Members of the Islip Middle School student government spent a day in May learning about environmental conservation.

Traveling to West Meadow Beach in Stony Brook, the students met with a local park ranger and a representative from the Department of Environmental Conservation to learn about the marsh area and

the marine life that lives within the marsh.

Following this lesson, the students spent the remainder of the day tagging horseshoe crabs and rescuing terrapin turtles. By tagging the horseshoe crabs, park officials will be able to gather data on distribution, movement and other important details on the life cycle of the marine life.

In addition to attending the field trip, the student government also raised funds to help the environmental cause.

The money raised was donated to Friends of Flax Pond, which promotes stewardship and preserves the natural beauty, ecological significance and distinctive resources of Flax Pond and the surrounding coastal areas.

Math-A-Thon Collaborating in an effort to raise funds for a great cause, students in the Islip Middle School National Junior Honor Society and the sixth-grade math classes participated in the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital’s annual Math-A-Thon.

According to its website, “for more than 30 years,

St. Jude Math-A-Thon has been America’s largest education-based fundraiser. It includes a free math curriculum supplement for grades K-8, which students complete after obtaining sponsorships from friends and family.”

“I have a personal connection to cancer and

wanted to find a way to pay it forward and thought this was a great opportunity,” said sixth-grade teacher Dianne Ungaro, who organized the event along with Laura Greco and Jessica Kirsh. In their first year of participation, the sixth-graders and NJHS raised $1,325 for St. Jude’s.

Downtowns To Receive Grants The Islip Town Board voted recently on four resolutions that would enable several downtown areas in Islip Town to receive grant funding. The downtown portions of Bay Shore, Islip Terrace, Islip, and Holbrook will each be awarded grant funding in varying amounts, which will be used to help make our downtowns more attractive to shoppers and businesses alike. As part of Suffolk County’s Downtown Revitalization Program the Town and the County will contribute equal shares to each hamlet to help pay for the desired projects, as decided upon by the local Chambers of Commerce.

“Healthy downtown areas provide an economic boost that simply can’t be attained through other means, and so the Town is proud to administer these funds to our local Chambers,”

said Councilman Steve Flotteron. “The jobs and atmosphere provided by thriving downtown businesses is an essential part of Islip Town’s character.

Everyone benefits when our downtowns succeed.”

Bay Shore is set to receive $30,000 from both the Town and the County, which will be allocated toward street lighting and sidewalk improvement on the east side of Third Avenue, between Union Boulevard and Mechanicsville Road.

In Islip Terrace, portions of Carleton Avenue between Andrew Avenue and Fisher Avenue will benefit from $35,750 from both the Town and the County. The funds will be used to improve sidewalks, drainage, curbing, and other projects that will improve the local walkways.

Islip Hamlet’s grant

funding will total $70,000; $35,000 each from the Town and County. The municipal parking lot will receive improvements and upgrades to its curbing and lighting, which will benefit shoppers and restaurant patrons.

Holbrook’s downtown area will receive the largest of the four grants, with both the Town and County each contributing $80,000 toward the repair and improvement of the walkways near the intersection of Main Street and Furrows Road.

Additional lighting will also be installed to improve pedestrian safety in this heavily-trafficked area.

East Islip Middle School’s student government sponsored the school’s seventh annual Coffee House on May 16th, raising more than $1,000 to benefit the Special Olympics New York.

The Guilds of Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center recently presented $1,500 scholarships to three exemplary junior volunteers. The 2014 honorees - Alyssa Lim, Claudia Leonard and Maria Tobin - plan to pursue careers that will benefit health care. Their goals are to use their experience as volunteers in continuing their educations in fields that will benefit the safety and wellbeing of others.

Good Samaritan Executive Vice President and Chief Administrative Officer Nancy Simmons commended this year’s recipients for their exemplary academic achievements and work ethic.

“You have accomplished so much in a short time and embrace the best notion of volunteerism which is fundamental to us at Good Samaritan. The ability to be charitable is a gift that I know each of you will carry on throughout your health care careers, hopefully back at Good Samaritan,” said Ms. Simmons.

Claudia Leonard, a senior at Brentwood High School, has contributed more than 200 hours to the hospital’s C Unit and Transport Service and plans to pursue a career in medicine as a college student at Boston University.

“Volunteering at the hospital has given me an incredible opportunity to get a glimpse into the environment that I

hope to become a part of in the future,” said Ms. Leonard.

In addition to volunteering at Good Samaritan, she continued to challenge herself academically by taking Honors and AP classes while maintaining an A average.

Alyssa Lim, a graduate of Central Islip High School,

volunteered in the hospital’s Cardiology waiting area, contributing nearly 250 hours of service. She will be attending Adelphi University to study nursing and hopes to return to Good Samaritan. “I am honored to have volunteered at Good Sam having had the opportunity to make a patient’s day better with a smile and encouraging

school cafeteria into a hip, cozy venue for students to showcase their creativity in 25 different spoken word and musical performances that included original poetry and storytelling, acoustic solo guitar, and band, orchestra and chorus. The evening also

included a performance by the school’s jazz band and a fundraising auction, which yielded $1,306.30 for the Special Olympics.

Junior volunteers at Good Samaritan have the opportunity to enhance their personal development and learn skills while assisting the hospital in providing its important services to the community. Scholarship funds are provided by the Central Council of the Guilds of Good Samaritan and through donations received at Good Samaritan’s Guild Thrift Shop, Gift Shop and Captree Café. The medical center has more than 450 active junior volunteers, who collectively contributed more than 5,000 hours in 2013.

