knowing that I was going to participate in this competition,” said Gomez.

“However, when I got there, it turned out to be wonderful place and I really enjoyed it.”

An excited Gomez returned to school eager to share his experience.

“After the competition, I was somewhat sure that I had done well because the instructors were very complimentary of my work,” he said. “After learning that I had won the second-place prize, I was happy and proud of myself.

I am excited to take the painting class there this spring and summer.”

The win for Gomez was no surprise to his teacher.

“When I saw David’s first drawing this year,

I immediately knew he would do well in this competition,” said Figliozzi. “He is a tremendous talent and will do wonderful things with his art…and he’s only just begun.”

Gomez has always loved art.

“I like art because it allows me to create new ideas and imaginative things,” he said. “I am excited to continue to take art at East Islip, broadening my skills and learning new media.”

Gomez plans on continuing to broaden his practice by taking courses in AP art, electronic illustration and drawing in the coming years at East Islip.

David Gomez, an East Islip High School freshman studying drawing under teacher Daniel Figliozzi, attended a scholarship competition in March at Huntington Fine Arts, and won second place, proudly walking away with a $500 scholarship to attend advanced art classes at the prestigious Greenlawn art school.

HFA’s scholarship competition provides freshmen, sophomore and junior students on Long Island with the opportunity to draw the live figure.

Celebrating Science During a recent Board of Education meeting, the East Islip School District honored winners of the annual John F. Kennedy Elementary School (Jesse Hodge, Abigail Lemke, Drew McCarthy and Gianna Trager) and Ruth C. Kinney Elementary School (Lilyanna Graney, Frank

Muscarello and Michael Stadelman) science fairs.

The students proudly received certificates of achievement from Superintendent John V. Dolan and Board President Christopher Zachry.

Co-Valedictorians Brendan Mercado and Kenneth Ortega are Islip High School’s covaledictorians for the Class of 2017.

Mercado, an AP Scholar with Honor, is a member of the school’s National Honor Society, English Honor Society, World Language Honor Society and Tri-M Honor Society, and plays with the Islip Jazz Ensemble. He serves as secretary of the Science Olympiad team, earning a regional championship, and was named Islip’s Outstanding Senior Science Student. A New York State Scholar Athlete, he was named All-League in cross-country, and was team captain and a county medalist with Islip’s winter and spring varsity track and field squads.

Also an AP Scholar with Honor, Ortega is president

of Islip’s Peer Ambassadors, a Science Olympiad A team member and the class representative at the Superintendent’s Roundtable.

Heavily involved in student government, he served as class president as a sophomore and as treasurer during his final two years of high school.

Ortega is also a member of Islip’s varsity tennis and track and field teams.

Continuing their educational path together after graduation, both seniors will attend Cornell University this fall.

Mercado plans to study chemical engineering, while Ortega will major in human biology, health and society.

“This is truly an incredible milestone in my life,” said Ortega. “It’s a great honor to be co-

valedictorian and share this achievement with Brendan. We both have worked very hard and have been devoted to our goals.

Even though there are more challenges ahead, together we have closed this chapter successfully.”

“Rank was something I didn’t even know existed until recently, but that’s not what being covaledictorian is about,” added Mercado. “Kenny and I are well acquainted with success, failure and especially hard work. Those are all equally important, but the title itself is of a greater, less appreciated meaning: The love to learn.

Success, failure, and hard work are only tools for this higher purpose that I firmly believe we should all strive for. It is why we’re here to begin with.”

Bashing Trash

In honor of Earth Day, three performers from Bash the Trash visited East Islip’s Timber Point Elementary School on April 21st to share their love of the planet and music with students from kindergarten through

second grade.

For more than 25 years, Bash the Trash has melded science, sound and environmental awareness, using an array of recycled items to make music. The trio’s unusual instruments and catchy, ecology-

minded songs captured the attention of the audience, who were encouraged to go home and build their own sound-making devices out of household recyclables and junk.

The East Islip High School’s National Honor Society sponsored a clothing drive to raise funds for Kyle Engblom and the NBIA Disorders Association.

Members Rachel Florenz, Christine Llewellyn and Victoria Mayer organized the event as their Leadership Project.

Honor Society members canvassed the entire community with fliers, asking people to bring any items to the high school parking lot on April 28th.

Engblom, who has a rare disease known as FAHNFA2H, joined the NHS the entire morning and afternoon as more than 6,000 pounds of clothing and shoes donations came pouring in. Carecycle, a clothing recycling company, will donate 20 cents per pound of the total amount raised to the NBIA Association.

