The Long Island alternative transportation advocacy organization, Car-less Long Island, is holding its second annual Long Island “Bike-to-Work Parade” on Saturday, April 29th. Gathering for the parade begins as 9 a.m. at Hofstra University’s North campus.

The parade will follow a 6.5-mile loop beginning and ending at Hofstra University. There will be a route for pedestrians, disabled participants, cyclists with younger children and cyclists who simply would prefer a shorter ride. Participants are encouraged to dress up and adorn their bicycles.

There will be a festival with prizes for the best costumes and bikes at the end of the parade. The festival leads into Hofstra University’s Dutch festival with food and flower vendors, music and rides for small children.

“There are many

reasons why Long Islanders should support alternative forms of transportation, such as biking,” says Car-less Long Island founder and chairwoman, Sylvia Silberger.

“Clearly it is much more environmentally friendly and bicycle commuters are able to incorporate a

healthier active life-style into their daily routine. But also, it reduces vehicular congestion, benefitting all motorists, and many studies have shown that walk- and bike-ability helps local businesses thrive. There are also many Long Islanders who need alternative

forms of transportation because they are unable to drive or own their own cars and we all benefit if everyone as access to the transportation necessary to survive in this world.”

“Through the program’s respite scholarship and volunteer companions, caregivers are able to engage in activities they had previously enjoyed, but had to put on hold due to their caregiving responsibilities.

The scholarship has also helped decrease the financial burden placed on families caring for a loved one with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias,” stated Lorraine Breuer, Parker’s Senior Vice President of Research and Grants.

In addition to these respite services, caregivers can also take advantage of education and training programs offered by Willing Hearts, Helpful Hands, as well as the various support groups held across Long Island.

Rosenblut, President and CEO of Parker Jewish Institute. “The support services provided by Willing Hearts, Helpful Hands are vital to reducing caregiver stress and burnout, and helping caregivers allow their loved ones to live at home for as long as possible,” Rosenblut added.

To help ease the stress associated with being a caregiver, Willing Hearts, Helpful Hands provides respite or temporary relief so caregivers can take a break.

The program offers a scholarship that covers in-home care, adult day services or overnight stays in an assisted living facility or nursing home.

Caregivers can receive up to 120 hours or a maximum of $1,800 per calendar year.

In addition, caregivers also have access to volunteer companions.

Trained volunteers are matched with family caregivers and make weekly visits. They provide a friendly visit;

with Jamie Lynn Ryan So much of life is spent planning, filling in those square boxes on the calendar with appointments and meetings and lunch dates and movie outings.

And yet, very little of that time is spent doing things we truly enjoy. Even certain social engagements seem to take on a sense of obligation, of fitting in “fun” simply so that we can check off “reconnecting with old friends” from the neverending to do list.

To do, or not to do, that is the question. Sure, there are plenty of things we “have” to do, even if we sometimes lose sight of why. We have been trained, conditioned, to meet the expectations of a society that sees any type of downtime as a bad thing.

Car-less Long Island (CLLI) was founded in the summer of 2015 as a project of the Ethical Humanist Society of Long Island. “It seems I have often found myself in conversations with other Long Islanders who would like to be able to get around without a car, but are frustrated by the danger and inconvenience inherent alternative modes of transportation,” says Silberger. She founded CLLI to counter the “nihilistic feeling that this is just how Long Island is – we are a car-culture and that will never change.”

Silberger is optimistic that the Bike-to-Work Fashion Parade will allow Long Islanders who would like Long Island to be a more bike-friendly community realize that they are not alone.

East Islip Eagle

Alexander Joseph Viruet, East Islip, New York, successfully completed his Eagle Board of Review on February 15th, officially making him the 71st Eagle Scout of Troop 205 of Great River, East Islip, and Islip Terrace. Alex’s Eagle Court of Honor will be held on Tuesday, June 6th, starting at 7:30 p.m. with dinner being served at 6:00 p.m. at Timber Point Elementary School, 200 Timber Point Road, East Islip.

Alex is a member of Troop 205, sponsored by the Great River Fire Department, under the direction of Scoutmaster Mark Businski. On his “Road to Eagle,” Alex has served Troop 205 as Patrol Leader and Troop Guides – where he has assisted his younger Scouts in their Rank Advancements.

