Home renovation projects can pay numerous dividends. Renovations can have a positive effect on resale value, make homes more livable for residents and, in some ways, make homes more affordable.

Renovation projects that aim to conserve energy can save homeowners substantial amounts of money. Such projects don’t often require considerable effort or even sizable financial investments, which can make homeowners skeptical as to just how much they can save after completing the project.

The scale of a project may have little to do with how much homeowners will save. For example, the U.S. Department of Energy notes that a relatively effortless task like turning back a thermostat between 7° and 10° F for eight hours per day can save homeowners as much as $83 per year. A more labor-intensive task like planting shade trees saves homeowners an average of between $35 and $119 per year.

When looking for ways to conserve energy around the house and save money, homeowners need not necessarily commit to expensive projects.

The DOE notes that the following are some energy-saving projects and details what homeowners can expect to save after completing them. While each individual project may not result in jaw-dropping savings, homeowners who follow many of these recommendations may end up saving more than $1,000 per year.

Girls On The Run Long Island To Hold Its First Virtual 5k In June

Local nonprofit Girls on the Run Long Island will be holding its first Virtual 5K run for free on June 20, 2020 open to all who wish to participate. Traditionally a run held at Hofstra University to conclude the organization’s 10-week program for girls, the Spring 5K became a virtual run in response to COVID-19 and social distancing regulations.

With options to complete the 3.1 mile distance at “your place, your pace,” kids and adults alike are welcome to participate at no cost to them. By registering for the run at www.gotrlongisland. org/5k, participants will receive free downloadable goodies, such as a race bib to decorate and a finisher’s certificate. GOTR Long Island prize packs will also be raffled off, chosen from those who have registered, on June 20.

Leading up to the run, GOTR Long Island will share

information about the run and fun activities on its social media channels, including Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter at @gotrlongisland.

This will include training for walking or running the 5K, indoor alternatives, and safety tips along with fun activities usually seen at a GOTR 5K. The traditional Happy Hair, kid-friendly hair coloring, and Bling Your Bib activities will be included. A schedule of events will be released at a later date for the June 20 run and will be shared on social media.

It should come as no surprise that the 54th annual Puerto Rican/Hispanic Day Parade in Brentwood, originally scheduled for Sunday, June 7, has been cancelled, a victim of the current COVID-19 pandemic. Also cancelled for the same reason is the 3rd Annual Downtown Central Islip Arts Festival, which had been planned for September.

However, Teatro Yerbabruja has announced two replacement events that will be held remotely. Teatro Yerbabruja, the parade and festival organizer for the past several years, is a nonprofit

arts organization that facilitates socio-economic development on Long Island, particularly in its core “triangle” service area of Central Islip, Brentwood and Bay Shore/North Bay Shore, unfortunately the epicenter of Long Island’s Coronavirus cases.

The first replacement event is planned with the always-supportive La Fiesta Radio, for Sunday, June 7 from noon to 3PM, the exact day and time that the Parade in Brentwood would have taken place. This will explore the Latinx experience on Long Island as seen through

the Parade’s 54 year history until today’s extraordinary challenges and reasons for celebration. (Access via Yerbabruja Facebook Live) The second such event is planned for September and will be a grand panorama of Latin American visual and performing arts. Excitement and education are assured!

The American Cancer Society’s cadre of 1.5 million dedicated volunteers are not only helping fight cancer but using their skills in unique ways to help those affected

by Coronavirus.

Nathan Levinton is a career counselor for the National Guard. His passion for music has led to a part time job as a DJ, to which he regularly volunteers to play music in support of American Cancer Society events such as Making Strides Against Breast Cancer and Relay For Life. These days, the Medford resident has a new way of giving back to the community through his hobby as a 3D printer.

When the COVID-19 crisis began and with supplies in demand, Nathan decided to utilize his resources to create face shields for medical professionals and first responders.

The response has been so great that he is finding it hard to keep up. He’s already donated 170 face shields and 150 mask extenders plus has another 6-dozen ready for use in Suffolk county.

He’s working alone and

in tandem with a Long Island wide network of creators who are making supplies for our first responders. “Nathan is a volunteer hero in my mind,� says Brittany Lawton, a community development manager at the Society. “When Gov. Cuomo asked for ingenuity, Nathan took the lead in helping others. His talent motivates walkers at Jones Beach each October during Making Strides Against Breast Cancer, and today his talent and his commitment to service is keeping others safe. “The American Cancer Society strives to create a culture of gratitude for all volunteers,� says Marie Cimaglia, Director of Community Development on Long Island and NYC. “This National Volunteer Week, we take an extra moment to express gratitude to each and every volunteer who has joined our mission, and the mission to help us through this pandemic,� she said.

