Inspiration. It can come from anywhere. A song. A movie. A book. A beautiful sunset. A peaceful walk along the shoreline. Anywhere.

As I sit here on yet another deadline day, scrambling to finish the last of my work for the week, I am in search of some of that inspiration for my column. Last week’s article drew perhaps some of the greatest attention on the social media circuit, as I was pleasantly surprised by numerous “likes,” “comments” and “shares” from those supporters who follow my page on

Facebook (see above).

It’s amazing how a little positive feedback can provide that much-needed affirmation that, yes, you are doing something worthwhile that people appreciate. And, on that note, I do appreciate the support of you, the readers.

Without an audience, words are merely diary entries, notes to self never meant to see the light of day. But with interaction, and reaction, they take on new life.

Of course, it helps to actually get out from behind the desk and live life from time to time too. How else can you expect to experience

those glorious sunsets and shorelines? And summer is indeed the perfect time for all of the above. Work hard to play hard, right? Well this is the season to take those vacation days, even if it’s only to catch up on your reading or start watching a new TV series. For those more adventurous among us, take a trip to NYC, or Fire Island, or Montauk… pick a direction, and just go.

Make it your mission this summer to find the inspiration that has been missing from your life.

And once you find it – write about it, take pictures of it, find some new way to capture it… and savor it.

The Christopher Pendergast ALS Center of Excellence, the only ALS Associationcertified center on Long Island, has successfully received recertification as a “Treatment Center of Excellence” by the national association. The ALS Association cited the Center as having the “highest national standards of care in

the management of Lou Gehrig’s disease.”

To commemorate this milestone, the association awarded the Center with a $12,500 grant and a plaque marking its designation.

Named in 2010 in honor of Christopher Pendergast, a 21-year ALS patient, advocate and founder of the Ride for Life Organization, the

ALS Center of Excellence is one of only 34 ALS Association-certified centers in the United States and three in New York State. The Center first received certification in 2009. The Center provides comprehensive treatment for ALS patients, supportive services for patients

On June 14th, Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, Inc. sponsored by Sagamore Yacht Club and Oakcliff Sailing Center, hosted its Second Annual Alzheimer’s Regatta and Awards Dinner at the Sagamore Yacht Club in Oyster Bay. The regatta raised over $23,000, which will benefit Alzheimer’s Disease research and support.

The highest fundraising team in the fundraising category was “Paddlers for Poker” with team captain Jean Fassino.

The team raised a total of $745.

The first-place winner of this year’s Regatta Sailing Race was “Rift” captained by Bill Maher.

Life On Fire Island

The ecosystem on Fire Island is as diverse as it is complex. Everything, from the smallest tick to the largest shark, can be found on the Fire Island National Seashore.

In my six years of living on Fire Island, I have seen whales, sharks, dolphins and many other aquatic creatures. The whale sightings are very rare, but dolphins can be seen almost everyday.

Sharks wash up on the beach occasionally, but you never see their dorsal fins popping up out of the water as in many popular movies. Just the other day on my way to work, I saw a small, dried shark on the sand getting pecked at by seagulls.

Types of marine life aren’t the only animals making a presence on Fire Island. Birds, insects and

other land species have also been spotted. We have a myriad of bird species on Fire Island. It seems like each year, people spot a different kind of bird!

Some of the aviary species that call this barrier island home include seagulls, piping plovers and ospreys.

Fire Island has an overwhelming number of insects. Pound for pound, insects make up the most populous genre of life on Fire Island. Mosquitos, ticks, spiders and beetles are literally everywhere you look. Some claim that this abundance is a bad thing, but they are wrong. Insects are the backbone to a healthy ecosystem. Insects are the most crucial part of Fire Island’s environment.

Deer are arguably Fire Island’s most shining feature.

Following the notorious Hurricane Sandy, our island was decimated.

Now, Fire Island and its inhabitants are quickly regaining their strength.

The Annual Bay Shore Beautification Society Luncheon, entitled “Put on Your Dancin’ Shoes,” was held on Tuesday, June 19th, at Captain Bill’s Bay View House on the Great South Bay. Entertainment was provided by the Red Hot Mamas, an energetic professional tap company comprised of senior women between the ages of 54 and 89 who have been kicking up their heels in the New York area for 20 years.

Directed by Louise Rastu and Toni Wortman, their repertoire includes

selections from Broadway shows, old time favorites and modern and popular music.

Each number featured spectacular costumes, and when the audience was invited to learn a dance with the “Mamas,” over 40 enthusiastic guests crowded the dance floor.

