A Walk to Remember On Saturday, May 7th, 2016 Angela’s House will be hosting their 1st Annual Walk aptly titled: Angel of Hope: A Walk to Remember. This event will take place at Eisenhower Park, where the statue has stood since 2008. During the past eight years we have had a candle light vigil on the first Saturday of December that gives hope to over 300 that attend

this spiritual gathering.

Due to popular demand we have created this event as the second gathering of the year.

The Angel was brought to Long Island by Bob Policastro the founder of Angela’s House. It comes from a best-selling book and television movie called The Christmas Box

Led by Executive Director, Bob Policastro, we will also be joined by our guest speaker is David Roberts, who lost his daughter in 2003 from Cancer. David speaks nationally at conferences, writes blogs reflecting his life experiences for the Huffington Post, Open to Hope and various other online periodicals and websites. In addition, Interfaith Minister, Rev. Patty Furino will lead a quiet reflection, and a simple prayer to inspire peace.

To conclude the ceremony we have invited the voices of choirs and chorus’s from around Long Island. Members of the New Apostolic Church and the Willow Interfaith Women’s Choir will lead the attendees and participants in singing “Clouds,” a beautifully touching song written by Zach Sobiech, who touched so many lives with this song, and continue to do so despite losing his battle to cancer a few years ago. Upon its completion, the attendees will then follow a path around Salisbury Lake, hopefully inspired to look up at the clouds, knowing their child has been remembered and cherished. The walk, which is less than a mile long, will conclude at the statue. We hope to invoke the feeling of faith and hope and make this event an inspiring day for all who participate. We

truly believe this type of event will help families dealing with the loss of a child during Mother’s Day weekend.

The statue evokes a profound and miraculous connection between mother and child and helps convey valuable lessons about the true meaning of life to others. As spring begins, Mother’s Day is celebrated by most families, but sadly there are many who walk with the pain of losing a child. They always have a space in their heart where that love is still carried. Our hope is to allow the Angel of Hope to be a reminder that the love shared with their child was a blessing and can always be cherished and remembered. All who knew the child, but especially their parents, need to feel hope that they will survive and move on, and that these children will never be forgotten.

LICADD’s BUDDY Mentoring Program provides children with a positive adult-child relationship on a stable and predictable basis. The BUDDY Program’s goals are to enhance the protective factors in children of parents incarcerated by helping them to create predictable and attached relationships with one or more adults; promote and facilitate participation by underserved youth in educational and cultural activities that enhance their academic, cultural and social competency skills, build self-esteem and develop self-confidence.

These activities provide opportunities for our children to learn respect for diverse cultures, avoid unsafe and destructive behaviors including gang participation, bullying and experimentation with drugs and alcohol and to ensure that young people’s risk factors are identified and addressed promptly through direct service provision and/or referrals to ancillary services.

This program further facilitates the delivery of a wide range of support services to at-risk children of incarcerated parents helping to break the multi-generational cycle incarceration frequently fueled by addiction.

Random Rambles By: Jamie Lynn Ryan It’s been a rough year. Less than four months in and, well, I know many people who are already looking for a do-over.

Sure, every period of time has its ups and downs, highs and lows. But honestly, since the moment the ball dropped in Times Square this past New Year’s Eve, it seems that everything began falling right along with it.

At least it’s Spring. There is something uplifting about sunshine-filled afternoons and flower blossoms that does bring a smile to the face, however fleeting it may be. And of course, those sunworshippers among us have to be looking forward to

summer and beach outings and barbeques.

But until then… It’s April.

April 15th, to be exact, as I write these words. Tax Day (although, technically speaking, we were graced with a few extra days tacked on to the filing deadline this year).

The Easter Bunny has come and gone. Baseball diamonds are abuzz with activity. Pretty soon, school will be out of session and the parks and pools will be flooded with families having fun.

And so it goes. From dawn until dusk, one season into the next, day after day, week after week, month after month; until, before you know it, a decade has passed in the blink of an eye. In just a couple of

weeks, I will be celebrating my 11th year as editor and columnist at this very paper.

