Troop 205 Recognizes Its 105th Eagle Scout

Her Songs Broke Every Record, Her Story Broke Every Barrier

She was a girl from Boston with a voice from heaven, who shot through the stars from gospel choir to dance floor diva. What the world didn’t know was how Donna Summer risked it all to break through barriers, becoming the icon of an era and the inspiration for every music diva who followed. With a score featuring more than 20 of Summer’s classic hits including “Love to Love You Baby,” “Bad Girls” and “Hot Stuff,” this electric experience is a moving tribute to the voice of a generation. The Charity of the Month for May is LI Music & Entertainment Hall of Fame

www.limusichallo

The Long Island Music and Entertainment Hall of Fame (LIMEHOF) is a 501(c) (3) organization dedicated to the idea that Long Island’s musical heritage is an important resource to be celebrated and preserved for future generations. The organization, which encompasses New York State’s Nassau, Su olk, Queens, and Kings (Brooklyn) Counties, was created as a place of community that inspires and explores Long Island music in all its forms. LIMEHOF, located in Stony Brook, is heavily engrossed in our local communities and o ers Long Islanders many ways to get involved.

As like any non-profit, their volunteers play a large role in their e orts. Each and every person who gives their time as a volunteer is dedicated to help support their mission. If you have a passion for music and would like to volunteer, please visit www. limusichallo ame.org/volunteer and fill out an application form.

Additionally, donations of any size are accepted and appreciated. Your donation will help preserve our rich musical heritage and assist in providing music education programs for children and adults, including scholarships to deserving high school students. Specific donation amounts will allow you to get your name/ information in their Hall of Fame, engraved on either a Quarter Note ($250), Half Note ($500) or Whole Note ($1000).

The deadline for applications is Friday, May 12th. To apply and to read the eligibility requirements, please visit www.limusichallo ame. org/scholarshipsgrants.

LIMEHOF’s deep passion regarding the importance of music prompted them to develop a dynamic multimedia lecture series for schools (pre-school through college) and for libraries. This is designed to celebrate music made by Long Islanders for over a century and has been beloved by many local organizations. If you are interested in learning more, please contact them today at 631.689.5888 or info@limusichallo ame.org.

2023 SUFFOLK COUNTY COUNCIL CAMPOREE - On the weekend starting Friday night April 28, 2023, Scout Troop 43 and Troop 430 both chartered by AMVETS Post 76 of Bay Shore, joined other scouts and scouters from all over Suffolk County and a few from Nassau County to attend the 2023 SCC Camporee at South Haven Park. It was a very wet and windy weekend but the scouts were prepared and made the best of it enjoying the activities, camping, and being in outdoors. The scouts would like to thank AMVETS Post 76, their Scout Leaders, and their families for the continued support of the program in the area. Scout’s BSA programs offer youth the opportunities and access to experiences that are always available to others, opportunities to learn and grow in a safe and supervised setting. It’s time to put those old bicycles and sewing machines to good use. On Saturday, May 13 (rain or shine) from 11 am to 2 pm, Returned Peace Corps Volunteers of Long Island will hold its annual used bicycle and sewing machine collection in the parking lot of South Huntington Public Library (145 Pidgeon Hill Road, Huntington Station). The items collected will then be reconditioned by

the international non-profit Pedals for Progress (P4P) and sent to Belize.

The mission of P4P is to foster sustainable economic development by recycling bicycles and sewing machines from the US and shipping them to motivated people in the developing world. For many in the US, Belize is seen as an ideal vacation destination but beyond the beaches lies tremendous poverty. Approximately 50%

of Belize’s population is children and youth below the age of nineteen. A large percentage of this population is concentrated in the urban ghettos of the south-side of Belize City, specifically in the Port Loyola area. Many of these children live in poverty and are exposed to violence, crime, and civil unrest.

Information about the P4P Belize program can be found at: https://www.p4p.org/ category/belize

This is the 19th bike/ sewing machine collection organized by Returned Peace Corps Volunteers of Long Island. To date, RPCVLI has collected 1707 bicycles and 282 sewing machines that have been distributed to Rwanda, Tanzania, Togo, Guatemala, Albania and Kosovo. amongst others.

