Students’ Civics Project Collects Donations For Homeless Shelter

At the beginning of the school year, Islip High School civics teacher Ted Blanchard introduced seniors Estefany Gonzalez and Anali Turcios Alvizures to a civic readiness project with a goal of gathering donations for the homeless. The two students accepted the challenge enthusiastically and started brainstorming ideas to make the project a success, meeting with building administration to pitch their ideas.

The seniors identified an organization to work with, the Long Island Coalition for the Homeless in Amityville. They communicated with community engagement specialist Bailey Riekkinen and learned about the significant need for clothing, shoes and

toiletries. They developed a plan, created flyers and posters that were shared with the community, and began a collection following winter break. The response was overwhelming, with the community rallying behind the students and filling donation boxes and bags in the high school’s main office with clothing, blankets and toiletries.

On March 15, Gonzalez and Turcios Alvizures provided LICH with the hundreds of donated items. Meeting with Riekkinen, they learned about the varying needs of the homeless and those in emergency shelters, as well as the procedure for processing donations and distributing to those in need through the Coalition’s boutique.

“For Estefany and Anali,

this project was not just about collecting donations, it was also about learning to be engaged in their community and giving back to those in need,” Assistant Principal Meghan Stern said. “Throughout the project, Estefany and Anali emphasized the importance of empathy, compassion and understanding. They developed a deeper appreciation for the challenges that homeless individuals face and gained a better understanding of how they can make a positive impact in their community. The project taught them the value of civic engagement, and they left with a sense of pride and fulfillment, knowing that they made a difference in the lives of others.”

The arrival of a special delivery was celebrated at the April Town Board meeting. About 2 months ago, on Saturday February 25th, Amy and Ian Steinberg were preparing for bed, as expecting and soon-to-be parents. When they found themselves on the Long Island Expressway the next morning … at 2:00 AM, they quickly learned the true meaning of the word “soon.”

So eager was their little girl to meet her proud parents, she decided that their arrival at Katz

Casteneda and Emily Cassar responded and moved Amy into the ambulance where she gave birth seconds after, to a healthy baby girl: Cora Baylie Steinberg.

“Our congratulations to

the happy parents! Such a beautiful baby girl she is, with such a beautiful name,” said Supervisor Carpenter. “And, I should note, baby Cora’s middle name “Baylie,” is spelled “B-A-Y” (for Bay Shore

exit), “L-I-E” (for Long Island Expressway). Her first name Cora, represents the three EMT’s whose names begin with the letter C,” she added.

Amy and Cora joined the celebration via FaceTime.

New York Senator Monica R. Martinez’s Bill Passes, Providing Timely Death Benefits For Volunteer Firefighters And Ambulance Workers

Senator Monica R. Martinez’s bill S.4711 has passed the Senate, ensuring timely payment of death benefits for volunteer firefighters and ambulance workers who die in the line of duty. The bill amends Section 7 of the Volunteer Firefighters’ Benefit Law and the Volunteer

Ambulance Workers’ Benefit Law, mandating payment of benefits within ninety days upon the filing of application.

“Delaying payment of death benefits causes significant financial and emotional distress to the beneficiaries of our volunteer firefighters and

ambulance workers,” said Senator Martinez. “It’s unacceptable for families to wait over six months to receive the compensation they are entitled to. This legislation will provide much-needed relief to those who have lost loved ones in service to their communities.”

The bill encourages communication and coordination between volunteer fire and ambulance service organizations, workers’ compensation boards, volunteer firefighters and ambulance workers and their families to work together and determine

whether a death or injury occurred in the line of duty. This process can be a long and daunting one and this legislation will remove the burden of excessive delays in payment.

“I’m proud to have sponsored this bill and grateful for the support of my colleagues in the

Legislature,” said Senator Martinez. “Volunteer firefighters and ambulance workers put their lives on the line every day to protect our communities. It’s our duty to ensure their families are taken care of in the event of a tragedy.”