Founded in 1996, the nonprofit NBIADA is dedicated to families affected by NBIA, a rare

genetic, neurological movement disorder characterized by the progressive degeneration of the nervous system due to iron deposits in the brain. The NBIADA’s goals include raising funds to further research on the disease, providing emotional support to families, educating the public and monitoring and informing about ongoing NBIA research.

The three studentmusicians performed the baroque “Lully gavotte”, while Fischer played the Marin Marais composition’s piano part on her cello. Teacher and students then shared various techniques with

the audience, explaining how those techniques apply to their music.

All three students, described by Fischer as “wonderful, talented and dedicated,” will perform the piece at the NYSSYMA Solo Festival this month.

Twelve talented students from East Islip High School were awarded “Best in Show” at the 2017 Long Island Media Arts Show, recognizing their creativity and hard work in the fields of video as well as visual arts such as photography.

The competition was held on March 31 at Five Towns College’s Performing Arts Center in Dix Hills.

“The Media Arts Show really stepped up its production values this year,” said teacher James Connell. “There were several interactive experiences that the students who attended could engage with. We had students taking film

classes, as well as students joining live television and radio broadcasts throughout the day.”

Best in Show winners from Connell’s video production classes were writer/directors Steven Murello and Kaela Sanders.

Murello won for “Old Soul,” a film about a young man making a connection to his grandfather’s past; it starred Eddie Sallie and Brook Helmsorig.

Sanders earned her prize for “Handsprings,” a music video film inspired by current punk rock music; it starred Kathryn Bingham and Kyle Bishop.

“As always, our students represented their craft

well,” said Connell. “I am extremely proud of the hard work and extra effort my students put in each year, helping East Islip High School shine at this event,” said Connell.

Participating visual arts students came from Joy Taylor’s and Heather Toomey’s photography classes, Jen Geduldig’s electronic illustration classes, Liz Gibbons’ 2D design classes and Dan Figliozzi’s AP drawing classes.

Best in Show visual arts winners included Sanders as well as Alexa Benitez, Defne Duyku, Sarah Hillman, Destiny Kohlhepp, Stone Locke, Tristan Makinen, Kara Tejada, Zoe Stengel, Damian Vargas and Sam Zimmer.

“We had a record number of students attend as well as receive Best in Show awards this year,” said Toomey. “I am proud of all the students that participated, as it is not easy to take criticism from professionals, and they all took advice and criticism with poise and professionalism.”

Visit from a Poet Long Island author and poet Darren Sardelli recently visited Islip’s Sherwood Elementary School, reading several of his poems and speaking to

the students about how he became a writer.

Inspired by Shel Silverstein and Dr. Seuss, Sardelli’s humorous work includes the popular 2009

children’s poetry collection “Galaxy Pizza and Meteor Pie (And Other School Poems That Are Out of This World!).”

Tracking Density During a science lab at Islip Middle School, sixthgrade students examined how temperature affects the density of fluids, including liquids and gases.

In order to conduct the experiment, students used water tanks separated with

plastic dividers, pouring hot water that was dyed red on one side of the tank and cold water that was dyed blue on the other. When the dividers separating the hot and cold water were removed, students were surprised to see the cold blue water slide under the

warm red water.

“Through this lab, students were able to apply this information to their weather unit,” said teacher Jamie Carlino.

“This helped them understand how air masses of different temperatures react when they collide.”

Downtown Parking The Town of Islip has implemented a parking management program in the downtown Bay Shore area, that will organize and manage the increasing demand for shoppers, restaurant goers, and visitors, as the town continues its revitalization.

Bay Shore is growing, business is brisk, and the Town needs to manage relevant assets, as this revitalization continues.

The majority of the Town of Islip-owned public lots, over 62%, will remain free of charge for all users. Within the managed parking area, the Town has established fourhour parking zones, to accommodate local shops, restaurants, and other short-term demands.

The Town has also established longer term parking (12 hour), for both employees and those

who require longer stays within the downtown district. Employees of the local business community have been afforded the opportunity to acquire a Bay Shore Employee (BSE) permit that will be valid within the designated zone.

This permit can be found online, or downloaded from the Town of Islip website, at www.islipny. gov with instructions for use. Please also visit the Town of Islip website for FAQs, the downloadable employee permit, and maps designating the established zones.

“From the beginning, the Town has been working with the community to ensure that at the end of the day, this program maximizes the ease of parking in our downtowns, railroad stations and major popular areas, while eliminating the abuse of

many parking beyond the allotted times. It is a fluid program and adjustments can always be made going forward,” said Councilman John Cochrane, Jr. The Town has established convenient, seasonal, longterm parking which will be available in designated zones, for summertime activities, including popular destinations on Fire Island requiring overnight stays.

Pay station parking is user-friendly, and is clearly marked. Free parking areas will not feature numbered stalls. Please use pay stations for numbered stalls only, and follow the easy-to-use on-screen prompts for directions.

