Young Leaders Four East Islip fifthgraders –John F. Kennedy Elementary School’s Ryan Flad and Erin McCarthy, and Ruth C. Kinney Elementary School’s Thomas Costarelli and Kara Marshall – recently earned the annual Physical Education Leadership award from the Suffolk Zone Chapter of the New York State Association for Health, Physical Education,

Recreation and Dance.

Also recognized were East Islip Middle School eighth graders Anthony Agresta, Anthony Kohler and Joy Peterson. The seven students were honored at the NYS AHPERD awards ceremony, held on May 2nd at Bay Shore Middle School.

“These students are leaders in the classroom and have the necessary

knowledge to establish and maintain an active lifestyle,” said Stephen Restivo, East Islip’s director of health, physical education and athletics.

“They understand how physical education can enhance their performance both in the classroom and in the gymnasium as well. Dollars raised through Babes Against Cancer supports the American Cancer Society’s work to save lives and provide support to everyone impacted by cancer -- from research to education, prevention to diagnosis, and treatment to recovery.

year, the Top Award was presented to the Glen Oaks Club committee for raising a total of $236,326 in the past season. The runner-up was Fresh Meadow Country Club, who have collectively raised more than $2.8 M since the inception of the Babes campaign.

Highlight of the day was the presentation of the Sandy Award, named in memory of Sandy Zuckerman Rothstein, a breast cancer survivor who started the first tournament at The Muttontown Club in 1972. This year’s award was presented to Sandy Seltzer of Roslyn for her outstanding contribution to the Babes Against Cancer fundraising efforts at Fresh Meadow Country Club.

About Babes Against Cancer: In its 46th year, BABES AGAINST CANCER tournaments are organized and run by volunteer committees guided by

an event Chairperson.

Events are primarily golf tournaments, but tennis, bridge, Mah Jongg and bridge are all played to raise funds. Club events and income outcomes vary widely, ranging from $1,500 to over $200,000 per club, for a total of over 1.3 million in 2017.

The Society provides a tournament guide with instructions and fundraising tips, gifts for all participants, course signage, prizes, club-wide contests plus any support the volunteer Chairs require.

BABES AGAINST CANCER is always looking for new clubs or communities, public or private, to join the program.

The American Cancer Society Kicked Off the 46th Year of Babes Against Cancer this week uniting more than 30 Golf and Country Clubs across Long Island to raise funds and awareness to support breast and prostate cancer.

The event raises more than $1M annually and the collective support has surpassed $30 million dollars, making it the largest American Cancer Society fundraiser of its kind, thanks to the joint efforts of over 600 volunteers and 5,000 participants at 30 country clubs in the New York

WELCOME TO THE JUNGLE - Jungle Bob came to visit the second grade classes at Brook Avenue School. The students loved their hands on learning experience about reptiles, amphibians, insects and arachnids. Students not only learned facts about the “misunderstood” animals, they got to touch and hold them. Some of the animals the students were able to interact with were a tarantula spider, a blue tounge skink, alligator, a corn snake and an african spurred tortoise and bullfrog. It was one of the best in-school field trips Brook Avenue has had!

In July 2010, the Dignity for All Students Act was signed into law to combat bias-based bullying, discrimination and harassment in public schools, and to ensure the right of every public school student to learn in a safe, welcoming, and caring environment.

Eastern Suffolk BOCES, the Suffolk County InterFaith Anti-Bias Task Force, and the Suffolk County School Superintendents Association joined together and have been working in collaboration to ensure the guidelines and goals established by DASA are being effectively implemented in public schools throughout Suffolk County.

One of their joint initiatives was to facilitate

a forum, which coincided with the fifth anniversary of the introduction of DASA, where Suffolk County school districts’ Dignity Act coordinators and district DASA coordinators could share their best practices in the areas of disseminating information to staff, students, and parents; the training of staff and students; prevention and response to events; and response to violations.