How much has changed in that span of time…

The best thing we can do – the only thing, really – is to embrace each day, with all its nuances, and appreciate whatever it may bring into our respective lives. The list of things beyond our control is endless; the key to happiness lies in how we react to them, what we learn from them, and how we use them to better ourselves as individuals.

I’m no philosopher, but that much I’ve pick up in my 33 years roaming this planet.

Here’s wishing everyone a brighter tomorrow… and the day after… and the day after…

The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence, Inc. (LICADD) was awarded a $5,000 grant from the Richard & Mary Morrison Foundation for the Building Unique Dynamic and Diverse Youth (BUDDY) program.

The highly successful BUDDY (Building Unique, Dynamic, and Diverse Youth) Mentoring Program was established in 2009 with $150,000 in competitive federal grant funding from the Administration for Children and Families, BUDDY addresses the critical needs of the most vulnerable members of our community, children whose parents have been incarcerated due to substance abuse.

Meals for Vets Students in the East Islip Middle School Builders Club, known for their service to veterans and military members, were recently asked to spearhead a new meal program for Long Island veterans attending Project 9 Line classes in Amityville. The Builders Club members enthusiastically agreed, and along with their families, successfully

prepared meals for local veterans twice a week during February and March.

The students – joined in the effort by former club members like high school freshman Brian McCarthy, who remain in touch with the club – helped coordinate volunteers who cooked or delivered the meals. Also participating were East Islip graduates

like Gina Tortelli, district staff and local veterans’ family members such as Denise Gallo, the mother of deployed Long Islander Justin Gallo.

“Our veterans have given so much for us and East Islip’s support means that their sacrifices will not be forgotten,” said Project 9 Line Patrick Donohue.

Young Leaders In preparation for college and career readiness, the East Islip School-Business Partnership coordinated a K-12 district initiative to educate and facilitate leadership opportunities for sixth-grade students at East Islip Middle School.

The initiative began at the end of January, when members of the East Islip High School National Honor Society visited sixth-grade health classes at the middle school to discuss the importance of leadership, community service and citizenship.

The NHS members introduced opportunities

for the sixth-graders to develop community service projects for younger students in the afterschool programs at the district’s Connetquot and Timber Point elementary schools.

Interested students attended a lesson-planning workshop sponsored by the middle school student government in order to fine-tune their proposals.

The completed proposals were then submitted to student government adviser Dawn Zeffiro.

The middle school students’ leadership activities were scheduled for the month of March,

and the students planned and implemented fun-filled lessons at the afterschool programs at Connetquot and Timber Point, including Dr. Seuss and St. Patrick’s Day themed activities, bracelet making, fortune teller creations, game shows, flag and European handball games, and basketball clinics.

“The districtwide program was a huge success and the SchoolBusiness Partnership looks forward to expanding the program next year,” said Zeffiro.

99 Years Young Recently Legislator Tom Barraga and Councilman Steve Flotteron joined in the 99th birthday celebration for precentenarian Esther Cohen at the East Neck Nursing and Rehabilitation Center located in West Babylon, New York.

Esther was born on April 6th, 1917 in Hoboken, New Jersey, moved to the Bronx, and later to Bay Shore, New York.

She survives her husband Abraham, has two sons, Jack and Martin; three grandchildren, Adam, Craig and Yizchak; and

three great grandchildren, Yoni, Channah and Nesya.

Esther has always been an extremely socially active person. She is a member of the West Islip Senior Citizen Center and a member of Bally Total Fitness Gym for over 39 years.

Doctorate Earned

Robert J. Wottawa II, who was named the East Islip School District’s new director of art and music last August, was recently awarded a doctoral degree from LIU Post.

Dr. Wottawa previously served as as department chairperson for music

and fine arts at Longwood School District, and earned his bachelor’s degree in classical guitar performance from Franklin Pierce University and his master’s degree in music education from LIU Post.

His research, defended at Post on December 15th,

elicited expert advice from mentor teachers to improve first-year teachers and their first-year experience throughout Long Island and the lower metropolitan area. The research focused on the development of tacit knowledge and transference of that knowledge to others in order to improve education. His work was published through the ProQuest library database and can be accessed for free.

