the best solutions and making her clients shine.

New York Health Hosts Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony Welcoming Family Practice Physician, Dr. Seodat

New York Health (NYHealth) is proud to announce the addition of one of Riverhead’s highestrated family physicians, Dr. Vishnudat Seodat. To celebrate the opening of his new locations, a ribboncutting ceremony was held Thursday, June 25, 2020, at 6144 Route 25 A, Suite #19, Wading River, NY 11792.

Dr. Seodat is board certified in family medicine and is excited to be a part of NY Health’s commitment to the highest quality of comprehensive care.

His passion for medicine represents an opportunity to bring NY Health’s inherent patient-centric focus to a new level by offering “medicine with a difference.” His expert approach to care encompasses the whole mind and body.

“As a child, I developed pneumonia which led to a house call from my family physician. The physician did not accept payment from my family for the appointment due to my less fortunate financial living conditions at the time,” Dr. Seodat said. Inspired by the physician’s compassion, Dr.

Seodat navigated his life so that he could become a doctor for everyone. “My journey began as a nurse and a pharmacist dispenser before traveling to New York to earn my degree in medicine.”

Dr. Seodat received a Bachelor of Science with a Minor in Healthcare Administration at St. Joseph’s College.

He attended La Universidad Tecnológica De Santiago where he received his Doctor of Medicine.

Following his MD, he completed his residency and served as Chief Resident at Southside Hospital. He continued at Southside as Assistant Director of their residency program where he educated residents while maintaining patient care and completing medical procedures.

Working alongside him for the past two years is Adult-Geri Nurse Practitioner, Catrina Grefe, MS, RN-BC, AGNP-C. As a Nurse Practitioner, Catrina manages the patient’s overall care, prescribing medications and treatments, conducting and interpreting diagnostic

tests, and treating both acute and chronic conditions. Catrina assists in performing procedures and educating patients on positive health-promoting lifestyle choices and disease, injury, and illness prevention. Catrina is excited to be joining NY Health with Dr. Seodat. “Patients can feel confident with me as their practitioner, and I am eager to deliver high-quality care to patients on the East End,” she said.

The Importance of Islip Elks Flag Day Ceremony

In July of 1908, the Grand Lodge of this order, in Dallas, Texas, then assembled, provided for the annual nationwide observance of “Flag Day” on the 14th of June in each year, in every lodge.

The Islip Elks Lodge 2533 ceremony at the American Legion Rusy-Bohm Post 411 was very patriotic.They were joined in celebration with veterans from the Post 411. Boy Scout troop 207 assisted in the presentation of the flags. The ceremony was presided over by Elks Exhalted Ruler Joe D’Angelo.

This years celebration was scaled down due to the COVID-19.

The purpose of this ceremony was to honor our country’s Flag, to celebrate the anniversary of its birth, and to recall the achievements attained beneath its folds.The fraternal aims of the Elks are to inculcate the principles of Charity, Justice, Brotherly Love and Fidelity; to promote the welfare and happiness of mankind; uphold our country and its laws: and the spirit of American

patriotism. The Elks teach love of country and of our countrymen and loyalty to our American way of life.

The Chaplain’s prayer states “...in this hour of patriotic observance of the birthday of the American Flag, we ask You bless our Flag, and the people of the United States. For all that our Flag represents, both at home and abroad, we thank Thee, and that through all our history as a nation, it has been an ensign of freedom, liberty and opportunity.... May this service bring us a sense of loyalty to our country ...”

The Boy Scouts presented the flags starting with the 1775, Pine Tree Flag which was adopted for all colonial vessels and was the banner carried by the Continental forces in the Battle of Bunker Hill.

The Southern colonies from 1776 to 1777, used the Snake Flag. In the latter part of 1775 there was a single flag for all thirteen colonies with thirteen stripes with the cross of St. George and St. Andrew which was raised over General Washington’s headquarters in Massachusetts. The next flag that was presented,

had thirteen stars and stripes because on June 14, 1777, Congress declared that this flag represent the United States. In 1795 two additional stars and Stripes were added. When Francis Scott Key saw that flag flying over Fort McHenry, on September 14, 1814 (in the War of 1812), he wrote the “Star Spangle Banner”.

The Congress, on July 14, 1818 made the number of stripes thirteen and twenty stars, and declared that a new star would be added for each state thereafter admitted. The next flag that was presented was the one with forty eight stars, that flew over this nation until just before the Vietnam War. The last flag presented was our present fifty star flag.

The American Flag is the heritage of people of the United States. The greatest significance of this Flag, lies in the influence it has in the hearts and minds of millions of people.

This Flag Day ceremony ended with the “Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag.”

Economic Opportunity Council Of Suffolk, Inc. Receives Federal Funding To Help Low Income Suffolk Residents The Economic Opportunity Council of Suffolk, Inc. (EOC of Suffolk) has received $1.7 million in federal funds to provide financial assistance to individuals and families facing economic hardships arising from COVID-19related disruptions.

The funds are being made available to eligible Suffolk County residents

who have either lost their jobs, became temporarily unemployed, or faced financial difficulties because of the pandemic.

The funds originate from the federal Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act – commonly known as the CARES Act – which is providing $41 billion in funding to supplement the nationwide

Community Services Block Grant (CSBG) program.

Signed into law on March 27, the relief program aims to address the consequences of increased unemployment and economic disruption resulting from the COVID-19 virus.

“The Coronavirus pandemic has triggered the most damaging economic crisis America has faced

in some 80 years,” said Adrian Fassett, CEO of EOC of Suffolk. “During this difficult period, these federal funds will help our organization fulfill our mission of promoting the economic self-sufficiency of Suffolk County residents.”

An applicant’s eligible expenses can include food, funeral costs, rental expenses, broker fees,

unemployment payments, stimulus payments, or other relief funding an individual has already received or is currently receiving.

Islip High School honored its Class of 2020 with a spectacular Senior Send-Off on June 10, as students and their families drove through balloon arches in the high school and middle school parking lots while being cheered on by staff spectators as well as the Islip Fire Department and Exchange Ambulance of the Islips. Pop-up tents and tables were set up to distribute yearbook, caps and gowns, and gift

baskets, and individual graduate signs were posted on the on grass. A DJ and live drummer added to the celebratory mood.

“The Senior Send-Off was truly a remarkable day, not only for the wonderful students of the Class of 2020, but for the Islip school community as a whole,” said Principal Jon LaRochester. “It is so important to be able to pull all the positives out of the very difficult situation we

all faced this past spring, and what was displayed at the parade was simply the very best of Islip. Seeing what this community and the school district were able to do when we came together was very powerful, and It provides hope and continued pride as we move forward toward the end of this pandemic and hopefully towards brighter days.”