Alex has had many unique Scouting experiences; including being a participant Scout at the 2013 National Boy Scout Jamboree at the

Bechtel Summit Boy Scout High Adventure Base in West Virginia. He was also a summer camper for four summer seasons at the Suffolk County Council, BSA Baiting Hollow Scout Camp, and another week at the Baiting Hollow Provisional Camp, two summer seasons at Camp Wakpominee in the Adirondack Mountains in Ft. Ann, NY and participated in many weekend campout with Troop 205 on and off Long Island.

This has included weekend camping trips to hiking the Gettysburg Historic Trails in Gettysburg, PA; Hudson River Valley White Water rafting, PA; U.S. Naval Academy Campout in Annapolis, MD; Frost Valley, PA Campout; Indian Island County Park and West Hills County Park Campouts on Long Island; Harriman State Park Campout, NY; Battleship Cove Campout, MA; and the

Hershey Park Campout, PA. Alex was also elected by his fellow Scouts in Troop 205 to be a member of the Order of the Arrow – the Boy Scout’s honorary camping organization.

He also earned his BSA Tot’in Chip, Firem’m Chit, and World Conservation Awards.

To become an Eagle Scout, the Scout must earn 21 merit badges, of which 12 are specifically Eagle required, progress through six rank advancements – from Tenderfoot, Second Class, First Class, Star, Life, then Eagle, and also plan, develop, and implement a major service project for the community.

Alex has actually earned 33 merit badges. The Service Project that Alex developed, planned, and implemented with the assistance of his fellow Troop members, friends and family members, was building two park benches out of all natural non-treated wood and refurbishing one preexisting bench around the lake at the South Shore Nature Center in East Islip.

As Alex reflects on his Scouting experience, he recently said, “Scouting has made me the person I am today. At a young age, the Boy Scouts instilled the proper morals and work ethic needed to become independent and in a way, self-reliant. Scouting has taught me everyday skills that I will use for the rest of my life.”

Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter, teamed up with Suffolk County Police Commissioner Tim Sini, to conduct a Senior Safety presentation at the Ceasar Trunzo Senior Center in Brentwood recently. The event shed light on the different types of scams senior citizens can fall prey to, including telephone scams, computer scams, and door-to-door solicitations.

The Supervisor and Police Commissioner reminded seniors that the IRS does not initiate telephone calls to taxpayers asking for money, and advised residents never to share their personal identity information, credit card numbers or banking information with

anyone.

“The Town of Islip offers residents, including our treasured senior population, many informative programs and resources. Today’s Senior Safety presentation in conjunction with the Suffolk County Police Department and Commissioner Tim Sini, provided invaluable information to help senior citizens protect themselves from the devious acts of scammers,” said Islip Supervisor Angie Carpenter. “We are grateful to Commissioner Sini for taking the time to share these important tips with our residents.”

“I want to thank Supervisor Carpenter for organizing today’s event,

where we were able to provide useful information to our seniors about protecting themselves from a range of financial scams.

Once again, the Supervisor is taking proactive steps to protect our seniors. I, for one, certainly enjoyed meeting all of the residents today, and presenting on such an important topic,” said Suffolk County Police Commissioner Tim Sini.

Ghost-Out Day At East Islip High School’s 14th annual Ghost-Out Day on March 23rd, the Students Against Destructive Decisions Club held a powerful campaign to bring awareness to the tragic cost of substance abuse.

Every 20 minutes during the day, a gong sounded over the loudspeakers, and a student dressed as the Grim Reaper enters a classroom. As a real-life scenario is read to the

class, depicting a person being killed due to drugs or alcohol, the Reaper walks around the room and chooses someone to “strike.” During the course of the day, the Reaper strikes 16 times, and the struck students wear black T-shirts denoting their status, remaining silent for the rest of the day as a reminder of the young lives lost every 16 minutes due to substance abuse.

somber day and encourages discussions about avoiding drugs and alcohol and not becoming part of this deadly statistic,” said teacher and SADD adviser Bridget Lopiccolo, who organizes the event each year. “We need to make this stop, and we need to work together as a community and school to educate our students to not fall into this sad path.”

