Moriches Field Brewing Company received $18,750 to revitalize an empty downtown space.
(Cheers to that.)
Revitalization grants are just one of the ways we help businesses on Long Island and in the Rockaways. For Moriches Field Brewing Company, a grant from our economic development program was a perfect fit to help them renovate a previously vacant property. A discount through our Vacant Space Revival Program saved them more than $4,000 on their electric bills, and rebates for upgrading to LED lighting are keeping them saving month after month.
Helping revitalize our Island, one business at a time, is something we’re proud to be part of and something definitely worth celebrating.

Legislator Flotteron Recognizes Ancient Order Of Hibernians Division 7 Honorees
Legislator Steven J. Flotteron recognized the 2023 Ancient Order of Hibernians (AOH), Division 7 honorees, Thomas Joseph McHugh and Ladies (LAOH), Division 7 Aide Patricia Alice Fitzpatrick for the Annual John P. Reilly Memorial St. Patrick’s Day Dinner/Sashing of Grand Marshals at Irish Coffee Pub in Islip.
Mr. McHugh became a member of the AOH, Division 7, in 1993, joining the Division board with his cousin, past president and 2020 Grand Marshal, Tom Davis in 2006. He has held every officer position, serving through his presidency in 2021, leading a membership
expansion of the AOH despite a challenging pandemic and he is still active on the board as Immediate Past President. He joined the Roisin Dubh Pipe Band Color Guard in 2008, recently succeeding George Broschart as the Color Guard Captain while chairing the band’s largest annual fundraiser, the Skip McCormick Memorial Horseshoe Tournament, for 14 years. In addition, he became editor of the Division 7 newsletter in September 2011 and engineered a transition to the electronic format. He was also recognized as Hibernian of the Year in 2018.
Ms. Fitzpatrick’s family has also had a long history
with the Hibernians with her dad as the Founding President of the East Islip Our Lady of Knock Division 7, her uncles, Jimmy Walsh and Albert Carney were Charter members, and her mom became a Charter member of the Ladies Division, serving as President from 1969-1970. In 1972-1973, Patty served as the first Division 7 Junior Girls President and on the Hospitality Team and the office of Treasurer. She has also served as Recording Secretary, Vice President and is currently President. She played an essential part in creating the Irish Heritage Room at the East Islip Public Library.
What To Do
When Things Don’t Go Your Way
By JoAnn Cilla
As a real estate broker, I knew that the boom years of 2020 and 2021 wouldn’t last forever. For two years, houses for sale often had multiple offers before they were ever listed. Many homes went for above the asking price; sometimes well above the asking price.
But, as the saying goes, “All good things must come to an end.” Today, interest rates are more than double what they were a few years ago, home sellers aren’t leaving their 3% mortgage rates, and home buyers are waiting for more homes to hit the market and for interest rates to come down.
What do we do when business, and life, suddenly change directions? Some people put their heads in the sand and wait for everything to blow past them; others run to find a safe spot. What about the ones who stand
and face the obstacle in front of them? Often, they are the winners.
In business, when a good economy turns bad, companies will abandon their projects, lay off employees, and slash expenses. Smaller companies may go out of business because they didn’t prepare for the downturn, and they ran out of money.
Look at the stores in town; that will tell you who planned
for a weaker economy and who failed to plan.
Tough times bring stress, anxiety, and tough decisions; they also bring opportunities for the people and businesses that prepare for them. Prices for many items will come down because companies have fewer customers buying their products (think of everything from home appliances to cars). Competitors will go out of business, and their customers will look for new places to spend their money. The same is true for vendors and suppliers.
What is your plan when things don’t go your way?
Will you stand and fight while looking for opportunities, or will you wait for everything to blow over? I hope you decide to fight. We need stronger small businesses in our community, and we need our residents to support them along the way.

The Charity of the Month for March is Canine Companions®
www.canine.org
Canine Companions is a non-profit organization that enhances the lives of people by providing highly trained service dogs and ongoing support to ensure quality partnerships. They proudly o er their support services free of charge to recipients.
Clients come to Canine Companions because of their reputation, the quality of their dogs, the experience of their training sta and the desire to lead a life with greater independence. The organization is proud to have various chapters and training centers across our nation, with their Northeast Region (Long Island Chapter) located right here on Long Island, in Medford.
Did you know this non-profit runs a Veterans Initiative™? Through this initiative they place service dogs with veterans. Canine Companions’ expertly trained service dogs can perform physical tasks to enhance independence including opening doors, picking up prosthetics and alerting a veteran with hearing loss to important sounds in their environment.
With the increase in veterans facing post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), Canine Companions launched a program in 2018 to directly place service dogs with veterans with PTSD. Dogs are trained to identify each veteran’s unique stressors and perform tasks that directly disrupt escalation of symptoms, thus enhancing their quality of life. The dog supports their handler in crowded public situations by creating barriers and distance that might provoke anxiety for individuals with PTSD. Additional tasks such as nightmare interruption, turning on lights and retrieving items are taught to support veterans’ daily lives.
“When I see a veteran with a Canine Companions service dog, it still gives me goosebumps,” said Colonel E. David Woycik Jr., a highly decorated retired Army O cer and an active Canine Companions Board Member. “I see the satisfaction these veterans get...