Through an open dialogue, forum attendees shared and received valuable insight into effective practices, and the tools to enhance their own processes. “We believe that the best product is created through collaboration, and we are grateful to the Suffolk County InterFaith Anti-Bias Task

Force for sponsoring a forum where the best thinkers from Suffolk County came together,” said Suffolk County School Superintendents Association President Lars Clemensen. “From this collaboration was born a resource guide of best practices in the county for making sure students are free from bullying, harassment, and discrimination.”

While there is much good work going on in schools across Suffolk County in compliance with DASA, there is always more that can be done and shared. As an outgrowth of this successful forum, a DASA resource guide, which is a compilation of best practices utilized in Suffolk County public

schools for the past five years, was created. This comprehensive resource guide, which is being shared with all Suffolk County school districts, will serve as an informative and valuable tool to support and enhance the work being done to implement DASA and protect the rights of all children attending public schools.

“The Dignity for All Students Act defines the necessary components to ensure that students are treated with dignity within the school walls and at school events,” said ESBOCES Chief Operating Officer Julie Davis Lutz, Ph.D. “It is our hope that this resource guide and the ongoing work that we do with students and staff

ensure that this happens in all aspects of their lives, both within and beyond the school doors.”

“This resource guide is a collaboration between the Suffolk County Human Rights Commission, the Suffolk County Anti-Bias Task Force, Eastern Suffolk BOCES and the Suffolk County School Superintendents Association,” said Suffolk County Human Rights Commission Chairman Rabbi Steven Moss. “As acts of bullying occur every day in schools, it is vital that schools provide a safe haven for those who have been bullied, a procedure to report these incidents, and then a method to deal with them by those in authority.

This useful resource guide will assist those school

personnel who want to understand how they can continue and improve their implementation of DASA for the sake of their students. A special and sincere thank you to all involved in this important project.”

Sharing is Caring I recently listened in on a rather interesting Press Club of Long Island panel discussion, highlighting the process which went into investigating a cold case that had gone unsolved for over 50 years on the east end of Long Island. The teamwork between reporters and the police department eventually resulted in the case being “cracked,” so to speak, and the unsolved murder put to rest.

I bring this up not because of my fascination with true crime stories; but rather, it brought to light the importance of a component often missing in many lines of work, in life as a whole … that of collaboration. Often, the focus is on independence, on doing things one’s own way, with little room for input from others. Cooperation is key – this a concept taught to us from the first day of kindergarten on up, earlier even, as we begin to learn the process of sharing our resources (even if those happen to be building blocks or Barbie dolls).

I don’t often have the

opportunity to cover events; but recently, I was privileged to take my journalistic tools into the field and exercise some of those reporting and photography skills honed in the lecture halls of college, even as far back as the grade school classroom.

As I stood on the tarmac at Republic Airport last week, borrowed camera in hand, anxiously awaiting the arrival of the U.S. Navy Blue Angels, I scanned the crowd assembled.

Veteran reporters mixed with fresh-faced interns, all waiting for a glimpse of the majestic planes.

Some carried smart phones; others set up elaborate tripods and fiddled with expensive lenses, all determined to capture that “perfect” shot upon landing.

Suddenly, there was a roar overhead. All attention was instantly focused on the sky, as cameras zoomed, record buttons were pushed and people jostled for a better angle. And then, just like that, they were gone, gliding to a landing on a distant runway before slowly taxiing toward us, where they would

eventually park for follow-up pilot interviews. All around, you heard the murmurings of Did you get the shot? and I thought they would be approaching from the other way… Can we get a do-over?

And in that mix of elation and disappointment as many realized they had not, in fact, captured much of anything in their respective frames, there emerged that collaboration I speak of – that natural instinct to cooperate for a common goal.

Phone numbers were exchanged, business cards swapped and contacts were instantly made, with promises to share footage and photos. After all, we were here for the same reason. No benefit to withholding information that, ultimately, we all desired to share with the masses.

We may not have cracked a case that morning, but we demonstrated on a much smaller scale the beauty of cooperation, of teamwork. The stunning fighter jets aside, that may have been the most beautiful sight of all.

Six Go to Special Olympics Six student-athletes from the Islip School District participated in the Special Olympics 2018 Spring Games South, hosted by Hampton Bays High School on May 6th. This is the second year that Islip’s students have competed in Special Olympics events.