State of the County Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone today announced that he will deliver this year’s State of the County Address at Suffolk County Community College’s Michael J. Grant Campus in Brentwood. The Address will be held on Wednesday, May 17th, at 7 p.m.

“This year, we’re moving

the State of the County to a larger venue to accommodate additional guests,” said County Executive Bellone. “I look forward to sharing my ideas with our elected officials and community leaders on how we can continue moving Suffolk forward.”

The 2017 address will be

held at the Van Nostrand Theatre, which is located in the college’s Sagtikos Building. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m. and guests will not be admitted into the venue past 6:45 p.m.

Gang Forum Suffolk County Sheriff Vincent DeMarco hosted a seminar for the Suffolk County Cooperative Library System today to help educate library staff about gangs in Suffolk County. Sheriff DeMarco was joined by officers from the Sheriff’s Gang Intelligence Unit as well as

Sheriff DeMarco gave the opening remarks at the forum, which featured topics such as gang trends in Suffolk County and ways that gangs recruit

youth. The Sheriff spoke about the tragic events of the past few months in which young people have been murdered by gang members in Suffolk County. He also spoke about the importance of community collaboration to enhance public safety in communities prone to

Living Legacy Tree A magnificent handcrafted Living Legacy Tree now adorns the LICADD Executive Offices in Westbury. The tree was a brainchild of LICADD staff to honor and memorialize those lost and pay tribute to those dedicated to the field of substance abuse and recovery. Championed

by LICADD Board Member, Father Philip Eichner of Kellenberg Memorial High School (KMHS), the tree was designed and created by artisan, Frederick H. Weber of Weber Woods with assistance from the KMHS carpentry department.

The striking Living Legacy Tree was crafted using over fifteen varieties of wood from the United States, Africa and South America, including Cherry, White Oak, Padouk and Purpleheart. The result is a mosaic-like pattern and evokes the feeling of many coming together as one - those who have lost their battle and those who continue the work of

recovery and support. The visual message is powerful.

The Living Legacy Tree will feature the tribute: “In special recognition of those who have been touched by addiction.” Donors’ names or the name of a loved one, friend or relative, will be engraved and placed on the Tree. LICADD is committed to recognizing every contributor of $1,000 or more on the tree. The generosity of donors to the Legacy Tree will go toward funding both Chemical Dependency Interventions for families in the throes of addiction and the Student Assistance Program (SAP) that provides needed prevention education for students in grades K-12.

100% of the proceeds will go directly to LICADD programming to help those challenged with the ravages of addiction and their families. Donors who have made donations of less than $1,000 are invited to consider increasing their gift to participate in

this special program.

Over sixty years ago, LICADD founder, R. Brinkley Smithers, surrounded himself with advocates in the medical and spiritual community as well as generous supporters to begin a national movement towards recovery. Today, LICADD is helping more families than ever before.

All too often people want to pretend this isn’t happening in their neighborhoods, but gangs are everywhere. We need

to educate people who are in community about what to look for, and inform them about what to do if they see gang members recruiting outside their premises.”

Founder’s Day Celebration

A Champagne Brunch was held by The Long Island Federation of Women’s Clubs, Inc. (LIFWC), under the leadership of its president, Frances Rotondo, at The Woodlands of Woodbury to pay tribute to the founders of the many women’s clubs that make up this Federation. This was the second such event in two years and was attended by over 100 members.

President Rotondo read part of a beautiful poem entitled, Phenomenal Women, by Maya Angelou and then introduced the LIFWC Board and Department Heads. Five speakers from various

clubs inspired guests with many interesting and fascinating stories about their club founders.

Some of the original club founders were women who rolled bandages during WWI, who marched for the Women’s Suffragette Movement in the early 1900’s, who organized 80% of the nation’s libraries and who served as hostesses for visiting international guests at the 1939 World’s Fair.

This year’s guest speaker was Donna Scherer, former President of the General Federation of Women’s Clubs – NY 2008-10.

In addition to holding many chairmanships, Ms.

Scherer was also Mayor of the Village of Bellerose.
