The March of Time “Most of us take for granted that time ﬂies, meaning that it passes too quickly. But in the mindful state, time doesn’t really pass at all. There is only a single instant of time that keeps renewing itself over and over with inﬁnite variety.” ~ Deepak Chopra Time, without fail, is the one thing we all wish we had more of, made better use of, didn’t squander so liberally… and the one thing we can never get back once it is lost. Even with this insight, though, it tends to continue to pass us by, just out of grasp. Why is that? What is the driving force behind our ability to let the minutes lapse into hours, the hours into days, the days into a downward spiral of being complacently, and consistently, unproductive? Some would point to the company we keep, the environments which surround us, the choices we make

along the way that lead us to find comfort - even in our misery, at times - but comfort, nonetheless. Is it our great fear of change, of upsetting the routine, which leads us to sit back and watch as the world parades on by? There are those who make it their mission to take action, regardless of the unfavorable circumstances they may find themselves thrown into; but these individuals seem to represent a slim minority. How do we, the others, this great majority who desire to improve our lot in life, follow suit? Perhaps if these instants of time were filled with the “infinite variety” Chopra speaks of, life would not seem so mundane at intervals. But the fluctuations which occur are often too minor to register as true growth. It seems we, as a society, are incapable of feeling we are moving forward unless we are in the midst of tumult and upheaval.

The wish, always, is to find this path to progress and to have it be a steady - if uphill - journey. That, I think, is something we would all find ourselves infinitely more capable of sustaining. Time, on a road such as that, would travel with us, even, on pace; rather than sprinting miles ahead, leaving us in the rearview mirror. It may pass regardless, but at least we would be along for the ride, active participants in how we choose to use it rather than bystanders waiting for some phantom sign that this is it … NOW is your time! In reality “the” time is when you choose to acknowledge it, when you make it your mission to take control of your destiny and be a part of the process, instead of allowing it to happen to you. We know this, we believe this in the depths of our souls… now we need to use this knowledge to create the beautiful future we envision for ourselves.

Sporting Goods and radio stations 106.1 WBLI and 102.3 WBAB. “Freshwater fishing is an activity the whole family can enjoy, especially on Long Island,” Regional Director Carrie M. Gallagher said. “The spring fishing festival at Belmont Lake State Park is an excellent way to kick off the fishing season and introduce your family to the sport with no license needed to participate. At this festival, you can learn about freshwater fishing opportunities on Long Island and local fishing clubs, try your hand at fishing for trout, and the kids can participate in the casting contest and other fun activities.” Festival activities begin at 10 a.m., and are provided free of charge. Activities include open fishing, fishing instruction, fly casting demonstrations, and fish cleaning services. DEC and local fishing clubs will also set up information displays. Loaner rods and free bait will be available to participants throughout the day. As the supply of loaner rods is limited, participants are encouraged to bring their own fishing tackle if possible. Children’s activities include the “Spring Fling” casting contest, as well

Welcome Friends of Greater Port Jefferson, Inc., DBA Welcome Friends

The Welcome Friends soup kitchens have provided hot, nutritious meals five days every week for over 27 years. The volunteer staff has increased to more than 200 remarkable members, and the guests typically number between 50 to sometimes more than 70 each night. Welcome Friends operates with a 100% volunteer staffed organization, assuring contributors that their donations are used exclusively for the preparation and serving of meals. The volunteers together form an outstanding team that addresses hunger and works to expand relationships with individual supporters,

local food markets, farm stands, religious institutions, community leaders, local village government and other agencies. After almost three decades serving the greater Port Jefferson area, the leaders and volunteers of Port Jefferson’s Soup announced their decision to become an independent not-for-profit corporation named “Welcome Friends.” The operation has become self-sustaining, with a solid foundation of local community support. Welcome Friends is currently in need of the following volunteer positions: Cooks, Assistant Cooks/ Food Prep and Pick Up/Delivery and a Grant Writer. Children participating in the casting contest will have a chance to win some great prizes supplied by DEC’s I FISH NY Program and The Natural Heritage Trust. Governor Cuomo has expanded recreational opportunities of residents and tourists, positioning New York State as a recreation destination, connecting communities to state lands, and improving the quality of life. Governor Cuomo’s NY Open for Fishing and Hunting Initiative is an effort to improve recreational opportunities for sportsmen and women and to boost tourism activities throughout the state. This includes streamlining fishing and hunting licenses, reducing license fees, improving access for fishing, and increasing hunting opportunities in the state. In support of this initiative, $10 million in NY Works funding has been dedicated to fish hatchery repairs and 50 new land and water access projects such as boat launches, hunting blinds, trails, and parking areas. The Spring Fishing Festival has been designated a Free Fishing Event, so the freshwater fishing license requirement for anglers age 16 and older has been suspended for this event only. After 4 p.m., anglers will need a valid NYS freshwater fishing license to legally fish. The festival highlights DEC’s spring (March and April) trout stocking program in Nassau and Suffolk counties. Prior to the festival, Belmont Lake will be stocked with close to 1,000 brown, brook and rainbow trout by DEC. Additional brook and rainbow trout will be stocked by State Parks. Upper Twin Pond in

Family Fishing Festival

Weekend LIRR schedules to change during construction March 24–25 New signal testing and construction work will affect Long Island Rail Road train service between Penn Station and Port Jefferson, Hicksville and Ronkonkoma, and Penn Station and Port Washington over the weekend of March 24–25. If you are planning to travel on this weekend, please make note of the following:

Huntington/Port Jefferson Branch •

Train service between Penn Station and Huntington will be reduced from half-hourly to hourly, while trains between Huntington and Port Jefferson will run every two hours to accommodate the testing of new signals.