Members of the Islip Booster Club, led by President Terry Going initiated and organized the

district’s Special Olympics activities, supported by Islip’s SEPTA. Volunteer coaches Dave Clapps, Marissa Peterson and Patty Whitehouse trained the student-athletes for the games. Islip students and staff also volunteered, supporting the students and their families at the event.

“The mission of the Special Olympics is to provide year-round sports

training and athletic completion in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities,” said Kate O’Callaghan, Islip’s executive director for student support services. “This gives them continuing opportunities to develop fitness and courage as they participate in the games with other Special Olympics athletes and the community.”

Police Week As part of participation in Police Week, students from East Islip High School’s career development occupational studies class visited Suffolk County Police Headquarters in Yaphank on May 7th.

During the event, officers demonstrated the many facets of the department, including the bomb squad, marine bureau, and emergency

service, crime scene, K9, COPE and aviation units.

The gave a tour of the police museum and 911 call center, and discussed issues such as seatbelt safety, traffic stops and how to become a police officer.

“What a terrific day for our students this was,” said CDOS teacher Bridget Lopiccolo. “It was perfect for students exploring careers, because they

were able to directly ask important questions about being a police officer.

The students also gained knowledge about how to help the police in an emergency situation. It is delightful to see that the SCPD is opening its doors to young people to learn about the law enforcement field.”

East Islip High School seniors donned formal wear for their turn on the runway at the school’s recent Fashion Show. The colorful event is sponsored annually by the Students Against Destructive Decisions club and PTSA to raise money for SADD and its worthwhile programs and scholarship.

The school’s teachers and numerous local

businesses partnered with the PTSA and SADD to donate to raffle baskets.

Cosmetology professionals Stephanie Domingo, Brynn Hlinko and Barbara Lhotan donated their services to do hair and makeup for the female models, RSVP Tuxedos of Bay Shore provided tuxes for the male models, and East Islip alumnus Joe Kiesel served as DJ.

“What a wonderful night this was,” said SADD adviser Bridget Lopiccolo.

“The students really rocked the ‘red carpet’ for a great cause. Special thanks to the PTSA for all their support and to the teachers for really helping to make this event a great success.”

Positive Affirmations

The Computer Graphic Arts students from the Islip Career Center in Oakdale recently created and adhered vinyl decals bearing positive messages to the risers of a staircase at the Sonderling High School in the Brentwood school district. Islip Career

Center (ICC) is an Eastern Suffolk BOCES school that provides special career education services to students with special education needs. The skills they obtain may help them to acquire entry-level employment in certain industries.

The decals featured such messages as, “Life is Beautiful,” “I am Courageous,” and “I am Calm, Relaxed and Peaceful.” ICC Computer Graphic Arts students first visited Sonderling last year to decorate a different staircase with similar messages of encouragement.

The project soon became a hit among students and staff, and ICC students returned for a second year to work their magic on another staircase. Said ESBOCES Teacher Assistant Jeffrey Mclary who accompanied the students to the Brentwood district, “This undertaking enabled our students to support fellow students in another high school. It is also a perfect example of projectbased learning, which is a hands-on exercise that gives students real-world experiences in the fields they are studying. This is a specialty of ESBOCES.”

To make students fully understand the impact of driving while impaired, the sheriff talked to students about the direct and indirect consequences of their actions. These included fines and attorney fees, losing their driver’s license, and the inconvenience and embarrassment of taking a bicycle to work and on dates.

State-of-the-art impairment goggles allowed students to experience firsthand the difficulty involved with operating a pedal-powered cart, walking in tandem with a partner through a short course outlined in cones, and even attempting to high five a friend. “The effects of the goggles never cease to amaze participating students and onlookers, which is exactly what we want with an exercise such as this,” said ESBOCES Social Worker Amy Roland-Scott.