Beginning in summer 2017, a pay by smart phone app will also be in place for everyone’s convenience.

HOPE Program

Fifteen high school seniors from the Brentwood, Longwood, and Wyandanch school districts celebrated their “graduation” from Stony Brook Medicine’s Health Occupations Partnership for Excellence (HOPE) Program at a ceremony on May 9th, 2017, in the Stony Brook University Health Sciences Tower.

Out of the 15, seven of the graduates – a record number from the HOPE program – will be staying at Stony Brook University and entering as freshmen in the fall to continue striving towards their aspirations.

Others in the HOPE graduating class will attend New York University, Binghamton University, St. John’s University, St. Joseph’s College, and Suffolk County Community College.

Since its inception in 2005, HOPE has helped open new avenues for hundreds of promising high school students from ENVIRONMENTAL SPIRIT - Students, staff and parents of East Islip’s John F. underserved and racially Kennedy Elementary School community celebrated Earth Day on April 21 with a walk and ethnically diverse communities.

Brook faculty, the twoyear program fosters the academic development of 11th and 12th students and preps them for future careers in the health industry.

“The HOPE Program also teaches life lessons that will help the students as they follow their dreams into college and beyond,” said Yvonne Spreckels, Director of Community Relations and Director of the HOPE Program at Stony Brook University Hospital. “They have learned CPR and can save a life. They’ve also learned public speaking, interviewing, and critical thinking skills to help them successfully compete in a college setting and in the marketplace.”

During the 2016-2017 academic year, faculty instructed students with educational venues that included lectures, hands-on demonstrations and shadowing clinical professionals from multiple areas in medicine such as nursing, cardiology, anesthesiology, and respiratory care.

“It was an amazing opportunity to have been

given and I’m extremely grateful that I got to experience the medical field in such a direct and hands-on way,” said Brooke Alleyne from Longwood, who is one of the seven that will be attending Stony Brook University in the fall.

At this year’s ceremony, the students expressed how much they learned from HOPE, frequently citing the thrill of shadowing doctors, seeing medical technology in action, learning from nurses about patient care, and the amazing breadth of the healthcare field – one that they anticipate holds many opportunities for them after they complete college.

“HOPE was two full years of fun and learning,” said Kevin Fiallos from Brentwood, who will be attending Suffolk Community College.

“It influenced me to study what I wanted and motivated me to pursue another career as well. This program will definitely be one of my precious memories.”

Bridging the Transition Islip High School’s peer ambassadors, led by Assistant Principal Lisa Ward and school counselor Nicole Hall, recently visited Islip Middle School to talk to eighth-grade students about high school life.

Before the 20 peer ambassadors came to speak, the eighth-graders watched a video tour of the high school, narrated

by senior Ryan Lange, to prepare them for the experience. Lange later introduced some of the high school staff at various points in the school day. The eighthgraders used the prep time to brainstorm questions about the high school and ninth grade for them to ask the peer ambassadors, who also discussed high

school myths, fears and opportunities.

“The ambassadors were so mature, organized, and prepared,” said middle school counselor Kelly Doheny. “What wonderful role models! I think the middle school students were really impressed and learned so much.”

Suffolk County Legislature Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory attended the Suffolk County Veterans Appreciation Breakfast at the Larkfield in East Northport on May 1st.

The Suffolk County Veterans Appreciation Breakfast, sponsored by 18th District Legislator William Spencer, is an annual event that celebrates the contributions and sacrifices of the veterans in our local communities.

This year’s event honored 16th District Legislator Steve Stern, chairman of the Legislature’s Veterans Committee, who is serving his last year with the Legislature due to term limits. Over 200 veterans from all areas of Suffolk County were in attendance to celebrate the occasion.

“Having the chance to meet and pay tribute to many of the veterans in attendance today was truly an honor and a privilege,” said Presiding Officer

I recently had the opportunity to attend a journalism forum at The Paley Center for Media in Manhattan.

Titled “The Future of Local News: Trust, Truth & The Bottom Line,” this summit brought together some of the best and the brightest in the industry to discuss what many have summarily dismissed as a dying field.

I am happy to report that, after listening to several engaging panels touching on everything from politics to nonprofit upstarts to the pros and cons of social media in the information age, I came away with an even deeper sense of confidence that journalism is, in fact, here to stay. Sure, the fourth estate may have hit some bumps in the road of late; but, in essence, these

obstacles have only helped those truly reputable media outlets to gain a stronger foothold.

Too much of anything is a bad thing; this is a commonly held opinion. But, to be able to harness this influx of information and utilize it in such a way that is beneficial, well, that is a opportunity that should not be squandered. It may take time and research to discern what is truly valuable and accurate information, but why shouldn’t we devote that kind of effort to educating ourselves? It hardly seems a steep price to pay, in my estimation.

