New Ground is a non-profit organization that helps to break the cycle of homelessness right here in Nassau and Suffolk counties. Since opening their doors in 1991, New Ground has seen over 80% of the families they have served “graduate” from their programs self sufficient and in permanent stable housing. New Ground empowers children, parents and Veterans to achieve their goals so that they can secure a brighter future for generations to come!

There are plenty of success stories of people who benefited from their services.

One in particular I’d like to spotlight is Nina’s. Nina was a single mother with one son. They both had a chronic illness that significantly impacted their health. She had struggled in the past to establish a life for her family because of the unpredictable nature of their health. All New Ground families and Veterans require a unique approach and plan of action, but this was considerably greater for Nina. She needed supports put in place to ensure her family’s future despite the ongoing need for unexpected lengthy breaks from employment.

New Ground helped Nina to secure part time employment that was flexible, willing to adjust her schedule when she or her son suddenly required hospitalization or recovery time at home. Nina did significant work with her Social Worker on budgeting, creating a savings and developing strategies to adjust her spending if her household income suddenly decreased for

weeks at a time. New Ground assisted her with applying and obtaining certain benefits her family was eligible for because of their chronic illness. This included a housing choice voucher, allowing Nina to attain a market rent apartment while she paid an affordable portion of the rent based on her household income.

After just under four years, Nina and her son successfully graduated into permanent housing. An apartment was found in the same neighborhood where their program apartment was located, ensuring Nina’s continued easy commute to work and her son’s continuation in the school district he had only recently entered.

As you can see, New Ground is a huge help to the homeless community on Long Island and is there for those in need. They are currently in need of volunteers to help out in various areas of their organization. If you have a background in Education and wish to help tutor individuals out of their Levittown Main Office, the opportunity is available! You can also get involved with one of their Event Committees to help coordinate one of their upcoming special events, or with their Program Committee, which meets quarterly to review overall programs and services.

Another Organization You Can Get Involved With: Organics Today Farm www.OrganicsTodayFarms.com Organics Today Farm is a small organic farm is East Islip, which grows non GMO organic produce that you can trust! Their farmstand is open to the public every day with fresh picked organic produce! Their owner Mike runs various programs for the community such as Pregnant Drives, Field Trips, Volunteer Opportunities, Gardening Classes and Bee-Keeping Classes! Their Work For Food program is also another way the community can become involved with the farm. This program allows people to volunteer their time and contribute as few or as many hours as desired, in replace for a bundle of fresh organic food! There are many duties that can be performed on the farm and Organics Today Farm is accepting new volunteers at the moment!

Detective’s Legacy Honored The 5th Ave. bridge over the Southern State Parkway was renamed the Detective John E. Thomas Sr. Memorial Bridge in honor of the late detective.

The Bay Shore native, who previously served in the United States Navy during WWII, began his career in law enforcement in the Brightwaters Police Department, and was the first African American policeman in the Suffolk County Police Department.

Among Det. Thomas’ many accolades, was his heroism for rescuing two young children from a burning house where 5 people perished. He was subsequently named Policeman of the Year and was promoted to Detective.

Det. Thomas worked in the Community Relations Bureau in the Bay Shore community.

Following his retirement from the police department, John E.

Thomas, Sr. became the Director of Security, of the Bay Shore School District for more than a decade.

“The legacy of Det. John E. Thomas Sr. will live on for generations to come through this bridge renaming,” said Islip Supervisor Angie Carpenter. “He was a pioneer, a family man and a pillar of the Bay Shore community,” she concluded.

Dance Connection of Islip recently held it’s 30th Annual Recital at Holy Trinity Diocesan High School in Hicksville.

Suffolk County Legislator Tom Cilmi honored the studio by addressing the students, staff and audience.

The studio brought back audience favorites, including their National Title Winning precision tap number “Walking on Sunshine” and their Recital Company performance of a medley from Disney’s “The Lion King”. During this past year the studio has been taking opportunities, especially during their

studio Spirit Week and on social media to reflect on everything they have accomplished together over the years.

“Our whole studio staff, students, and Dance Connection families are thrilled to be putting together our 30th Annual Recital. Its been great fun to reminisce and relive the moments that have made us laugh, or inspired us and to look back at how far we have come together as a studio. Selected For Colors Of LI East Islip High School students Jessica Montijo and Cammi Shaw were recently selected to have their work showcased in the 21st annual Colors of Long Island student art exhibit at Stony Brook’s Long Island Museum.

Montijo is currently enrolled in Daniel Figliozzi’s Advanced Placement Studio Art class.

Long Island beautifully captures Long Island’s wildlife and landscape,” said Figliozzi. “She is an amazing photographer and designer and is one of the most hardworking students I’ve ever worked with.”

FTK Holds 22nd Annual Gala East Islip’s For the Kids Foundation held its 22nd annual Gala, themed “Sunset on the Bay,” recently at Land’s End in Sayville. For this year’s event, replete with the traditional raffles and fine dining, the honorees were Timber Point Elementary

School teacher Teresa Frisina and East Islip High School teacher Bridget Lopiccolo, both recognized as Educator Advocates of the Year, and Suffolk County Legislator Tom Cilmi, recognized as Community Advocate of the Year.

The Gala serves as FTK’s primary fundraising event.

Since its formation, the organization has donated well over $1 million for educational programs and resources to benefit East Islip’s students.

Meier Accepted To Naval Academy East Islip High School senior Timothy Meier recently was accepted to attend the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland this fall. The future Navy man, whose eventual career goal is mechanical engineering,

went through a challenging application process, including obtaining recommendations from Congressman Pete King and Sen. Charles Schumer.

“My brother is in the Navy, where he went through medical school,

so that got me interested,” said Meier. “I’ve been thinking about the Navy since middle school, and ever since then, it evolved into going to the Naval Academy.”

Learning Self-Direction With Dream House Project Islip Middle School sixth graders in the EXCEL gifted program recently completed a Dream House assignment, intended to examine the role architecture plays in our world and teach selfdirected work habits of time management skills, work ethic, planning,

craftsmanship and creativity.

The students first learned about scale, creating blueprints from scratch. They were encouraged to use recycled materials as well as including elements of their individual personalities in the designs, including their

hobbies and preferences in lighting and color. Finally, the students were asked to self-reflect about what they learned about themselves from the project, including analysis of their work ethic, as they were allowed to set their own due dates for all components of the assignment.