“Members of Returned Peace Corps volunteers of Long Island see this project

as a way of continuing our commitment to support programs in developing countries,” says Kathy Williams-Ging of Huntington Station, who was a Peace Corps Volunteer in Peru and is co-coordinator of the May 13th collection..

Anyone with an adult or child’s bicycle in repairable condition or a working portable sewing machine is urged to donate the item.

Since it costs $40 to collect, process, ship, rebuild and distribute each bicycle, a donation toward shipping costs is necessary (suggested minimum $20 per item). All cash and material donations are fully deductible and a receipt will be provided on site. The program does not accept “bikes for parts,” disassembled bikes or tricycles.

Founders Of PinkTie Recognized

FOUNDERS OF PINKTIE RECOGNIZED - Founders of of PinkTie, a communityled charity that tackles tough social and economic issues while finding opportunities for the underserved communities in New York State, Mike and Rich Cave, were recognized by Legislator Steven J. Flotteron at the I AM CI Gala in the Flowerfield Catering Hall. The mission of the I AM CI Foundation is to promote and enhance the quality of children who live in the Central Islip School District. PinkTie was started by Mike and Rich Cave after losing an Aunt to breast cancer. They took the opportunity to turn a tragedy into doing for others less fortunate. Since its inception in 2012, the organization has grown to support causes in New York related to education, food security and health. The organization has raised more than $1M and has partnered with local pantries with 150 plus food drop-off sites assisting families in need as a result of the COVID pandemic. Stamp Out Hunger® Food Drive Returns Saturday, May

Island Harvest Food Bank, the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC), and the United States Postal Service (USPS) are pleased to announce the return of the annual Stamp Out Hunger®, the nation’s most extensive one-day food collection campaign. This year’s Stamp Out Hunger food drive is on Saturday. May 13, 2023, and all food collected in Nassau and Suffolk counties will benefit Island Harvest in providing much-needed supplemental food support to more than 300,000 Long Islanders who face hunger and food insecurity, including nearly one-third who are children.

“Participating in Stamp Out Hunger is easy,” says Randi Shubin Dresner, president and CEO of Island Harvest.

“Generous Long Islanders are encouraged to leave nonperishable food items in a bag next to their mailbox before the regularly scheduled mail delivery on Saturday, May 13, 2023. Then, your USPS letter carrier will do the rest to help make sure that no one on Long Island goes hungry.”

Non-perishable food items to be donated include canned goods, cereal, pasta, rice, boxed juices and shelfstable milk (please, no food or juices in glass containers). In addition, personal care

items such as toothpaste, soap, shampoo, deodorant, and disposable diapers are accepted. All goods donated on Long Island will help replenish Island Harvest’s network of food pantries, soup kitchens and other emergency feeding programs in communities throughout Long Island.

“Every donation, no matter how small, helps our neighbors who are in the unenviable position of choosing between paying for such things as housing, transportation, and medicine or putting food on the table,” said Ms. Shubin Dresner. “I am confident that the past generosity displayed by our Long Island neighbors will help make this year’s Stamp Out Hunger food drive one of the most successful.”

Due to the pandemic, the Stamp Out Hunger food collection was temporarily discontinued in 2020.

Since its inception in 1993, Stamp Out Hunger has collected more than 1.75 billion pounds of food in all 50 states plus the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Guam and the U.S. Virgin Islands to help address the issue of hunger in America. On Long Island, Stamp Out Hunger brought in over 519,000 pounds of food in 2019 before the event was temporarily

suspended from 2020 through 2022 due to the pandemic.

“The National Association of Letter Carriers and the men and women we represent on Long Island are pleased to once again partner with Island Harvest in this year’s Stamp Out Hunger food collection,” said Tom Siesto, 1st Vice President, NALC Branch 6000. “Our carriers often see firsthand the pervasive issue of hunger as part of their daily rounds, and they are eager to help give back to the community and assist in helping Island Harvest Food Bank tackle this important issue.”

This year’s major

sponsoring partners with

Island Harvest on the NALC Stamp Out Hunger collection campaign include National Grid, JP Morgan Chase & Co., Amazon, Allstate, Bethpage Federal Credit Union, Catholic Health, Nonna’s Garden, Long Island Federation of Labor, MCN Distributors, Dime Community Bank and New York Community Bank.
