Photo Contest Entries are now being accepted for the Gurwin Jewish Nursing & Rehabilitation Center’s Annual Photo Contest.

Now in its 21st year, the contest offers amateur photographers an opportunity to enter photographs in ten categories: Landscapes, Travel, People, Pets, Children, Wildlife, Nature, Still Life, Computer Manipulated and Student.

A maximum of five entries per photographer at $5 each will be accepted.

Photographs will be judged by a panel of professional judges at the close of the contest, and winners will be chosen based on clarity, composition, subject matter and suitability for display at the Center.

Several days after Behan’s dismissal, he crept back into the house in the dead of night. With an axe, he butchered Wickham and his wife, Frances, and fled to a nearby swamp.

Behan was captured, tried, convicted and, on December 15th, 1854 became one of the last people to be hanged in Suffolk County.

Both the high school and middle school kickline teams in East Islip won at the Long Island Kickline Association Championships, held in Uniondale on February 9th.

The high school team overcame a very challenging year, and struggled to reach the top. Having placed second and third at previous competitions, the students worked hard each week to improve their technique and change choreography to give the judges exactly what they were looking for. “In all of my years of coaching, this was the

most challenging, but at the same time most rewarding,” said coach Denise Naccarato. “Having to push these girls to work harder and harder and change choreography after every competition made winning the championship the sweetest win ever. Aside from the win, these girls learned a life lesson that I am hoping will stick with them forever – if you want something bad enough and you work hard for it, it will happen.”

The middle school team, coached by Christina Inghingolo and Kelsey Krumholz, had a remarkable undefeated

season. “We started in midOctober, which is very late considering other schools start choreography and practices the first week of school, said Inghingolo.

“So as coaches, we felt a lot of pressure to get the choreography done and be ready, and I’m sure the girls felt it too. But they pulled it together and did an amazing job. We are really proud of them.”

Added Naccarato, “I’m looking forward to having their upcoming ninthgraders on my team next year.”

“Noelle was chosen

out of many applicants due to her impressive musical background and talent,” said Timber Point’s orchestra director, Jaime DeMaria. “We are all so proud of her as she represents Timber Point and East Islip on her musical journey.”

“The entire family is extremely proud of and excited for Noelle,” said her mother, Danielle Naccarato, who serves as principal at the district’s Ruth C. Kinney Elementary. “This is a wonderful opportunity and such a great honor.”

The Usdan Center, a not-for-profit summer arts camp in Wheatley Heights, is now in its 46th season and enrolls 1,600 students each year, ages 6-18. Usdan features more than 40 different programs of study, including orchestra.

In Search Of Sunsets There’s a saying that goes, “Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away.” The goal, as I see it, is to capture as many of these moments as possible and preserve them in your memory. For me, this process is only enhanced by my love of photography.

Islip student Madelyn Marinelli is proving that a big heart, determination to succeed and the kindness of others is what matters when it comes to being charitable.

Since January, the Commack Road Elementary School fifth-grader has been

participating in the Entenmann’s Little Bites Brigade and gathering support from CRES, Maud S. Sherwood Elementary School and Islip Middle School.

“My goal is to turn trash into cash by collecting as many empty Entenmann’s Little Bites pouches as we can and shipping them to TerraCycle to raise points,” said Madelyn. According to its website, TerraCycle is a highly awarded, international upcycling and recycling company that collects difficult-to-recycle packaging and products and repurposes the material into affordable, innovative products.

For each pouch that is recycled, Madelyn receives points, which are then turned into cash. The cash raised is donated to one of two charities designated by Madelyn – Feed America and Charity Water. “If we all help, we can provide so many people in America and around the world with food and clean drinking water,” said Madelyn.

In only six weeks, Islip participants have collected 1,053 Little Bites pouches. The pouches have translated into providing 149 people with clean water for one week and 36 meals to Americans facing hunger. The program will run until June.

College Open House Prospective and recently accepted students and their families will be welcomed by faculty, administrators and current students to Suffolk County Community College’s open house scheduled across all three of college’s campuses on Sunday, April 6th, from 1 to 3 p.m.

College faculty and administrators will welcome visitors and offer detailed information about Suffolk’s more than 70 degree and 30 certificate programs and will be joined by admissions staff to help students and parents navigate the admissions process and answer questions and financial aid representatives will provide details about the grants and loans process, as well as the many academic scholarships available at Suffolk.