Several guests wanted to know, “How can we start a group like this in Bay Shore?” The luncheon also featured raffles for over 125 different prizes (donated by local merchants), a 5050 raffle, a trivia contest

and an auction for a year’s worth of flowers donated by Beebe’s Florist.

Event Coordinators Judy Edelstein and Sue Boudreau were assisted by Jeanne Michel, Mary Louise Cohen, Pat Perricone and Sean Collins.

The Beautification Society is a subcommittee of the Bay ShoreBrightwaters Summit Council and has been in existence for over 19 years.

All funds raised at the luncheon will be used for programs to beautify Bay Shore.

Star Island’s 28th Annual Shark Tournament was held on June 13th-14th at Star Island Yacht Club. One hundred fifteen boats took part in the two-day event, with more than half of the entrants participating for the first time.

Stony Brook School of Journalism Dean Howard Schneider and Undergraduate Director Paul Schreiber were tapped by the Press Club of Long Island (PCLI) as inaugural “Hall of Fame” inductees this week. The PCLI, which celebrated its 40th anniversary this month, is a chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists.

PCLI established its new Hall of Fame this year to recognize 25 trailblazing journalists and media organization owners, living and deceased, who have produced and promoted the highest level of journalism based on Long Island and shown leadership in the industry. It is an “evolution of PCLI’s annual lifetime achievement award and was created to celebrate the accomplishments and achievements of journalists,” according to the organization.

“Howie and Paul were extraordinary journalists prior to joining Stony Brook University. They deserve this honor, and we are fortunate to have them at the helm of SUNY’s first and only School of Journalism,” said Dennis N. Assanis, Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs at Stony Brook University. “Their vision, real-world experience, energy and enthusiasm have enabled the

School of Journalism to grow immensely over the past eight years, and it’s no surprise that their good work has brought national acclaim to the Stony Brook campus.”

After leaving Newsday as its editor in 2004 after 35 years at the paper, Schneider was invited by then-

thresher — the heaviest catch overall — while the heaviest mako was reeled in by Charles Maurer Jr. aboard the “Alyssa Ann,” weighing in at 281 pounds.

The heaviest blue shark of the tournament weighed in at 250 pounds and was caught by Paul Allegra aboard the “Helena.”

Paul Schreiber, who took a buyout from Newsday in 2002 after 33 years at the paper, returned to Stony Brook in 2004 as director of the journalism minor. He became the SOJ’s undergraduate director when the school was approved.

Following Schneider’s strategic plan, they developed its comprehensive multimedia curriculum and its Center for News Literacy, the pioneering program that enables students to use critical thinking skills to judge the reliability and credibility of news reports from all media, including the Web. That program has since spread to dozens of other universities in North America and overseas.

More recently, the school has added the Alan Alda Center for Communicating Science, the Marie Colvin Center for International Reporting and a Master of Science degree in journalism.

Musicians Shine Young musicians from each of East Islip’s six schools performed during the district’s spring concert series, held in May and June at the high school’s Rydzeski Hall.

Students in the four elementary schools – Connetquot, John F. Kennedy, Ruth C. Kinney and Timber Point – also performed daytime concerts for classmates, held in their respective schools. For some, it was the first step in their music careers as students. For others, it was the culmination of many years of hard work, practice and determination. For the appreciative audiences, it was pure enjoyment and pride.

At Timber Point’s concert, the performance by the school’s chorus, directed by Kathy Carter, included traditional English children’s counting song “This Ol’ Man,” enhanced with the singers’ use of body percussion as well as percussion instruments, square dancing and a puppet. “It all added an element of surprise,” said Carter, whose students closed on a patriotic note with “United We Stand,” which incorporated a medley of songs including “The Battle Hymn of the Republic,” “America” and “America the Beautiful.” “The chorus performed with tremendous enthusiasm, focus and musicality,” said Carter. “They worked extremely hard preparing these songs for their last Timber Point concert and I am very proud of each and every singer.”

Additional choral highlights included the Beatles’ “Blackbird” by the Connetquot Chorus, directed by John

Patrick Murphy; selections from the musical “Wicked” by the East Islip Middle School Concert Choir, directed

by Patricia Bryan; and spiritual “The Battle of Jericho” by the East Islip High School Honors Choir, directed by Bethany Affelt.

bands, directed by Ronald Fox and Lynda Maniscalco, respectively; medleys of Glenn Miller and Queen favorites by the East Islip Middle School Concert Band, directed by Concetta Stevens; and John Mackey’s “Kingfishers Catch Fire” by the East Islip High School Wind Ensemble, directed by Christopher Neske.

