econd-graders at Islip’s Maud S. Sherwood Elementary School spent five weeks on a nonfiction writer’s workshop unit, working vigorously to create their own nonfiction animal books. Each child utilized a variety of sources in researching specific details about his or her selected animal. Reflecting the key features of nonfiction, the students’ books included tables of contents, glossaries, sources, diagrams and maps.

GOSPELFEST SELECTION - Karina Vartanian, an 11 year-old from Beach Street Middle School in West Islip, was selected for a fourth year as one of six Junior vocal soloists from the tri-state area for the McDonald’s Gospelfest 2015, which took place on May 9th at the Prudential Center Arena in Newark, New Jersey.

Lindenhurst Class of 1970 Reunion Set A 45th Reunion BBQ for the Lindy Class of 1970 is planned for Saturday, August 1st, at Lindenhurst Fireman’s Pavilion, from 12 to 4 p.m. Cost is $30 for age 21 and over, $25 for under age 21; kids under 5 are free. This event includes a great BBQ menu and dessert, wine, beer and soda.

Planting Seeds For The Future Suffolk County Legislator Steve Stern got “down and dirty” to help a first grade class at Mary G. Clarkson School in Bay Shore build a sustainable rain garden at their school.

With shovels in hand, the first graders dug through soil and planted flowers at the entrance of the school building that students, teachers and parents will enjoy for years to come.

However, the rain garden doesn’t just help beautify the school. It also serves an important environmental purpose.

Planted with proper plants, near a down spout, rain gardens absorb excess water.

This helps to

mitigate runoff and helps lessen contaminates that enter the ground water.

Legislator Stern coordinated the project through the Cornell University Cooperative Extension of Suffolk County, which supplied the materials and instruction for Mrs. Rebore’s first grade class.

“Our young people are the future of Suffolk County, which is why it’s so important to ensure that we do our part to preserve our environment for them and teach our children the skills needed to do the same for future generations,” Legislator Stern said. “I thank

the Cornell University Cooperative Extension of Suffolk County for making this project possible, as well as Principal Leticia García and first grade teacher Diana Rebore for giving us the opportunity to work with our bright, young students.”

Second-graders at Islip’s Maud S. Sherwood Elementary School spent five weeks on a nonfiction writer’s workshop unit, working vigorously to create their own nonfiction animal books.

Each child utilized a variety of sources – from other books to magazines and the Internet – in

researching specific details about his or her selected animal. Reflecting the key features of nonfiction, the students’ books included tables of contents, glossaries, sources, diagrams and maps.

“When children are excited about learning, the results are truly amazing,” said teacher

Robb Le Vien, whose class commemorated the workshop with a booksharing celebration. “My class was motivated from day one and worked hard during each session of writer’s workshop. I could not be prouder of the outstanding work the class produced.”

Toys Bring Joy Dedicated students in Brian Heyanka’s eighthgrade classes at East Islip Middle School recently used their technology skills to manufacture over 75 toys that were donated to North Shore LIJ-Southside Hospital to bring joy to sick children.

The students started the project by conducting research in the computer lab. Each of 15 groups of students chose an age demographic that they wanted to design a unique toy for, which included chalk iPhones, miniature helicopters, bowling, springboard basketball shot, paddle ball, whale-

shaped crayon holders, stacking rings, magnetic fishing games, tic-tac-toe, labyrinths, maze games, peg board games, knock hockey, and laser-engraved puzzles and matching games.

The eighth-graders created their own detailed drawings including measurements, materials and other important information regarding their designs. They learned about manufacturing techniques in order to mass-produce the toys, creating templates and using tools and machines that included a band saw, scroll saws, belt and disk

sanders, miter saws, and a brand-new state-of-theart Full Spectrum Laser engraver.

Immersing themselves in the mass production process over several weeks, they even found ways to increase their efficiency and made sure every toy was ready for delivery to Southside.

“My students were able to think critically and use problem solving skills while learning about volunteerism, demonstrating good character and truly making a difference in their community,” said Heyanka.

East Islip High School junior Harrison Gieraltowski has been named the winner of this year’s Rensselaer Medal for his superlative academic achievement in mathematics and science.

This minimum $15,000 per year merit scholarship, which has

awarded for more than 90 years, is guaranteed for four years for each medalist who applies, is accepted and chooses to enroll at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute located in Troy, New York. The award honors academic achievement and serves to inspire students

to pursue careers in science, engineering and technology.

Gieraltowski’s dedication towards his studies are truly unique.

Without being enrolled in the course itself, her used self-preparation last year to take and score highly on the AP Computer Science exam.

“I am extremely proud of this young man for staying focused and motivated throughout the last three years at East Islip,” said his guidance counselor, Christopher Boehler.

Helping Hands Summer Drive Helping Hands in West Islip, Inc., a tax-exempt charity founded by local resident Jennifer Gallozzi in 1990 to serve the needy of Suffolk County, will be collecting school supplies loose or in new/gentlyused backpacks, totes and decorated bags before 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday, June 16th, at the West Islip Fire Department, 309 Union Boulevard in West Islip (across from American Legion Hall).

They also need treats to help children finish this school year and prepare for the next and to get through

the summer when school lunches and play supplies are not available, such as non-perishable kids meals (granola bars, cereal boxes, fruit cups, fliptop tuna, crackers, soups, parmalat, juice boxes), small toys, flip-flops, beach towels, jump ropes, balls and chalk.

The Gift of Time By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Time. It’s the one thing we never seem to have quite enough of. There is always a deadline, a constant reminder of what we have yet to accomplish within a given period.

From the moment we are born, there is a schedule to follow, a time frame to adhere to, expectations to be met – rarely a moment of peace.

From classroom bell schedules and term paper due dates to newspaper and magazine press schedules, my life has pretty much been one giant revolving deadline from kindergarten on

up. And, while generally on time for such things, my reluctance to be a “morning person,” coupled with a (slightly) over-the-top sense of perfectionism, occasionally creates obstacles, self-imposed as they may be.

Sometimes, you just need to take a collective deep breath and let things go. Choose your battles wisely; smile and accept the rest. It’s not giving up. It’s not even giving in. It’s simply making a conscious decision to rise above with an eye on the greater goal, whatever that may be.

It’s not always easy. And

for those like me who tend to micromanage and overanalyze, it can be nearly impossible to let go and relinquish control of the day-today monotonies which, together, make up the great majority of life. But once you set the wheels in motion, it’s amazing how truly freeing it is.

Simply live and let live. We can only control ourselves; not others, not our surroundings. The sooner we realize this and stop trying, the better. At the end of the day, you might even find you have more time to do the things you truly want to.
