The Charity of the Month for July is: Rebuilding Together Long Island

he raised up his arms with a big smile and loudly exclaimed “Hello world, I’m here!” I can hear my mom saying “God is good” and I want to add, thank God for good people.”

With the support of all of their many volunteers and partners, Rebuilding Together Long Island has become a wellregarded organization, recognized for their work with rehabbing houses, the building and installation of ramps for those in need and their involvement with communities and organizations that span across Long Island. They need your help to keep up the momentum!

There are four main ways you can get involved with their organization: 1) Volunteer. They are looking for volunteers to work hands on with a crew performing home repair work. Individuals do not have to have specific handyman skills, training is available. All volunteers must be at least 18 years old. Additionally, they are looking for a licensed Plumber or Electrician to volunteer their time and skills to help on specific projects. Lastly, they are in need of home visitors to walk through the homes of needy individuals for a safety inspection.

2) Sponsor a Project. RTLI allows corporations to sponsor a project so they can see a positive impact on the life of a senior, veteran, disabled person or a family in need. This is a great opportunity team building and a community leadership opportunity for your employees. Why not demonstrate your organization’s commitment to community service and improving the quality of life on Long Island!

3) Attend a Meeting. Meetings are held on the first Wednesday of every month at their office located at 208 Route 109, Suite 204 in Farmingdale at 10 am.

4) Donate. Consider making a donation to their organization. Funding is a continuous requirement to support their efforts. Any and all donations are greatly appreciated. The money you donate stays on Long Island to help our Long Island neighbors!

Rebuilding Together Long Island is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization. They are an affiliate of the national organization, Rebuilding Together. They provide free home repairs to the frail and elderly, our veterans, people with d i s a b i l i t i e s and families with children. Those who receive the free home repairs must have met their financial criteria. Their mission as an organization is to repair homes, revitalize communities and rebuild lives.

They help Long Island’s economicallydisadvantaged homeowners so they can live in comfort and safety while maintaining their independence (RTLI does not service the Hamptons).

RTLI was founded in 1992 by a small group of volunteers that were eager to help needy homeowners. Today they have one paid employee and 200 volunteers, which are the heart and soul of their organization. Their experienced volunteers perform the vast majority of the work they do and they come from all walks of life.

This organization performs repairs including carpentry, electrical, plumbing and home modifications (including wheelchair ramps for the physically challenged), weatherization, installation of smoke alarms, back and front yard clean-up and more. Since 1992 they have provided repairs to over 2,600 homeowners in need at a current pace of over 150 projects annually within Nassau and Suffolk.

Seeing improvement in the lives of Long Island residents is truly what makes all the hard-work from this organization worth it. There are countless testimonials from those who have received help from Rebuilding Together Long Island. Recently the organization received a letter of thanks for all their help that was extremely touching.

The sender wrote, “I just want to reach out again to thank all involved with the preparation and construction of the ramp for my dad. It has been a sincere pleasure; from the first meeting with Marian and Kathy, to meeting Joe and coming up with the plan, and then witnessing the building process. The crew were all so wonderful and inspiring! I was amazed at how quickly and smoothly it all came together! Not only is the ramp functional, it’s beautiful and brightens up the dark patio! It was a great moment when I first wheeled my father down the driveway, onto the sidewalk, and

First Art Honor Society Ceremony East Islip High School held its first Art Honor Society induction ceremony on June 6 in the school’s library, with Jenna Donnelly recognized as the Service Award recipient for 2018-2019. The 57 inductees included officers Robert Camlet, Nicholas Conzo, Lauren Florenz and Logan Witte.

“Being a co-adviser for the NAHS with Heather Toomey this year has been amazing,” said Daniel

Figliozzi. “We collaborate well and in turn have done some unique service projects with our students.

Toomey organized a beautiful induction ceremony that I think our students and their parents really appreciated. I’m excited to see what else we can do with our talented NAHS members next year.”

“It was a beautiful ceremony and I am incredibly proud and honored to be the adviser

to such a creative, dedicated and talented group of student-artists,” said adviser Heather Toomey. “They have given many hours of art service to the local and global community and uphold academic and artistic standards. I am so proud of our officers, scholarship recipients and all who supported our organization this year.”

Teddy Bear Clinic Kindergartners at East Islip’s Timber Point Elementary School recently brought in their beloved stuffed animals to participate in the school’s annual Teddy Bear Clinic, sponsored by Good Samaritan Hospital

Medical Center. Good Samaritan’s Trauma and Child Life departments – represented by pediatric trauma coordinator Cathy Wirtenson, child life specialist Nancy Kennedy and staff assistant Lauren Buckley – worked together

to present the interactive half-hour clinic, which covers car and helmet safety and gives the students a chance to dress up as doctors and nurses and take care of their injured toys.

Flotteron, East Islip High School’s Students Against Destructive Decisions club held a press conference about the “100 Deadliest Days” on June 12, with a massive display of smashed cars set up by Bang Towing in front of the school

as the backdrop.

Teen auto crash rates rise dramatically during the 100 Deadliest Days, which last from Memorial Day to Labor Day. Led by SADD adviser Bridget Lopiccolo, the event brought awareness to the dangers of drinking/texting and driving, driving while impaired and distracted driving.

“The SADD Club is

committed to educating students, staff and community that acts such as drinking and driving or texting and driving can not only affect your life but the lives of others,” said Lopiccolo. “We do not want to lose another student or community member to these preventable decisions.”

Poetry Contest Winners Fourth and fifth grade students in Christine LeMaire’s and Julie McGarty’s classes at Islip’s Commack Road Elementary School, with the assistance of ENL coteacher Meghan Finnerty,

celebrated National Poetry Month this past April, enjoying reading and writing poetry throughout the month. Poems by 14 of the Islip students were entered into the American Library of Poetry’s 2019

Student Poetry Contest and selected to be published this fall in a special book of poetry, “Illustrious.”

COACH GUY LEGGIO HONORED - East Islip Wrestling Coach Guy Leggio was honored at the June Town Board meeting, in recognition of his induction last month into the Suffolk County Sports Hall of Fame. Coach Leggio spent 21 seasons as the East Islip High School wrestling coach, propelling the program into a success story, and compiling a 270-115-5 record. Leggio was inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame in 2014. Leggio joined his father, Jumper Leggio, a legend in the world of youth wrestling, in the Hall of Fame.