Middle School, noted that her students had focused on American music during the spring semester. The eighth-grade string orchestra worked in collaboration with the seventh-grade girls chorus and chorus director Patricia Bryan to perform a special rendition of “America the Beautiful,” followed by the “John Williams Trilogy” and Sousa’s “The Stars and Stripes Forever,” while the seventh-grade string orchestra tackled Percy Hall’s challenging “Variations on America,” based on the events of 9/11. “Not only did the students have the opportunity to perform some familiar music, but they were also able to connect the pieces to specific times in our American history,” said Fisher.

At the high school concerts, orchestra highlights included Arturo Marquez’s “Danzon No. 2” by the honors symphony orchestra, directed by Susan Rydzeski, while at the elementary levels, students performed works such as Edmund J. Siennicki’s “Frog in a Tree” with ambitious verve. “I was especially impressed with the fourth-graders’ ability to perform such a difficult repertoire in just a short period of time,” said Jaime DeMaria, who directed the Connetquot and Timber Point elementary school orchestras. “They did a great job keeping up with the advanced and skilled fifth-graders. Congratulations to all students on a job well done.”

The requests for help are increasing. We’d begin issuing program vouchers in March to coincide with kitten season, and often run out of funds by midNovember. We simply did not have enough money to keep discounts available all year. It is heartbreaking not to be able to assist every caller pleading for help, or every feral or cat colony on Last Hope’s radar. Just this week, we received a call from a 95 year old man who had a mother cat nursing kittens in his shed.”

The generous grant from the ASPCA will continue to aid in the distribution of “Fix-A-Feral” vouchers so they last the entire year.

At the height of kitten season, the time of year when shelters are most inundated with mother cats and kittens, the Last Hope cat hotline averages 50 calls a day. TNR is about population control and quality of life for feral cats. In an ideal world, all cats would have human contact and be socialized early in life so they can find loving homes. With Last Hope’s “Fix-A-Feral” program, fewer kittens will be born into feral colonies; thus, reducing the number of cats roaming Long Island streets and/ or ending up in shelters.

The ASPCA is helping Last Hope to accomplish this compassionate goal on Long Island.

Last Hope Animal Rescue & Rehabilitation, Inc. is thrilled to announce that it has again received a $5,000 grant from the ASPCA® (The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals®) to fund Last Hope’s “FixA-Feral” program, which offers financial assistance to the Long Island public to spay/neuter feral cats. This program aids in alleviating the tremendous feral cat overpopulation problem as this discount incentive also enables the public to afford to help more cats.

In 2003, Last Hope initiated its “Fix-A-Feral” voucher system, which makes the cost of spay/ neuter and vaccines for feral cats more economical to the public by reducing the price at participating veterinary clinics. Voucher users must agree to participate in the TNR ( Tr a p / N e u t e r / R e t u r n ) program, whereby the cats are returned (if not tame) to the location where they were trapped; and then commit to feeding, and providing shelter for the cats. Tame cats enter Last Hope’s adoption program.

Last Hope’s “Fix-AFeral” program is geared to experienced cat caregivers as well as beginners who may only care for several cats. Last Hope also lends out humane “Have a Heart” traps and guides novice trappers. “Fix-A-Feral” has subsidized the spaying and neutering of over 16,000 cats since it began 11 years ago.

“In the past, we spent a lot of time planning fundraisers to support Last Hope’s “Fix-A-Feral” initiative,” said Linda

poster contest, sponsored by the Suffolk County American Legion, and student Jennifer Brzostek came out the winner. She was awarded a certificate of achievement as well as a prize in honor of her outstanding poster design.

The participating students’ objective was to create posters during art class addressing the theme, “What The American Flag Means To Me.” Their submitted designs included American

flags, bald eagles and the Statue of Liberty, using a wide array of artistic skills, techniques and materials.

Despite harsh weather conditions, tickets sold out at the Indian Hills Golf Course for the Angela’s House Golf Outing.

Moral was high, and the united support from friends and family could not be deterred by the morning delay due to torrential down pours.

The Golfers came out to support Angela’s House for the annual golf outing in Northport on June 9th. The 12th Annual Golf Outing was a major success for the charity and helped raise a great deal of money for medically frail children and their families across Long Island.

The LeMaire family was a main sponsor for this event. Brandon LeMaire, their son was one of the children who Angela’s House served. The Family holds a close connection with Bob Policastro, and the organization, and sponsored the event in Brandon’s memory. The