Dawn McGrath Named Assistant Vice President Of Operations At Educational Bus Transportation

Rebuilding Together

Long Island (RTLI) is a nonprofit organization, headquartered in Farmingdale, serving Nassau County and most of Su olk County. As an a liate of the national organization, Rebuilding Together, their mission is repairing homes, revitalizing communities and rebuilding lives.

To accomplish their vision of safe and healthy homes for everyone, they provide free essential home safety repairs and modifications for economicallydisadvantaged homeowners, whether they are older adults, veterans, families or persons with a disability or limited mobility.

The beneficiaries of RTLI’s work, lowincome homeowners struggling to get by, are so appreciative of the repairs and modifications that this organization does to keep them safe and improve their quality of life. “I was desperate,” said a widow of a Navy veteran who welcomed RTLI’s helping hand. “Now I have so much less stress and a more comfortable and safer house.”

Another recent client said, “Thank you for treating my home like it was yours. You all showed professionalism, caring and impeccable workmanship. You made my home more livable and safer. You are doing a beautiful thing and should be very proud.” These words lift the spirits of the hardworking RTLI volunteers.

Their small o ce in Farmingdale has only one employee, so their volunteers are really a significant part of what they do. “Our volunteers are the heart and soul of our organization,” said Stella Hendrickson, President of RTLI. “Almost all are retired. They give their time, their talents, their expertise and their hearts

to those who need a helping hand.”

The volunteer teams work tirelessly to help our neighbors, traveling throughout Long Island, using their own cars and tools. They come from all walks of life and professions, from teachers to principals, business owners, social workers, administrative assistants, accountants and truck drivers. The list goes on and on, but they all have one thing in common; their commitment to do the right thing, give back, lend a hand and be there for someone in need.

Here are ways you can get involved:

•If you know someone who may benefit from their services, have them call the RTLI o ce at 631.777.7894, Monday – Friday, to see if they qualify for the free program.

•Join the RTLI team! Volunteers can sign up at rebuildingtogetherli.org/ volunteer-today. Currently they are looking for individuals who are fluent in Spanish and for an o ce person, particularly if they are familiar with Salesforce. Additionally, if you are handy with tools, the Nassau and Su olk crew teams are always looking for more help.

•Donate at rebuildingtogetherli. org. RTLI relies on the donations of our neighbors, some grants and corporate sponsorships, as they do not receive any government funding.

•RTLI encourages local business to get involved and sponsor a project. The organization can find the right project for your business to sponsor and you can then promote your generosity on social media to show your commitment to improving the health and safety of someone in need locally.

When we work together, we can bring about transformational change quickly in our communities.

If your non-profit would like to be featured in this column, please email noellelambert@longislandmediagroup.com for consideration.

Dawn McGrath, a resident of Lindenhurst, NY, has been promoted to Assistant Vice President of Operations at Educational Bus Transportation, which provides student transportation services to a number of school districts in Nassau and Suffolk Counties. The announcement was made by Educational Bus Transportation CEO John Corr.

“For 35 years, Dawn has been part of the Educational Bus family, beginning as a school bus driver before moving on to dispatcher and eventually Operations Manager,” observed Corr. “Every step of the way, she has demonstrated a steadfast commitment to excellence and safety. She is a consummate professional who possesses the skills and ability that are essential to excellence in student transportation. Everyone at Educational Bus Transportation joins me in congratulating Dawn as she begins her next chapter

as Assistant Vice President of Operations.”

According to Corr, McGrath will report directly to Patti Royce-Moser, Vice President of Operations, helping to provide support, leadership, and direction to Educational Bus Transportation’s operating locations throughout Long Island. She will also help control the daily operation of all transportation contracts, in compliance with the policies of the contracting agencies and in conformance

with company policies and procedures.

Last year, McGrath received The Golden Merit Award from the National School Transportation Association (NSTA) at its annual meeting and convention. Among the highest honors in the school transportation industry, The Golden Merit Award recognizes school transportation professionals for their outstanding achievements in service and safety.