The hope is that, as the sources of “news” multiply and morph, future generations will increasingly become experts at determining what

is reliable. Not to throw the phrase back in my day around too lightly but… back when I was in college, media was pretty much defined as print or broadcast; newspapers, magazines, television, radio.

Social media was only just beginning to take off, and its potential as a legitimate source of news – breaking or otherwise – was as yet unanticipated.

Fast forward to the present day, when your average elementary school student is “plugged in” to his/her own cell phone throughout the day.

My, how times have changed.

Regardless of whether we support this development, the fact is - it’s happening. Best to jump on board and learn to harness the power of the media. It’s here to stay.

In recognition of her work, Dr. Greenwald was presented with the William H. Fulbright International Administrators Award in 2015, which afforded her the opportunity to travel to France to develop bilateral programs of educational exchange between France and the United States. Throughout

her nearly 20-year tenure at Farmingdale College, Dr. Greenwald has served as Dean of the School of Business, as Chair of the Computer Systems Department and as Professor of Computer Programming and Information Systems. In addition to her role in SBPLI’s FIRST Robotics Competition Development Council, Dr. Greenwald is also a member of

AIEA-Association of International Education Administrators.

Dr. Greenwald will join her fellow SBPLI supporters at the event, which begins with registration and golfers’ breakfast at 10:30 a.m., followed by a shotgun start at 12 noon and a BBQ Lunch on the course. The day will conclude with a dinner and reception, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Registration

costs $1,200 per foursome or $325 per golfer. For those who would like to attend only the cocktail reception and dinner, the cost is $125 per person.

There are also presently several attractive sponsorship opportunities available to assist SBPLI and provide businesses and individuals with valued recognition.

Heart & Stroke Ball a Success

Hundreds of attendees from the Long Island medical and corporate community came out to the Garden City Hotel in Garden City on Thursday, April 27th to attend the American Heart Association’s 54th annual Long Island Heart & Stroke Ball. The Long Island Heart Ball is an annual social event held to recognize outstanding accomplishments of individuals and companies in the area of cardiovascular science and leadership.

This year’s “Evening In Emerald City” themed event was chaired by Adam Silvers, Esq., Managing Partner-Ruskin Moscou, Faltischek and Vice-Chaired by Renee Pope, Executive Director, KPMG, LLP. The 54th Annual Heart Ball honored Philip D. Ragno, M.D., F.A.C.C., President/CoFounder-Island Cardiac

Specialists & Director of Cardiovascular Health & Wellness-WinthropUniversity Hospital with the 2017 Cardiovascular Science Award and David S. Bagatelle, Executive Vice President & President -New York Metro Market, Sterling National Bank received the 2017 Corporate Leadership Award.

Long Island residents, Mike DeStefeno and Stefanie Cohen shared their heart & stroke stories with the audience.

Come join us for a weekend of exploring ART in its myriad forms! Discover a piece of art to enrich your life and beautify your home or office. This art festival turns the Montauk Village Green into an outdoor gallery of exquisite original, handmade art by artisans from across America and overseas.

photography, glass and ceramics to mixed media, woodworking and more.

Long Island Music Hall of Fame (LIMHoF) is proud to announce that it is officially accepting applications for its 2017 LIMHoF Scholarship Program.

Each year, LIMHoF grants thousands of dollars in music scholarships to students who are graduating from high school in Long Island, Brooklyn and/or Queens, and who have shown an interest in pursuing a career in music. This year, four $500 scholarships will be awarded to qualifying students.

“Long Island Music Hall of Fame is honored to have the opportunity to once again assist in supporting the education of those students who are pursuing a future in music,” said

LIMHoF Education Chairman, Tom Needham.

“Our board members are dedicated mentors to young, upcoming artists and we are proud to offer scholarships to aid in furthering their music education.”

Eligibility Criteria: • Graduating high school senior from Long Island, Brooklyn or Queens.

• Minimum GPA of 2.5.

• Accepted full-time at an accredited college or university.

• Demonstrated interest in pursuing a career in music.

• Financial need.

• U. S. citizen or legal resident with I-55 permanent residency.

• Completion of online application form that includes essay, high school transcript and letter of recommendation.

Since 2010, $10,000 in scholarships have been awarded to selected members of the Gemini Youth Orchestra of Melville, Metropolitan Youth Orchestra of Manhasset, and Children’s Orchestra Society of Queens.

Students seeking funding are encouraged to download and complete the designated LIMHoF Student Scholarship Application by May 30th, 2017. Each application will be carefully reviewed by the LIMHoF Education Committee.