KEEP ISLIP CLEAN - Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter recently met with Keep Islip Clean (KIC) representatives, Southside Hospital volunteers, and Northwell Health’s Vice President of Community Relations, Eddie Fraser, for the 5th annual Community Cleanup. The initiative is one of the many community cleanup projects KIC conducts throughout the year, and comes in honor of Earth Day 2018. Volunteers from KIC and Southside Hospital were out in force, removing garbage from the heavily littered area along Spur Drive South, from Saxon Avenue to Fifth Avenue, in Bay Shore. Over 65 bags of garbage were collected in total.

Showing Strength The Islip School District has once again been honored with the Best Communities for Music Education designation from the NAMM Foundation, recognizing’s Islip’s outstanding commitment to music education.

The Best Communities for Music Education designation, now in its 19th year, is awarded to districts that demonstrate

outstanding achievement in efforts to provide music access and education to all students. To qualify for the Best Communities designation, Islip answered detailed questions about funding, graduation requirements, music class participation, instruction time, facilities, support for the music program and community music-making programs.

Responses were verified with school

officials and reviewed by the Music Research Institute at the University of Kansas.

“Music instruction has always been a part of the fabric here in Islip,” said Vincent Green, director of fine and performing arts.

“Being recognized for our diligence on a national level strengthens our resolve to continue this important work.”

Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter, along with members of the Islip Town Board, recognized the Islip Elks 40th Anniversary of their ‘Youth in Government Day’ at the May Town Board meeting.

The Islip Elks have been instrumental in the education of youth throughout the Town of Islip and this week, for the 40th consecutive year, the Islip Elks returned to Town Hall along with 15 middle school students as part of their “Youth in Government Day.” The students discussed the inner-workings of local government before touring

the Town’s Recycling and Compost Facilities.

“Today’s youth are tomorrow’s leaders, and for 40 years, through their ‘Youth in Government Day,’ the Islip Elks have connected students with a close-up look at their local Town Government and its many departments,” said Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter. “It’s always a pleasure and a privilege to spend time with these bright, young students,” said the Supervisor.

Islip Elks Exalted Ruler Joe D’Angelo, along with James Kachadourian, Elks Secretary; Norman

Newkirk, Elks Loyal Knight; John Tramposch, Tresurer, were presented at the May Town Board meeting with a certificate on behalf of the Town Board, recognizing the Elks’ 40-year commitment to local youth. Chef Competition

Congratulations to the winning teams of the Iron Chef Competition held at the Islip Career Center.

The Islip Career Center is an Eastern Suffolk BOCES school that provides special career education services to students with special needs.

The skills students acquire may help them to obtain entry-level employment in certain industries. The assignment for students in this Introduction to Cooking

Program required them to perform numerous tasks designed to teach life and employment skills, both of which promote independence.

Those exercises included sourcing recipes online; developing a recipe theme with corresponding table signage and décor; adhering to a budget; following all recipe instructions; preparing the entrée, side dishes and condiments; and being able to answer judges’

questions. All recipes were assessed by a panel of school staff members and points were awarded based on various criteria, such as taste and presentation.

Said Chef Michael Frankson, Introduction to Cooking teacher, “Projectbased learning, such as this assignment, teaches indispensable life skills, as well as proficiency for possible entry-level employment in the food service industry.”

Raising Trout

Canine Careers students in Lisa Konnerth’s class at Islip Career Center spent the school year raising trout. Through a program named Trout Unlimited, the class obtained brook trout eggs and monitored their progress each day from when they hatched, throughout their growth in the classroom tank (which was insulated and kept at a cool 53 degrees), to their release in the Rattlesnake Creek in Oakdale. Islip Career Center is an Eastern Suffolk BOCES school that provides

special career education programs to students with special education needs.

The skills students learn may help them to obtain entry-level employment in certain industries.

Trout Unlimited is an American, non-profit organization dedicated to the conservation of freshwater streams and restoring trout and salmon populations to cold-water fisheries. The class received approximately 200 brook trout eggs through Trout Unlimited during the fall of 2017 and released those

fish that survived this spring. As they matured, the small hatchlings lived in a large tank in the classroom where students cared for them, studied them, learned about their habitats, and became active participants in environmental protection at the community level.

Said Konnerth, “My students learned about local wildlife and waterways with this project, which will work to their advantage as Long Island residents and, one day, as members of the regional workforce.”
