A total of 56 delegates signed the document.

Although John Hancock’s signature is the largest, it did not hold more weight than the other signatures.

Rather, rumor has it, Hancock signed it so large so that the “fat, old King could read it without his spectacles.” However, the National Archives says it was also customary that, since Hancock was the president of the Continental Congress, he be the first person to sign the document centered below the text.

The Pennsylvania Evening Post was the first newspaper to print the Declaration of Independence on July 6, 1776. The first public readings of the Declaration were held in Philadelphia’s Independence Square on July 8, 1776.

John Adams, a staunch supporter of American independence and a representative for Boston at the First Continental Congress, felt that, after America gained independence from Great Britain, July 2nd was the correct date on which to celebrate American Independence Day. July 2nd was when the vote for independence took place. July 4, 1776 was when the Declaration of Independence was officially signed. Thereafter, Adams would reportedly decline invitations to appear at July 4th events in protest.

In an interesting turn of events, July 4th would prove significant to Adams in another way. Both Adams and Thomas Jefferson, another key figure in American history, died on July 4, 1826, which marked the 50th anniversary of the adoption of the Declaration of Independence.

Conflict between the colonies had been going on for at least a year before the colonies convened a Continental Congress in Philadelphia in June of 1776, says Military.com. On July 2, 1776, the Continental Congress voted in favor of independence from England. Two days later, on July 4, 1776, delegates from the 13 colonies adopted the Declaration of Independence.

The Declaration of Independence is an historic document drafted by Thomas Jefferson. Jefferson was considered the strongest and most eloquent writer of the declaration writing committee charged with putting the colonies’ sentiments into words.

Richard Henry Lee of Virginia was one of the first people to present a resolution for American independence, and his commentary was the impetus for the formal Declaration of Independence. A total of 86 changes were made to Jefferson’s original draft

Few summertime holidays elicit as much excitement as the Fourth of July, also known as Independence Day in the United States. Each year, family, friends and revelers anticipate the arrival of the holiday so they can enjoy the sun, listen to their favorite summertime tunes, and commemorate the freedoms afforded by the monumental events that led to the holiday’s establishment.

Independence Day became a federal holiday in 1941, but July 4th has stood as the birth of American independence for much longer. July 4th marks a pivotal moment in the American Revolution.

According to PBS, the colonies were forced to pay taxes to England’s King George III despite having no representation in the British Parliament.

“Taxation without representation” became a battle cry and was one of several grievances colonists had with Great Britain.

New York State is still hiring contact tracers! New York State will hire and train a team of staff working remotely to support the NYS Department of Health and local health departments to perform COVID-19 contact tracing in communities across NYS. The History Of America’s Independence Day

NYS Hiring Contact Tracers

The Central Islip Board of Education has appointed Ms. Sharon A. Dungee as Superintendent of Schools, effective July 1, 2020. Ms. Dungee was unanimously appointed at the May 11, 2020 Board of Education Meeting.

Ms. Dungee brings a wealth of academic experience to the Office of the Superintendent. She began her career as an elementary school teacher before coming to Central Islip to serve in an array of administrative positions including assistant principal, principal, and most recently in her role as Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum & Instruction.

“Throughout her tenure in Central Islip School District, Ms. Dungee has demonstrated outstanding leadership and management skills, and a unique ability to

work collegiately with all employees as well as with all stakeholders in the community,” School Board President Norman A. Wagner said of Ms. Dungee. “Her educational experience, coupled with her unwavering commitment to the Central Islip School District and the community it serves, make her an asset to our children and the education we are charged with providing.”

Ms. Dungee will lead the district which consists of six elementary schools, one middle school and a high school. Central Islip School District has an enrollment of approximately 7,500 students, and voterapproved spending plans that have received community support for the past 14 years.

As she prepares to take the helm as Superintendent, Ms.

Dungee noted, “I believe the success of a school district is measured, in part, by the implementation of a wellbalanced instructional system that meets the educational needs of all students. Take Your Fourth Of July Burgers Up A Notch

American Flag Etiquette

The American flag symbolizes many things to many people. While the American flag is proudly displayed in millions of buildings and homes across the United States year-round, it tends to draw special attention each summer, when Americans celebrate their independence on July 4.

