BOY SCOUT EARNS HIS EAGLE SCOUT BADGE - Eagle Scout Jacob Arens, from East Islip, with his parents, Diane and Eagle Scout Mike Arens. and has been awarded the Troop 205 “Top Ten” Attendance, Participation, and Preparedness Award.

Jacob recently said this: “Ever since I was young, I was encouraged to become a Boy Scout and help my community. I was taught about being kind in every situation and create new friends every day.”

Jacob is currently a senior at East Islip High School, East Islip, NY, where he has achieved Honor Roll status in each and every quarter since the 9th Grade. Jacob is a three–year member and Captain of his high school Mock Trial Team, where he has competed in the Empire World Tournament from 2017 to the present, where his team competed with teams from 37 states and eight countries across the world. Jacob attended the EDNY Justice Institute Summer Program in 2018, where his team placed “first” in the competition.

Jacob also participated in the Harvard Mock Trial Program in 2018. He also competed in the NYSBA (New York State Bar

Association) Mock Trial Tournament from 2018 to present.

Volunteering has been a way of life for Jacob as he has worked on many Eagle Scout Projects and has logged in 44 community Service Hours through Troop 205. Jacob is also an Usher at the Trinity Lutheran Church, Islip, NY. Upon his high school graduation, Jacob will be attending John Carroll University in University Heights, OH where he plans to major in their History and MBA joint program and play rugby.

He also plans to attend Law School.

Jacob is the son of a very supportive Scouting family with his Mother, Diane, along with his father and Troop 205 Assistant Scoutmaster Mike Arens, and his older brother and former Troop 205 Scout, Eddie Arens. Jacob also continues an Arens family tradition of Eagle Scouts which includes his father, two uncles – Rich and Dan Arens and his cousin, Scott Arens.

New York Blood Center Announces A Blood Emergency

New York Blood Center (NYBC) announces a blood shortage in the region, one year after New York was the epicenter of the pandemic.

Before COVID-19, donors could stop by community blood drives at convenient locations like high schools, colleges, and offices. It has been one year since these groups had to cancel their blood drives due to COVID-19 and few have been able to resume these life-saving events.

NYBC currently has a 4 day supply of blood, which is well below what is needed by area hospitals. New York’s healthcare system requires 1,500 donations each day to

treat patients ranging from trauma victims to newborn babies and their mothers to cancer patients. Donors with type O and type B blood are especially needed as NYBC currently has a 1-2 day supply of these blood types.

“With thousands of New Yorkers getting vaccinated each day, we are thrilled to watch our state recover from this catastrophic year,” said Andrea Cefarelli, Senior Executive Director at New York Blood Center. “As New York bounces back in strides this spring, we need everyone to make an appointment and donate blood to help save lives. While the end of the pandemic is near, our

struggle to fight for those in need continues.”

We are taking extra precautions to help prevent the person-to-person spread of COVID-19. As always, people are not eligible to donate if they’re experiencing a cold, sore throat, respiratory infection or flu-like symptoms.

Jacob Arens, East Islip, New York, successfully completed his Eagle Board of Review on June 11, 2020, officially making him the 92nd Eagle Scout of Troop 205 of Great River, East Islip, and Islip Terrace, NY. Jacob’s Eagle Court of Honor will be held on Saturday, May 15, 2021, starting at 11:00AM in the Fellowship Hall at Trinity Lutheran Church, 111 Nassau Avenue, Islip, NY. Any New York State COVID related safety rules in effect at that time such as guest limits and masks will be implemented for the ceremony.

Jacob is a member of Troop 205, sponsored by the Great River Fire Department, under the direction of Scoutmaster Mark Businski. On his “Road to Eagle,” Jacob has served Troop 205 as Senior Patrol Leader for five terms, Chaplain’s Aide, Historian, and Troop Guide – working with his younger Scouts on their Rank Advancements.

To become an Eagle Scout, a Scout must earn 21 merit badges, of which 13 are specifically Eagle required, progress through six rank advancements – from Tenderfoot, Second Class, First Class, Star, Life, then Eagle, and also plan, develop, and implement a major service project for the community. Jacob has actually earned 32 merit badges.

The Service Project that Jacob developed, planned, and implemented with the assistance of his immediate and extended family members due to COVID restrictions, was planning, purchasing, and installing 200 feet of white, attractive two-rail, western style fence at his home Church – Trinity Lutheran – along Union Blvd, Islip, NY. Jacob has also earned the following awards and achievement in Scouts: Webelos Arrow of Light, Firem’n Chit, Tot’in Chit, Cyber Chip, Scuba BSA,

Noelle Stanuch is a Smithtown resident who is fundraising for clean, safe and reliable water in sub-Saharan Africa for the second time through The Water Project, a non-profit organization.

This organization provides reliable water projects to communities in sub-Saharan Africa who suffer needlessly from a lack of access to clean water and proper sanitation. For each gift you make to The Water Project, you will eventually receive a report that details the technology used, the location of the effort, the number of people it serves and photographs of the process and completed water project.

“Can you imagine not having access to safe drinking water?

Not having clean water to shower with? Not knowing if the water you cook with will make you ill? I can’t, but I

don’t take what I have for granted,” Noelle said. “There is a real issue in today’s society.

We tend to not think about what we don’t live around or what we don’t see often. There are so many people suffering around the world and we need to help them.”

There is a water crisis affecting women, children, families and farmers. Every day in rural communities throughout subSaharan Africa, there are millions of people that suffer from a lack of access to clean, safe water. Women and girls there are spending so much time fetching dirty water, which leads to illness and disease.

Globally, 1 in 9 people still have no access to clean water, however, in the communities The Water Project serves, it’s 9 out of 9.

“So many of us are fortunate enough that throughout this pandemic we not only

knew that we should wash our hands often, but we had clean water to do so. That is not reality for everyone.

God has given me so many ways that I can help others! I want to make a change...I feel called to make a change.

I’m excited to see if I can reach my fundraising goal and see where God leads me next. To anyone who will donate to my fundraiser, I thank you so much. It truly means a lot to me to have your support.”

During her last fundraising efforts, Noelle was able to raise thousands of dollars.
