Island and bringing home two medals. The firms – Fashion Cents, which offers monthly clothing subscriptions and premade clothing bundles, and Gifts to Go, which sells a variety of theme baskets –developed and presented a

business plan to a panel of judges.

The students look forward to preparing and competing in the national business plan competition and trade show in April in New York City.

Students Raise Funds For Senior Scholarships

National Foreign Language Honor Society students at East Islip High School held a Bingo Night on Feb. 6, collecting prizes from local businesses as well as donations from

the local community. The event raised approximately $2,000 to fund scholarships for this year’s graduating NFLHS seniors.

“Our sincerest appreciation to the East

Islip community and families who made this event possible,” said Italian language teacher Giuseppe Costa.

Athletes and Academics Join Forces

Brentwood Union Free School District’s athletes and academics have joined forces to guide their younger students lead positive lifestyles as they mature. Dozens of Brentwood High School’s student-athletes are involved in a program, Athletes Helping Athletes (AHA), that meet with younger students to discuss the significance of leading a drug-free lifestyle, the advantages of being involved in extracurricular activities, and the value of working towards a leadership position in the community.

“The district’s Athletes Helping Athletes (AHA) program is a phenomenal program that better acquaints

our upperclassmen with young students in the district,” said Mr. Richard Loeschner, superintendent of Brentwood Union Free School District. “We have an exceptional group of students involved in AHA who are devoted to providing proper guidance to others. It inspires us as faculty to experience first-hand the impact our high school students have on children in the lower grades.”

Throughout the school year, Brentwood’s AHA members make visits to several buildings in the district to speak with younger students as friends in a relaxed, and inclusive environment.

Visits cover a variety of topics including substance

abuse and self-esteem.

At the program’s most recent visit, AHA students discussed sportsmanship and bullying. Brentwood’s middle school students are encouraged to ask questions in a judgementfree zone and hear first-hand stories about how the AHA members have resolved complex situations they may have found themselves or friends in.

The Athletes Helping Athletes organization trains and prepares high school student athlete leaders to address complex social issues and provide alternative solutions to the peer pressure often times faced by younger members of the community.

Dedicated Drama Club The Drama Club at East Islip’s Ruth C. Kinney Elementary School recently presented the memorable musical “Annie,” directed by third-grade teacher Dennis Clancy. Cast and crew dedicated many hours learning songs,

memorizing lines and creating the set. With more than 50 students participating in the Drama Club, two performances were necessary to accommodate all of the proud participants.

In lieu of charging admission for attending,

donations were requested to support St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, earning a total of $450 for the charity.

“Our students did an outstanding job making this endeavor a great success,” Clancy said.

app. The students helped transform the classroom into a café theme, creating menus, name tags and posters, and then welcomed visiting family members for presentations.

“It was a fun and interactive way for

students to showcase their research and technology skills,” said Beck. “We had so much fun preparing for our big day, but even more fun sharing our reports with our special guests.

I am so proud of these amazing students.”

The National Education Association’s Read Across America is an annual reading motivation and

Kindergartners and first graders at Islip’s Wing Elementary School enjoyed creating Banana Dirt Pie during the most recent session of the school’s “Healthy Cooking with Ms. Arlene” program, an ongoing series of culinary lessons with chef Arlene Leggio.

“Cooking with Chef Arlene is a great way for students to create healthy meals, learn how to follow directions and to try new ingredients that they normally would not eat,” said Principal Michael Giacchetto. “Chef Arlene is always coming up with new creations like a quinoa

pie or a black bean dessert, and our students love the opportunity to cook and share these creations with their families. It is also great to have so many staff and community members come together to make these cooking projects successful.”