The Flag Code formalizes and unifies the standards of respect that must be given to the flag, even containing specific instructions regarding how the flag should not be used. The following are some of the rules that govern how to display the American flag.

Raising And Lowering The Flag According to USFlag. org, the American flag should be raised quickly and lowered slowly and ceremoniously. While the Flag Code suggests the flag should be displayed only between sunrise and sunset, if it is displayed at night, it should be illuminated. The flag should be saluted as it is hoisted, and when lowered that salute should be held until the flag is unsnapped from the halyard or through the final note of music, whichever is the longest.

When displayed indoors, the flag should be displayed to the right of the speaker, staging area or sanctuary. Any additional flags hanging in the room should always hang to the left of the American flag. FASNY Urges New Yorkers To Play It Safe This Fourth Of July The Fourth of July may feel a little different this year due to COVID-19.

Smaller barbecues, less parties and limited celebrations filled with displayed fireworks. Although sparklers and similar items can be bought and sold in much of New York State, the Firemen’s Association of the State of New York (FASNY) urges residents to let professionals handle the fireworks.

FASNY reminds New Yorkers that although sparklers may look harmless, and almost toy-like, they are incredibly harmful and can cause serious injury and fires. “Fireworks and sparkling

devices are extremely dangerous in the hands of non-professionals,” said FASNY President Steven Klein. “Although they seem fun, fireworks and sparkling devices can cause serious bodily harm and even death. Fireworks should only be used by professionals who have undergone proper training.”

The tip of a sparkler burns at a temperature of nearly 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit, which can cause severe 3rd degree burns. According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), sparklers cause roughly 25 percent of all fireworks-related emergency room visits,

the most of any type of fireworks device.

A 2019 report from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission shows that in 2018, fireworks were involved in an estimated 9,100 injuries. Between June and July of 2018, emergency rooms treated 5,600 patients for firework related injuries. Children under the age of 15 accounted for 36 percent of these injuries.

According to the report, forty-four percent of the emergency departmenttreated injuries were burns, with the most common injury to hands, fingers, and arms.

“Rather than take the risk of getting

hurt, FASNY is urging New Yorkers to either attend a fireworks display in their town or county -- while maintaining proper protocols -- or to watch one of the professional shows that will be televised or live-streamed,” said President Klein.

“On behalf of the Firemen’s Association of the State of New York, and all of the dedicated firefighters who serve the Empire State, we wish everyone a happy, healthy and safe Fourth of July,” said President Klein, “And should there be an emergency or unsafe situation, we urge everyone to call 911. It’s better to be safe than sorry.”

Equity First Foundation (EFF) is a 501c3 nonprofit organization located here on Long Island. Rhonda Klch started this foundation with the mission to offer services, resources and programs to consumers and small businesses that are facing financial distress. Although the details of financial markets may not be necessary for everyone, a good understanding of everyday finances is needed to ensure your home, bank account and additional assets are protected as you go about your life.

This nonprofit is guided by a board of experts from the Long Island business community. They strive to educate the community so people can make financial decisions with knowledge and confidence. EFF provides financial education, literacy and best practices at low or no cost to individuals and groups from primary school through retirement and including life events.

In March of 2020, when the pandemic really started to hit hard, Rhonda, along with the assistance of her board members, united to find solutions for the community despite what was going on. Rhonda believed that even though EFF programs may be on hold, that did not mean the people of the community did not still need answers and help. She has worked endless hours for the sake of the families that need assistance and need a voice.

Since the pandemic Rhonda has either spearheaded or collaborated in many projects to help our community out. Here is an example of just a few: The Grab & Go 3,000 Event in Patchogue: Rhonda collaborated with business owner of local restaurant to provide over 3,000 hot meals to families in need.

Grab & Go Breakfast in Rocky Point: EFF collaborated with local bagel store owner,

Edward Henry of Strathmore bagels and a few sponsors, to give-away over 300 breakfasts to families in need.

6 Week Marathon: March 29th was the beginning of a 6 week marathon of assisting front line workers with food. EFF and Rhonda did a Go Fund Me with local bagel store owner, Edward Henry to supply St. Charles, Mather and Stony Brook Hospital food every night.

PPE Equipment Fundraiser: EFF collaborated with several Allstate Insurance offices to raise funds for PPE equipment. Over 2,000 masks were delivered to various hospitals, senior centers, nursing homes and fire districts.