Veterans should note that campus representatives will be available to provide educational and transitional services information.

The Open House program at each campus will be important for recently-accepted students

as well, and provide an opportunity to learn more about placement testing, academic advisement and financial aid.

“Suffolk County Community College has always been an exciting place to be,” said College President Dr. Shaun L. McKay, “and we are undergoing exciting changes, including the building or opening of new buildings on all three of our campuses.”

“Prospective Suffolk County Community College students and those accepted will discover that making a personal visit to a campus is critical to the college decision making process,” said Joanne E. Braxton, Suffolk’s Dean of Enrollment Management.

“We look forward to having students and their families joining us to learn about our academic programs and student support services,” Braxton said, adding “they will also have the opportunity to tour the campus with student guides who will answer questions based upon their experiences as active

students. Attending open house and applying early is the best way to secure admission to Suffolk County Community College,” Braxton concluded.

POLAR SPLASH - More than 300 people braved the cold weather and icy waters on Saturday, March 1st to join AHRC Suffolk in their 3rd Annual Polar Bear Splash. The splash, which took place at Bay Shore Marina, was a huge success with sponsors and splashers raising approximately $40,000. The Splash was fun for all ages, from high school students to local business leaders, including Sean Rose, President and CEO of Clare Rose, Inc. AHRC Suffolk even had one of their participants, Michael Johnson, splash for the first time! AHRC is thankful for all of those who supported and took part in this wonderful event and is looking forward to next year’s event.

On February 26th, School-Business Partnerships of Long Island, Inc. (SBPLI), along with Farmingdale State College, presented its annual Fred Breithut Scholarship Breakfast Fundraiser at the college’s Campus Center.

The admission suggested a donation of $30 that went towards the scholarship, which was awarded to Adam Lopez, Farmingdale State College Freshman, and a graduate of Longwood High School.

his gratitude for the scholarship and explained his passion for engineering and business, which led him to double major in Mechanical Engineering Technology and Business.

The scholarship, which was created in 2009, in honor of Fred Breithut, Founder of SBPLI, is awarded to an incoming Farmingdale State College student who has participated in SBPLI’s FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics programs and meets the eligibility requirements for the scholarship. The student receives $1,000 for each semester he/ she attends the college (maximum of eight semesters). Mr. Breithut sadly passed away in 2010, and it has become even more important for SBPLI to keep this scholarship intact due to his love and admiration for students.

The scholarship truly represents what Mr. Breithut supported: to further the education of the youth on Long Island.

“We are thrilled to award this scholarship to Adam Lopez,” says Ms. Madarash.

“He has dedicated a great deal of his time to SBPLI programs and has learned so much. We are confident that he will succeed throughout his four-years at Farmingdale State College. Each year, we hope to change a student’s life with the Fred Breithut Scholarship.”

Understanding The Circle Of Life

Last Sunday, as my family was gathering for spaghetti and meatballs, we received a phone call from my grandmother.

She sounded noticeably different.

We could tell that something was wrong because her voice was shaky, and she did not offer the usual pleasantries. After a few minutes of crying, she told us that her cat had passed away. She loved that cat for the twenty-something years that it was around, and during the last few days, she could sense that something was wrong.

I anticipated that she would be inconsolable,

because she truly cared about her precious feline.

We were devastated as well, until we got another call. It was my uncle. He had great news.

His wife was pregnant and they were expecting a baby. We never expected him to have kids, even though he seemed to love them. It was a welcomed shock to us, and even more needed for my grandmother.

She had lost a cat, but had also potentially gained a grandchild. It seemed as if this baby was coming to fill and exceed the gap left by the animal’s passing.

Essentially, the point that I am trying to make

is that when everything seems to be going wrong, greatness fills the void. With every bad, comes some good.

As was the case with my grandmother and her cat, new life is promising to replace the loss of a loved one. Even when it seems that everything is stacked against us, it is comforting to know that it will turn around. We can never dwell on the negative aspects of life, as around every corner is a surprise that has the potential to brighten our day.

Life is a cycle of highs and lows, and we should always anticipate the next peak.

For the first time in East Islip High School history, three of its athletes – Erik Adon, Jesse Dellavecchia and Dennis Ferro – were named All-State wrestlers in the same season. The trio successfully competed in the New York State wrestling championships, held at the Times Union

Center in Albany on February 28th and March 1st.