With more than 1,400 vehicles and over 2000 employees, The Trans Group is actively involved in the school bus industry on the state and federal level. Islip Teens Earn Prestigious Girl Scout Silver Award

The Girl Scouts of Suffolk County recently celebrated local Girl Scouts who have earned the prestigious Girl Scout Silver Award during the annual Silver Award Ceremony and Breakfast, which included a keynote address by the Commissioner of the Suffolk County Department of Labor Licensing and Consumer Affairs, Rosalie Drago. The Silver Award program recognizes the power and dedication shared by each recipient as they join an elite group of young women who earn the highest Girl Scout honor a Cadette Scout can achieve. Members of the West Islip Service Unit 617, East Islip Service Unit 640 and Bayshore/ Brightwaters Service Unit 642; Leah Giana, Hayden Wolin, Keira Johnson, Nicole Grieco, Erin Burns, Makenna Miller, Juliette Keingstein, Mikalia Budnik, Leah Stowers, Simone George, Arianna Sanchez, Kylie Lewis, Ava Morrisey, Elizabeth Camaratta, Madelyn Holliday, Yaslinne Corona, Emilia Cicale, Sage Lyons, Angelina Codispoti,

Emma Demarco, Jessica Stowers, Leah Anthony, Sophia Mckierno, Abigail Ife, Lilith Gundersen, Isabella Petraglia, and Tyla Stephenson were among those acknowledged for this great accomplishment.

“The Silver Award is the highest distinction that Girl Scouts in this age range can earn,” said GSSC President & CEO Tammy Severino.

“It takes a great deal of responsibility, dedication, and confidence for these Girls to complete these important projects as they create a notable positive impact in their community. I applaud these girls’ commitment to making a difference and joining a highly distinguished group of accomplished young women.”

To achieve a Silver Award, Girl Scouts each tackled a project that held a deep significance to them and would greatly benefit the world around them. To be eligible for a Silver Award, each recipient must complete their Cadette Journey before beginning their Silver Award project. To meet the Girl Scout Silver

Award requirements, each candidate must complete at least 50 hours toward their project.

Girls in grades 6-8 begin their Silver Award journey by identifying a civic or social issue they care about. Next, a Girl Scout builds a team to support her project with the mission to create a positive impact in her community by addressing an issue she feels passionate about. Through the process, Silver Award Girl Scouts build invaluable problemsolving, organizational, and leadership skills while educating and inspiring others.

Troop 2261 members Leah Giana, Hayden Wolin, and Keira Johnson group created parent comfort kits for families of children who are patients at Good Samaritan Hospital. The kits included basic toiletries that the hospital does not have to supply to patients.

Nicole Grieco, Erin Burns and Makenna Miller created kits to help relieve the stress of children about to have surgery or other medical treatment in our local

hospital. Each of the kits contained sensory toys to help calm children.

Juliette Keingstein and Mikalia Budnik filled kits for their local hospital to help staff with activities for developmentally

delayed adult patients. The activities are to assist the hospital staff in finding new ways to calm the nerves and occupy time of these patients.

Leah Stowers, Simone George, Arianna

Sanchez and Kylie Lewis researched and organized a camping cookbook filled with every meal that could be cooked while camping.

Islip Teens Earn Prestigious Girl Scout Silver Award

Continued From 16

Ava Morrisey, Elizabeth Camaratta, Madelyn Holliday and Yaslinne

Corona researched traditional Girl Scout ceremonies and customs at camp and designed a book for other Girl Scout troops to use and enjoy on their trip to camp.

Emilia Cicale, Sage Lyons and Angelina Codispoti collected and donated storage bins and shoes for the Children’s Advocacy Center.

Emma Demarco, Jessica Stowers, Leah Anthony and Sophia Mckierno created a camp book filled with activities that are best fit for troop camping.

After researching and testing the activities they designed and created the book themselves.

Abigail Ife, Lilith Gundersen, Isabella Petraglia and Tyla Stephenson built a bench for Walker Beach so that neighbors and veterans would have a place to sit by the flagpole to enjoy as they pay respects for those who have served.
