I recently had the pleasure of attending the 2017 Press Club of Long Island Media Awards; this year, not only as a member of the Board of Directors, but as an award recipient.

Our Seasons Magazine was honored with second place in the Best Magazine category, a proud moment for our fledgling publication.

While there, I had the opportunity to chat with several local journalists in attendance about topics ranging from the state of the media as a whole to our own publication’s role in the journalism community on Long Island. It brought to light the question of what, exactly, South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers’ mission has been since 1953, and how very unique a position we fill in the wider landscape of community weeklies.

We have always categorized

ourselves as somewhat of a “hybrid” publication; far more news content than a shopper, but without the editorial staff of, say, a subscription-based community newspaper like those found in so many small towns in our area. While this description might be confusing to some, upon further explanation at the awards dinner, I saw the familiar nod of recognition – oh, that’s a pretty nice little niche you have there… Yes, yes it is.

As such, we invite the readers, those community members whom we serve, to contribute their own happenings, photos, upcoming events and more – all with the notion that, at no cost to them, they can be a part of our next publication.

Parents, teachers, coaches and scouting leaders are all welcome to participate in publicizing those individual

East Islip Middle School’s library held a contest to guess the weight of April the giraffe’s newborn calf.

The Animal Adventure Park near upstate Binghamton had been holding a contest to name April’s baby. On April 15th, April delivered a healthy calf named Oliver, weighing 129 lbs.

Bloom and seniors Defne Duyku and Taylor Kozak received second place in the Photo Essay category for their work on The Broadcaster’s November issue centerfold, depicting photo highlights from the school’s homecoming.

For three of The Broadcaster’s staff members, the night was especially successful.

Sophomore Victoria Keenan and seniors Michael Dondero and Kozak walked away with four awards each in a wide variety of categories.

Keenan garnered first place in both the Arts ReviewFilm and Opinion-Pop Culture categories for her articles “A New Adventure on the Great Wide Movie Screen: A Beauty and the Beast Review” and “It’s a Tale Keeping Up With New Times.” She also received second place in the ceremony’s Storytelling category, giving readers a glimpse of her summer adventures in “Ithaca College Makes the Summer of a Lifetime,” and a thirdplace nod for her piece “The Heart Behind Organ Donations” in the Short Feature category.

The hardworking staff of East Islip High School’s The Broadcaster student newspaper proudly took home 23 awards from the Long Island Press High School Journalism Awards ceremony, hosted at Hofstra University on May 30th. Prizes were given in 106 different categories.

The night was a success for both the Broadcaster staff and individual members. The Broadcaster itself earned an honorable mention for Newspaper of the Year, won second place in both the LayoutSection category, for its sports section, and in the Layout-Issue category, for the paper’s February 2017 issue.

Senior Sarah Hillman took home the first award of the night, winning third place in the Arts ReviewBook Review category for her critique “Flaming Over Firestarter.” Junior Cierra Colon was next to receive an award, taking first place in the Arts Review- Local Music category for her article “Meet Long Island’s Newest Knockout Band: Nexus.” Carla Garavito, another senior, won third place in the Arts and Entertainment category for her recap of the Oscars in “A Wrong Winner Overshadows the Oscars.”

Pond Day On a summery Friday in late May, student members of Islip High School’s Keep Islip Clean Club celebrated their 11th annual Pond Day event with a number of important environmental projects that benefited the community.

This year, students built an “insect hotel”” out of stacked wooden pallets and recyclable materials.

According to the club’s adviser, Wayne Mennecke, such insect hotels provide places for beneficial insects and pollinators to hide in a garden. Most insect hotels consist of several different sections that offer shelter or refuge for many types of insects, providing them with nesting facilities, particularly during winter.

After the completion of

the hotel, KIC students released 200 ladybugs into the courtyard.

Students also repaired a swale drainage system leading into Pardees Pond next to the campus tennis courts. Swales filter rainwater from the parking lot before it runs off into the pond. Toxins, pollutants and oil from cars will be removed from the water as it trickles back into the lake and drains to the Great South Bay. Additionally, students reinstalled 10 duck nesting boxes in the lake and beautified the gardens in the courtyard area, assisted by district parents Ivy Englehardt and Ken Phalen. A Lowe’s Toolbox for Education grant helped pay for many of the

building supplies.