“I had always hoped to complete my doctorate, and I now I hope to provide positive impact to our field through scholarly articles and presentations across the United States,” said Dr. Wottawa.

EXTRAORDINARY WOMAN - Suffolk County Legislator Tom Cilmi recognized Kathy Koenigsdorf, founder of the Jake Koenigsdorf Foundation as the 2016 10th District “Woman of Distinction.” After the loss of her son Jake to a heroin overdose, East Islip resident Kathy Koenigsdorf founded the Jake Koenigsdorf Foundation to raise awareness, offer support and provide funding to treat addicts who could otherwise not afford it. In just two years the Foundation has raised $125,000 and has helped 154 people receive treatment.

Students enrolled in the Academy at Bixhorn Technical Center Plumbing and Heating Program learn the basics of installing, servicing, and repairing domestic sanitation systems, water heaters, and home heating units.

Teacher Frank Esposito says that handson applications allow for practical learning experiences.

As the students build their skills and train on the latest technology, they look to secure employment.

Recently, Esposito took the students to the Plumbers Local #200 of the United Association in Bohemia. They were given a tour and explored career opportunities available through the union.

Esposito said, “The Plumbers Union offers apprenticeship and journeymen training programs.

Students graduating from my class will have an advantage because they are learning fundamental skills. If they get accepted into an

apprenticeship program, their skills will increase because they will be working with and learning from the best trained contractors.”

Students in the Plumbing and Heating Program have the option of taking the National Center for Construction Education Research (NCCER) exam and are placed on the NCCER’s National Registry. The registry provides valuable industry credentials.

Character Mural The Connetquot Elementary School’s PTA – in coordination with the East Islip High School art department, high school art teacher Daniel Figliozzi and Connetquot art teacher Elizabeth Sullivan-Gibbons – recently recruited talented art students from the high school to paint a massive mural in the elementary school’s cafeteria.

The students, including

senior Bryant Weingarten, sophomore Zoe Stengel and freshmen Jenna Bosco and Gen Imhof, submitted sketches and worked collaboratively over several months with Sullivan-Gibbons to create a fabulous painting on the wall, displaying storybook favorites such as Charlie Brown, Harold and the Purple Crayon and various Dr. Seuss characters.

“These high school

artists have dedicated their own time to create a colorful and vibrant piece of artwork,” said Connetquot Principal Deborah Smith. “The students of Connetquot have been watching their progress and seeing the artwork come to fruition.

The characters seem so vivid that they have come to life due to the enormous talents of this artistic group.”

Full of Fun On Literacy Night, students from Islip’s Wing Elementary School participated in fun activities including bingo games and a book swap, where they were able to

exchange books with their peers. Also in attendance were guest authors and members of the Islip Elks Club, who donated books to each Wing student.

The annual event took

place on March 16th, during the two-week period that Wing celebrates its Parents as Reading Partners program.

Scholarship Winner

Suffolk County Community College graduate Quinn Favilla had not planned on attending college at Suffolk.

Favilla’s plan included wrapping up a successful senior year at East Islip High School where she had excelled both academically and athletically as a

member of the track team and then to attend one of the many college’s she had been accepted to that were offering her considerable scholarship money.

In Favilla’s grand plan, she would attend Binghamton University and run Division 1 track after her 2012 high school

graduation.

Then fate intervened.

A running injury caused Favilla to rethink where should would attend college.

“It didn’t make sense to spend the money, go into debt, and go away to a D1 school and not be able to do what I originally was going away for,” Favilla said. “Plus, I still needed to see a doctor for my injury, and needed physical therapy. My dad convinced me to go to Suffolk for a year and try it out.”

It was at Suffolk that Favilla acquired a love of math and ultimately was awarded the Frey Family Foundation Scholarship that paid for her continuing studies at Stony Brook University where she is now a senior finishing her degree in Applied Mathematics and Statistics and interning

at a computer technology company in Manhattan.

Favilla recently met Robert Frey of Port Jefferson, who will be honored by Suffolk County Community College at its annual Salute to Excellence Gala on May 5th.