the fulfillment of their lives through these dogs. The service dogs are not just partners, they are their right hand, their left hand, their legs and more. We can’t pay the veterans back enough, and I’m proud to be part of an organization serving them.” Mr. Woycik helped organize a Veterans Day event, Salute Independence , which awards local veterans who continue to serve their communities. Thanks to his tireless work, this annual event has raised more than $500,000 in total so far to support the organization’s Veterans Initiative™.
If you are a veteran that would like to learn more, please visit www.canine. org, click on Service Dogs and then Veterans.
Looking to make a di erence? You can become a Puppy Raiser with the Long Island Chapter today. Canine Companions volunteer puppy raisers provide specially-bred puppies a safe home, take them to obedience classes, serve up a healthy diet, provide socialization opportunities and give lots of love. Volunteers are warmly welcomed in other capacities as well, such as Front Desk Reception, General O ce Support, Puppy Transporter and Event Support, amongst other fields. Without loyal volunteers, this organization couldn’t fulfill their mission, so they are beyond grateful for each individual that gives their time and e orts to help.
To learn more about these opportunities, please visit www.canine. org or call 631.561.0200.

Lifelong Resident of Bay Shore
Legislator Steven J. Flotteron recognized Kay Erwood, Keep Islip Clean (KIC) Chairman Emeritus (one of the founding members) and Islip Commissioner, at their General Meeting in the Ballroom of Brookwood Hall in East Islip. Ms. Erwood has remained actively involved since KIC’s founding in 1989. She organized KIC’s inaugural Earth Day cleanup, which continues to this day as the upcoming 34th Annual Brook Street Wetlands Cleanup. One of her proudest achievements is the establishment of the Islip Middle School KIC Club. As students graduated Middle School, their interest continued and so the Islip High School KIC Club was established. Ms. Erwood mentored an Islip Middle School KIC Club student, who is now
the current Chairman of Keep Islip Clean. Another achievement was her work saving Islip Beach from development more than 20 years ago. She has also
been involved in the yearly beautification at the Beach, including the planting of 2,000 daffodil bulbs at the flag circle, pavilion and entry.

East Islip Varsity Wrestlers Top League And County, Regis Wins State Championship
It was a tremendous year for East Islip High School varsity wrestling team including the Suffolk County Division I Dual Meet Championship, followed by the League V and Suffolk County championship titles and a remarkable performance at the state championships highlighted by a first-place victory by Sebastian Regis.
CALL 516-795-WASH
East Islip won the League V championship title for the second consecutive time – and the 10th in its rich program history – on Feb. 4, crowning eight individual champions and boasting a record-setting 20 place winners who earned All-League. East Islip earned 365 total team points at the tournament, held at Rocky Point High School, setting another school record for most points scored in league tournament history.
East Islip’s eight league champs were junior Dylan Aristides (306) at 118 pounds, senior Matt Walsh (24-10) at 126 pounds, sophomore Logan Alfalla (32-5)
at 132 pounds, junior Anthony Avitabile (41-2) at 145 pounds, senior Stephan Coleman (415) at 160 pounds, senior James Sturek (39-4) at 189 pounds, senior DeAndre Perez (27-13) at 215 pounds and junior Sebastian Regis (43-1) at 285 pounds. League finalists included eighth grader Gryffin Alfalla (22-9) at 118 pounds, senior Justin Shayew (38-5), senior Chris Trahey (308) and junior Nick Groneman (25-7). Additionally, freshman Rocco DeStefano (36-7) placed fourth at 102 pounds, sophomore Anthony Leidtke-Merida placed fourth at 110 pounds, junior Justin Mazzuco placed fourth at 126 pounds, junior Sean O’Shea placed fourth at 138 pounds, senior Eric Rossi placed fourth at 152 pounds, senior Jason Vetrano placed third at 172 pounds, freshman Christian Horeis placed fourth at 189 pounds and senior Adrian Amaya placed third at 215 pounds.
All 20 place finishers at the league contest qualified for
the Suffolk County Wrestling Championships, held Feb. 13-14 at Stony Brook University, with the team winning the county title and six wrestlers making the podium: Logan Alfalla (fourth place), Shayew (fifth), Avitable (third), Coleman (third), Sturek (second) and Regis (first).
Avitabile, Coleman, Sturek and Regis all qualified for the NYSPHSAA State Championships, held Feb. 24-25 at MVP Arena in Albany. The 51-1 Regis earned his 100th victory on route to claiming the title as 2023 Division 1 New York State champion at 285 pounds, beating Middletown’s Stephan Monchery in the finals.
“This has been one of the best seasons in East Islip history,” coach Michael Longobardi said. “We finally checked off the last box. I couldn’t have done it with a better group of wrestlers, coaches and parents. I have been truly blessed to coach this group and I am beyond proud of all of them.”