Between the ages of 15 and 18, they come from 17 different school districts in the vicinity of Good Samaritan Hospital. The program enables high school students to meet their community service requirements, as they participate in hospital events and assist various departments throughout the facility.

Well they tend to get lost in the shuffle, swept aside in favor of dwelling on those days that didn’t go quite according to plan. I think that’s why I love photography so much. Memories are priceless, to be sure; but there is something truly precious – and irreplaceable – about capturing that instant of happiness forever.

These are the days to remember, ‘cause they will not last forever… so said one of Long Island’s finest songwriters, Billy Joel. Best to store them away for a rainy day – or, in my case, snap a photo for posterity.

“Recorder Karate is a wonderful supplement to our third-grade music curriculum at Connetquot,” explained Murphy. “The recorder is an invaluable tool for teaching musicianship and preparing students for the instrumental program.

By earning recorder belts, it engages students in independent practicing and rewards their hard work.

Nearly every morning before school, I have several students come to the music room hoping to perform and earn a belt song that they practiced at home. It’s a wonderful

feeling for me, as their music teacher, to see the excitement and love of music that our Connetquot Recorder Karate members demonstrate.”

The talented thirdgraders of Connetquot Elementary performed the school’s first Recorder Karate concert on June 4th, engaging the audience of parents, friends and younger students with a variety of tunes from familiar favorite “Hot Cross Buns” to a beautiful rendition of “Amazing Grace.”

Band leader John P. Murphy helped educate the audience by narrating throughout the performance, explaining techniques such as breathing patterns and finger placements used to create the concert’s melodies.

Throughout the school year, the third-grade musicians learned and mastered songs under Murphy’s direction. After

Well, it’s officially summer. School is over and the weather is getting warm. I’m a high school graduate now, and I am expected to act like a man.

Looking back, I find it strange that high school seniors are treated like children while they are making some of the most important decisions of their lives. I had to ask to use the restroom a few weeks ago.

If we aren’t granted that much freedom, how can we be expected to make smart decisions regarding college?

From my experiences, I do not think seventeen year-old kids are responsible enough to make their own decisions.

Sure, there may be a few exceptions to the rule, but

Usdan University is offered year after year by popular demand, and it was created to respond to friends of the Center, Usdan alumni and parents of students saying “What about something for me, too?” or “I want to relive the Usdan experience,” or “Be 13 again.”

Participants often come from distant states as well as the Tri-State Area.

The day begins with a wide variety of arts classes, including (besides Organic Gardening and Cooking): Digital Photography (composition and presentation of Macintosh computers); Painting (acrylics and/or pastels); Hand building ceramics, Potter’s wheel ceramics (ceramics students may leave their pieces for firing, and pick them up later in the summer); Broadway jazz dance (some background suggested); Musical Theater (acting, speech, movement, voice, theatrical expression and improvisation. (No prerequisite).

The morning classes are followed by a gourmet lunch, catered by Long Island’s Suburban Eats, and a concert in the onsite, 1,000-seat McKinley Ampitheater, followed by afternoon recreation, which can include Chorus, Nature Walk, Archery or a campus tour. There will also be an optional swim in Usdan’s Olympic-sized pools, from 3:15 to 4:15 p.m.

The “students” in performance classes sometimes (without pressure or requirement!) take the stage in the Center’s Ampitheate to demonstrate their morning’s work.

And at the end of the day, everyone gets ice cream (a Usdan tradition) and even a diploma!

Distant Memories Swim Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, Inc. (ADRC) has announced that Bryan Proctor, a Huntington resident and a physical education teacher, will lead a team of swimmers in the 11th Annual Distant Memories Swim on Wednesday, July 23rd, in order to draw attention to this devastating disease that impacts over 60,000 families here on Long Island. In its lifetime, The Swim has raised in excess of $100,000 for those with Alzheimer’s Disease and

their unpaid caregivers.

Opening ceremonies are expected to begin promptly at 9 a.m. Mr. Proctor and his teammates will take to the water at 9:30 a.m.

Mr. Proctor and his teammates will start out at Asharoken Beach and swim across the bay to Knollwood Beach — a distance of approximately 2.5 nautical miles (less than 3 miles).

The swim will also help raise funds for Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, Inc. through sponsorships and corporate donors. The goal is to raise $20,000 to

help support services and programs for Long Island families coping with the challenges of Alzheimer’s Disease.

This issue is very close to Mr. Proctor, as his grandfather and aunt passed away from Alzheimer’s Disease.

“Bryan is a champion for those with a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s Disease. He is a role model for the youth of our country,” states Mary Ann Malack-Ragona, Executive Director/ Chief Executive Officer for Alzheimer’s Disease

Resource Center, Inc. “He has continuously expressed the sentiment that he wants to raise awareness about this deadly disease and help families who live on Long Island.”

“It is my hope that substantial funds will be raised to assist Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center in providing for people with dementia and other related disorders,” Mr. Proctor said.

More than 95 of the best and brightest seniors were honored at East Islip High School’s Class of 2014 Awards and Scholarship Night, held on June 3rd at the school’s auditorium. Parents, administrators and award sponsors were on hand to congratulate these outstanding young scholars, athletes and role models on being recipients of numerous awards and scholarships.

“These scholarships help our students pay for college costs and textbook expenses,” said Guidance Director Israel Malinowitzer, who has organized and hosted the ceremony for the past 13 years.

“Many of our sponsors have been with us for many years, and the students were very grateful for the opportunity to be selected for these awards. I did my best to keep the audience laughing and enjoying the ceremony, and the students were very respectful to each other and supported all the winners.”
