United Way of Long Island is giving companies, organizations, families and friends the chance to battle for bragging rights on The Peconic River this summer by entering a four-person team in the annual Paddle Battle Long Island Team Challenge.

The Paddle Battle will be held on Saturday, July 30th at the town docks in Riverhead with proceeds from the Team Challenge going to United Way of Long Island’s VetsBuild Program, as well the Long Island Aquarium.

The Paddle Battle Team Challenge is a recreational Stand Up Paddle Board and Kayak race where groups will compete against each other for the coveted Paddle Battle Team Challenge trophy.

The race will consist of teams of four competitors who will traverse the 2.5 mile race course designed for all skill levels. The team with the overall best combined time will take home the championship trophy along with the title

of Top Team. The Award Ceremony will take place during a Family BBQ and Bash, which will include food, music, drinks and more for those cheering the teams on from the sidelines.

“It’s fantastic to see teams come out in the spirit of healthy competition to raise funds and awareness for Long Island veterans and their families,” said Theresa A. Regnante, President & CEO of United Way of Long Island. “We encourage anyone who has an interest in paddle boarding or kayaking, no matter their skill level, to come and test the waters to help our hometown heroes.”

There are those who need to have every detail of each day planned down to the last minute, with little room for even the slightest compromise or delay. And then there are those individuals who prefer to fly by the seat of their pants; no blueprint, no nothing, open to whatever adventures might beckon.

Me, I would definitely put myself in the former category.

Routine is my friend; schedules my muse. There is something about the sense of accomplishment one gets from checking items off a “To Do” list that lends itself to peace of mind. Of course, life itself is not simply one giant “To Do” list.

It requires a measure of flexibility and the ability to roll with those punches that may come flying your way.

This is where that spontaneity comes into play.

Case in point: I recently set out one Saturday afternoon to embark on a belated birthday

hitch, and the sun even managed to show itself for the majority of the journey. Imagine that. Phase two consisted of a quick little stopover at Gilgo Beach – after we both realized that neither of us had ever been there – before heading up to the Northport area for dinner and then to a laser light show at the Vanderbilt Planetarium.

And then came the rains.

Drenching, sheets of rain, pouring down on the windshield as we made our way down Ocean Parkway toward the bridge.

Maybe there’ll be a rainbow, I mused, as I peered through the wipers. Then this detour will have been completely worth it, this trip to the beach on a cloudy day, interrupted by torrential rain, ending with one of nature’s most magical creations…

And then, there it was, straight ahead, stretching over Cedar Beach. I looked at my friend and said, “Shall we pull over for a photo op?” Of course. Always time for a quick detour.

Planned Spontaneity celebration for a close friend from high school. The plan – to head to the beach for our first, postMemorial Day outing, followed by dinner and maybe some prime sunset viewing and photography opportunities. “Happy Wanderers” we are, indeed.

Of course, no sooner did I pack my beach bag, when the clouds rolled in, the winds kicked up and the sun disappeared behind a deep haze. Perfect sun bathing weather indeed. Alternate plans, anyone?

Determined not to let the entire day go to waste, we feverishly started brainstorming, checking weather forecasts, tracking the storm radar and hoping for the best. Instead of heading out to the sand, we parked at Field #5 at Robert Moses and decided to take a little stroll over to Kismet, Fire Island for lunch, wander around a bit, and head back – hopefully before the skies decided to open up with the impending thunderstorm that had been threatening all day.

and due to their small size and color can easily be overlooked, thus requiring the surrounding area to be closed off to driving. This process can be prolonged when a nest fails (eggs don’t hatch, or nest is disturbed). When this occurs, plovers will often re-nest, and the process starts again.

While adhering to the federal guidelines to protect the plovers, the Parks Department also recognizes that Suffolk County outer beaches are also a favorite site for beachgoers, fishermen, surfers and campers, and works hard to limit closures and maintain access to the best of its ability. Park visitors can help to limit length of closures by avoiding restricted areas, keeping pets leashed and following instruction from park staff and posted signs.

“Plover season has arrived”, announced the Suffolk County Parks Department, and with that inevitably comes the unfortunate obligation to close access to some outer beach areas within the Parks as required by the federal government.

The piping plovers are small, sand-colored birds that nest on dry, sandy beaches, making Long Island beaches an ideal habitat. Due to its declining population, the piping plover is listed as a threatened species and is therefore protected under the Endangered Species Act. The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service has developed recovery

CAPTURING FIRST - Natalia M., a student from South Country CSD enrolled in the Eastern Suffolk BOCES Computer Graphic Arts Program at Islip Career Center captured first place in the Mixed-Media category at the LongHouse Student Annual Art Show in East Hampton. Natalia will accept her award at a ceremony and reception on Tuesday, June 14th, at the LongHouse Reserve.Students are invited to participate in the Student Annual Art Show each year and are encouraged to express themselves in any media of their choosing.

Kindergartners at East Islip’s Connetquot Elementary School learned about the abundance of nature close to home on May 10th and 11th, enjoying the fine spring weather as they

participated in a series of guided nature walks at the local South Shore Nature Center.