Cimaglia continues by saying that during this difficult time, cancer won’t stop; and neither

will we. “Despite cancelled events, the cancer-fighting work of the Society continues,� she said. As the COVID-19 crisis grows larger every day, cancer patients – many of whom already have compromised immune systems - are more vulnerable than ever.

The public is asked to stay informed during this crisis at cancer.org/coronavirus.

Donations are being accepted at cancer.org/ rapidresponse.

Right now, the greatest need is information related to COVID-19 and cancer with 80 percent of all inquiries on the phone and online chat during March were related to this crisis, according to Patti Lestrange Mack, Communications Director, American Cancer Society.

The Charity of The Month for May is: Guardians of Rescue to get food for their pets. However, Paws of War will at times arrive at their homes with no warning, knock on their door and tell them that they have some items to drop off for them. “You always see that tear in their eye” says Robert. “That someone actually cares enough to come to their home and bring them something is very special.”

A lot of these veterans suffered for many years, all of which now have lifelong disabilities due to their service to our country. Paws of War feels that at the very least they can bring them pet food to give them a helping hand during these tough times.

Additionally, Paws of War has partnered with Cambridge Catering, who is providing hot cooked meals free of charge to our veterans. Hank, a Smithtown resident and veteran, was someone that Paws of War helped. When they arrived at his home, they noticed a his two very proud flags were destroyed.

They handed off the pet food and trays of hot food that Cambridge Catering has provided, but they didn’t stop there.

They then went to the hardware store and purchased everything to fix and replace his flags.

Long Island experiencing hardship due to COVID-19 were able to book a time online to pick up free hay.

In addition to the “Hay for Horses Mobile Food Pantry” they also featured a “10 Acts of Kindness” social media campaign for one day. The “10 Acts of Kindness” encouraged followers to spread kindness, spend time with family, get active and get creative by sharing different ideas.

Spirit’s Promise Equine Rescue was able to provide 30 plus equine owners/ equine organizations throughout Long Island a total of 670 bales of hay and 100 bags of feed at Tanger Outlet Center in Riverhead on Tuesday, May 5 during the National Giving Tuesday Now event held nationwide.

pantry, provide labor to farms, equine therapy for trauma, help drive the regional economy and so much more.

Another Hay For “Horses Mobile Food Pantry” drive will be planned as soon as Spirit’s Promise Equine Rescue can reach a funding goal of $10,000. The organization is applying for grants in hopes to support more of the equine industry on Long Island.

Special thanks to Tanger Outlets Center, Neptune Feed & Saddlery, National Giving Tuesday Now, the 15 volunteers including the Spirit’s Promise Equine Rescue Staff and the charitable donations from local individuals and businesses.

Guardians of Rescue is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. Their mission is to facilitate and foster programs and activities that further the unique benefits of interaction between people and animals.

We are all aware of the toll that this pandemic is having on people, yet the impacts are being felt beyond humans.

Animals are also being impacted in numerous ways by this situation.

Guardians of Rescue has been dealing with the Covid Crisis in many different ways, such as helping people feed their pets and taking on the responsibility to care for homeless animals. They have even stepped out of their realm of helping animals to assist seniors during these trying times.

They are overwhelmed by the amount of assistance needed and their phones are ringing non-stop. So many people have had their employment impacted by the virus, therefore donations have been down. This makes it difficult for them to continue feeding the animals, building doghouses, taking in new rescues and trying to cover all their expenses.

“The pandemic has created a host of problem for the animals,” says Robert Misseri, President of this organization.

“I hope that we can make it through this difficult time, so that we can continue to help the animals in need.”

Robert is also the President of Paws of War, another non-profit right here on Long Island. This organization trains and places shelter dogs to serve and provide independence to our U.S. military veterans that suffer from the emotional effects of war. In turn, each veteran can experience the therapeutic and unconditional love only a companion animal can bring.

Throughout this pandemic, they have been tending to the most at risk veterans.

They find that their older senior veterans typically are very prideful and refuse to ask for any handouts. Many live alone and will still go out and put themselves at risk
