The iconic Camp Sunshine Polar Dip Series recently concluded and raised $217,000 this winter. Local teams from the Northeast to the Mid-Atlantic participated in local dips, plunging into the icy waters of the Atlantic Ocean, lakes, rivers and several different polar pools!

“We’re thankful that we can still count on people to unpack their swimsuits each winter and take a quick dip into freezing cold water to support Camp Sunshine,” said Michael Smith, Development Director at Camp Sunshine.“ A couple seconds of cold are nothing in comparison to what Camp Sunshine families face on a daily basis. And just like that, spring has arrived, with its bursts of warm sunshine coaxing the flower blossoms from beneath the winter-hardened soil. The Easter Bunny has already come and gone, and plans are well underway for summer vacations and the tantalizing temptation of beach season.

Seems we were only just beginning to put together our Christmas shopping lists not so long ago, doesn’t it?

It’s funny, how this concept of time seems to work its way into nearly every conversation in one respect or another the lack of it, its tendency to pass by too quickly… seldom have I heard the argument that there is simply too much time to know what to do with.

Never, in fact. Seems this would be a rather enviable problem to have. But alas, this is most certainly not the case.

As with most of life’s

struggles, it is how we choose to deal with, and hopefully, to overcome these issues that is the most important.

Redirecting our focus constantly, from wallowing in the negativity of why did this happen? to being proactive in setting a plan for what would I like to happen? going forward.

No use dwelling on the past; we need to be present in order to look to the future with anything resembling a clear perspective.

They say hindsight is 20/20; but is it truly? I would argue that, even upon reflecting on past events, I do not have an unequivocal assessment of how things might have turned out differently; or even, if they should have. No, I am a firm believer that all things happen for a reason, even if that reason is not immediately - or ever - apparent. Some things are simply not meant to be

understood beyond a shadow of a doubt. Life is nothing if not filled with unexpected twists and turns, and a touch of the unknown.

I recently came across a quote which said, in part, that it is not truly the unknown which we fear; but rather, what we think we know of the unknown. What an interesting concept, this notion that most of our apprehensions are selfmade and, if we would only take care to take a step back and let things play out a bit, perhaps we would be pleasantly surprised as to the outcome.

Spring is traditionally seen as a time of growth and progress, naturally and otherwise. The seeds must be planted and cultivated, in hopes of a fruitful season.

Whether things blossom as we wish, well, that remains to be seen. As with most things, only time will tell.

Holmes is the first individual in the department to have reached this milestone. We are never too old to learn through play!”

Friends of Karen

Friends of Karen is a nonprofit organization that supports critically-ill children and their families.

This year, they are celebrating their 40th anniversary; four decades of bringing help, hope and support to over 15,000 children and their families in the tri-state area. I had the pleasure of meeting with some of their staff members to grasp a better understanding of all they have done and all they continue to do for those in need.

In 1978, Friends of Karen began with one family, one child, Karen MacInnes; and one inspired woman, Sheila Petersen, who wanted to sustain her close friends through the devastating illness of their daughter. Today, Friends of Karen serves hundreds of families by providing emotional, financial and advocacy support to children with life-threatening illnesses, and to their families in order to help keep them stable, functioning and able to cope, at no cost.

To apply for help, a parent or guardian of the ill child must call the organization and speak to a member of their Family Support Team. It is apparent to me that Friends of Karen wants whomever is going through a tough and unimaginable critical illness to know that they are not alone and that help is available for them.

Friends of Karen often hosts or participates in many events within their community. On Saturday, May 5th and Sunday, May 6th, they are hosting a team in the Long Island Marathon at

Eisenhower Park in East Meadow.

Saturday will be a 5K and Sunday will be a 10K. They are looking for people to join their Friends of Karen team and to cross the finish line knowing they’re making a difference in the lives of many. If you are interested in participating in either or both of these races with colleagues, as a family or individually, you can sign up today! Additionally, if you are interested in volunteering your time preparing for the event - handing out t-shirts, making sure every participant has what he or she needs, etc.; or at the event - taking photos for promotional purposes, you can do so. Savor these beautiful (and edible) flowers C ultivating beautiful blooms is a popular pastime for gardeners near and far. While gazing at a yard full of vibrant colors or enjoying the aroma of freshly cut blooms is enough for many gardeners, others may want to embrace a long-enduring tradition — growing edible flowers.

Some can be poisonous or cause severe gastrointestinal upset when consumed.

That means all flowers should be carefully researched prior to experimenting with them in the kitchen.

To begin growing — and eating — edible flowers, refer to this list of varieties deemed safe and be careful to double-check against allergies and any interactions with medications prior to use.