Naturalists from the Seatuck Environmental Association introduced the children to the life

cycles of the local flora and fauna, and the students had a chance to encounter and observe tadpoles and turtles, a black racer snake, flying ospreys, and a mother deer.

Creative Country Fair Fifth-grade students at East Islip’s Ruth C. Kinney Elementary School completed research projects about South American or Central American countries for a special May 24th art show and country fair. The projects were presented on trifold boards that were shared with parents and the school community.

During the fair, student artwork was also displayed throughout the hallways,

showcasing the fifthgraders’ intensive study of artists and art movements throughout the year.

Projects featured included Seurat pointillism lighthouse landscape paintings, Georgia O’Keeffe-inspired clay flower bowls, Andy Warhol pop art printmaking and Wayne Thiebaud-inspired oil pastel cakes. The school’s third- and fourthgraders were also proud to display their multimedia

observational feather drawings, creative blue dog paintings and butterfly study drawings.

“Our students and families were able to enjoy all the artwork and creativity of the entire school as well as a slide show of fifth-grade students growing as artists through the years from first to fifth grade,” said art teacher Dana Belfiore.

“We don’t want kids to get all jammed up and ruin the rest of their lives or fatally injure someone else,” said Deputy Sheriff Thomas Incidence from the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Department, speaking at a simulated drunk buggy presentation at Eastern Suffolk BOCES (ESBOCES) Islip Career Center. The purpose of students wearing goggles and driving on a simulated obstacle course gives them the perception of being intoxicated.

“We want students to be safe. It’s prom season now and we need them to get the message that you can’t drink or text and drive,” said ESBOCES School Social Worker Amy Roland.

The drinking age may be 21 but many young adults

do begin drinking at 18 years old. “They drink to the point that they can’t find their cars or they walk into traffic,” said Incidence.

Sayville UFSD student Trina completed the obstacle course but not until after hitting and crushing several of the orange cones used to symbolize a person. “I felt really awful. I wouldn’t want to live with that for the rest of my life, that I hurt or killed someone.

I’m glad I participated in this exercise,” she said.

Patchogue-Medford UFSD student Dakota and Central Islip UFSD student Terrell agreed that wearing the goggles really messed with their perception. “It was like I had double vision and I had a hard time focusing,” said Dakota.

Terrell said it was a really bad experience for him and he would not drink and drive.

The simulated driving vehicles used by the Sheriff’s department are funded through a grant. The office has three driving buggies and DWI impairment goggles. Specially trained Sheriff’s office personnel provide a brief 20-minute presentation on DWI laws in New York State before the student’s drive the buggies.

Roland said, “It’s important that the students get to experience what it would really feel like to be driving while intoxicated or texting because it might make them think twice about certain situations.”

The Maggie Fischer Memorial Great South Bay Swim will take place on July 22nd. The swim will begin at the Fire Island Lighthouse and finish at Gilbert Park in Brightwaters. The distance is approximately 5.5 miles, with each swimmer having up to four hours to complete the race.

The Cross Bay Swim has been a tradition on Long Island since 1927, taking a 26-year hiatus from 19731999. Lifelong Bay Shore resident Rory Allen revived the race in 1999, recruiting lifeguards to participate in its return. Maggie Fischer, a 17 year-old senior at St. Anthony’s High School and a lifeguard at Saltaire, Fire Island, who had been

training for the swim, passed away just a few days before the race took place.

The swim continued, with participants completing the challenge in memory of Maggie. It was later renamed The Maggie Fischer Memorial Great South Bay Cross Bay Swim.

With 100 swimmers, 100 kayakers, volunteers, spectators and a dozen boats to guide the way, the Maggie Fischer Cross Bay Swim is the event of the year not to miss. With Mary and Bob Fischer (Maggie’s parents) and the Cross Bay Swim committee working tirelessly around the clock, it is of no surprise the tremendous success the race achieves each year.

Memorial Great South Bay Cross Bay Swim is a fundraiser contributing to the Hospice Care Network’s Children and Family Bereavement Program, as well as perpetuating a scholarship at St. Anthony’s High School in the memory of Maggie Fischer. Every athlete has a reason for swimming the bay, whether it’s in the memory of a loved one, raising money for charities, or for their own sense of accomplishment. It is truly a day that represents community, friendship and joy!

Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island on June 3rd, 2016.

PFC Gunther successfuly completed 13 weeks of intensive basic training at MCRD Parris Island as one of 57 recruits in Training Platoon 3046.

While in recruit training, PFC Gunther achieved the following: Lay Reader, Squad Leader and Sharp Shooter.

Following ten days home on leave, he will report to Camp Le-Jeune for one month at Military Combat Training, then Military Occupation Specialty School. PFC Gunther will be stationed in Brooklyn following training.

Among the seniors speaking were several WWII veterans as well as spouses of veterans who shared their memories of what it was like to be married to servicemen during the war.

by the seniors was both educational and inspirational,” said middle school social worker Shari Pennington, the student government adviser. “Many of our students expressed their gratitude for those who fought for our freedom and lost loved ones.”
