East Islip Proudly Brings Home 18 Medals At Special Olympics
East Islip once again competed at the Special Olympics New York Spring Games North, hosted by Farmingdale Middle School, earning a total of 18 medals.
The day prior to the Games, East Islip’s team of 10 athletes from both East Islip High School and East Islip Middle School gathered for their annual kickoff breakfast to meet their volunteers, cheer on their teammates and get last-minute training instruction from their coaches. Families and staff celebrated the studentathletes’ dedication to training and wished them good luck at the event.
The following morning, each athlete competed in two track and field events, which included the 50-meter dash, 100-meter dash, 400-meter run, 100-meter walk, wheelchair race, softball throw, Turbojav throw and shot put. Teammates Anthony
Agresta, Dale Ahlers, Donald Ahlers, Madeline Director, Danny D’Orio, Dan Kenedy, Jake Kozak, Julia Modico, Sara Spruyt and Christopher Urraro collectively won seven gold medals, five silver medals and six bronze medals, as well as two fourth-place showings. Every athlete on the team won a medal in one or both of his or her events.
Coaches Laura O’Donnell, Julie Susskind and Diane Wahrenburg trained the athletes for their events for two months prior to the competition. The team was supported by volunteers Christine O’Connell, Paula Brinker, Dave Kozak, Nonie Kozak, Bill Murphy, Jenny Murphy, Patty Murphy, Michele Pannacchione, Antonia Tuck, Donna Tuck and Elizabeth Wallace, who escorted the athletes throughout the day. The volunteers ensured that the athletes arrived at
events on time, ate meals throughout the day, stayed hydrated, rested before and after events, and provide all-around care for the athletes.
“With the help of our volunteer team, the coaches have more flexibility to bounce between events and check in on the entire team, and that’s the key to a successful day,” O’Donnell said. “I tell my athletes that medals aren’t given away, they are earned; We earn them with hard work, dedication and heart. I am very proud of what the team accomplished this year.”
“It is a pleasure and a privilege to work with our athletes,” Wahrenburg said. “I am proud of them for their personal accomplishments, but more so for how they support and care for one another. This is not just a team; it is a family.”

The Charity of the Month for June is America’s VetDogs
www.VetDogs.org/Neighbor
America’s VetDogs is a non-profit organization, headquartered in Smithtown. They train and provide service and guide dogs for veterans, activeduty military and first responders with disabilities.
This year they placed their 1000th service dog and reduced the waiting time to receive one from 2-3 years to 9-12 months. Long Island resident Nathan Gardner is one of many veterans who have benefited greatly from America’s VetDogs and he’s eager to share his experience in hopes that it inspire others whose lives could be changed with the help of a special canine friend.
Some years ago, Nathan, who comes from a family with a strong military background, got in a car accident. He was left without reliable transportation, which left him frustrated. He was faced with a lot of down time and eventually decided to visit a recruiting o ce in his spare time. “I walked into the Air Force recruitment o ce, because I knew I liked what they could o er me.” He soon joined and became part of the Air Force Security Forces. “I actually ended up loving the job, loving the career. I was very happy with it.”
and was able to be placed with a service dog at no cost. He met and trained with his service dog, Kenzo, in February of 2022.
“It had gotten to the point where I would lock up, fall to the ground and not be able to move,” he explained. “So Kenzo has been trained to get me help. Training with him has been a life-changing experience. He has taught me how to handle myself and my disability appropriately and I really like how my mindset has shifted into a more positive place.”
Nathan has been able to flourish in ways he never could without a service dog. He recently graduated from St. Joseph’s University and will begin pursuing an MBA this fall. He has served as Vice President of the Long Island Campus Chapter of the Student Veterans of America and has new self confidence that he couldn’t imagine having years ago.

He served for 5 years, primarily working in nuclear weapons security, where he was required to wear full battle gear. This included a plated vest, all his equipment, two weapons, a bag full of gear and ammunition. “The weight of everything I was carrying ended up taking a toll on me.” He later found out he had a herniated disc, which has worsened since he left the service. Eventually, he developed two herniated discs, sciatic nerve damage and an atrophied calf muscle, which led to ankle problems.
Nathan learned of America’s VetDogs through the Veterans Resource Center at Su olk County Community College. “A lot of the things I was reading in the brochure matched what I was looking for and what I needed,” he said. “I wish I knew about the program sooner.”
Nathan reached out to America’s VetDogs
“Accomplishing these things means a lot to me in terms of what my future can now look like,” said Gardner, who attended his recent college graduation ceremony with Kenzo, his service dog. “I’m the first person in my family to get an undergraduate degree and I’m pursuing my graduate degree. I’m very proud of that. Getting Kenzo has been one of the best things for me.”
If you would like to learn how to apply for a service dog or volunteer with the organization, please visit www.VetDogs. org/Neighbor or call 631.930.9090.

10 High School Student Athletes Commit To Suffolk County Community College And Suffolk Sharks Basketball
They can now call themselves Sharks!
Ten student-athletes – eight men and two women - committed to Suffolk County Community College athletics at a signing
ceremony attended by the new Sharks, their family, friends, and coaches. They were joined by college President Dr. Edward Bonahue and athletics officials and administrators. The
College’s mascot Finn also joined the celebration at the college’s Brookhaven Gymnasium on the Ammerman Campus in Selden.
“Today you are making a commitment to Suffolk athletics,
and we are making a commitment to you,” said Suffolk County Community College Associate Dean of Athletics and Special Events Neftali Collazo, “and our approach is weighted heavily
toward academics and graduation because that is ultimately what we are here for. We want studentathletes to leave Suffolk County Community College with a college degree.” Collazo said.

In recognition of National Volunteer Month
– April – PSEG Long Island celebrates its employees who support their neighbors throughout the year through community service.
During the year and throughout the month of April, PSEG Long Island employees enjoy giving back to their communities. “In order for success to be possible, we must all show up, stand up and speak up if we want to stand out as a community,” Cameron said. “By being your best self and treating others as you would like to be treated, you will be a role model, set an example, be there for each other and hold each other accountable to create the best environment for all.”
“Mr. Cameron is kind, caring, funny and helpful, and these are just a few of the millions of words
“Mr. Cameron has worked to develop programs and support systems to meet the diverse learning needs of all students at CRES,” Islip Board of Education trustee Laura Rogacki said. “I am continually impressed by his broad knowledge and his ability to predict and respond to the needs of CRES families and students. $23,000 a year in savings* from lighting upgrades means more of this for Long Island.
For rebate information, visit PSEGLINY.com/Business.
When the nonprofit Canine Companions requested a free energy assessment, we discovered that installing LED fixtures and other energy efficiency measures could save them nearly $2,000 a month. And with available PSEG Long Island rebates, the installation was affordable. Today, those changes have meant more funds for the mission of providing service dogs to Long Islanders with disabilities. And that means a better Long Island for us all. *Actual
