A trio of Islip High School video production students – Chaiti Paul, Chrystle Stewart and Stephania Teran – were recently named Long Island regional winners in The Greatest Save Teen PSA Program’s video contest for their entry “Abduction.” The program is sponsored by KinderVision, a charity of Major League Baseball.

The students and their technology teacher Mike Reilly were invited to a New York Mets game, where they were recognized during a pregame ceremony in front of a crowd of 30,000.

Their PSA entry will now move onto the national competition, giving them the opportunity to earn scholarship money and additional recognition.

Islip High School students recently worked on an exciting project with technology teacher Jesse Eilbeck, constructing personalized epoxy skateboard decks.

“The processes for this assignment included designing the deck, cutting out their design, coloring, spray painting, and finally epoxy,” said Eilbeck. “The epoxy itself was the main idea behind this project, because it allows the students to take those finished skateboard decks and put them into use. The next part is to attach trucks and wheels, the hardware component, and for them to grip tape the decks of their boards so they can go out and enjoy them, skate around on them, do what kids do.”

While speaking with Robyn, she shared a great story about a routine visit with her dental hygienist, Sue. Sue was explaining how arthritis was really becoming a problem in her hands. Memory Project

The Charity of the Month for June is: New Ground www.newground.org

New Ground is a non-profit organization that helps to break the cycle of homelessness right here in Nassau and Suffolk counties.

This organization began all from the vision of an educator that was committed to providing a safe haven for those living in poverty.

This educator saw that shelters were only providing a short-term fix to a problem that needed a real, lasting solution. After envisioning an organization that provided a holistic suite of support services while empowering participants to help themselves, she founded New Ground in 1991 to do just that.

New Ground, based in Levittown, offers Veterans and families the following main programs to truly help them conquer homelessness: their Long Term Housing Program, their JumpStart Program and their Veterans Program. Their services include Adult Workshops, Career Development, Education Advocacy, Education Assistance, Financial Literacy, Reading All-Stars, Special Memories and Tutoring.

New Ground’s JumpStart Program launched in 2012 to expand these critical services to additional homeless families on their wait-list for the Long Term Housing Program. This Program is open to any homeless families, not just Veterans, and is intended to give families a jump-start on accomplishing their goals. When these families later transition into the Long Term Housing Program, they are well on their way toward realizing the steps needed to secure an independent future.

A primary social worker is assigned to all families in both of these programs once they start with the organization. New Ground social

The New Ground Veterans Program is another very important part to their organization. Homeless Veterans can get placed in reduced cost housing and be provided with intensive social work and education services by New Ground to assist them with achieving goals in the areas of employment, financial literacy, education, career development, parenting, basic life skills, education advocacy and more. In 2016 their services were expanded so they can serve an even greater number of Veteran households. Through collaboration with the Northport VA Center, New Ground began offering their programs to over 400 homeless Veteran households in their Veteran Affairs Supportive Housing Program.

Since opening their doors, New Ground has seen over 80% of the families they have served “graduate” from their programs self sufficient and into permanent stable housing.

New Ground empowers children, parents and Veterans to achieve their goals so that they can secure a brighter future for generations to come!

New Ground is a huge help to the homeless community on Long Island and is there for those in need. Their Long Term Housing Program combines affordable housing with New Ground’s intensive services. Currently this includes a home in Huntington with two homeless Veteran families, a home in Bethpage under renovations and plans to add more housing units. For 3-5 years, New Ground provides all the needed educational, vocational and counseling services to the family members living in this housing, as well as basic needs and general support. Residents also take time with a social worker and put together a plan of how they can reach their goals. All residents pay an affordable rent and although New Ground assists them with various costs and hurdles they may face, they truly get the feeling of being a responsible homeowner.

Dance Connection is proud to introduce this year’s inductees into the National Honor Society of Dance Arts.

The National Honor Society for Dance Arts™ (NHSDA) is a program of the National Dance Education Organization, created to recognize outstanding artistic merit, leadership, and academic achievement in students studying dance in public and private schools in K-12 education, dance studios, cultural/community centers, performing arts organizations, and postsecondary education.

Students applying for consideration must meet requirements for both dance and academic areas of study.

The inductees and their guests were treated to guest speaker Emily Hart-Lopez, a professional performing artist, dancer, and dance/ fitness instructor based in New York City who spoke to them about the influence that dance had on her life, even beyond the studio and stage, as well as what it is like to pursue a career in the arts. Afterward, everyone enjoyed a reception in the studio to celebrate.

finishing seventh overall.

Two golfers, captain Sofia Ferrezza and Sophia Stryjewski, made the initial cut to return to compete on the second day as individuals for an All-

State spot. In a field of 103 golfers, Stryjewski finished 13th, six strokes off the All-State mark; Ferrezza finished in 19th, 12 strokes off the cut.

Middle Schoolers Show Support

Supported by a crowd of cheering, poster-waving students, Chris Pendergast came to East Islip Middle School on May 8 as part of his 22nd annual Ride for Life event. Pendergast, a former elementary school teacher and ALS patient, has spent the last two decades dedicating his life

to raise money to help find a cure for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, known as Lou Gehrig’s disease.

Pendergast previously helped the school’s National Junior Honor Society and Leaders Club kick off their respective fundraising efforts with a March 13 assembly for

eighth graders. Members of these clubs then sold baseballs as a competition between grades for a night of no homework, and social studies teacher Melissa Henderson presented Pendergast and his foundation with a $1,000 check at the Ride for Life.

Suffolk Hall Of Fame Congratulations to Bay Shore Schools graduate and current Board of Education President Guy Leggio! Mr. Leggio was inducted into the Suffolk Sports Hall of Fame as part of the 2019 class of inductees. The honor recognizes the many years he has dedicated to coaching and mentoring young wrestlers in East Islip, Bay Shore and across Long Island. The program he built at East Islip High School has been one of the most successful wrestling programs in the history of Long Island wrestling.

Mr. Leggio joins his father, Jumper Leggio, in the Hall of Fame.

“I was proud to stand

with Guy Leggio as he was inducted into the Suffolk Sports Hall of Fame,” said Superintendent Joseph Bond. “Mr. Leggio is the embodiment of the Bay Shore spirit. He selflessly

gives his time to impact and improve the lives of students in Bay Shore and beyond, by serving on the school board, helping wrestlers develop their craft and so much more.”