Cooking with edible flowers is a trend that has endured for centuries. According to Fleurs Gourmandes, the first recorded history of edible flowers occurred in 140 BC. Use of calendula in salads dates back to the ancient Greeks and Romans.

Victorian-era candied flowers and flowerencrusted sweets took edible flowers to new heights. Today, nothing may make a meal seem more gourmet than the inclusion of flower petals in the recipe.

Allium: These are blossoms from the allium family, which include garlic, chives and leeks. These flowers can be used to add flavor to foods.

Of course, before delving into the expanded world of cooking using edible blooms, some notes of caution should first be mentioned. Avoid flowers that may have been sprayed with fungicides, herbicides or insecticides. To verify safety, only use edible flowers grown specifically for this purpose, not flowers picked from

Fennel: Just like the plant itself, the flowers of fennel have a subtle licorice flavor.

Calendula: Sometimes known as “poor man’s saffron,” this yellow flower in the

Create a teenfriendly space at home

T

eenagers are busier than ever before. But even the busiest teens need places to unwind and relax with friends. Many parents aspire to create that type of environment in their homes but don’t know where to begin.

Parents who want to keep teens nearby can create hangout spaces at home that make it easy for teens to feel comfortable with their friends. These “teen caves” can be private but permit supervision when necessary. With a few modifications, it’s possible to transform a room in a home into a teen-friendly hangout space.

Have a snack station. Some teenagers always seem to be hungry, and hanging out with friends while enjoying food is a popular pastime. When renovating a room into a teen cave, find a way to make food a focus. Install a mini-refrigerator and nonalcoholic bar where kids can serve snacks to friends. Think about a space you would like as an adult and modify it to be more accommodating to teenagers.

How to hang photos and artwork with ease Personal touches turn a house into a home. Hanging pictures, whether they’re personal photographs or artwork, can really change the character of a room.

Unfortunately, some people may not know the proper ways to display pictures on a wall. Design maven Martha Stewart advises that the first step is to gather all of the pictures that are in consideration for hanging. This will enable a person to see what is available and edit their selection based on the space available, theme or color scheme. Having the artwork there enables a person to move it around like a puzzle until the placement feels just right.

Next, plan on hanging artwork at 57 inches on center, according to the renovation experts at Apartment Therapy. “On center” means the middle of the photograph or painting will always be at 57,” as this measurement represents the average human eye height. This height is regularly used as a standard in many galleries and museums.

Home improvement resource Today’s Homeowner also suggests using self-adhesive rubber bumpers to the bottom corners on the back of the frame before hanging so that the picture will not damage the wall and will help it hang level.

It can take a few attempts to hang pictures correctly, but with practice it should come with greater ease. The good news is there are new products constantly being evolved to make picture hanging easier, including those that enable removal and relocation of artwork without damaging walls.

Boy Scout Troop 43 Chartered by St Peters Episcopal Church of Bay Shore and Troop 245 of East Islip, had the honor and privilege of attending the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy’s, Kings Point Eagle Scout Association’s invitational camporee, March 23rd-March 25th, 2018.

about the rich history of the USMMA and had the opportunity to participate in many hands on interactive activities with the staff and midshipman of the academy. They learned about Engineering, Diesel and Steam Engines, Marine Navigation, Safety, Firefighting at sea.

Legislator Steven J. Flotteron congratulated Scout John Raymond Donovan from Boy Scouts of America Troop 205, Great River on achieving the rank of Eagle Scout.

Donovan was the Troop’s 73rd Eagle Scout.

To become an Eagle Scout, the Scout must earn 21 merit badges, of which 12 are specifically Eagle required, progress through six rank advancements, from Tenderfoot, Second

Class, First Class, Star, Life, then Eagle, and also plan, develop and implement a major service project for the community.

Donovan exceeded the requirement by earning 30 merit badges. His Service Project was the development and implementation of two information boards at each of the entrances of the Little League of the Islips complex. More than 200 hours and 37 workers were

invested in this project, with Scout Donovan’s leadership and supervision.

“Boys such as Scout Donovan who are committed to this declaration of principles and hard work are awarded Scouting’s highest honor, the Eagle. This achievement is a rarity, accomplished by only two percent of all scouts,” said Legislator Flotteron.

Bowling All-Stars Juniors Julia Bocamazo and Julianna Spina represented East Islip High School as members of the Section XI girls bowling team that won the state title this month.

The team – also featuring Hannah Manetta of Comsewogue, Taylor Eggert of Kings Park, Rachel Hines of Longwood and Amanda Naujokas of Sachem – featured the six

student-athletes with the highest averages in Suffolk County. Bocamazo finished with a 222.2 average, while Spina finished with a 218.1 average.