The KIC Club is affiliated with the Town of Islip’s Keep Islip Clean program.

Each year, high schools across the township elect junior commissioners who are sworn in during an official ceremony. These students represent their community by sharing projects with other students from across Islip during monthly meetings.

Through this leadership program, students serve their community and act as positive role models for others. For the 2016-2017 school year, Islip High School has five junior commissioners who serve as KIC Club officers, often guiding other students in the club and assisting Mennecke.

Competing against 15 other teams from Suffolk, Nassau and New York City, East Islip High School’s Mock Trial team took second place in the recent New York State Law Day Tournament, hosted by Northport High School.

East Islip was represented by students Shannon Dodenhoff, Joshua Koretz, Ewere Emma McGaugh, Tyler O’Neill and Christian Thomesen, accompanied by their coach, social studies teacher Patsy Lester.

The civil law tournament, now in its 43rd year, was sponsored

by the New York State Bar Association and the Law, Youth, and Citizenship Committee. Teams of five students were given 12 minutes to prepare a legal case based on a one-page summary of facts. At the end of the 12-minute prep period, the students had to argue the case as attorneys and witnesses against another school’s team.

A coin toss determined which team was plaintiff and defense during each round. This year’s cases included negligence, defamation, assault and battery, product liability, vicarious liability and

breach of contract.

East Islip’s team went undefeated through five rounds, picking off strong teams such as Syosset and Plainview-Old Bethpage.

Facing hosts Northport, they came in second in the championship round, which featured a judging panel that included New York State Bar Association Past-President A. Thomas Levin, District Court Judge Hon. James C. Hudson, Professor Thomas Schweitzer of Touro Law School, and Queens Assistant District Attorney Josh Mandel.

Scholarship Winner Bay Shore High School senior Carl Siciliano has been selected as the second annual recipient of the Honorable Peter Fox Cohalan Scholarship in American History for Islip Town High School Seniors. The scholarship, awarded annually by the Robert David Lion Gardiner Foundation, is granted to a graduating senior in Islip Town who will pursue an undergraduate degree with a concentrated study in American History and/or American Government.

Carl will receive an Advanced Regents Diploma when he graduates in June 2017. He has distinguished himself as a student of history throughout his time at Bay Shore High School. In addition to attending events with veterans at the school, he is an amateur collector of World War Two memorabilia. Carl has also shown himself to be a leader among his peers and in his community. He achieved the rank of Eagle Scout in 2014. He has served as a Cub Scout Den Chief since 2011, in addition to holding numerous other leadership positions within local Boy Scout organizations. Carl is also an avid bowler, an advanced downhill skier and plays both the clarinet and bass clarinet.

Carl’s winning essay, entitled How the Great War Was Secondary Compared to the Influenza Epidemic of 1918, demonstrated analytical ability beyond his years.

Carl plans to attend Suffolk County Community College in the fall and later transfer to St. Joseph’s College. He

hopes to become a history teacher and to someday return to Bay Shore High School to mentor future generations of history students.

His family roots, which can be traced back to the American Revolution, include five generations in public life with four generations holding distinguished positions on New York State high courts. A former Islip Town Supervisor (1971-1979) and Suffolk County Executive (1979-1986), Cohalan recently retired from the New York State Supreme Court where he served for more than 25 years. Actively involved in historic preservation for four decades, the Honorable Peter Fox Cohalan is currently serving as the Suffolk County Historian. He also serves on the Board of Trustees of the Robert David Lion Gardiner Foundation.

The Robert David Lion Gardiner Foundation’s mission is inspired by Robert David Lion Gardiner’s lifelong passion for New York history. Until his death in 2004, Robert David Lion Gardiner was the 16th Lord of the Manor of Gardiner’s Island, NY. The Gardiner Family and their descendants have owned Gardiner’s Island since 1639 by way of a royal grant from King Charles I of England. The Gardiner Family has also had strong ties to the Town of Islip since the 1700s. The Robert D.L.