Buses will replace trains between Hicksville and Ronkonkoma for 48 hours due to construction related to the Double Track project.

Port Washington Branch •

Service will be reduced from half-hourly to hourly on the Port Washington Branch for 48 hours for Positive Train Control testing. These service changes will also be in effect on the weekends of April 7–8 and April 14–15.

Coat Collection Students from East Islip High School’s Interact Club recently partnered with One Warm Coat to hold a coat drive in the high school. Guided by adviser Lisa Rapeijko, more than 70 coats were collected and donated to Long Island Cares for distribution to Long Island residents.

“There is a real need for coats in our local community, and One Warm Coat’s program made it easy for us to make a difference,” said Autumn Nelson, the Interact Club’s co-president. “We had a goal of collecting 30 coats, and we doubled our expectations,”

said Courtney Herrera, also a club co-president “Our students enjoy helping others in the community and appreciate knowing their efforts will ensure that coats are given to any person in need, without charge, discrimination or obligation,” said Rapiejko. ROCKET LAUNCH - The American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics Club from Stony Brook University visited Gardiner Manor School to launch several different rockets. Scholars from Mr. LaRuina’s class learned about model rocketry prior to the launches, and experienced several successful and not-so-successful launches. Some of the rockets were equipped with parachutes and altimeters, which recorded altitude. Once the rocket landed, an audible beeping sound could be decoded to determine the altitude. The audible sound also helped scholars locate the rocket in the snow or brush.

America’s Boating Course

America’s Boating Club is offering the United States Power Squadron America’s Boating Course at the slip Public Library, 71 Monell Avenue in Islip, beginning on Saturday, April 21st, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The course will also take place on Saturday, April 28th, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Completing the course by attending both course dates and passing the exam on the second class date qualifies for New York State boater’s and PWC (jet ski) license and further qualifies as a boating license in all states that have license requirements such as Connecticut, New Jersey and Florida. At the present time, New York State requires all persons 20 years old and younger operating a motorized vessel in State waters to take a boating

safety class with classroom instruction on boating and PWC safety (applicable laws, PFC requirements, VHF use, fueling, weather, docking, anchoring, rules of the road, basic boating knowledge etc.) followed by a written exam. New York State also requires all persons of any age operating a personal water craft (jet ski) to take a safety course. Most boat insurers will offer a continuing ten percent discount to boaters successfully completing the course. America’s Boating Club requires all children under 18 to be accompanied by an adult at all times during the class, even if the adult does not take the course. The course is available to the public of those that are at least 10 years of age. This course will be taught by United States

The East Islip High School varsity boys bowling team, a perennial powerhouse under coach Bob Cheadle, finished off another season in style, being named Suffolk County champions and earning second place in New York State on March

10 in Syracuse. It was the Redmen’s second consecutive county championship – a rare feat – and its fourth in the last six years. For the county contest, team members included seniors Justin Orobello (237.33 average in six

games), James Spina (213 in six games), Eric Tadler (224.6 in five games) and Anthony Valente (245 in one game); junior Aaron Rice (213 in five games); sophomore Sonny Pico (233.67 in six games) and freshman Joe Zagari (290 in one game).

PFA RECOGNIZED - On February 28th, the Bay Shore Board of Education recognized and thanked the South Country School Parent Faculty Association (PFA) for a generous donation. Two heroic educators at East Islip’s Timber Point Elementary School were honored for their recent first aid actions during a March 8th Board of Education meeting. Both successfully performing the Heimlich

maneuver, kindergarten teacher Michele Brodtman saved a child who was choking on a Fruit Roll-Ups snack, while paraprofessional Deborah Keating saved a child who was choking on a chicken nugget during lunch.

To celebrate Women’s History Month, Eastern Suffolk BOCES Adult Education Literacy students at Bixhorn Technical Center studied Harriet Tubman, the most famous “conductor” of the Underground Railroad, also referred to as “Moses” because she led her people to freedom. With support and direction from Art Teacher Danielle Miller, Literacy students created quilts with secret messages. The activity helped the students learn about American history and culture. The students created Underground Railroad quilt code patterns such as North Star, which meant follow the Big Dipper; Shoofly, this symbol identified a friendly guide; Crossroads, referred to Cleveland Ohio, a destination offering routes to freedom; Flying Geese, and Log Cabin, a