Adon finished the season with a record of 41-4, Dellavecchia at 44-6 and Ferro at 45-5. Ferro also broke the East Islip single season and career records for most pins. The Redmen attained second place

overall for the season, earning a total of 52.5 points. According to coach Michael Longobardi, this was the highest finish in East Islip High School history.

East Islip High School wore white on February 28th to recognize Rare Disease Day, an annual event held on the last day of February to raise awareness for rare diseases. Rare Disease Day aims to improve treatment access for patients and their families, and ensures that the public is better informed about rare diseases and their impact on peoples’ lives.

The event was led by East Islip freshman Kyle Engblom, who has a rare

Celebrating 25 Years Keep Islip Clean begins its 25th Anniversary celebration with the springtime litter cleanups, beautification projects, recycling initiatives, fairs, festivals and educational activities that are collectively known as the Great American Cleanup, which is the largest community enhancement event in the nation that takes place annually in April and May. Two Earth Day events in Brentwood and Islip were

the extent of involvement in the Great American Cleanup when KIC was founded in 1989 as an affiliate of the national Keep America Beautiful. Twenty five years later, those two inaugural Earth Day events continue and there are now hundreds of additional projects with several thousand participants.

KIC has activities for every interest, from large, organized events to individual litter cleanups.

Whether a

volunteer participates in a community-wide litter cleanup or forms their own group to plant a few flowers in a neighborhood spot, the Great American Cleanup makes a significant impact throughout Islip Township.

KIC provides litter cleanup supplies, guidance and support services to all volunteers. In addition to hands on projects, KIC uses educational materials to foster volunteerism in young people and teach them the importance of a

clean, green community.

LI Builders Expo This year’s Long Island Builder’s Institute Builders Expo will truly be a home show.

The show, the only expo on Long Island that attracts the pros, this year will feature some of Long Island’s biggest homebuilders who will exhibit their newest projects – both for sale and rentals.

The show takes place March 26th, from 3 to 8 p.m. at the Hilton Long Island, 598 Broadhollow Rd., Melville.

Sponsored by the Islandia-based Long Island Builders Institute’s (LIBI), the show is open to the public and the trade. Admission is free to the show and for five public seminars. This year marks the show’s 24th year.

A seminar on energy efficiency envelopes for building and real estate industry professionals offering CEU credits is limited to the trade and will run from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The cost of this seminar is $40, which includes lunch.

“This year’s expo is designed to introduce residents of Long Island to our local homebuilding and contracting community in a manner that will strengthen confidence

in working relationships and in knowing the best contractors on Long Island are the ones who are on the job,” said Lois, Fricke, director of operations at LIBI, the region’s homebuilders trade group.

Among the developers offering the public a first chance to see their new projects are Avalon Bay Communities, which has apartment communities under development is several Long Island communities; Engel Burman Group, which is planning a 55-plus community in Seaford and new assisted living facilities in Lake Grove and Farmingville; and Tritec Real Estate Co., which is constructing the New Village at Patchogue luxury apartments as well as projects in Port Jefferson and the Ronkonkoma Hub. Also among the hundred participating exhibitors are contractors for any kind of project, kitchen and bath suppliers, building material suppliers offering green products, flooring dealers, landscapers, security device suppliers, appliance dealers and interior designers.

A multitude of real estate and related service

professionals also will be on hand to offer advice. They include residential brokers, bankers, mortgage bankers and insurance brokers In addition to the exhibitors, the show will feature various free seminars for the public and the trade focusing on such topics as energy efficiency and new home technology. New home technology offerings to be discussed by officials of Rainbow Protection/Worldwide Security Group include “geofencing,” which allows parents to monitor children whom might wander from home, and smartphone apps that allow homeowners to remotely monitor their homes.

Other seminars will feature PSE&G-Long Island officials discussing energy efficiency; officials of National Grid talking about money-saving incentives; an architectural expert discussing the building permit process and an Everbank official talking about the do’s and don’t of the mortgage process.

This is an opportunity for students looking to pursue future careers in the arts to check out one of Long Island’s top rated Arts Schools., where 98 percent of graduates move on to higher education, conservatories or to work directly in their chosen field.

During the LIHSA open house you can sample some of the professionallevel classes that are taught by recognized artists and experienced master teachers. Sketch from a live model, sit in on a jazz jam or take a dance class. Join the theatre ‘techies’ in creating special effects, participate in an improv class, join in a film shoot on location, watch a student performance, take an art class and then be dazzled by the artwork on display in the student art gallery.