Favilla was overjoyed to meet the benefactor whose scholarship allowed her to continue her studies. The Frey Family Foundation Scholarship awarded to mathematics majors provides $20,000 per academic year to deserving students.

“The scholarship has provided nearly $270,000 in awards since 2004 to 30 students,” said Sylvia A. Diaz, Ph.D., LMSW, executive director of the Suffolk Community College Foundation.

“You not only helped me financially,” Favilla told Frey, “but you reminded

me of what it feels like to be a winner again. Your scholarship helped me pay for my entire first semester at Stony Brook University, freeing me up to work and save for my senior year, and now I am debt free. Awarding me that scholarship reminded me of what it felt like to be a success in something after putting in hard work, determination and effort. After I got injured, I didn’t know if I’d ever get that winning feeling again and it felt good. You reminded me that I can achieve anything I set my mind to and work hard to achieve it, and I carried that over with me to Stony Brook University, where I’ve continued to work, learn and succeed. Suffolk was, and always will be, considered the building block to the start of my success,” Favilla said.

“Despite being one of the most affordable colleges in New York, the Suffolk Community College Foundation awarded nearly $600,000 in scholarships and aid to students last year. The annual gala helps raise a significant amount of the funds the foundation awards through merit and need-based scholarships,” Diaz said.

East Islip Middle School’s eighth-grade Girls Leaders Club made two trips in March to the Long Island State Veterans Home in Stony Brook to visit and create holiday crafts with the resident veterans. The club members also had the opportunity to sit and

talk with the vets about their service experiences and learn about different branches of the military.

“This is a valuable intergenerational experience and a winwin situation for both the students and the veterans,” said club adviser Diane

Wahrenburg.

“When I asked my students about the most valuable thing they took away from this visit, the majority said they liked talking to the vets about their wartime experiences and gaining insight into their lives.”

Wildlife Win After watching a television program on endangered animals, and feeling her heartstrings tug, Kelly Waldron, a fifthgrader at East Islip’s Ruth C. Kinney Elementary School was inspired to act, raising $101.11 for the World Wildlife Fund.

As soon as the program was over, Waldron immediately began conducting Internet research on

endangered animals and the foundations that raise money to help their cause. She scheduled an appointment with RCK Principal Hillary K. Bromberg to ask about ideas for how she could help, which Bromberg helped her fine-tune.

On February 26th, Waldron set up a booth at the school PTA’s Winter Zingo event, selling handmade handmade

Rainbow Loom bracelets, assisted by friend Emily Lyons, as well as Zingo flags for participants to hold. Waldron also created a poster board of information about the World Wildlife Fund, to which she donated the proceeds of $101.11.

“Kelly is a very special fifth-grader and we are all so proud of her ambition,” said Dr. Bromberg.

Outdoor Classroom

Islip Middle School Principal Timothy Martin and teacher AnnMarie Mills were recently invited to attend a luncheon at the Greentree Foundation.

In collaboration with the Seatuck Environmental Association, the two educators shared the “Nature-Centered Outdoor Classroom” concept with other school districts from across Long Island. This luncheon provided an opportunity for teachers who participated in the Greentree Teacher’s Ecology Workshop last year to share their implementations and reflections.

Mills attended the

weeklong Greentree course last summer in search of a new viewpoint on science education. She left the workshop with tremendous knowledge on the natural environment and a renewed outlook on the structure of a science classroom and curriculum.

With this newfound inspiration, the NatureCentered Outdoor Classroom was born. The curriculum is infused with current science topics that are relevant to the local ecosystem and community. For example, Orowoc Lake and Pardees Pond have become the blackboard for daily lessons. According to Dr.

Martin, the students look forward to being outside and find their teacher’s newfound passion for nature contagious, as they are more excited, engaged and connected with their natural environment than ever before.

“When learning outside, the students are so physically and mentally involved with their learning that they are often unaware of the rigor of their content,” said Mills.

“I look forward to a future where being outside with my students is the norm and hope to inspire others OUTDOOR CLASSROOM - Islip Middle School Principal Timothy Martin, teacher to do the same.”
